Abstract:We discuss an interesting sequence defined recursively; namely, sequence A105774 from the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, and study some of its properties. Our main tools are Fibonacci representation, finite automata, and the Walnut theorem-prover. We also prove two new results about synchronized sequences.

Abstract:Using the classic two's complement notation of signed integers, the fundamental arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication are identical to those for unsigned binary numbers. We introduce a Fibonacci-equivalent of the two's complement notation and we show that addition in this numeration system can be performed by a deterministic finite-state transducer. The result is based on the Berstel adder, which performs addition of the usual Fibonacci representations of nonnegative integers and for which we provide a new constructive proof. Moreover, we characterize the Fibonacci-equivalent of the two's complement notation as an increasing bijection between $\mathbb{Z}$ and a particular language.

Abstract:The Fibonacci numbers are familiar to all of us. They appear unexpectedly often in mathematics, so much there is an entire journal and a sequence of conferences dedicated to their study. However, there is also another sequence of numbers associated with Fibonacci. In The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, a sequence of numbers which is an approximation to the real root of the cubic polynomial. Fibonacci gave the first few numbers in the sequence in the manuscript Flos from around 1215. Fibonacci stated an error in the last number and based on this error we try, in this paper to reconstruct the method used by Fibonacci. Fibonacci gave no indication on how he determined the numbers and the problem of identifying possible methods was raised already the year after the first transcribed version of the manuscript was published in 1854. There are three possible methods available to Fibonacci to solve the cubic equation; two of the methods have been shown to give Fibonacci's result. In this paper we show that also the third method gives the same result, and we argue that this is the most likely method.

Abstract:Let ftm = 0111010010001... be the analogue of the Thue-Morse sequence in Fibonacci representation. In this note we show how, using the Walnut theorem-prover, to obtain a measure of its complexity, previously studied by Jamet, Popoli, and Stoll. We strengthen one of their theorems and disprove one of their conjectures.

TMF is (weakly) non-deterministic Turing machine consisting of five semi-infinite tapes (Master Tape, Synchro Tape, Backup Tape, Backup Synchro Tape, User Tape) and four controlling components (Program, Daemon, Apparatus, User). Computational process consists of three phases (Program Phase, Failure Phase, Repair Phase). C++ Simulator of a Turing machine with faults, failures and recovery has been developed.

Abstract:The Fibonacci numbers are a sequence of integers in which every number after the first two, 0 and 1, is the sum of the two preceding numbers. These numbers are well known and algorithms to compute them are so easy that they are often used in introductory algorithms courses. In this paper, we present twelve of these well-known algorithms and some of their properties. These algorithms, though very simple, illustrate multiple concepts from the algorithms field, so we highlight them. We also present the results of a small-scale experimental comparison of their runtimes on a personal laptop. Finally, we provide a list of homework questions for the students. We hope that this paper can serve as a useful resource for the students learning the basics of algorithms.

Abstract:In the famous paper in which he introduced what is now known as the Turing machine, Alan Turing gave a definition of computable real numbers under which it turns out that multiplication by 3 is uncomputable. This shortcoming vanished in a Correction to his paper that Turing himself published shortly afterwards, but it clearly illustrates the subtlety of defining computability issues correctly. In this paper, we give the name "printable" to real numbers that Turing originally called "computable", we recall what is now the generally accepted definition of computable real numbers (which is not quite Turing's amended definition, but is equivalent to it), and we contrast the two notions. Despite the fact that the multiplication by 3 of printable numbers is uncomputable, as opposed to the same operation on computable numbers, a real number is computable if and only if it is printable. The resolution of this apparent paradox is that no machine can transform the "computable" description of a real number to its "printable" description, as Turing proved in his Correction. Finally, we address the subtle issue of allowing or not the printable description of a real number to end with an infinite sequence of 9s (or of 1s in binary), which was left open by Turing in his Correction. Several of these results were already known, as they appear in scattered places, some in non-refereed publications, but we give a unified treatment with some different proofs and a historical perspective.

