Abstract:We prove nonhalting of the Turing machine dubbed "Skelet #17", known to be one of the toughest 5-state, 2-symbol Turing machines to analyze. Combined with the efforts of The Busy Beaver Challenge, we are therefore able to show that BB(5), the fifth Busy Beaver number, equals 47,176,870.

Abstract:The busy beaver value BB(n) is the maximum number of steps made by any n-state, 2-symbol deterministic halting Turing machine starting on blank tape. The busy beaver function $n \mapsto \text{BB}(n)$ is uncomputable and, from below, only 4 of its values, BB(1) ... BB(4), are known to date. This leads one to ask: from above, what is the smallest BB value that encodes a major mathematical challenge? Knowing BB(4,888) has been shown by Yedidia and Aaronson [28] to be at least as hard as solving Goldbach's conjecture, with a subsequent improvement, as yet unpublished, to BB(27) [4,1]. We prove that knowing BB(15) is at least as hard as solving the following Collatz-related conjecture by Erdős, open since 1979 [9]: for all n > 8 there is at least one digit 2 in the base 3 representation of $2^n$. We do so by constructing an explicit 15-state, 2-symbol Turing machine that halts if and only if the conjecture is false. This 2-symbol Turing machine simulates a conceptually simpler 5-state, 4-symbol machine which we construct first. This makes, to date, BB(15) the smallest busy beaver value that is related to a natural open problem in mathematics, bringing to light one of the many challenges underlying the quest of knowing busy beaver values.

Abstract:The busy beaver is a well-known specific example of a non-computable function. Whilst many aspects of this problem have been investigated, it is not always easy to find thorough and convincing evidence for the claims made about the maximality of particular machines, and the phenomenal size of some of the numbers involved means that it is not obvious that the problem can be feasibly addressed at all. In this paper we address both of these issues. We discuss a framework in which the busy beaver problem and similar problems may be addressed, and the appropriate processes for providing evidence of claims made. We also show how a simple heuristic, which we call the observant otter, can be used to evaluate machines with an extremely large number of execution steps required to terminate. We also show empirical results for an implementation of this heuristic which show how this heuristic is effective for all known ‘monster’ machines.

Abstract:The busy beaver problem is a well-known example of a non-computable function. In order to determine a particular value of this function, it is necessary to generate and classify a large number of Turing machines. The advent of cloud computing provides unparallelled opportunities to explore this problem, but also to develop infrastructures that support distributed investigations and relevant computational evidence for all results obtained, such as a list of all machines of a given size together with their classifications. This list can then be used for variants of the problem or related ones such as the placid platypus problem. We investigate how to generate classes of machines to be considered for the busy beaver problem, which involves separating the generation of machines from their analysis. We discuss the relationship between quadruple and quintuple variants of Turing machines, and show that the latter are more general than the former. We give some formal results to justify our strategy for minimising the number of machines generated, and define a process reflecting this strategy for generating machines. We describe our implementation, and the results of generating various classes of machines with up to 5 states or up to 5 symbols, all of which (together with our code) are available on the author's website.

Abstract:In this article, we will show that uncomputability is a relative property not only of oracle Turing machines, but also of subrecursive classes. We will define the concept of a Turing submachine, and a recursive relative version for the Busy Beaver function which we will call Busy Beaver Plus function. Therefore, we will prove that the computable Busy Beaver Plus function defined on any Turing submachine is not computable by any program running on this submachine. We will thereby demonstrate the existence of a "paradox" of computability a la Skolem: a function is computable when "seen from the outside" the subsystem, but uncomputable when "seen from within" the same subsystem. Finally, we will raise the possibility of defining universal submachines, and a hierarchy of negative Turing degrees.

Abstract:The game of Hangman is a classical asymmetric two player game in which one player, the setter, chooses a secret word from a language, that the other player, the guesser, tries to discover through single letter matching queries, answered by all occurrences of this letter if any. In the Evil Hangman variant, the setter can change the secret word during the game, as long as the new choice is consistent with the information already given to the guesser. We show that a greedy strategy for Evil Hangman can perform arbitrarily far from optimal, and most importantly, that playing optimally as an Evil Hangman setter is computationally difficult. The latter result holds even assuming perfect knowledge of the language, for several classes of languages, ranging from Finite to Turing Computable. The proofs are based on reductions to Dominating Set on 3-regular graphs and to the Membership problem, combinatorial problems already known to be computationally hard.

Abstract:It is known that the fifth Engel word $E_5$ is trivial in the 2-generator group of exponent four $B(2,4)$, and so can be written as a product of fourth powers. Explicit products of 250 and 28 powers are known, using fourth powers of words up to lengths four and ten respectively. Using a reduction technique based on the recursive enumerability of the set of trivial words in a finite presentation we were able to rewrite $E_5$ as a product of 26 fourth powers of words up to length five.

Using binary string to prove the Collatz conjecture

Abstract:We introduce a full binary directed tree structure to represent the set of natural numbers, further categorizing them into three distinct subsets: pure odd numbers, pure even numbers, and mixed numbers. We adopt a binary string representation for natural numbers and elaborate on the composite methodology encompassing odd- and even-number functions. Our analysis focuses on examining the iteration sequence (or composition) of the Collatz function and its reduced variant, which serves as an analog to the inverse function, to scrutinize the validity of the Collatz conjecture. To substantiate this conjecture, we incorporate binary strings into an algebraic formula that captures the essence of the Collatz sequence. By this means, we transform discrete powers of 2 into continuous counterparts, ultimately culminating in the smallest natural number, 1. Consequently, the sequence generated through infinite iterations of the Collatz function emerges as an eventually periodic sequence, thereby validating an enduring 87-year-old conjecture.

