Abstract:We consider ergodic Jacobi operators and obtain estimates on the Lebesgue measure and the distance between maximum and minimum points of the spectrum in terms of the Lyapunov exponent. Our proofs are based on results from logarithmic potential theory and their connections with spectral theory of Jacobi operators.

Abstract:We present a spectral-theoretic approach to time-average statistical mechanics for general, non-equilibrium initial conditions. We consider the statistics of bounded, local additive functionals of reversible as well as irreversible ergodic stochastic dynamics with continuous or discrete state-space. We derive exact results for the mean, fluctuations and correlations of time average observables from the eigenspectrum of the underlying generator of Fokker-Planck or master equation dynamics, and discuss the results from a physical perspective. Feynman-Kac formulas are re-derived using Itô calculus and combined with non-Hermitian perturbation theory. The emergence of the universal central limit law in a spectral representation is shown explicitly on large deviation time-scales. For reversible dynamics with equilibrated initial conditions we derive a general upper bound to fluctuations of occupation measures in terms of an integral of the return probability. Simple, exactly solvable examples are analyzed to demonstrate how to apply the theory. As a biophysical example we revisit the Berg-Purcell problem on the precision of concentration measurements by a single receptor. Our results are directly applicable to a diverse range of phenomena underpinned by time-average observables and additive functionals in physical, chemical, biological, and economical systems.

Abstract:We consider the quasi-periodic Jacobi operator $H_{x,\omega}$ in $l^2(\mathbb{Z})$ $(H_{x,\omega}\phi)(n) = -b(x+(n+1)\omega)\phi(n+1) - b(x+n\omega)\phi(n-1) + a(x+n\omega)\phi(n) = E\phi(n),\ n\in\mathbb{Z},$ where $a(x),\ b(x)$ are analytic function on $\mathbb{T}$, $b$ is not identically zero, and $\omega$ obeys some strong Diophantine condition. We consider the corresponding unimodular cocycle. We prove that if the Lyapunov exponent $L(E)$ of the cocycle is positive for some $E=E_0$, then there exists $\rho_0=\rho_0(a,b,\omega,E_0)$, $\beta=\beta(a,b,\omega)$ such that $|L(E)-L(E')|<|E-E'|^\beta$ for any $E,E'\in (E_0-\rho_0,E_0+\rho_0)$. If $L(E)>0$ for all $E$ in some compact interval $I$ then $L(E)$ is Hölder continuous on $I$ with a Hölder exponent $\beta=\beta(a,b,\omega,I)$. In our derivation we follow the refined version of the Goldstein-Schlag method \cite{GS} developed by Bourgain and Jitomirskaya \cite{BJ}.

Abstract:The research on spectral inequalities for discrete Schrödinger operators has proved fruitful in the last decade. Indeed, several authors analysed the operator’s canonical relation to a tridiagonal Jacobi matrix operator. In this paper, we consider a generalisation of this relation with regard to connecting higher order Schrödinger-type operators with symmetric matrix operators with arbitrarily many nonzero diagonals above and below the main diagonal. We thus obtain spectral bounds for such matrices, similar in nature to the Lieb-Thirring inequalities.

Abstract:We study discrete quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators on ℓ2(Z)$${\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})}$$ with potentials defined by γ-Hölder functions. We prove a general statement that for γ > 1/2 and under the condition of positive Lyapunov exponents, measure of the spectrum at irrational frequencies is the limit of measures of spectra of periodic approximants. An important ingredient in our analysis is a general result on uniformity of convergence from above in the subadditive ergodic theorem for strictly ergodic cocycles.

Abstract:In general, point spectrum of an almost periodic Jacobi matrix can depend on the element of the hull. In this paper, we study the hull of the limit-periodic Jacobi matrix corresponding to the equilibrium measure of the Julia set of the polynomial $z^2-\lambda$ with large enough $\lambda$; this is the leading model in inverse spectral theory of ergodic operators with zero measure spectrum. We prove that every element of the hull has empty point spectrum.

Abstract:The purpose of this note is to investigate the concentration properties of spectral projectors on manifolds. This question has been intensively studied (by Logvinenko--Sereda, Nazarov, Jerison--Lebeau, Kovrizhkin, Egidi--Seelmann--Veseli{ć}, Burq--Moyano, among others) in connection with the uncertainty principle. We provide the first high-frequency results in a geometric setting which is neither Euclidean nor a perturbation of Euclidean. Namely, we prove the natural (and optimal) uncertainty principle for the spectral projector on the hyperbolic half-plane.

