Abstract:Two left-invariant Lorentzian problems on the Heisenberg group are considered. The Pontryagin maximum principle was applied to both problems and a parameterization of abnormal and normal extremal trajectories was obtained. Reachability sets and the existence of optimal trajectories are investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a two-dimensional Lorentzian problem on the anti-de Sitter plane. Using methods of geometric control theory and differential geometry, it was possible to construct an orthonormal frame, calculate extremal trajectories, describe the reachable set, construct an optimal synthesis, and describe the Lorentzian distance.

Abstract:The Lie subgroup ${\rm GL}^{+}(2,\mathbb{C})$ of all matrices in the Lie group ${\rm GL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ with positive real determinant is equipped with a left-invariant sub-Lorentzian (anti)metric defined by the natural structure of the 4-dimensional Minkowski space-time on the subspace of Hermitian matrices in its Lie algebra. In base of the corresponding time-anti-optimal control problem, formulated in the paper, and Pontryagin minimum principle for it, using geodesics and shortest arcs of the corresponding left-invariant sub-Riemannian metric on the Lie subgroup ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$, the authors found sub-Lorentzian nonspacelike geodesics and longest arcs.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence theorem for longest paths in sub-Lorentzian problems, which generalizes the classical theorem for globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds. We specifically address the case of invariant structures on homogeneous spaces, as the conditions for the existence theorem in this case can be significantly simplified. In particular, it turns out that longest paths exist for any left-invariant sub-Lorentzian structures on Carnot groups.

Abstract:Let E be the Engel group and D be a rank 2 bracket generating left invariant distribution with a Lorentzian metric, which is a nondegenerate metric of index 1. In this paper, we first prove that timelike normal extremals are locally maximizing. Second, we obtain a parametrization of timelike, spacelike, lightlike normal extremal trajectories by Jacobi functions. Third, a discrete symmetry group and its fixed points which are Maxwell points of of timelike and spacelike normal extremals, are described. An estimate for the cut time (the time of loss of optimality) on extremal trajectories is derived on this basis.

For the first one, the reachable set has a nontrivial intersection with the Martinet plane, while a trivial intersection occurs for the second problem. Reachable sets, optimal trajectories, and sub-Lorentzian distances and spheres are described.

As a by side result, Bach-flat left-invariant Lorentzian metrics on semi-direct extensions of the Heisenberg group are classified, thus providing new background solutions in conformal gravity.

Abstract:We consider a left-invariant (sub-)Lorentzian structure on a Lie group. We assume that this structure is defined by a closed convex salient cone in the corresponding Lie algebra and a continuous antinorm associated with this cone. We derive the Hamiltonian system for (sub-)Lorentzian extremals and give conditions under that normal extremal trajectories keep their causal type. Tangent vectors of abnormal extremal trajectories are either light-like or tangent vectors of sub-Riemannian extremal trajectories for the sub-Riemannian distribution spanned by the cone.

Abstract:By fixing the usual metric on the Heisenberg Lie group $H_3$, we consider any left-invariant Lorentz force for which we write the corresponding magnetic equations. The aim of this work is twofold: the study of closed magnetic trajectories on Heisenberg nilmanifolds of dimension three and the inverse problem for this system, which consists in proving the existence of a Lagrangian. The last goal is achieved on $H_3$. By using symmetries coming from convenient actions, we compute the magnetic trajectories through the identity in $H_3$. We determine the closed magnetic trajectories on $H_3$ and consider the existence question on compact quotients $\Lambda\backslash H_3$ for any cocompact lattice $\Lambda\subset H_3$. We prove that the existence of closed magnetic geodesics is not guaranteed on every homotopy class. We give examples of compact quotients $\Gamma_k\backslash H_3$ with infinite many closed magnetic trajectories and compact quotients with no closed non-contractible magnetic trajectory for a given Lorentz force.

