Abstract:We introduce and investigate superdensity and the density degree of sets with respect to a Radon measure on ${\mathbf R}^n$. Some applications are provided. In particular we prove a result on the approximability of a set by closed subsets of small density degree and a generalization of Schwarz's theorem on cross derivatives.

Abstract:Abstract We prove general topological Radon-type theorems for sets in $\mathbb R^{d}$ or on a surface. Combined with a recent result of Holmsen and Lee, we also obtain fractional Helly theorem, and consequently the existence of weak $\varepsilon $-nets as well as a $(p,q)$-theorem for those sets. More precisely, given a family ${\mathcal{F}}$ of subsets of ${\mathbb{R}}^{d}$, we will measure the homological complexity of ${\mathcal{F}}$ by the supremum of the first $\lceil d/2\rceil $ reduced Betti numbers of $\bigcap{\mathcal{G}}$ over all nonempty ${\mathcal{G}} \subseteq{\mathcal{F}}$. We show that if ${\mathcal{F}}$ has homological complexity at most $b$, the Radon number of ${\mathcal{F}}$ is bounded in terms of $b$ and $d$. In case that ${\mathcal{F}}$ lives on a surface and the number of connected components of $\bigcap \mathcal G$ is at most $b$ for any nonempty $\mathcal G\subseteq \mathcal F$, then the Radon number of ${\mathcal{F}}$ is bounded by a function depending only on $b$ and the surface itself. For surfaces, if we moreover assume the sets in ${\mathcal{F}}$ are open, we show that the fractional Helly number of $\mathcal F$ is linear in $b$. The improvement is based on a recent result of the author and Kalai. Specifically, for $b=1$ we get that the fractional Helly number is at most three, which is optimal. This case further leads to solving a conjecture of Holmsen, Kim, and Lee about an existence of a $(p,q)$-theorem for open subsets of a surface.

Abstract:For all $1\leq m\leq n-1$, we investigate the interaction of locally finite measures in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the family of $m$-dimensional Lipschitz graphs. For instance, we characterize Radon measures $\mu$, which are carried by Lipschitz graphs in the sense that there exist graphs $\Gamma_1,\Gamma_2,\dots$ such that $\mu(\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\bigcup_1^\infty\Gamma_i)=0$, using only countably many evaluations of the measure. This problem in geometric measure theory was classically studied within smaller classes of measures, e.g.~for the restrictions of $m$-dimensional Hausdorff measure $\mathcal{H}^m$ to $E\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ with $0<\mathcal{H}^m(E)<\infty$. However, an example of Csörnyei, Käenmäki, Rajala, and Suomala shows that classical methods are insufficient to detect when a general measure charges a Lipschitz graph. To develop a characterization of Lipschitz graph rectifiability for arbitrary Radon measures, we look at the behavior of coarse doubling ratios of the measure on dyadic cubes that intersect conical annuli. This extends a characterization of graph rectifiability for pointwise doubling measures by Naples by mimicking the approach used in the characterization of Radon measures carried by rectifiable curves by Badger and Schul.

Abstract:Motivated by problems in high-dimensional statistics such as mixture modeling for classification and clustering, we consider the behavior of radial densities as the dimension increases. We establish a form of concentration of measure, and even a convergence in distribution, under additional assumptions. This extends the well-known behavior of the normal distribution (its concentration around the sphere of radius square-root of the dimension) to other radial densities. We draw some possible consequences for statistical modeling in high-dimensions, including a possible universality property of Gaussian mixtures.

Abstract:We show, in a certain specific sense, that both the density and the cardinality of a Hausdorff space are related to the "degree" to which the space is nonregular. It was shown by Šapirovskiĭ that d(X)≤πχ(X)c(X) for a regular space X and the author observed this holds if the space is only quasiregular. We generalize this result to the class of all Hausdorff spaces by introducing the nonquasiregularity degree nq(X) , which is countable when X is quasiregular, and showing d(X)≤πχ(X)c(X)nq(X) for any Hausdorff space X . This demonstrates that the degree to which a space is nonquasiregular has a fundamental and direct connection to its density and, ultimately, its cardinality. Importantly, if X is Hausdorff then nq(X) is "small" in the sense that nq(X)≤min⁡{ψc(X),L(X),pct(X)} . This results in a unified proof of both Šapirovskiĭ's density bound for regular spaces and Sun's bound πχ(X)c(X)ψc(X) for the cardinality of a Hausdorff space X . A consequence is an improved bound for the cardinality of a Hausdorff space. An example is given of a compact, Hausdorff space X for which our new bound is a strict improvement over Sun's bound.