Abstract:We consider Laplacians on periodic metric graphs with unit-length edges. The spectrum of these operators consists of an absolutely continuous part (which is a union of an infinite number of non-degenerated spectral bands) plus an infinite number of flat bands, i.e., eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. Our main result is a localization of spectral bands in terms of eigenvalues of Dirichlet and Neumann operators on a fundamental domain of the periodic graph. The proof is based on the spectral band localization for discrete Laplacians and on the relation between the spectra of discrete and metric Laplacians.

Abstract:The absolutely continuous spectrum of an ergodic family of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators is completely determined by the Lyapunov exponent as shown by Ishii, Kotani and Pastur. Moreover, the part of the theory developed by Kotani gives powerful tools for proving the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum, the presence of absolutely continuous spectrum, and even the presence of purely absolutely continuous spectrum. We review these results and their recent applications to a number of problems: the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum for rough potentials, the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum for potentials defined by the doubling map on the circle, and the absence of singular spectrum for the subcritical almost Mathieu operator.

Spectral estimates of dynamically-defined and amenable operator families

Abstract:We consider kernel operators defined by a dynamical system. The Hausdorff distance of spectra is estimated by the Hausdorff distance of subsystems. We prove that the spectrum map is $ \frac{1}{2} $-Hölder continuous provided the group action and kernel are Lipschitz continuous and the group has strict polynomial growth. Also, we prove that the continuity can be improved resulting in the spectrum map being Lipschitz continuous provided the kernel is instead locally-constant. This complements a 1990 result by J.~Avron; P.H.M.v.~Mouche; B.~Simon establishing that one-dimensional discrete quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators with Lipschitz continuous potentials, e.g., the Almost Mathieu Operator, exhibit spectral $ \frac{1}{2} $-Hölder continuity. Also, this complements a 2019 result by S.~Beckus; J.~Bellissard; H.~Cornean establishing that $ d $-dimensional discrete subshift Schrödinger operators with locally-constant potentials, e.g., the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, exhibit spectral Lipschitz continuity. Our work exposes the connection between the past two results, and the group, e.g., the Heisenberg group, needs not be the integer lattice nor abelian.

Spectral Asymptotics of Elliptic Operators on Manifolds

Abstract:The study of spectral properties of natural geometric elliptic partial differential operators acting on smooth sections of vector bundles over Riemannian manifolds is a central theme in global analysis, differential geometry and mathematical physics. Instead of studying the spectrum of a differential operator $L$ directly one usually studies its spectral functions, that is, spectral traces of some functions of the operator, such as the spectral zeta function $\zeta(s)=\Tr L^{-s}$ and the heat trace $\Theta(t)=\Tr\exp(-tL)$. The kernel $U(t;x,x')$ of the heat semigroup $\exp(-tL)$, called the heat kernel, plays a major role in quantum field theory and quantum gravity, index theorems, non-commutative geometry, integrable systems and financial mathematics. We review some recent progress in the study of spectral asymptotics. We study more general spectral functions, such as $\Tr f(tL)$, that we call quantum heat traces. Also, we define new invariants of differential operators that depend not only on the their eigenvalues but also on the eigenfunctions, and, therefore, contain much more information about the geometry of the manifold. Furthermore, we study some new invariants, such as $\Tr\exp(-tL_+)\exp(-sL_-)$, that contain relative spectral information of two differential operators. Finally we show how the convolution of the semigroups of two different operators can be computed by using purely algebraic methods.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we study ergodic optimization and multifractal behavior of Lyapunov exponents for matrix cocycles. We show that the restricted variational principle holds for generic cocycles [in the sense of (Bonatti and Viana in Ergod Theory Dyn Syst 24(5):1295–1330, 2004)] over mixing subshifts of finite type. We also show that the Lyapunov spectrum is equal to the closure of the set where the entropy spectrum is positive for such cocycles. Abstract:The paper deals with the distribution of eigenvalues of the compact fractal pseudodifferential operator $T^\mu_\tau$, \[ \big( T^\mu_\tau f\big)(x) = \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} e^{-ix\xi} \, \tau(x,\xi) \, \big( f\mu \big)^\vee (\xi) \, \mathrm{d} \xi, \qquad x\in \mathbb{R}^n, \] in suitable special Besov spaces $B^s_p (\mathbb{R}^n) = B^s_{p,p} (\mathbb{R}^n)$, $s>0$, $1<p<\infty$. Here $\tau(x,\xi)$ are the symbols of (smooth) pseudodifferential operators belonging to appropriate Hörmander classes $\Psi^\sigma_{1, \varrho} (\mathbb{R}^n)$, $\sigma <0$, $0 \le \varrho \le 1$ (including the exotic case $\varrho =1$) whereas $\mu$ is the Hausdorff measure of a compact $d$-set $\Gamma$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $0<d<n$. This extends previous assertions for the positive-definite selfadjoint fractal differential operator $(\mathrm{id} - \Delta)^{\sigma/2} \mu$ based on Hilbert space arguments in the context of suitable Sobolev spaces $H^s (\mathbb{R}^n) = B^s_2 (\mathbb{R}^n)$. We collect the outcome in the {Main Theorem} below. Proofs are based on estimates for the entropy numbers of the compact trace operator \[ \mathrm{tr}_\mu: \quad B^s_p (\mathbb{R}^n) \hookrightarrow L_p (\Gamma, \mu), \quad s>0, \quad 1<p<\infty. \] We add at the end of the paper a few personal reminiscences illuminating the role of Pietsch in connection with the creation of approximation numbers and entropy numbers.