Abstract:We study the class of Lorentzian polynomials. The class contains homogeneous stable polynomials as well as volume polynomials of convex bodies and projective varieties. We prove that the Hessian of a nonzero Lorentzian polynomial has exactly one positive eigenvalue at any point on the positive orthant. This property can be seen as an analog of Hodge--Riemann relations for Lorentzian polynomials. Lorentzian polynomials are intimately connected to matroid theory and negative dependence properties. We show that matroids, and more generally M-convex sets, are characterized by the Lorentzian property, and develop a theory around Lorentzian polynomials. In particular, we provide a large class of linear operators that preserve the Lorentzian property and prove that Lorentzian measures enjoy several negative dependence properties. We also prove that the class of tropicalized Lorentzian polynomials coincides with the class of M-convex functions in the sense of discrete convex analysis. The tropical connection is used to produce Lorentzian polynomials from M-convex functions. We give two applications of the general theory. First, we prove that the homogenized multivariate Tutte polynomial of a matroid is Lorentzian whenever the parameter q satisfies $0 < q \le 1$. Consequences are proofs of the strongest Mason's conjecture from 1972 and negative dependence properties of the random cluster model model in statistical physics. Second, we prove that the multivariate characteristic polynomial of an M-matrix is Lorentzian. This refines a result of Holtz who proved that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of an M-matrix form an ultra log-concave sequence.

Abstract:This paper builds on our previous work in which we showed that, for all connected semisimple linear Lie groups G acting on a non-compactly causal symmetric space M=G/H , every irreducible unitary representation of G can be realized by boundary value maps of holomorphic extensions in distributional sections of a vector bundle over M . In the present paper we discuss this procedure for the connected Lorentz group G=SO1,d(R)e acting on de Sitter space M=dSd . We show in particular that the previously constructed nets of real subspaces satisfy the locality condition. Following ideas of Bros and Moschella from the 1990's, we show that the matrix-valued spherical function that corresponds to our extension process extends analytically to a large domain GCcut in the complexified group GC=SO1,d(C) , which for d=1 specializes to the complex cut plane C∖(−∞,0] . A number of special situations is discussed specifically: (a) The case d=1 , which closely corresponds to standard subspaces in Hilbert spaces, (b) the case of scalar-valued functions, which for d>2 is the case of spherical representations, for which we also describe the jump singularities of the holomorphic extensions on the cut in de Sitter space, (c) the case d=3 , where we obtain rather explicit formulas for the matrix-valued spherical functions.

Conformal actions of solvable Lie groups on closed Lorentzian manifolds

Abstract:We consider conformal actions of solvable Lie groups on closed Lorentzian manifolds. With anterior results in which we addressed similar questions for semi-simple Lie group actions, this work contributes to the understanding of the identity component $G$ of the conformal group of closed Lorentzian manifolds. In the first part of the article, we prove that $G$ is inessential if and only if its nilradical is inessential. In the second, we assume the nilradical essential and establish conformal flatness of the metric on an open subset, under certain algebraic hypothesis on the solvable radical. This is related to the Lorentzian Lichnerowicz conjecture. Finally, we consider the remaining situations where our methods do not apply to prove conformal flatness, and conclude that for an essential closed Lorentzian $n$-manifold, $n \geq 3$, the radical of its conformal group admits a local embedding into $O(2,n)$.

Abstract:Assume that is an open set, V is a separable Banach space over a field and , , are given functions. We are interested in the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the linear functional equation in Lorentz spaces. The investigation of the existence of the solutions in the case , that is in the Lorentz space , was motivated by Nikodem's paper On -invariant measures and a functional equation published in Czechoslovak Math. J., 41(116)(4):565–569, 1991. We have studied it in Some classes of linear operators involved in functional equations published in Ann. Funct. Anal., 10(3):381–394, 2019. Inspired by Matkowski's Dissertationes Math. paper Integrable solutions of functional equations from 1975, we studied the Orlicz case in our paper Linear functional equations and their solutions in generalized Orlicz spaces published in Aequationes Mathematicae in 2021 in volume 95, number 6. Here, we build on the ideas from that paper, using the connection between Lorentz and Orlicz spaces as detailed in the paper Fine behavior of functions whose gradients are in an Orlicz space authored by Malý, Swanson, and Ziemer and published in Studia Math. 190(1), 33–71 in 2009. However, we do not only look at real-valued functions, but allow separable Banach spaces as target spaces. As in the paper about Orlicz spaces, an important tool is a result by Hajłasz, Change of variables formula under minimal assumptions as published in Colloq. Math. 64(1), 93–101 (1993), concerning an optimal change of variable formula. It is used for proving that we can apply Banach's fixed point theorem.
Extremals on Lie groups with asymmetric polyhedral Finsler structures

