Abstract:The overarching theme of the following pages is that mathematical logic -- centered around the incompleteness theorems -- is first and foremost an investigation of $\textit{computation}$, not arithmetic. Guided by this intuition we will show the following. * First, we'll all but eliminate the need for Gödel numbers. * Next, we'll introduce a novel notational device for representable functions and walk through a condensed demonstration that Peano Arithmetic can represent every computable function. It has achieved Turing completeness. * Continuing, we'll derive the Diagonal Lemma and First Incompleteness Theorem using significantly simplified proofs. * Approaching the Second Incompleteness Theorem, we'll be able to use some self-referential trickery to avoid much of the technical morass surrounding it; arriving at three separate versions. * Extending the analogy between the First Incompleteness Theorem and the Unsolvability of the Halting Problem produces an equivalent of the Nondeterministic Time Hierarchy Theorem from the field of computational complexity. * Lastly, we'll briefly peer into the realm of the uncomputable by connecting our ideas to oracles.

Abstract:In the famous paper in which he introduced what is now known as the Turing machine, Alan Turing gave a definition of computable real numbers under which it turns out that multiplication by 3 is uncomputable. This shortcoming vanished in a Correction to his paper that Turing himself published shortly afterwards, but it clearly illustrates the subtlety of defining computability issues correctly. In this paper, we give the name "printable" to real numbers that Turing originally called "computable", we recall what is now the generally accepted definition of computable real numbers (which is not quite Turing's amended definition, but is equivalent to it), and we contrast the two notions. Despite the fact that the multiplication by 3 of printable numbers is uncomputable, as opposed to the same operation on computable numbers, a real number is computable if and only if it is printable. The resolution of this apparent paradox is that no machine can transform the "computable" description of a real number to its "printable" description, as Turing proved in his Correction. Finally, we address the subtle issue of allowing or not the printable description of a real number to end with an infinite sequence of 9s (or of 1s in binary), which was left open by Turing in his Correction. Several of these results were already known, as they appear in scattered places, some in non-refereed publications, but we give a unified treatment with some different proofs and a historical perspective.

Abstract:The last century saw dramatic challenges to the Laplacian predictability which had underpinned scientific research for around 300 years. Basic to this was Alan Turing's 1936 discovery (along with Alonzo Church) of the existence of unsolvable problems. This paper focuses on incomputability as a powerful theme in Turing's work and personal life, and examines its role in his evolving concept of machine intelligence. It also traces some of the ways in which important new developments are anticipated by Turing's ideas in logic.

Abstract:We discuss the possibility of constructing a function that validates the definition or not definition of the partial recursive functions of one variable. This is a topic in computability theory, which was first approached by Alan M. Turing in 1936 in his foundational work "On Computable Numbers". Here we face it using the Model of computability of the recursive functions instead of the Turing's machines, but the results are transferable from one to another paradigm with ease. Recursive functions that are not defined at a given point, correspond to the Turing machines that "do not end" for a given input. What we propose Is a slight slip from the orthodox point of view: the issue of the self-reference and of the self-validation is not an impediment in imperative languages.

Abstract:Incomputability as a mathematical notion arose from work of Alan Turing and Alonzo Church in the 1930s. Like Turing himself, it attracted less attention than it deserved beyond the confines of mathematics. Today our experiences in computer science, physics, biology, artificial intelligence, economics and the humanities point to the importance of the notion for understanding the world around us. This article takes a Turing centenary look at how the interface between the computable world and the incomputable formed a central theme in Turing's work - from the early establishment of the standard model of the stored program computer, to the late work on emergence of form in nature, and the first approaches to understanding and simulating human intelligence. Turing's thinking was remarkably prescient, and his legacy still impacts on much of our work. The incomputable may turn out to be a specially important part of the legacy, with consequences that Alan Turing himself could not have envisaged.

Context-Dependent Functions: Narrowing the Realm of Turing's Halting Problem

Abstract:This paper describes Turing's Halting Problem (HP), and reviews the classic proof that no function exists that can solve HP. The concept of a "Context-Dependent Function" (CDF), whose behavior varies based on seemingly irrelevant changes to a program calling that function, is introduced, and the proof of HP's undecidability is re-examined in light of CDFs. The existence of CDFs is established via a pair of examples of such functions. The conclusion of the proof of HP's undecidability is thus shown to be overly strong, as it doesn't show that no solution to HP exists, but rather that a solution must be a CDF. A higher-level analysis of this work is given, followed by conclusions and comments on future work.

Abstract:Since Cocke and Minsky proved 2-tag systems universal, they have been extensively used to prove the universality of numerous computational models. Unfortunately, all known algorithms give universal 2-tag systems that have a large number of symbols. In this work, tag systems with only 2 symbols (the minimum possible) are proved universal via an intricate construction showing that they simulate cyclic tag systems. Our simulation algorithm has a polynomial time overhead, and thus shows that binary tag systems simulate Turing machines in polynomial time. We immediately find applications of our result. We reduce the halting problem for binary tag systems to the Post correspondence problem for 4 pairs of words. This improves on 7 pairs, the previous bound for undecidability in this problem. Following our result, only the case for 3 pairs of words remains open, as the problem is known to be decidable for 2 pairs. As a further application, we find that the matrix mortality problem is undecidable for sets with five $3\times 3$ matrices and for sets with two $15\times 15$ matrices. The previous bounds for the undecidability in this problem was seven $3\times 3$ matrices and two $ 21\times 21$ matrices.

