Abstract:We prove a generalization of the Kolmogorov-Barzdin theorem for maps from simplicial complexes into Euclidean space. Along the way we introduce the notion of sparse maps and discuss maps from simplicial complexes with controlled 1-waist.

On the expansiveness of coarse maps between Banach spaces and geometry preservation

Abstract:We introduce a new notion of embeddability between Banach spaces. By studying the classical Mazur map, we show that it is strictly weaker than the notion of coarse embeddability. We use the techniques from metric cotype introduced by M. Mendel and A. Naor to prove results about cotype preservation and complete our study of embeddability between $\ell_p$ spaces. We confront our notion with nonlinear invariants introduced by N. Kalton, which are defined in terms of concentration properties for Lipschitz maps defined on countably branching Hamming or interlaced graphs. Finally, we address the problem of the embeddability into $\ell_\infty$.

Abstract:Generalizing a recent result on lineability of sets of non-injective linear operators, we prove, for quite general linear spaces $A$ of maps from an arbitraty set to a sequence space, that, for every $0 \neq f \in A$, the subset of $A$ of non-injective maps contains an infinite dimensional subspace of $A$ containing $f$. We provide aplications of the main result to spaces of linear operators between quasi-Banach spaces, to spaces of linear operators belonging to an operator ideal, and, in the nonlinear setting, to linear spaces of homogeneous polynomials and to linear spaces of vector-valued Lispshitz functions on metric spaces.

Generalized maps between diffeological spaces

Abstract:By utilizing the idea of Colombeau's generalized function, we introduce a notion of asymptotic map between arbitrary diffeological spaces. The category consisting of diffeological spaces and asymptotic maps is enriched over the category of diffeological spaces, and inherits completeness and cocompleteness. In particular, the set of asymptotic functions on a Euclidean open set include Schwartz distributions and form a Colombeau type smooth differential algebra over Robinson's field of asymptotic numbers. To illustrate the usefulness of our machinery, we show that homotopy extension property can be established for smooth relative cell complexes if we exploit asymptotic maps instead of smooth ones.

Abstract:An endomorphism $f:\mathbb{P}^k\to\mathbb{P}^k$ of degree $d\geq2$ is said to be postcritically finite (or PCF) if its critical set $\mathrm{Crit}(f)$ is preperiodic, i.e. if there are integers $m>n\geq0$ such that $f^m(\mathrm{Crit}(f))\subseteq f^n(\mathrm{Crit}(f))$. When $k\geq2$, it was conjectured by Ingram, Ramadas and Silverman that, in the space $\mathrm{End}_d^k$ of all endomorphisms of degree $d$ of $\mathbb{P}^k$, such endomorphisms are not Zariski dense. We prove this conjecture. Further, in the space $\mathrm{Poly}_d^2$ of all regular polynomial endomorphisms of degree $d\geq2$ of the affine plane $\mathbb{A}^2$, we construct a dense and Zariski open subset where we have a uniform bound on the number of preperiodic points lying in the critical set. The proofs are a combination of the theory of heights in arithmetic dynamics and methods from real dynamics to produce open subsets with maximal bifurcation.

On simpliciality of function spaces not containing constants

Abstract:We investigate simpliciality of function spaces without constants. We prove, in particular, that several properties characterizing simpliciality in the classical case differ in this new setting. We also show that it may happen that a given point is not represented by any measure pseudosupported by the Choquet boundary, illustrating so limits of possible generalizations of the representation theorem. Moreover, we address the abstract Dirichlet problem in the new setting and establish some common points and nontrivial differences with the classical case.

Abstract:The notion of Laplacian of a graph can be generalized to simplicial complexes and hypergraphs, and contains information on the topology of these structures. Even for a graph, the consideration of associated simplicial complexes is interesting to understand its shape. Whereas the Laplacian of a graph has a simple probabilistic interpretation as the generator of a continuous time Markov chain on the graph, things are not so direct when considering simplicial complexes. We define here new Markov chains on simplicial complexes. For a given order~$k$, the state space is the set of $k$-cycles that are chains of $k$-simplexes with null boundary. This new framework is a natural generalization of the canonical Markov chains on graphs. We show that the generator of our Markov chain is the upper Laplacian defined in the context of algebraic topology for discrete structure. We establish several key properties of this new process: in particular, when the number of vertices is finite, the Markov chain is positive recurrent. This result is not trivial, since the cycles can loop over themselves an unbounded number of times. We study the diffusive limits when the simplicial complexes under scrutiny are a sequence of ever refining triangulations of the flat torus. Using the analogy between singular and Hodge homologies, we express this limit as valued in the set of currents. The proof of tightness and the identification of the limiting martingale problem make use of the flat norm and carefully controls of the error terms in the convergence of the generator. Uniqueness of the solution to the martingale problem is left open. An application to hole detection is carried.

