Abstract:We study bounds on eigenvalue gaps for finite quotients of periodic Jacobi matrices on trees. We prove an Alon-Boppana type bound for the spectral gap and a comparison result for other eigenvalue gaps.

Abstract:We introduce a function of the density of states for periodic Jacobi matrices on trees and prove a useful formula for it. This allows new, streamlined proofs of the gap labeling and Aomoto index theorems. We prove a version of this new formula for the Anderson model on trees.

Abstract:We consider ergodic Jacobi operators and obtain estimates on the Lebesgue measure and the distance between maximum and minimum points of the spectrum in terms of the Lyapunov exponent. Our proofs are based on results from logarithmic potential theory and their connections with spectral theory of Jacobi operators.

Abstract:This paper investigates the spectral properties of Jacobi matrices with limit-periodic coefficients. We show that for a residual set of such matrices, the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure, and the spectral measures are purely singular continuous. For a dense set of limit-periodic Jacobi matrices we can strengthen the result and show that the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero lower box counting dimension, and hence in particular of zero Hausdorff dimension, while still retaining the singular continuity of the spectral type. We also show how results of this nature can be established by fixing the off-diagonal coefficients and varying only the diagonal coefficients, and, in a more restricted version, by fixing the diagonal coefficients to be zero and varying only the off-diagonal coefficients. We apply these results to produce examples of weighted Laplacians on the multidimensional integer lattice having purely singular continuous spectral type and zero-dimensional spectrum.

Opening Gaps in the Spectrum of Strictly Ergodic Jacobi and CMV Matrices

Abstract:We prove that dynamically defined Jacobi and CMV matrices associated with generic continuous sampling functions have all gaps predicted by the Gap Labelling Theorem open. We also give a mechanism for generic gap opening for quasi-periodic analytic sampling functions in the subcritical region following from the analyticity of resonance tongue boundaries for both Jacobi and CMV matrices.

Computer Validation of Open Gaps for the Almost Mathieu Operator with Critical Coupling

Abstract:We present some computer assisted methods to prove the existence of spectral gaps for the Almost Mathieu operator at critical coupling and give rigorous numerical estimates on their size. As an example we show that the first 8 gaps predicted by the Gap Labelling theorem are open when $\omega=(\sqrt{5}-1)/2$ and 12 of them are open when $\omega=e-2$. A dynamical method based on the constructive conjugation to a hyperbolic cocycle and a spectral method based on the rigorous computation of the eigenvalues of finite-dimensional matrices are presented. We also present some experiments and conjectures on gap size for the associated peridodic problems.

Abstract:The spectral gap occupies a role of central importance in many open problems in physics. We present an approach for evaluating the spectral gap of a Hamiltonian from a simple ratio of two expectation values, both of which are evaluated using a quantum state that is evolved in imaginary time. In principle, the only requirement is that the initial state is supported on both the ground and first excited states. We demonstrate this approach for the Fermi-Hubbard and transverse field Ising models through numerical simulation.

Abstract:In general, point spectrum of an almost periodic Jacobi matrix can depend on the element of the hull. In this paper, we study the hull of the limit-periodic Jacobi matrix corresponding to the equilibrium measure of the Julia set of the polynomial $z^2-\lambda$ with large enough $\lambda$; this is the leading model in inverse spectral theory of ergodic operators with zero measure spectrum. We prove that every element of the hull has empty point spectrum.

Maximum spectral gaps of graphs

Abstract:The spread of a graph $G$ is the difference $\lambda_1 - \lambda_n$ between the largest and smallest eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. Breen, Riasanovsky, Tait and Urschel recently determined the graph on $n$ vertices with maximum spread for sufficiently large $n$. In this paper, we study a related question of maximizing the difference $\lambda_{i+1} - \lambda_{n-j}$ for a given pair $(i, j)$ over all graphs on $n$ vertices. We give upper bounds for all pairs $(i, j)$, exhibit an infinite family of pairs where the bound is tight, and show that for the pair $(1, 0)$ the extremal example is unique. These results contribute to a line of inquiry pioneered by Nikiforov aiming to maximize different linear combinations of eigenvalues over all graphs on $n$ vertices.

Abstract:In this paper we consider one-dimensional diffusions with constant coefficients in a finite interval with jump boundary and a certain deterministic jump distribution. We use coupling methods in order to identify the spectral gap in the case of a large drift and prove that that there is a threshold drift above which the bottom of the spectrum no longer depends on the drift. As a Corollary to our result we are able to answer two questions concerning elliptic eigenvalue problems with non-local boundary conditions formulated previously by Iddo Ben-Ari and Ross Pinsky.

Abstract:The research on spectral inequalities for discrete Schrödinger operators has proved fruitful in the last decade. Indeed, several authors analysed the operator’s canonical relation to a tridiagonal Jacobi matrix operator. In this paper, we consider a generalisation of this relation with regard to connecting higher order Schrödinger-type operators with symmetric matrix operators with arbitrarily many nonzero diagonals above and below the main diagonal. We thus obtain spectral bounds for such matrices, similar in nature to the Lieb-Thirring inequalities.