Abstract:The following magic trick is at the center of this paper. While the audience writes the first ten terms of a Fibonacci-like sequence (the sequence following the same recursion as the Fibonacci sequence), the magician calculates the sum of these ten terms very fast by multiplying the 7th term by 11. This trick is based on the divisibility properties of partial sums of Fibonacci-like sequences. We find the maximum Fibonacci number that divides the sum of the Fibonacci numbers 1 through $n$. We discuss the generalization of the trick for other second-order recurrences. We show that a similar trick exists for Pell-like sequences and does not exist for Jacobhstal-like sequences.

Put also $[a^{-1} \!\bmod b] := \infty$ when $\gcd(a, b) > 1$. We determine all positive integers $m$ and $n$ such that $[F_m^{-1} \bmod F_n]$ is a Fibonacci number. This extends a previous result of Prempreesuk, Noppakaew, and Pongsriiam, who considered the special case $m \in \{3, n - 3, n - 2, n - 1\}$ and $n \geq 7$. Abstract:A $4^-$-power is a non-empty word of the form $XXXX^-$, where $X^-$ is obtained from $X$ by erasing the last letter. A binary word is called {\em faux-bonacci} if it contains no $4^-$-powers, and no factor 11. We show that faux-bonacci words bear the same relationship to the Fibonacci morphism that overlap-free words bear to the Thue-Morse morphism. We prove the analogue of Fife's Theorem for faux-bonacci words, and characterize the lexicographically least and greatest infinite faux-bonacci words.

Abstract:The Turing machine is an abstract concept of a computing device which introduced new models for computation. The idea of Fuzzy algorithms defined by Zadeh and Lee was followed by introducing Fuzzy Turing Machine (FTM) to create a platform for a new fuzzy computation model. Then, in his investigations on its computational power, Wiedermann showed that FTM is able to solve undecidable problems. His suggested FTM structure, which highly resembles the original definition was one of the most well-known classical definitions of FTM lately.To improve some of its weaknesses and vague points which will be discussed extensively in this paper, we will develop a more complete definition for fuzzy Turing machines. Our proposed definition of FTM, which encompasses the conventional definition, is motivated from the definition of General Fuzzy Automata (GFA) introduced by Doostfatemeh and Kremer. As it improved the conventional definition of fuzzy automata, especially the problem of membership assignment and multi-membership resolution, we also improved the same aspects of FTM through the definition of Comprehensive Fuzzy Turing Machine (CFTM). In addition, we address on some possible vaguenesses in FTM was not the subject of focus in fuzzy automata. As example, we investigate the issue of multi-path and multi-direction which are possible in case of nondeterminism. Finally, we show the simplicity, applicability and computational efficiency of the CFTM through an explanatory example.

Abstract:Indexed monoidal algebras are introduced as an equivalent structure for self-dual compact closed categories, and a coherence theorem is proved for the category of such algebras. Turing automata and Turing graph machines are defined by generalizing the classical Turing machine concept, so that the collection of such machines becomes an indexed monoidal algebra. On the analogy of the von Neumann data-flow computer architecture, Turing graph machines are proposed as potentially reversible low-level universal computational devices, and a truly reversible molecular size hardware model is presented as an example.

Abstract:Let {F(n)} be the Fibonacci sequence defined by F0 = 0, F1 = 1, F(n) + 1 = F(n) + F(n-1) (n greater-than-or-equal-to 1). It is well known that F(p-)(5/p) = 0 (mod p) for any odd prime p, where (-) denotes the Legendre symbol. In 1960 D.D. Wall [13] asked whether p2/F(p-)(5/p) is always impossible; up to now this is still open. In this paper the sum [GRAPHICS] is expressed in terms of Fibonacci numbers. As applications we obtain a new formula for the Fibonacci quotient F(p-)(5/p)/p and a criterion for the relation p/F(p-1)/4 (if p = 1 (mod 4)), where p not-equal 5 is an odd prime. We also prove that the affirmative answer to Wall's question implies the first case of FLT (Fermat's last theorem); from this it follows that the first case of FLT holds for those exponents which are (odd) Fibonacci primes or Lucas primes.