Abstract:Given a finite simplicial complex $\mathcal{K}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and a real algebraic variety $Y,$ by a $\mathcal{K}$-regular map $|\mathcal{K}|\rightarrow Y$ we mean a continuous map whose restriction to every simplex in $\mathcal{K}$ is a regular map. A simplified version of our main result says that if $Y$ is a uniformly retract rational variety and if $k, l$ are integers satisfying $0\leq l\leq k,$ then every $\mathcal{C}^l$ map $|\mathcal{K}|\rightarrow Y$ can be approximated in the $\mathcal{C}^l$ topology by $\mathcal{K}$-regular maps of class $\mathcal{C}^k.$ By definition, $Y$ is uniformly retract rational if for every point $y\in Y$ there is a Zariski open neighborhood $V\subset Y$ of $y$ such that the identity map of $V$ is the composite of regular maps $V\rightarrow W\rightarrow V,$ where $W\subset\mathbb{R}^p$ is a Zariski open set for some $p$ depending on $y.$

On enumerative problems for maps and quasimaps: freckles and scars

Abstract:We address the question of counting maps between projective spaces such that images of cycles on the source intersect cycles on the target. In this paper we do it by embedding maps into quasimaps that form a projective space of their own. When a quasimap is not a map, it contains freckles (studied earlier) and/or scars, appearing when the complex dimension of the source is greater than one. We consider a lot of examples showing that freckle/scar calculus (using excess intersection theory) works. We also propose the "smooth conjecture" that may lead to computation of the number of maps by an integral over the space of quasimaps.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we define and study probabilistic values for cooperative games on simplicial complexes. Inspired by the work of Weber "Probabilistic values for games", we establish the new theory step by step, following the classical axiomatization, i.e. using the linearity axiom, the dummy axiom, etc. Furthermore, we define Shapley values on simplicial complexes generalizing the classical notion in literature. Remarkably, the traditional axiomatization of Shapley values can be extended to this general setting for a rather interesting class of complexes that generalize the notion of vertex-transitive graphs and vertex-homogeneous simplicial complexes. These combinatorial objects are very popular in the literature because of the study of Evasiveness Conjecture in Complexity Theory.

Abstract:We prove a global nonlinear Brascamp-Lieb inequality for a general class of maps, encompassing polynomial and rational maps, as a consequence of the multilinear Kakeya-type inequalities of Zhang and Zorin-Kranich. We incorporate a natural affine-invariant weight that compensates for local degeneracies, and yields a uniform constant that depends only on the 'degree' of the maps involved.

Abstract:Special generic maps are generalizations of Morse functions with exactly two singular points on spheres and canonical projections of unit spheres. They restrict the manifolds of the domains strongly in considerable cases and are important in algebraic topology and differential topology of manifolds of specific classes and manifolds regarded as elementary in some senses admit such maps in considerable cases. We propose a class of generalized special generic maps in our present paper and extend a fundamental result on structures and some algebraic topological properties of special generic maps by the author. Our present study will be a pioneering study on nice classes of generalized special generic maps. Studies of algebraic topological properties and differential topological ones of special generic maps have developed due to their nice structures for example.

Abstract:Given two real algebraic varieties X and Y, we denote by R(X,Y) the set of all regular maps from X to Y. The set R(X,Y) is regarded as a topological subspace of the space C(X,Y) of all continuous maps from X to Y endowed with the compact-open topology. We prove, in a much more general setting than previously considered, that each path component of C(X,Y) contains at most one path component of R(X,Y), and for every positive integer k the inclusion map R(X,Y)-->C(X,Y) induces an isomorphism between the kth homotopy groups of the corresponding path components. We also identify several cases where this inclusion map is a weak homotopy equivalence.

Abstract:The modulus of a polynomial-like (PL) map is an important invariant that controls distortion of the straightening map and, hence, geometry of the corresponding PL Julia set. Lower bounds on the modulus, called complex a priori bounds, are known in a great variety of contexts. For any rational function we complement this by an upper bound for moduli of PL maps in the satellite case that depends only on the relative period and the degree of the PL map. This rules out a priori bounds in the satellite case with unbounded relative periods. We also apply our tools to obtain lower bounds for hyperbolic lengths of geodesics in the infinitely renormalizable case, and to show that moduli of annuli must converge to 0 for a sequence of arbitrary renormalizations, under several conditions all of which are shown to be necessary.

Thick embeddings of graphs into symmetric spaces via coarse geometry

Abstract:We prove estimates for the optimal volume of thick embeddings of finite graphs into symmetric spaces, generalising results of Kolmogorov-Barzdin and Gromov-Guth for embeddings into Euclidean spaces. We distinguish two very different behaviours depending on the rank of the non-compact factor. For rank at least 2, we construct thick embeddings of $N$-vertex graphs with volume $CN\ln(1+N)$ and prove that this is optimal. For rank at most $1$ we prove lower bounds of the form $cN^a$ for some (explicit) $a>1$ which depends on the dimension of the Euclidean factor and the conformal dimension of the boundary of the non-compact factor. The main tool is a coarse geometric analogue of a thick embedding called a coarse wiring, with the key property that the minimal volume of a thick embedding is comparable to the ``minimal volume'' of a coarse wiring for symmetric spaces of dimension at least $3$. In the appendix it is proved that for each $k\geq 3$ every bounded degree graph admits a coarse wiring into $\mathbb{R}^k$ with volume at most $CN^{1+\frac{1}{k-1}}$. As a corollary, the same upper bound holds for real hyperbolic space of dimension $k+1$ and in both cases this result is optimal.

Abstract:The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $\psi$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.

Abstract:We focus on the Sobolev spaces of bounded subanalytic submanifolds of . We prove that if M is such a manifold then the space is dense in (the kernel of the trace operator) for all , where is the codimension in M of the singular locus of (which is always at least 2). In the case where M is normal, i.e. when is connected for every and small, we show that is dense in for all such p . This yields some duality results between and in the case where and is a bounded subanalytic open subset of . As a byproduct, we deduce uniqueness of the (weak) solution of the Dirichlet problem associated with the Laplace equation. We then prove a version of Sobolev's Embedding Theorem for subanalytic bounded manifolds, show Gagliardo–Nirenberg's inequality (for all ), and derive some versions of Poincaré–Friedrichs' inequality. We finish with a generalization of Morrey's Embedding Theorem.