Abstract:In this work we study extremals on Lie groups $G$ endowed with a left invariant polyhedral Finsler structure. We use the Pontryagin's Maximal Principle (PMP) to find curves on the cotangent bundle of the group, such that its projections on $G$ are extremals. Let $\mathfrak g$ and $\mathfrak g^\ast$ be the Lie algebra of $G$ and its dual space respectively. We represent this problem as a control system $\mathfrak a^\prime (t)= -\mathrm{ad}^\ast(u(t))(\mathfrak a(t))$ of Euler-Arnold type equation, where $u(t)$ is a measurable control in the unit sphere of $\mathfrak g$ and $\mathfrak a(t)$ is an absolutely continuous curve in $\mathfrak g^\ast$. A solution $(u(t), \mathfrak a(t))$ of this control system is a Pontryagin extremal and $\mathfrak a(t)$ is its vertical part. In this work we show that for a fixed vertical part of the Pontryagin extremal $\mathfrak a(t)$, the uniqueness of $u(t)$ such that $(u(t),\mathfrak a(t))$ is a Pontryagin extremal can be studied through an asymptotic curvature of $\mathfrak a(t)$.

On global solutions of heat equations with time-dependent nonlinearities on unimodular Lie groups

Abstract:In this work, we study the global well-posedeness of the heat equation with variable time-dependent nonlinearity of the form $\varphi(t)f(u)$ on unimodular Lie groups when the differential operator arises as the sum of squares of Hörmander vector fields. For general unimodular Lie groups, we derive the necessary conditions for the nonexistence of global positive solutions. This gives different conditions in the cases of compact, polynomial, and exponential volume growth groups. In the case of the Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^{n}$, we also derive sufficient conditions, which coincide with the necessary ones in the case of $\mathbb{H}^{1}$ (and this is also true for $\mathbb{R}^{n}$). In particular, in the case of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{1}$ we obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the aforesaid initial value problem with variable nonlinearity has a global positive solution.

The hidden Lorentz Covariance of Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:This paper introduces a systematic algorithm for deriving a new unitary representation of the Lorentz algebra ($so(1,3)$) and an irreducible unitary representation of the extended (anti) de-Sitter algebra ($so(2,4)$) on $\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mathcal{R}^{3},\frac{1}{r})$. This representation is equivalent to a representation on $\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mathcal{R}^{3})$, and the corresponding similarity transformation is identified. An explicit representation in terms of differential operators is given, and it is shown that the inner product is Lorentz invariant. Ensuring Lorentz covariance demands a modification of the Heisenberg algebra, recognized as a phase space algebra at the interface of gravitational and quantum realms (IGQR), which we consider subordinate to Lorentz covariance. It is also demonstrated that time evolution can be cast in a manifestly covariant form. Each mass sector of the Hilbert space carries a representation of the Lorentz algebra, and the (anti) de-Sitter algebra on each mass sector contracts to the Poincare algebra in the flat configuration and momentum space limits. Finally, we show that three-dimensional fuzzy space also carries a unitary representation of these algebras, algebraically equivalent to the $\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mathcal{R}^{3},\frac{1}{r})$ representation but not necessarily equivalent as representations. Several outstanding issues are identified for future exploration.

Covariant projective representations of Hilbert-Lie groups

Abstract:Hilbert--Lie groups are Lie groups whose Lie algebra is a real Hilbert space whose scalar product is invariant under the adjoint action. These infinite-dimensional Lie groups are the closest relatives to compact Lie groups. Here we study unitary representations of these groups from various perspectives. First, we address norm-continuous, also called bounded, representations: they are well-known for simple groups, but the general picture is more complicated. Our first main result is a characterization of the discrete decomposability of all bounded representations in terms of boundedness of the set of coroots. We also show that bounded representations of type II and III exist if the set of coroots is unbounded. Second, we use covariance with respect to a one-parameter group of automorphisms to implement some regularity. Here we develop some perturbation theory based on half Lie groups that reduces matters to the case where a ``maximal torus'' is fixed, so that compatible weight decompositions can be studied. Third, we extend the context to projective representations which are covariant for a one-parameter group of automorphisms. Here important families of representations arise from ``bounded extremal weights'', and for these the corresponding central extensions can be determined explicitly, together with all one-parameter groups for which a covariant extension exists.