An Automated Approach to the Collatz Conjecture

Abstract:We explore the Collatz conjecture and its variants through the lens of termination of string rewriting. We construct a rewriting system that simulates the iterated application of the Collatz function on strings corresponding to mixed binary-ternary representations of positive integers. We prove that the termination of this rewriting system is equivalent to the Collatz conjecture. We also prove that a previously studied rewriting system that simulates the Collatz function using unary representations does not admit termination proofs via natural matrix interpretations, even when used in conjunction with dependency pairs. To show the feasibility of our approach in proving mathematically interesting statements, we implement a minimal termination prover that uses natural/arctic matrix interpretations and we find automated proofs of nontrivial weakenings of the Collatz conjecture. Although we do not succeed in proving the Collatz conjecture, we believe that the ideas here represent an interesting new approach.

A Formal Proof of R(4,5)=25

Abstract:In 1995, McKay and Radziszowski proved that the Ramsey number R(4,5) is equal to 25. Their proof relies on a combination of high-level arguments and computational steps. The authors have performed the computational parts of the proof with different implementations in order to reduce the possibility of an error in their programs. In this work, we prove this theorem in the interactive theorem prover HOL4 limiting the uncertainty to the small HOL4 kernel. Instead of verifying their algorithms directly, we rely on the HOL4 interface to MiniSat SAT to prove gluing lemmas. To reduce the number of such lemmas and thus make the computational part of the proof feasible, we implement a generalization algorithm. We verify that its output covers all the possible cases by implementing a custom SAT-solver extended with a graph isomorphism checker.

Abstract:Guo-Niu Han [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2006.14070" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2006.14070">arXiv:2006.14070</a> [math.CO]] has introduced a new combinatorial object named standard puzzle. We use digraphs to show the relations between numbers in standard puzzles and propose a skeleton model. By this model, we solve the enumeration problem of over fifty thousand standard puzzle sequences. Most of them can be represented by classical numbers, such as Catalan numbers, double factorials, Secant numbers and so on. Also, we prove several identities in standard puzzle sequences.

Abstract:The Skolem Problem asks to determine whether a given integer linear recurrence sequence has a zero term. This problem arises across a wide range of topics in computer science, including loop termination, formal languages, automata theory, and control theory, amongst many others. Decidability of the Skolem Problem is notoriously open. The state of the art is a decision procedure for recurrences of order at most 4: an advance achieved some 40 years ago, based on Baker's theorem on linear forms in logarithms of algebraic numbers. A new approach to the Skolem Problem was recently initiated via the notion of a Universal Skolem Set: a set $S$ of positive integers such that it is decidable whether a given non-degenerate linear recurrence sequence has a zero in $S$. Clearly, proving decidability of the Skolem Problem is equivalent to showing that $\mathbb{N}$ itself is a Universal Skolem Set. The main contribution of the present paper is to construct a Universal Skolem Set that has lower density at least $0.29$. We show moreover that this set has density one subject to the Bateman-Horn conjecture. The latter is a central unifying hypothesis concerning the frequency of prime numbers among the values of systems of polynomials.

Abstract:In the 1960's Gisbert Hasenjaeger built Turing Machines from electromechanical relays and uniselectors. Recently, Glaschick reverse engineered the program of one of these machines and found that it is a universal Turing machine. In fact, its program uses only four states and two symbols, making it a very small universal Turing machine. (The machine has three tapes and a number of other features that are important to keep in mind when comparing it to other small universal machines.) Hasenjaeger's machine simulates Hao Wang's B machines, which were proved universal by Wang. Unfortunately, Wang's original simulation algorithm suffers from an exponential slowdown when simulating Turing machines. Hence, via this simulation, Hasenjaeger's machine also has an exponential slowdown when simulating Turing machines. In this work, we give a new efficient simulation algorithm for Wang's B machines by showing that they simulate Turing machines with only a polynomial slowdown. As a second result, we find that Hasenjaeger's machine also efficiently simulates Turing machines in polynomial time. Thus, Hasenjaeger's machine is both small and fast. In another application of our result, we show that Hooper's small universal Turing machine simulates Turing machines in polynomial time, an exponential improvement.

Abstract:Based on the propositional description of even Goldbach conjecture, in order to verify the truth of even Goldbach conjecture, we will deeply discuss this question and present a new computing model of $G{{N}_{e}}TM$ Turing Machine. This paper proves the infinite existence of even Goldbach's conjecture and obtains the following new results: 1. The criterion of general probability speculation of the existence judgment for even Goldbach conjecture is studied, and which at least have a formula satisfy the deduction result of matching requirements for even Goldbach conjecture in the model $\bmod \overset{\equiv }{\mathop{M}}\,({{N}_{e}})$. 2. In the controller of the $G{{N}_{e}}TM$ model, the algorithm problem of the prime matching rule is given, regardless of whether the computer can be recursively solved, the rule algorithm for designing prime numbers in controllers is computer recursively solvable. 3. The judgment problem that about even Goldbach conjecture whether infinite existence is studied. The new research result has shown that according to the constitution model of the full arranged matrix of given even number ${N}_{e}$, and if only given an even number ${N}_{e}$, it certainly exists the matrix model $Mod\overset{\equiv }{\mathop{X}}\,(p)$ and is proved to be equivalent. Therefore, it proves indirectly that the model $G{{N}_{e}}TM$ does not exist halting problem, and it also indicate that the even Goldbach conjecture is infinity existence.
