Abstract:We prove that the quotient of Jacobian of a curve whose genus is greater than or equal to 5 under the action of a finite group acting on the curve is never uniruled, and classify all curves of genus 3 and 4 whose quotients of Jacobian is uniruled.

Abstract:In this notes we study complex projective plane curves whose graded module of Jacobian syzygies is generated by its minimal degree component. Examples of such curves include the smooth curves as well as the maximal Tjurina curves. However, this class of curves seems to be surprisingly large. In particular, any line arrangement $\mathcal A$ of $d=2k+1\geq 5 $ lines having only double and triple points is in this class if the number of triple points is $k$ and if they are all situated on a line $L \in \mathcal A$, see Theorem 6.2

Simplicity of some Jacobians with many automorphisms

Abstract:We study an explicit $(2g-1)$-dimensional family of Jacobian varieties of dimension $\frac{d-1}2(g-1)$, arising from quotient curves of unramified cyclic coverings of prime degree $d$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\ge 2$. By using a deformation argument, we prove that the generic element of the family is simple. Furthermore, we completely describe their endomorphism algebra, and we show that they admit a rank $\frac{d-1}2-1$ group of non-polarized automorphisms. As an application of these results, we prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map for étale cyclic coverings of hyperelliptic curves of odd prime degree under some slight numerical restrictions. This result generalizes in several directions previous results on genus 2.

Genus-2 Jacobians with torsion points of large order

Abstract:We produce new explicit examples of genus-2 curves over the rational numbers whose Jacobian varieties have rational torsion points of large order. In particular, we produce a family of genus-2 curves over Q whose Jacobians have a rational point of order 48, parametrized by a rank-2 elliptic curve over Q, and we exhibit a single genus-2 curve over Q whose Jacobian has a rational point of order 70, the largest order known. We also give new examples of genus-2 Jacobians with rational points of order 27, 28, and 39. Most of our examples are produced by `gluing' two elliptic curves together along their n-torsion subgroups, where n is either 2 or 3. The 2-gluing examples arise from techniques developed by the author in joint work with Leprévost and Poonen 15 years ago. The 3-gluing examples are made possible by an algorithm for explicit 3-gluing over non-algebraically closed fields recently developed by the author in joint work with Bröker, Lauter, and Stevenhagen.

Abstract:We investigate Selmer groups of Jacobians of curves that admit an action of a non-trivial group of automorphisms, and give applications to the study of the parity of Selmer ranks. Under the Shafarevich--Tate conjecture, we give an expression for the parity of the Mordell--Weil rank of an arbitrary Jacobian in terms of purely local invariants; the latter can be seen as an arithmetic analogue of local root numbers, which, under the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, similarly control parities of ranks of abelian varieties. As an application, we give a new proof of the parity conjecture for elliptic curves. The core of the paper is devoted to developing the arithmetic theory of Jacobians for Galois covers of curves, including decomposition of their L-functions, and the interplay between Brauer relations and Selmer groups.

Curves on powers of hyperelliptic Jacobians

Abstract:For a curve of genus at least four which is either very general or very general hyperelliptic, we classify all ways in which a power of its Jacobian can be isogenous to a product of Jacobians of curves. As an application, we show that, for a very general principally polarized abelian variety of dimension at least four, or the intermediate Jacobian of a very general cubic threefold, no power is isogenous to a product of Jacobians of curves. This confirms some cases of the Coleman-Oort conjecture. We further deduce from our results some progress on the question whether the integral Hodge conjecture fails for such abelian varieties.

Abstract:We construct three families of pairs of genus 2 curves over a field K, whose Jacobians are isomorphic as unpolarized abelian varieties. Each family is parameterized by an open subset of the Projective line over K. Our construction is based on a remark in a paper by Howe. Later, we describe an obstruction to perusing the same technique over Q.

3-Torsion Subgroups of Jacobians of Plane Quartics

Abstract:In this paper we give an algorithm to find the 3-torsion subgroup of the Jacobian of a smooth plane quartic curve. We describe $3-$torsion points in terms of cubics which triply intersect the curve, and use this to define a system of equations whose solution set corresponds to the coefficients of these cubics. We compute the points of this zero-dimensional, degree $728$ scheme first by approximation, using homotopy continuation and Newton-Raphson, and then using lattice reduction or continued fractions to obtain accurate expressions for these points. We describe how the Galois structure of the field of definition of the $3$-torsion subgroup can be used to compute local conductor exponents, including at $p=2$.

Abstract:L. Moret-Bailly constructed families of genus 2 curves with supersingular Jacobian. In this paper we first classify the reducible fibers of a Moret-Bailly family using linear algebra over a quaternion algebra. The main result is an algorithm that exploits properties of two reducible fibers to compute a hyperelliptic model for any irreducible fiber of a Moret-Bailly family.

Abstract:We consider the question of when a Jacobian of a curve of genus $2g$ admits a $(2,2)$-isogeny to two polarized dimension $g$ abelian varieties. We find that one of them must be a Jacobian itself and, if the associated curve is hyperelliptic, so is the other. For $g=2$ this allows us to describe $(2,2)$-decomposable genus $4$ Jacobians in terms of Prym varieties. We describe the locus of such genus $4$ curves in terms of the geometry of the Igusa quartic threefold. We also explain how our characterization relates to Prym varieties of unramified double covers of plane quartic curves, and we describe this Prym map in terms of $6$ and $7$ points in $\mathbb{P}^3$. We also investigate which genus $4$ Jacobians admit a $2$-isogeny to the square of a genus $2$ Jacobian and give a full description of the hyperelliptic ones. While most of the families we find are of the expected dimension $1$, we also find a family of unexpectedly high dimension~$2$.