Abstract:With the great success in simulating many intelligent behaviors using computing devices, there has been an ongoing debate whether all conscious activities are computational processes. In this paper, the answer to this question is shown to be no. A certain phenomenon of consciousness is demonstrated to be fully represented as a computational process using a quantum computer. Based on the computability criterion discussed with Turing machines, the model constructed is shown to necessarily involve a non-computable element. The concept that this is solely a quantum effect and does not work for a classical case is also discussed.

Abstract:Semi-unification is the combination of first-order unification and first-order matching. The undecidability of semi-unification has been proven by Kfoury, Tiuryn, and Urzyczyn in the 1990s by Turing reduction from Turing machine immortality (existence of a diverging configuration). The particular Turing reduction is intricate, uses non-computational principles, and involves various intermediate models of computation. The present work gives a constructive many-one reduction from the Turing machine halting problem to semi-unification. This establishes RE-completeness of semi-unification under many-one reductions. Computability of the reduction function, constructivity of the argument, and correctness of the argument is witnessed by an axiom-free mechanization in the Coq proof assistant. Arguably, this serves as comprehensive, precise, and surveyable evidence for the result at hand. The mechanization is incorporated into the existing, well-maintained Coq library of undecidability proofs. Notably, a variant of Hooper's argument for the undecidability of Turing machine immortality is part of the mechanization.

Abstract:The Turing Machine Halting Problem is a major problem in computer theory, Russell’s Paradox is the root of the Third Mathematical Crisis, and the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem is a major discovery in modern logic. The three have had a profound impact on the development of science and have attracted the attention of scientific and philosophical circles. However, since the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem was put forward, the scientific and philosophical significance of its proof has been questioned; in particular, Wittgenstein regards it as a certain logical paradox, and Russell’s Paradox has not yet been settled. This paper makes a detailed analysis of the three based on the view of dialectical infinity. The author notes that the Principle of Comprehension based on the view of actual infinity is the root of Russell’s Paradox. The Turing Machine Halting Problem shows that it is impossible to make an actual-infinite ultimate judgment of the constantly generated infinite world, but the philosophical significance of the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem is that our understanding of the world is essentially potentially infinite. At the end of the article, the author raises several questions about the proof of the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem, finds out the specific paradox form in the proof, points out the high consistency of its proof method and Russell’s Paradox, which strongly supports Wittgenstein’s view. The author points out that the philosophical basis of the proof of the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem is the idea of actual infinity, the proof of the theorem is based on a logically invalid circular formula, the contradiction of the proof originates from the Gödel formula itself, and cannot be attributed to the incompleteness of the system, so the proof is wrong. Therefore, the conclusion of this paper is that the world is constantly developing and changing, and our human understanding of the world is essentially a potential infinite, that is, the world is Aristotelian, not Platonic.

Abstract:Classical models of computation traditionally resort to halting schemes in order to enquire about the state of a computation. In such schemes, a computational process is responsible for signalling an end of a calculation by setting a halt bit, which needs to be systematically checked by an observer. The capacity of quantum computational models to operate on a superposition of states requires an alternative approach. From a quantum perspective, any measurement of an equivalent halt qubit would have the potential to inherently interfere with the computation by provoking a random collapse amongst the states. This issue is exacerbated by undecidable problems such as the \textit{Entscheidungsproblem} which require universal computational models, \textit{e.g.} the classical Turing machine, to be able to proceed indefinitely. In this work we present an alternative view of quantum computation based on production system theory in conjunction with Grover's amplitude amplification scheme that allows for (1) a detection of halt states without interfering with the final result of a computation; (2) the possibility of non-terminating computation and (3) an inherent speedup to occur during computations susceptible of parallelization. We discuss how such a strategy can be employed in order to simulate classical Turing machines.

On Godel's treatment of the undecidable in 1931

Abstract:In this article we discuss the proof in the short unpublished paper appeared in the 3rd volume of Godel's Collected Works entitled "On undecidable sentences" (*1931?), which provides an introduction to Godel's 1931 ideas regarding the incompleteness of arithmetic. We analyze the meaning of the negation of the provability predicate, and how it is meant not to lead to vicious circle. We show how in fact in Godel's entire argument there is an omission regarding the cases of non-provability, which, once taken into consideration again, allow a completely different view of Godel's entire argument of incompleteness. Previous results of the author are applied to show that the definition of a contradiction is included in the argument of *1931?. Furthermore, an examination of the application of substitution in the well-known Godel formula as a violation of uniqueness is also briefly presented, questioning its very derivation.

Abstract:The two major traditions of the Theory of Computation, each asking claim to similar motivations and aspirations, have for the most part run a parallel non-intersecting course. On one hand, we have the tradition arising from logic and computer science addressing problems with more recent origins, using tools of combinatorics and discrete mathematics. On the other hand, we have numerical analysis and scientific computation emanating from the classical tradition of equation solving and the continuous mathematics of calculus. Both traditions are motivated by a desire to understand the essence of computation, of algorithm; both aspire to discover useful, even profound, consequences. While the logic and computer science communities are keenly aware of Alan Turing's seminal role in the former (discrete) tradition of the theory of computation, most remain unaware of Alan Turing's role in the latter (continuous) tradition, this notwithstanding the many references to Turing in the modern numerical analysis/computational mathematics literature. In this talk I recognize Turing's work in the foundations of numerical computation. I also indicate its role in complexity theory today, and how it provides a unifying concept for the two major traditions in the Theory of Computation.