Density of Rational Points Near Flat/Rough Hypersurfaces

Abstract:For $n\geq 3$, let $\mathscr{M} \subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}$ be a compact hypersurface, parametrized by a homogeneous function of degree $d\in \mathbb{R}_{>1}$, with non-vanishing curvature away from the origin. Consider the number $\mathrm{N}_{\mathscr{M}}(\delta,Q)$ of rationals $\mathbf{a}/q$, with denominator $q\in [Q,2Q)$ and $\mathbf{a} \in \mathbb{Z}^{n-1}$, lying at a distance at most $\delta/q$ from $\mathscr{M}$. This manuscript provides essentially sharp estimates for $\mathrm{N}_{\mathscr{M}}(\delta,Q)$ throughout the range $\delta \in (Q^{\varepsilon-1},1/2)$ for $d>1+\tfrac{1}{2n-3}$. Our result is a first of its kind for hypersurfaces with vanishing Gaussian curvature ($d>2$) and those which are rough (meaning not even $C^2$ at the origin which happens when $d<2$). An interesting outcome of our investigation is the understanding of a `geometric' term $(\delta/Q)^{(n-1)/d}Q^n$ (stemming from a so-called Knapp cap), arising in addition to the usual probabilistic term $\delta Q^n$; the sum of these terms determines the size of $\mathrm{N}_{\mathscr{M}}(\delta,Q)$ for $\delta\in(Q^{\varepsilon-1},1/2)$. Consequences of our result concern the metric theory of Diophantine approximation on `rough' hypersurfaces -- going beyond the recent break-through of Beresnevich and L. Yang. Further, we establish smooth extensions of Serre's dimension growth conjecture.

Abstract:Radon measures belonging to the negative Sobolev space $H^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ are important from the point of view of fluid mechanics as they model vorticity of vortex-sheet solutions of incompressible Euler equations. In this note we discuss regularity conditions sufficient for nonnegative Radon measures supported on a line to be in $H^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$. Applying the obtained results, we derive consequences for measures on $\mathbb{R}^2$ with arbitrary support and prove elementarily, among other things, that measures belonging to $H^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ may be supported on a set of Hausdorff dimension $0$. We comment on possible numerical applications.

Abstract:We prove that measurable sets $E\subset \mathbb R^n$ with locally finite perimeter and zero $s$-mean curvature satisfy the surface density estimates: \begin{align*} \operatorname{Per} (E; B_R(x)) \geq CR^{n-1} \end{align*} for all $R>0$, $x\in \partial^\ast E$. The $C$ depends only on $n$ and $s$, and remains bounded as $s\to 1^-$. As an application, we prove that the fractional Sobolev inequality holds on the boundary of sets with zero $s$-mean curvature.

Abstract:Following Beck-Chen, we say a flow $\phi_t$ on a metric space $(X, d)$ is superdense if there is a $c > 0$ such that for every $x \in X$, and every $T>0$, the trajectory $\{\phi_t x\}_{0 \le t \le cT}$ is $1/T$-dense in $X$. We show that a linear flow on a translation surface is superdense if the associated Teichmüller geodesic is bounded. Conversely, if the linear flow is superdense, we show that along the Teichmüller geodesic, the diameter of the surface remains bounded. This generalizes work of Beck-Chen on lattice surfaces, and is reminiscent of work of Masur on unique ergodicity.

Abstract:We show that the Aldous--Hoover Theorem, giving representations for exchangeable arrays of Borel-valued random variables, extends to random variables where the common distribution of the random variables is Radon, or even merely compact, a weaker condition that does not even require that the values come from a Hausdorff space. This extends work of Alam \cite{alam2023generalizing} who showed a similar generalization of the di Finetti--Hewitt-Savage Theorem.

Abstract:In the setting of a general Borel measure $\mu$ on $R^d$ with the natural ball size condition $$\mu[B(x,r)]\leq Cr^s,$$ we establish the $L^p(\mu)$-$L^q(\mu)$-estimate for the generalized Radon transform $$(Af)(x):=\int_{\Phi(x,y)=0}(f\mu)(y)\psi(x,y)d\sigma_x(y),$$ where $\Phi$ is a smooth function away from the diagonal. Among other reasonable assumptions, an $L^2$-Sobolev bound on $A$ on $R^d$ is imposed. This bound is satisfied in many natural situations. The main result is, in general, sharp up to endpoints.

