Abstract:We define a map from subspaces to Motzkin paths and show that the inverse image of every path is a disjoint union of symmetric Boolean subsets yielding an explicit symmetric Boolean decomposition of the subspace lattice.

Abstract:Turing Award winner Juris Hartmanis introduced in 1959 lattices of subspaces of generalized partitions ("partitions of type n"; "geometries" if $n = 2$). Hartmanis states it is "an unsolved problem whether there are any incomplete lattice homomorphisms in" lattices of subspaces of geometries. (He continues, "[I]f so how can these geometries be characterized.") We give a positive answer to this question.

Abstract:Given two real algebraic varieties X and Y, we denote by R(X,Y) the set of all regular maps from X to Y. The set R(X,Y) is regarded as a topological subspace of the space C(X,Y) of all continuous maps from X to Y endowed with the compact-open topology. We prove, in a much more general setting than previously considered, that each path component of C(X,Y) contains at most one path component of R(X,Y), and for every positive integer k the inclusion map R(X,Y)-->C(X,Y) induces an isomorphism between the kth homotopy groups of the corresponding path components. We also identify several cases where this inclusion map is a weak homotopy equivalence.

Abstract:The combinatorial Mandelbrot set is a continuum in the plane, whose boundary is defined as the quotient space of the unit circle by an explicit equivalence relation. This equivalence relation was described by Douady (1984) and, separately, by Thurston (1985) who used quadratic invariant geolaminations as a major tool. We showed earlier that the combinatorial Mandelbrot set can be interpreted as a quotient of the space of all limit quadratic invariant geolaminations with the Hausdorff distance topology. In this paper, we describe two similar quotients. In the first case, the identifications are the same but the space is smaller than that used for the Mandelbrot set. The resulting quotient space is obtained from the Mandelbrot set by ıpinching" the transitions between adjacent hyperbolic components. In the second case we identify renormalizable geolaminations that can be ırenormalized" to the same hyperbolic geolamination while no two non-renormalizable geolaminations are identified.

Cyclic nearly invariant subspaces for semigroups of isometries

Abstract:In this paper, the structure of the nearly invariant subspaces for discrete semigroups generated by several (even infinitely many) automorphisms of the unit disc is described. As part of this work, the near $S^*$-invariance property of the image space $C_\varphi({\rm ker\, } T)$ is explored for composition operators $C_\varphi$, induced by inner functions $\varphi$, and Toeplitz operators $T$. After that, the analysis of nearly invariant subspaces for strongly continuous multiplication semigroups of isometries is developed with a study of cyclic subspaces generated by a single Hardy class function. These are characterised in terms of model spaces in all cases when the outer factor is a product of an invertible function and a rational (not necessarily invertible) function. Techniques used include the theory of Toeplitz kernels and reproducing kernels.

Abstract:We prove that: 1. If a Hausdorff M-space is a continuous closed image of a submetrizable space, then it is metrizable. 2. A dense-in-itself open-closed image of a submetrizable space is submetrizable if and only if it is functionally Hausdorff and has a countable pseudocharacter. 3. Let $Y$ be a dense-in-itself space with the following property: $\forall y\in Y\ \exists Q(y) \subseteq Y\ [y \text{ is a non-isolated q-point in } Q(y)]$. If $Y$ is an open-closed image of a submetrizable space, then $Y$ is submetrizable. 4. There exist a submetrizable space $X$, a regular hereditarily paracompact non submetrizable first-countable space $Y$, and an open-closed map $f\colon X \to Y$.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of free decomposition spaces: they are simplicial spaces freely generated by inert maps. We show that left Kan extension along the inclusion takes general objects to Möbius decomposition spaces and general maps to CULF maps. We establish an equivalence of -categories . Although free decomposition spaces are rather simple objects, they abound in combinatorics: it seems that all comultiplications of deconcatenation type arise from free decomposition spaces. We give an extensive list of examples, including quasi-symmetric functions.

Abstract:The Littelmann path moel gives a realization of the crystals of integrable representations of symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras. Recent work of Gaussent-Littelmann and others has demonstrated a connection between this model and the geometry of the loop Grassmannian. The alcove walk model is a version of the path model which is intimately connected to the combinatorics of the affine Hecke algebra. In this paper we define a refined alcove walk model which encodes the points of the affine flag variety. We show that this combinatorial indexing naturally indexes the "cells" in generalized Mirkovic-Vilonen intersections.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve a classical counting problem for non-degenerate quadratic forms defined on a vector space in odd characteristic; given a subspace $\pi$, we determine the number of non-singular subspaces that are trivially intersecting with $\pi$ and span a non-singular subspace with $\pi$. Lower bounds for the quantity of such pairs where $\pi$ is non-singular were first studied in `Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Finite Fields Appl., 2022)', which was later improved for even-dimensional subspaces in `Glasby, Ihringer, Mattheus (Des. Codes Cryptogr., 2023)' and generalised in `Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Linear Algebra Appl., 2022)'. The explicit formulae, which allow us to give the exact proportion and improve the known lower bounds were derived in the symplectic and Hermitian case in `De Boeck and Van de Voorde (Linear Algebra Appl. 2024)'. This paper deals with the more complicated quadratic case.

