Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence theorem for longest paths in sub-Lorentzian problems, which generalizes the classical theorem for globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds. We specifically address the case of invariant structures on homogeneous spaces, as the conditions for the existence theorem in this case can be significantly simplified. In particular, it turns out that longest paths exist for any left-invariant sub-Lorentzian structures on Carnot groups.

Abstract:Two left-invariant Lorentzian problems on the Heisenberg group are considered. The Pontryagin maximum principle was applied to both problems and a parameterization of abnormal and normal extremal trajectories was obtained. Reachability sets and the existence of optimal trajectories are investigated.

Abstract:We present a general approach to prove existence of solutions for optimal control problems not based on typical convexity conditions which quite often are very hard, if not impossible, to check. By taking advantage of several relaxations of the problem, we isolate an assumption which guarantees the existence of solutions of the original optimal control problem. To show the validity of this crucial hypothesis through various means and in various contexts is the main body of this contribution. In each such situation, we end up with some existence result. In particular, we would like to stress a general result that takes advantage of the particular structure of both the cost functional and the state equation. One main motivation for our work here comes from a model for guidance and control of ocean vehicles. Some explicit existence results and comparison examples are given.

Abstract:An optimal control problem is investigated for an abstract semilinear differential equation of the first order in time in a Hilbert space with an unbounded operator and control involved linearly in the right-hand side. The cost functional is assumed to be additively separated with respect to state and control, with a rather general dependence on the state. For this problem, the existence of an optimal control is proved and the properties of the set of optimal controls are established. The author's previous results on the total preservation of unique global solvability (totally global solvability) and on solution estimation for such equations are developed in the context of the nonlinearity of the equation under study. The indicated estimate is found important for the present study. A nonlinear heat equation and a nonlinear wave equation are considered as examples.

Abstract:Optimal control problems with an L-0 term in the cost functional are considered. The L-0 term measures the size of the support of the control, and brings difficulty for studying the optimal control problems. By studying the existence and necessary conditions of optimal controls for a series of approximation problems and corresponding relaxed problems, the existence of optimal controls for a controlled elliptic system with an L-0-cost is obtained. Necessary conditions and the L-8-regularity of optimal controls are showed in the paper as well.

Abstract:Two problems of sub-Lorentzian geometry on the Martinet distribution are studied. For the first one, the reachable set has a nontrivial intersection with the Martinet plane, while a trivial intersection occurs for the second problem. Reachable sets, optimal trajectories, and sub-Lorentzian distances and spheres are described.

Abstract:Higher order necessary conditions for a minimizer of an optimal control problem are generally obtained for systems whose dynamics is at least continuously differentiable in the state variable. Here, by making use of the notion of set-valued Lie bracket introduced in "Set-valued differentials and a nonsmooth version of Chow-Rashevski's theorem" by F. Rampazzo and H.J.Sussmann and extended in "Iterated Lie brackets for nonsmooth vector fields" by E. Feleqi and F.Rampazzo , we obtain Goh and Legendre-Clebsh type conditions for a control affine system with Lipschitz continuous dynamics. In order to manage the simultaneous lack of smoothness of the adjoint equation and of the Lie bracket-like variations, we will exploit the notion of Quasi Differential Quotient, introduced in "A geometrically based criterion to avoid infimum-gaps in Optimal Control" by M. Palladino and F.Rampazzo. We finally exhibit an example where the established higher order condition is capable to rule out the optimality of a control verifying a first order Maximum Principle.

Abstract:In this paper, we study under which conditions the trajectories of a mechanical control system can track any curve on the configuration manifold. We focus on systems that can be represented as forced affine connection control systems and we generalize the sufficient conditions for tracking known in the literature. The sufficient conditions are expressed in terms of convex cones of vector fields defined through particular brackets of the control vector fields of the system. The tracking control laws obtained by our constructions depend on several parameters. By imposing suitable asymptotic conditions on such parameters, we construct algorithmically one-parameter tracking control laws. The theory is supported by examples of control systems associated with elliptic hovercrafts and ellipsoidal submarines.
Regularizing Numerical Extremals Along Singular Arcs: A Lie-Theoretic Approach

Abstract:Numerical ``direct'' approaches to time-optimal control often fail to find solutions that are singular in the sense of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, performing better when searching for saturated (bang-bang) solutions. In previous work by one of the authors, singular solutions were shown to exist for the time-optimal control problem for fully actuated mechanical systems under hard torque constraints. Explicit formulas, based on a Lie theoretic analysis of the problem, were given for singular segments of trajectories, but the global structure of solutions remains unknown. In this work, we review the aforementioned framework, and show how to effectively combine these formulas with the use of general-purpose optimal control software packages. By using the explicit formula given by the theory in the intervals where the numerical solution enters a singular arc, we not only obtain an algebraic expression for the control in that interval but we are also able to remove artifacts present in the numerical solution. In this way, the best features of numerical algorithms and theory complement each other and provide a better picture of the global optimal structure. We illustrate the technique on a two degree of freedom robotic arm example, using two distinct optimal control numerical software packages running on different programming languages.