Irrationality of the general smooth quartic $3$-fold using intermediate Jacobians

Abstract:We prove that the intermediate Jacobian of the Klein quartic $3$-fold $X$ is not isomorphic, as a principally polarized abelian variety, to a product of Jacobians of curves. As corollaries we deduce (using a criterion of Clemens-Griffiths) that $X$, as well as the general smooth quartic $3$-fold, is irrational. These corollaries were known: Iskovskih-Manin \cite{IM} proved that every smooth quartic $3$-fold is irrational. However, the method of proof here is different than that of \cite{IM} and is significantly simpler.

Abstract:We describe an algorithm which, on input a genus $2$ curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobian $J/\mathbb{Q}$ has real multiplication by a quadratic order in which $7$ splits, outputs twists of the Klein quartic curve parametrising elliptic curves whose mod $7$ Galois representations are isomorphic to a sub-representation of the mod $7$ Galois representation attached to $J/\mathbb{Q}$. Applying this algorithm to genus $2$ curves of small conductor in families of Bending and Elkies--Kumar we exhibit a number of genus $2$ Jacobians whose Tate--Shafarevich groups (unconditionally) contain a non-trivial element of order $7$ which is visible in an abelian three-fold.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field. The connected monodromy field of $A$ is the minimal field over which the images of all the $\ell$-adic torsion representations have connected Zariski closure. We show that for all even $g \geq 4$, there exist infinitely many geometrically nonisogenous abelian varieties $A$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ of dimension $g$ where the connected monodromy field is strictly larger than the field of definition of the endomorphisms of $A$. Our construction arises from explicit families of hyperelliptic Jacobians with definite quaternionic multiplication.

Abstract:A set of multi-homogeneous equations for the Jacobian of a genus two curve is given. The approach used is to write down affine equations for the Jacobian minus various tranlations of the Theta-divisor by [2]-division points, and then to write down affine glue equations for the overlaps. Taking multi-projective completions for all of these then yields a complete multi-projective two-dimensional variety whose points are in one-to-one correspondence with degree zero divisor classes on the curve (i.e. the Picard group). This multi-projective variety then becomes a complete projective two-dimensional variety under the Segre imbedding.

Abstract:We address the question concerning the birational geometry of the strata of holomorphic and quadratic differentials. We show strata of holomorphic and quadratic differentials to be uniruled in small genus by constructing rational curves via pencils on K3 and del Pezzo surfaces respectively. Restricting to genus $3\leq g\leq6$, we construct projective bundles over a rational varieties that dominate the holomorphic strata with length at most $g-1$, hence showing in addition that these strata are unirational.

Abstract:We show that the Jacobians of prestable curves over toroidal varieties always admit Néron models. These models are rarely quasi-compact or separated, but we also give a complete classification of quasi-compact separated group-models of such Jacobians. In particular we show the existence of a maximal quasi-compact separated group model, which we call the saturated model, which has the extension property for all torsion sections. The Néron model and the saturated model coincide over a Dedekind base, so the saturated model gives an alternative generalisation of the classical notion of Néron models to higher-dimensional bases; in the general case we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Néron model and saturated model to coincide. The key result, from which most others descend, is that the logarithmic Jacobian of \cite{Molcho2018The-logarithmic} is a log Neron model of the Jacobian.

Abstract:Let C be a complex smooth projective algebraic curve endowed with an action of a finite group G such that the quotient curve has genus at least 3. We prove that if the G-curve C is very general for these properties, then the natural map from the group algebra QG to the algebra of Q-endomorphisms of its Jacobian is an isomorphism. We use this to obtain (topological) properties regarding certain virtual linear representations of a mapping class group. For example, we show that the connected component of the Zariski closure of such a representation acts Q-irreducibly in a G-isogeny space of H^1(C; Q)and with image often a Q-almost simple group.
On Galois covers of curves and arithmetic of Jacobians

Abstract:We study the arithmetic of curves and Jacobians endowed with the action of a finite group $G$. This includes a study of the basic properties, as $G$-modules, of their $\ell$-adic representations, Selmer groups, rational points and Shafarevich-Tate groups. In particular, we show that $p^\infty$-Selmer groups are self-dual $G$-modules, and give various `$G$-descent' results for Selmer groups and rational points. Along the way we revisit, and slightly refine, a construction going back to Kani and Rosen for associating isogenies to homomorphisms between permutation representations. With a view to future applications, it is convenient to work throughout with curves that are not assumed to be geometrically connected (or even connected); such curves arise naturally when taking Galois closures of covers of curves. For lack of a suitable reference, we carefully detail how to deduce the relevant properties of such curves and their Jacobians from the more standard geometrically connected case.

Abstract:We study the Jacobian scheme of a plane algebraic curve at an ordinary singularity, characterizing it through a geometric property. We compute the Tjurina number for a family of curves at an ordinary singularity showing that it reaches the minimum possible value, using very elementary methods, essentially Gröbner basis. We give an algorithm that gives the analytic type of a double point using the algebraic version of the Mather-Yau Theorem.