Abstract:We extend the spectral method for proving limit theorems to random non-uniformly expanding dynamical systems. This yields the CLT and moderate deviations principles (MDP). We show that as the amount of non-uniformity decreases the CLT rates and the speed in the MDP become closer to the optimal ones. For smooth systems the rates are effective. Compared to recent progress on the subject [34] we are able to consider much more general maps, Gibbs measures and observables. However, our main results are new even in the setup of [34].

Abstract:Let $(X,g)$ be a closed, connected surface, with variable negative curvature. We consider the distribution of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on random covers $X_n\to X$ of degree $n$. We focus on the ensemble variance of the smoothed number of eigenvalues of the square root of the positive Laplacian $\sqrt{\Delta}$ in windows $[\lambda-\frac 1L,\lambda+\frac 1L]$, over the set of $n$-sheeted covers of $X$. We first take the limit of large degree $n\to +\infty$, then we let the energy $\lambda$ go to $+\infty$ while the window size $\frac 1L$ goes to $0$. In this ad hoc limit, local energy averages of the variance converge to an expression corresponding to the variance of the same statistic when considering instead spectra of large random matrices of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE). By twisting the Laplacian with unitary representations, we are able to observe different statistics, corresponding to the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) when time reversal symmetry is broken. These results were shown by F. Naud for the model of random covers of a hyperbolic surface. For an individual cover $X_n\to X$, we consider spectral fluctuations of the counting function on $X_n$ around the ensemble average. In the large energy regime, for a typical cover $X_n\to X$ of large degree, these fluctuations are shown to approach the GOE result, a phenomenon called ergodicity in Random Matrix Theory. An analogous result for random covers of hyperbolic surfaces was obtained by Y. Maoz.

On spectral measures and convergence rates in von Neumann's Ergodic Theorem

Abstract:We show that the power-law decay exponents in von Neumann's Ergodic Theorem (for discrete systems) are the pointwise scaling exponents of a spectral measure at the spectral value~$1$. In this work we also prove that, under an assumption of weak convergence, in the absence of a spectral gap, the convergence rates of the time-average in von Neumann's Ergodic Theorem depend on sequences of time going to infinity.

Abstract:We consider discrete Schr"odinger operators on the line with potentials generated by a minimal homeomorphism on a compact metric space and a continuous sampling function. We introduce the concepts of topological and metric repetition property. Assuming that the underlying dynamical system satisfies one of these repetition properties, we show using Gordon's Lemma that for a generic continuous sampling function, the associated Schr"odinger operators have no eigenvalues in a topological or metric sense, respectively. We present a number of applications, particularly to shifts and skew-shifts on the torus.

Spectral Bounds on Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds: Associativity and the Trace Formula

Abstract:We constrain the low-energy spectra of Laplace operators on closed hyperbolic manifolds and orbifolds in three dimensions, including the standard Laplace-Beltrami operator on functions and the Laplacian on powers of the cotangent bundle. Our approach employs linear programming techniques to derive rigorous bounds by leveraging two types of spectral identities. The first type, inspired by the conformal bootstrap, arises from the consistency of the spectral decomposition of the product of Laplace eigensections, and involves the Laplacian spectra as well as integrals of triple products of eigensections. We formulate these conditions in the language of representation theory of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ and use them to prove upper bounds on the first and second Laplacian eigenvalues. The second type of spectral identities follows from the Selberg trace formula. We use them to find upper bounds on the spectral gap of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on hyperbolic 3-orbifolds, as well as on the systole length of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, as a function of the volume. Further, we prove that the spectral gap $\lambda_1$ of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on all closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds satisfies $\lambda_1 < 47.32$. Along the way, we use the trace formula to estimate the low-energy spectra of a large set of example orbifolds and compare them with our general bounds, finding that the bounds are nearly sharp in several cases.
