Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:Recently, Pipoli and Sinestrari [Pipoli, G. and Sinestrari, C., Mean curvature flow of pinched submanifolds of ℝℙ n , Comm. Anal. Geom. , 25 , 2017, 799–846] initiated the study of convergence problem for the mean curvature flow of small codimension in the complex projective space ℝℙ m . The purpose of this paper is to develop the work due to Pipoli and Sinestrari, and verify a new convergence theorem for the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in the complex projective space. Namely, the authors prove that if the initial submanifold in ℝℙ m satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then the mean curvature flow converges to a round point in finite time, or converges to a totally geodesic submanifold as t → ∞. Consequently, they obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in the complex projective space.

Abstract:Under the hypothesis of mean curvature flows of hypersurfaces, we prove that the limit of the smooth rescaling of the singularity is weakly convex. It is a generalization of the result due to G. Huisken and C. Sinestrari in [5]. These a-priori bounds are satisfied for mean convex hypersurfaces in locally symmetric Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature.

Abstract:We consider the graphical mean curvature flow of maps ${\bf f}:\mathbb{R}^m\to\mathbb{R}^n$, $m\ge 2$, and derive estimates on the growth rates of the evolved graphs, based on a new version of the maximum principle for properly immersed submanifolds that extends the well-known maximum principle of Ecker and Huisken derived in their seminal paper [10]. In the case of uniformly area decreasing maps ${\bf f}:\mathbb{R}^m\to\mathbb{R}^2$, $m\ge 2$, we use this maximum principle to show that the graphicality and the area decreasing property are preserved. Moreover, if the initial graph is asymptotically conical at infinity, we prove that the normalized mean curvature flow smoothly converges to a self-expander.

Abstract:We prove that smooth convex $\alpha$-noncollapsed ancient mean curvature flow satisfies a quantitative curvature estimate $H(y,t)\leq CH(x,t)(H(x,t)|x-y|+1)^2$ for any pair of $x,y$. In other words, the rescaled curvature grows at most quadratically in terms of the rescaled extrinsic distance.

Mean Curvature Flow of High Codimension in Complex Projective Space

Abstract:We study the mean curvature flow of smooth $m$-dimensional compact submanifolds with quadratic pinching in the Riemannian manifold $\mathbb{C}P^n$. Our main focus is on the case of high codimension, $k\geq 2$. We establish a codimension estimate that shows in regions of high curvature, the submanifold becomes approximately codimension one in a quantifiable way. This estimate enables us to prove at a singular time of the flow, there exists a rescaling that converges to a smooth codimension-one limiting flow in Euclidean space. Under a cylindrical type pinching, we show that this limiting flow is weakly convex and moves by translation. These estimates allow us to analyse the behaviour of the flow near singularities and establish the existence of the limiting flow. Lastly, we prove a decay estimate that shows that the rescaling converges smoothly to a totally geodesic limit in infinite time. This behaviour is only possible if the dimension of the submanifold is even. Our approach relies on the preservation of the quadratic pinching condition along the flow and a gradient estimate that controls the mean curvature in regions of high curvature. This result generalises the work of Pipoli and Sinestrari on the mean curvature flow of submanifolds of the complex projective space.

Abstract:Motivated by a conjecture of De Giorgi, we consider the Almgren-Taylor-Wang scheme for mean curvature flow, where the volume penalization is replaced by a term of the form \[ \int_{E\Delta F} f\Big(\frac{ {\rm d}_F }{\tau}\Big)~dx \] for $f$ ranging in a large class of strictly increasing continuous functions. In particular, our analysis covers the case \[ f(r) = r^\alpha, \qquad r \geq 0, \quad \alpha>0, \] considered by De Giorgi. We show that the generalized minimizing movement scheme converges to the geometric evolution equation \[ f(v) = - \kappa\quad \text{on $\partial E(t)$,} \] where $\{E(t)\}$ are evolving subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n,$ $v$ is the normal velocity of $\partial E(t),$ and $\kappa$ is the mean curvature of $\partial E(t)$. We extend our analysis to the anisotropic setting, and in the presence of a driving force. We also show that minimizing movements coincide with the smooth classical solution as long as the latter exists. Finally, we prove that in the absence of forcing, mean convexity and convexity are preserved by the weak flow.

