Abstract:We discuss the closability of directional derivative operators with respect to a general Radon measure $\mu$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$; our main theorem completely characterizes the vectorfields for which the corresponding operator is closable from the space of Lipschitz functions ${\mathrm{Lip}}(\mathbb{R^d})$ to $L^p(\mu)$, for $1\leq p\leq\infty$. We also consider certain classes of multilinear differential operators. We then discuss the closability of the same operators from $L^q(\mu)$ to $L^p(\mu)$; we give necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for closability, but we do not have an exact characterization. As a corollary we obtain that classical differential operators such as gradient, divergence and jacobian determinant are closable from $L^q(\mu)$ to $L^p(\mu)$ only if $\mu$ is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Lastly, we rephrase our results on multilinear operators in terms of metric currents.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly explores the closure properties of the directional derivative operator under the general Radon measure \(\mu\). Specifically, the authors study the closure of the directional derivative operator from the Lipschitz function space \(Lip(\mathbb{R}^d)\) to the \(L^p(\mu)\) space (where \(1\leq p\leq\infty\)). They present a main theorem that fully characterizes the vector fields for which the corresponding operator is closed from \(Lip(\mathbb{R}^d)\) to \(L^p(\mu)\). In addition, they also consider the closure of some multilinear differential operators and discuss the closure of these operators from \(L^q(\mu)\) to \(L^p(\mu)\), giving necessary and sufficient conditions, but not an exact characterization. In particular, an important result of the paper is that classical differential operators such as the gradient, divergence, and Jacobian determinant are closed from \(L^q(\mu)\) to \(L^p(\mu)\) only when the measure \(\mu\) is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Finally, the authors also reformulate the results of multilinear operators as properties on metric manifolds. ### Main problems The problems that the paper attempts to solve can be summarized as follows: 1. **Closure of the directional derivative operator**: Determine which vector fields \(v\) make the directional derivative operator \(T_v\) closed from \(Lip(\mathbb{R}^d)\) to \(L^p(\mu)\). 2. **Closure of multilinear differential operators**: Study the closure of certain multilinear differential operators. 3. **Closure of classical differential operators**: Determine the closure of classical differential operators (such as the gradient, divergence, and Jacobian determinant) under different measures. ### Main conclusions - **Main theorem**: For a given Radon measure \(\mu\) and vector field \(v\), if \(v(x)\in V(\mu, x)\) holds for \(\mu\)-almost everywhere, then the directional derivative operator \(T_v\) is closed from \(Lip(\mathbb{R}^d)\) to \(L^p_w(\mu)\). - **Necessary condition**: If the set \(\{x : v(x)\notin V(\mu, x)\}\) has positive \(\mu\)-measure, then \(T_v\) is not closed. - **Classical differential operators**: The gradient, divergence, and Jacobian determinant are closed from \(L^q(\mu)\) to \(L^p(\mu)\) only when the measure \(\mu\) is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. These results are of great significance for understanding the behavior of differential operators under different measures, especially in the study of geometric measure theory and partial differential equations.