Abstract:We consider a left-invariant (sub-)Lorentzian structure on a Lie group. We assume that this structure is defined by a closed convex salient cone in the corresponding Lie algebra and a continuous antinorm associated with this cone. We derive the Hamiltonian system for (sub-)Lorentzian extremals and give conditions under that normal extremal trajectories keep their causal type. Tangent vectors of abnormal extremal trajectories are either light-like or tangent vectors of sub-Riemannian extremal trajectories for the sub-Riemannian distribution spanned by the cone.

In this paper, we investigate the existence of optimal pairs for optimal control problems with their states constrained pointwise to Riemannian manifolds. For this purpose, by means of the Riemannian geometric tool, we introduce a crucial Cesari-type property, which is an extension of the classical Cesari property (see Definition 3.3, p. 51 in [L. D. Berkovitz, Optimal Control Theory, Appl. Math. Sci. 12, Springer-Verlag, New York, Heidelberg, 1974]) from the setting of Euclidean spaces to that of Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we show the efficiency of our result by a concrete example.

Abstract:We study the evolution of curves with fixed length and clamped boundary conditions moving by the negative $L^2$-gradient flow of the elastic energy. For any initial curve lying merely in the energy space we show existence and parabolic smoothing of the solution. Applying previous results on long time existence and proving a constrained Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality we furthermore show convergence to a critical point as time tends to infinity.

Abstract:This paper gives an existence result for solutions to an elliptic optimal control problem based on a general fractional kernel, where the admissible controls come from a class satisfying both a growth bound and a superlinear-subcritical condition. Each admissible control is known to produce a nontrivial corresponding state by applying the Mountain Pass Theorem to fractional equations. The main theoretical contribution is the construction of a suitable set of admissible controls on which the the standard existence theory for control problems with linear and semi-linear state constraints can be adapted. Extra care is taken to explain what new difficulties arise for these types of control problems, to justify the limitations of this theory. For completeness, the corresponding local elliptic control problem is also studied.

Abstract:The Lie subgroup ${\rm GL}^{+}(2,\mathbb{C})$ of all matrices in the Lie group ${\rm GL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ with positive real determinant is equipped with a left-invariant sub-Lorentzian (anti)metric defined by the natural structure of the 4-dimensional Minkowski space-time on the subspace of Hermitian matrices in its Lie algebra. In base of the corresponding time-anti-optimal control problem, formulated in the paper, and Pontryagin minimum principle for it, using geodesics and shortest arcs of the corresponding left-invariant sub-Riemannian metric on the Lie subgroup ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$, the authors found sub-Lorentzian nonspacelike geodesics and longest arcs.

Abstract:Let E be the Engel group and D be a rank 2 bracket generating left invariant distribution with a Lorentzian metric, which is a nondegenerate metric of index 1. In this paper, we first prove that timelike normal extremals are locally maximizing. Second, we obtain a parametrization of timelike, spacelike, lightlike normal extremal trajectories by Jacobi functions. Third, a discrete symmetry group and its fixed points which are Maxwell points of of timelike and spacelike normal extremals, are described. An estimate for the cut time (the time of loss of optimality) on extremal trajectories is derived on this basis.

A Novel State-Centric Necessary Condition for Time-Optimal Control of Controllable Linear Systems Based on Augmented Switching Laws (Extended Version)

Abstract:Most existing necessary conditions for optimal control based on adjoining methods require both state and costate information, yet the unobservability of costates for a given feasible trajectory impedes the determination of optimality in practice. This paper establishes a novel theoretical framework for time-optimal control of controllable linear systems with a single input, proposing the augmented switching law (ASL) that represents the input control and the feasibility in a compact form. Given a feasible trajectory, the perturbed trajectory under the constraints of ASL is guaranteed to be feasible, resulting in a novel state-centric necessary condition without dependence on costate information. A first-order necessary condition is proposed that the Jacobian matrix of the ASL is not full row rank, which also results in a potential approach to optimizing a given feasible trajectory with the preservation of arc structures. The proposed necessary condition is applied to high-order chain-of-integrator systems with full box constraints, contributing to some theoretical results challenging to reason by costate-based conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness theorem of entire solutions to the Lagrangian mean curvature equations with prescribed asymptotic behavior at infinity. The phase functions are assumed to be supercritical and converge to a constant in a certain rate at infinity. The basic idea is to establish uniform estimates for the approximating problems defined on bounded domains and the main ingredient is to construct appropriate subsolutions and supersolutions as barrier functions. We also prove a nonexistence result to show the convergence rate of the phase functions is optimal.

Abstract:We consider an infinite-horizon optimal control problem with an asymptotic terminal constraint. For the the weakly overtaking criterion and the overtaking criterion, necessary boundary conditions on co-state arcs are deduced, these conditions need no assumptions about the asymptotic behavior of the motion, co-state arc, cost functional, and its derivatives. In the absence of an asymptotic terminal constraint, these boundary conditions with the Pontryagin Maximum Principle allow raising the co-state arcs, corresponding to some asymptotic subdifferentials of the cost functional (fixing the optimal control) at infinity. If this set is a singleton, these conditions coincide with the co-state arc representation proposed by Aseev and Kryazhimskii. These results are illustrated by several examples.