Abstract:Let $D$ be the ring of $S$-integers in a global field and $\hat{D}$ its profinite completion. We discuss the relation between density in $D$ and the Haar measure of $\hat{D}$: in particular, we ask when the density of a subset $X$ of $D$ is equal to the Haar measure of its closure in $\hat{D}$. In order to have a precise statement, we give a general definition of density which encompasses the most commonly used ones. Using it we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the equality between density and measure which subsumes a criterion due to Poonen and Stoll. In another direction, we extend the Davenport-Erdős theorem to every $D$ as above and offer a new interpretation of it as a "density=measure" result. Our point of view also provides a simple proof that in any $D$ the set of elements divisible by at most $k$ distinct primes has density 0 for any natural number $k$. Finally, we show that the closure of the set of prime elements of $D$ is the union of the group of units of $\hat{D}$ with a negligible part.

Superdensity Operators for Spacetime Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:We introduce superdensity operators as a tool for analyzing quantum information in spacetime. Superdensity operators encode spacetime correlation functions in an operator framework, and support a natural generalization of Hilbert space techniques and Dirac's transformation theory as traditionally applied to standard density operators. Superdensity operators can be measured experimentally, but accessing their full content requires novel procedures. We demonstrate these statements on several examples. The superdensity formalism suggests useful definitions of spacetime entropies and spacetime quantum channels. For example, we show that the von Neumann entropy of a superdensity operator is related to a quantum generalization of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, and compute this for a many-body system. We also suggest experimental protocols for measuring spacetime entropies.
Counting Rational Points In Non-Isotropic Neighborhoods of Manifolds

Abstract:In this manuscript, we initiate the study of the number of rational points with bounded denominators, contained in a non-isotropic $\delta_1\times\ldots\times \delta_R$ neighborhood of a compact submanifold $\mathcal{M}$ of codimension $R$ in $\mathbb{R}^{M}$. We establish an upper bound for this counting function which holds when $\mathcal{M}$ satisfies a strong curvature condition, first introduced by Schindler-Yamagishi in \cite{schindler2022density}. Further, even in the isotropic case when $\delta_1=\ldots=\delta_R=\delta$, we obtain an asymptotic formula which holds beyond the range of distance to $\mathcal{M}$ established in \cite{schindler2022density}. Our result is also a generalization of the work of J.J. Huang \cite{huangduke} for hypersurfaces. As an application, we establish for the first time an upper bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of weighted simultaneously well approximable points on a manifold $\mathcal{M}$ satisfying the strong curvature condition, which agrees with the lower bound obtained by Allen-Wang in \cite{allen2022note}. Moreover, for $R>1$, we obtain a new upper bound for the number of rational points \textit{on} $\mathcal{M}$, which goes beyond the bound in an analogue of Serre's dimension growth conjecture for submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^M$ .

Supercritical sharpness for Voronoi percolation

Abstract:We prove that the supercritical phase of Voronoi percolation on $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 3$, is well behaved in the sense that for every $p>p_c(d)$ local uniqueness of macroscopic clusters happens with high probability. As a consequence, truncated connection probabilities decay exponentially fast and percolation happens on sufficiently thick 2D slabs. This is the analogue of the celebrated result of Grimmett & Marstrand for Bernoulli percolation and serves as the starting point for renormalization techniques used to study several fine properties of the supercritical phase.

Abstract:We discuss the closability of directional derivative operators with respect to a general Radon measure $\mu$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$; our main theorem completely characterizes the vectorfields for which the corresponding operator is closable from the space of Lipschitz functions ${\mathrm{Lip}}(\mathbb{R^d})$ to $L^p(\mu)$, for $1\leq p\leq\infty$. We also consider certain classes of multilinear differential operators. We then discuss the closability of the same operators from $L^q(\mu)$ to $L^p(\mu)$; we give necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for closability, but we do not have an exact characterization. As a corollary we obtain that classical differential operators such as gradient, divergence and jacobian determinant are closable from $L^q(\mu)$ to $L^p(\mu)$ only if $\mu$ is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Lastly, we rephrase our results on multilinear operators in terms of metric currents.