Sharp Quartic Pinching for the Mean Curvature Flow in the Sphere

Abstract:We prove a sharp quartic curvature pinching for the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{S}^{n+m}$, $m\ge2$, which generalises Pu's work on the convergence of submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n+m}$ to a round point. Using a blow up argument, we prove a codimension and a cylindrical estimate, where in regions of high curvature, the submanifold becomes approximately codimension one, quantitatively, and is weakly convex and moves by translation or is a self shrinker. With a decay estimate, the rescaling converges smoothly to a totally geodesic limit in infinite time, without using Stampacchia iteration or integral analysis.

Abstract:A variant of the Gauss curvature flow for closed and convex hypersurfaces is considered. We reveal that if the initial hypersurface is pinched enough, then this property is preserved. Furthermore, based on some structure assumptions on the speed function of the shrinking flow, we show that the flow converges to a sphere. This may generalize the result of B. Chow\cite{CW85} to the possible non-homogeneous curvature flows.

Abstract:In general, gradient estimates are very important and necessary for deriving convergence results in different geometric flows, and most of them are obtained by analytic methods. In this paper, we will apply a stochastic approach to systematically give gradient estimates for some important geometric quantities under the Ricci flow, the mean curvature flow, the forced mean curvature flow and the Yamabe flow respectively. Our conclusion gives another example that probabilistic tools can be used to simplify proofs for some problems in geometric analysis.

Abstract:We show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ avoids asymptotically conical and non-spherical compact singularities. We also show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed low-entropy hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ is smooth until it disappears in a round point. The main technical ingredient is a long-time existence and uniqueness result for ancient mean curvature flows that lie on one side of asymptotically conical or compact shrinking solitons.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the mean curvature flow, which describes the dynamics of a hypersurface whose normal velocity is determined by local mean curvature. We present a Cartesian grid-based method for solving mean curvature flows in two and three space dimensions. The present method embeds a closed hypersurface into a fixed Cartesian grid and decomposes it into multiple overlapping subsets. For each subset, extra tangential velocities are introduced such that marker points on the hypersurface only moves along grid lines. By utilizing an alternating direction implicit (ADI)-type time integration method, the subsets are evolved alternately by solving scalar parabolic partial differential equations on planar domains. The method removes the stiffness using a semi-implicit scheme and has no high-order stability constraint on time step size. Numerical examples in two and three space dimensions are presented to validate the proposed method.

Abstract:Inspired by a result in T. H. Colding. (16). Acta. Math.209(2) (2012), 229-263 [16] of Colding, the present paper studies the Green function on a non-parabolic space for some finite . Defining for a point , which plays a role of a smoothed distance function from , we prove that the gradient has the canonical pointwise representative with the sharp upper bound in terms of the -volume density of at ; Moreover the rigidity is obtained, namely, the upper bound is attained at a point if and only if the space is isomorphic to the -metric measure cone over an space. In the case when is an -regular point, the rigidity states an isomorphism to the -dimensional Euclidean space , thus, this extends the result of Colding to spaces. It is emphasized that the almost rigidities are also proved, which are new even in the smooth framework.

Abstract:In the last 15 years, White and Huisken-Sinestrari developed a far-reaching structure theory for the mean curvature flow of mean convex hypersurfaces. Their papers provide a package of estimates and structural results that yield a precise description of singularities and of high curvature regions in a mean convex flow. In the present paper, we give a new treatment of the theory of mean convex (and k-convex) flows. This includes: (1) an estimate for derivatives of curvatures, (2) a convexity estimate, (3) a cylindrical estimate, (4) a global convergence theorem, (5) a structure theorem for ancient solutions, and (6) a partial regularity theorem. Our new proofs are both more elementary and substantially shorter than the original arguments. Our estimates are local and universal. A key ingredient in our new approach is the new non- collapsing result of Andrews. Some parts are also inspired by the work of Perelman. In a forthcoming paper, we will give a new construction of mean curvature flow with surgery based on the theorems established in the present paper.