Abstract:The relative distance between eigenvalues of the compression of a not necessarily semibounded self-adjoint operator to a closed subspace and some of the eigenvalues of the original operator in a gap of the essential spectrum is considered. It is shown that this distance depends on the maximal angles between pairs of associated subspaces. This generalises results by Drmač in [Linear Algebra Appl. 244 (1996), 155--163] from matrices to not necessarily (semi)bounded operators.

Abstract:Given a finite regular graph G=(V,E) and a metric space (X,d_X), let $gamma_+(G,X) denote the smallest constant $\gamma_+>0$ such that for all f,g:V\to X we have: \frac{1}{|V|^2}\sum_{x,y\in V} d_X(f(x),g(y))^2\le \frac{\gamma_+}{|E|} \sum_{xy\in E} d_X(f(x),g(y))^2. In the special case X=R this quantity coincides with the reciprocal of the absolute spectral gap of $G$, but for other geometries the parameter \gamma_+(G,X), which we still think of as measuring the non-linear spectral gap of G with respect to X (even though there is no actual spectrum present here), can behave very differently. Non-linear spectral gaps arise often in the theory of metric embeddings, and in the present paper we systematically study the theory of non-linear spectral gaps, partially in order to obtain a combinatorial construction of super-expander -- a family of bounded-degree graphs G_i=(V_i,E_i), with \lim_{i\to \infty} |V_i|=\infty, which do not admit a coarse embedding into any uniformly convex normed space. In addition, the bi-Lipschitz distortion of G_i in any uniformly convex Banach space is \Omega(\log |V_i|), which is the worst possible behavior due to Bourgain's embedding theorem. Such remarkable graph families were previously known to exist due to a tour de force algebraic construction of Lafforgue. Our construction is different and combinatorial, relying on the zigzag product of Reingold-Vadhan-Wigderson.

Spectral Determinants of Almost Equilateral Quantum Graphs

Abstract:Kirchoff's matrix tree theorem of 1847 connects the number of spanning trees of a graph to the spectral determinant of the discrete Laplacian [6]. Recently an analogue was obtained for quantum graphs relating the number of spanning trees to the spectral determinant of a Laplacian acting on functions on a metric graph with standard (Neumann-like) vertex conditions [11]. This result holds for quantum graphs where the edge lengths are close together. A quantum graph where the edge lengths are all equal is called equilateral. Here we consider equilateral graphs where we perturb the length of a single edge (almost equilateral graphs). We analyze the spectral determinant of almost equilateral complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, and circulant graphs. This provides a measure of how fast the spectral determinant changes with respect to changes in an edge length. We apply these results to estimate the width of a window of edge lengths where the connection between the number of spanning trees and the spectral determinant can be observed. The results suggest the connection holds for a much wider window of edge lengths than is required in [11].

Abstract:We consider finite graphs whose vertexes are supersingular elliptic curves, possibly with level structure, and edges are isogenies. They can be applied to the study of modular forms and to isogeny based cryptography. The main result of this paper is an upper bound on the modules of the eigenvalues of their adjacency matrices, which in particular implies that these graphs are Ramanujan. We also study the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrices, the number of connected components, the automorphisms of the graphs, and the connection between the graphs and modular forms.

On Eigenvalue Gaps of Integer Matrices

Abstract:Given an $n\times n$ matrix with integer entries in the range $[-h,h]$, how close can two of its distinct eigenvalues be? The best previously known examples have a minimum gap of $h^{-O(n)}$. Here we give an explicit construction of matrices with entries in $[0,h]$ with two eigenvalues separated by at most $h^{-n^2/16+o(n^2)}$. Up to a constant in the exponent, this agrees with the known lower bound of $\Omega((2\sqrt{n})^{-n^2}h^{-n^2})$ \cite{mahler1964inequality}. Bounds on the minimum gap are relevant to the worst case analysis of algorithms for diagonalization and computing canonical forms of integer matrices. In addition to our explicit construction, we show there are many matrices with a slightly larger gap of roughly $h^{-n^2/32}$. We also construct 0-1 matrices which have two eigenvalues separated by at most $2^{-n^2/64+o(n^2)}$.

Abstract:In this note we study the eigenvalue growth of infinite graphs with discrete spectrum. We assume that the corresponding Dirichlet forms satisfy certain Sobolev-type inequalities and that the total measure is finite. In this sense, the associated operators on these graphs display similarities to elliptic operators on bounded domains in the continuum. Specifically, we prove lower bounds on the eigenvalue growth and show by examples that corresponding upper bounds can not be established.

Abstract:We prove bounds of the form $\sum_{e\in I\cap\sigma_\di (H)} \dist (e,\sigma_\e (H))^{1/2} \leq L^1$-norm of a perturbation, where $I$ is a gap. Included are gaps in continuum one-dimensional periodic Schrödinger operators and finite gap Jacobi matrices where we get a generalized Nevai conjecture about an $L^1$ condition implying a Szegő condition. One key is a general new form of the Birman--Schwinger bound in gaps.