Abstract:Suppose that $f_1,\ldots ,f_m : S(V)\to R$ are $m$ ($\geq 1$) continuous functions defined on the unit sphere in a Euclidean vector space $V$ of dimension $m+1$ satisfying $f_i(-v)=-f_i(v)$ for all $v\in S(V)$. The classical Borsuk-Ulam theorem asserts that the image of the map $(f_1,\ldots ,f_m) :S(V)\to R^m$ contains $0=(0,\ldots ,0)$. Pursuing ideas in papers of Bárány, Hubard and Jéronimo (2008) and Frick and Wellner (2023), we show that a certain separation property will guarantee that the image contains an $m$-cube.

Abstract:Using the Wold-von Neumann decomposition for the isometric covariant representations due to Muhly and Solel, we prove an explicit representation of the commutant of a doubly commuting pure isometric representation of the product system over $\mathbb{N}_0^{k}.$ As an application, we study a complete characterization of invariant subspaces for a doubly commuting pure isometric representation of the product system. This provides us a complete set of isomorphic invariants. Finally, we classify a large class of commuting isometric representations of the product system.

Zero-sum multisets mod p with an application to surface automorphisms

Abstract:We solve a problem in enumerative combinatorics which is equivalent to counting topological types of certain group actions on compact Riemann surfaces. Let $V_2(F_p)$ be the two-dimensional vector space over $F_p$, the field with $p$ elements, $p$ an odd prime. We count orbits of the general linear group $GL_2(F_p)$ on certain multisets consisting of $R \geq 3$ non-zero columns from $V_2(F_p)$. The $R$-multisets are `zero-sum,' that is, the sum (mod $p$) over the columns in the multiset is $[\begin{smallmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}]$. The orbit count yields the number of topological types of fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $2$ on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+ Rp(p-1)/2-p^2.$

Abstract:We give a new proof of a characterization of the closeness of the range of a continuous linear operator and of the closeness of the sum of two closed vector subspaces of a Banach space. Then we state sufficient conditions for the closeness of the sum of two closed subspaces of the Banach space of bounded functions and apply this result on various pseudo almost periodic spaces and pseudo almost automorphic spaces.

Abstract:Almost ss-mappings and almost compact mappings have been introduced and studied. In this article, we continue to research some questions related to the almost s-images (resp., almost compact images) of metric spaces. The following results are obtained. (1) A space XX is a quotient and almost compact image of a metric space if and only if XX is a sequential space having a cs∗c{s}^{\ast }-network which is point-regular at nonisolated points, which gives an affirmative answer to Question 4.9 in the article “S. Lin, X. W. Ling, and Y. Ge, Point-regular covers and sequence-covering compact mappings, Topology Appl. 271 (2020), 106987.” (2) There exists a bi-quotient and almost compact image of a metric space satisfying no base, which is point-countable at nonisolated points, which gives negative answers to Question 3.1 in the article “X. Abstract:In this paper we reduce the problem of counting the number of connected components in the intersection of two opposite open Schubert cells in the variety of real complete flags to a purely combinatorial question of counting the number of orbits of a certain intriguing group action in the space of upper triangular matrices with {0,1}-valued entries. The crucial step of our reduction uses the parametrization of the space of real unipotent totally positive upper triangular matrices introduced by Lusztig and Berenstein, Fomin, Zelevinski.

Abstract:Given two tuples of subspaces, can you tell whether the tuples are isomorphic? We develop theory and algorithms to address this fundamental question. We focus on isomorphisms in which the ambient vector space is acted on by either a unitary group or general linear group. If isomorphism also allows permutations of the subspaces, then the problem is at least as hard as graph isomorphism. Otherwise, we provide a variety of polynomial-time algorithms with Matlab implementations to test for isomorphism. String topology on the space of paths with endpoints in a submanifold

Abstract:In this article we consider algebraic structures on the homology of the space of paths in a manifold with endpoints in a submanifold. The Pontryagin-Chas-Sullivan product on the homology of this space had already been investigated by Hingston and Oancea for a particular example. We consider this product as a special case of a more general construction where we consider pullbacks of the path space of a manifold under arbitrary maps. The product on the homology of this space as well as the module structure over the Chas-Sullivan ring are shown to be invariant under homotopies of the respective maps. This in particular implies that the Pontryagin-Chas-Sullivan product as well as the module structure on the space of paths with endpoints in a submanifold are isomorphic for two homotopic embeddings of the submanifold. Moreover, for null-homotopic embeddings of the submanifold this yields nice formulas which we can be used to compute the product and the module structure explicitly. We show that in the case of a null-homotopic embedding the homology of the space of paths with endpoints in a submanifold is even an algebra over the Chas-Sullivan ring. This property does not hold in general as we show with a counterexample.

A combinatorial approach to categorical Möbius inversion and pseudoinversion

Abstract:We use Cramer's formula for the inverse of a matrix and a combinatorial expression for the determinant in terms of paths of an associated digraph (which can be traced back to Coates) to give a combinatorial interpretation of Möbius inversion whenever it exists. Every Möbius coefficient is a quotient of two sums, each indexed by certain collections of paths in the digraph. Our result contains, as particular cases, previous theorems by Hall (for posets) and Leinster (for skeletal categories whose idempotents are identities). A byproduct is a novel expression for the magnitude of a metric space as sum over self-avoiding paths with finitely many terms. By means of Berg's formula, our main constructions can be extended to Moore-Penrose pseudoinverses, yielding an analogous combinatorial interpretation of Möbius pseudoinversion and, consequently, of the magnitude of an arbitrary finite category.
