Abstract:We exhibit generically nonreduced components of the Hilbert scheme of at least $21$ points on a smooth variety of dimension at least four. The result was announced in~[Jelisiejew__open_problems] and answers a question~[Problem~3.8, AIMPL]. The method is similar to the one of~[\S6, Jelisiejew-Šivic].

Abstract:We construct irrational irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme of points of affine n-dimensional space, for n at least 12. We start with irrational components of the Hilbert scheme of curves in P^3 and use methods developed by Jelisiejew to relate these to irreducible components of the Hilbert schemes of points of A^n. The result solves Problem XX of [J. Jelisiejew, Open problems in deformations of Artinian algebras, Hilbert schemes and around, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2307.08777" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.08777">arXiv:2307.08777</a>, 2023].

Abstract:We classify the irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on non-reduced algebraic plane curves, and give a formula for the multiplicities of the irreducible components. The irreducible components are indexed by partitions of $n$; all have dimension $n$; and their multiplicities are given as a polynomial of the parts of the corresponding partitions.

Abstract:We use the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula to calculate the Hirzebruch ?y genus Xy(S[n]), where S[n] is the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of a surface S. Combinatorial interpretation of the weights of the fixed points of the natural torus action on ( 2)[n] is used. This is the first step to prove a conjectural formula about the elliptic genus of the Hilbert schemes.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{I}_{d,g,R}$ be the union of irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme whose general points parametrize smooth, irreducible, curves of degree $d$, genus $g$, which are non--degenerate in the projective space $\mathbb{P}^R$. Under some numerical assumptions on $d$, $g$ and $R$, we construct irreducible components of $\mathcal{I}_{d,g,R}$ other than the so-called {\em distinguished component}, dominating the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of smooth genus--$g$ curves, which are generically smooth and turn out to be of dimension higher than the expected one. The general point of any such a component corresponds to a curve $X \subset \mathbb{P}^R$ which is a suitable ramified $m$--cover of an irrational curve $Y \subset \mathbb{P}^{R-1}$, $m \geqslant 2$, lying in a surface cone over $Y$. The paper extends some of the results in previous papers of Y. Choi, H. Iliev, S. Kim (cf. [12,13] in Bibliography).

Abstract:For $\gamma \geq 7$ and $g \geq 6\gamma + 5$, we construct a family $\mathcal{F}^{\prime}$ of curves lying on cones in $\mathbb{P}^{g-3\gamma+1}$ over smooth non-degenerate curves of genus $\gamma$ and degree $g-2\gamma$ in $\mathbb{P}^{g-3\gamma+1}$. We show that $\dim \mathcal{F}^{\prime} = 2g-\gamma-1 + (g-3\gamma+1)^2$. For a general curve $X^{\prime}$ from the family $\mathcal{F}^{\prime}$, we compute the dimension of the space of its first-order deformations. We prove that the family $\mathcal{F}^{\prime}$ gives rise to an irreducible, non-reduced component $\mathcal{D}^{\prime}$ of the Hilbert scheme $\mathcal{I}_{2g-4\gamma + 1, g, g - 3\gamma + 1}$, which parametrizes smooth, irreducible, non-degenerate curves of degree $2g-4\gamma + 1$ and genus $g$ in $\mathbb{P}^{g-3\gamma+1}$. We obtain $\dim T_{[X^{\prime}]} \mathcal{D}^{\prime} = \dim \mathcal{D}^{\prime} + 1 = \dim \mathcal{F}^{\prime} + 1$.

The geometry of double nested Hilbert schemes of points on curves

Abstract:Let $C$ be a smooth curve. In this paper we investigate the geometric properties of the double nested Hilbert scheme of points on $C$, a moduli space introduced by the third author in the context of BPS invariants of local curves and sheaf counting on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We prove this moduli space is connected, reduced and of pure dimension; we list its components via an explicit combinatorial characterisation and we show they can be resolved, when singular, by products of symmetric products of $C$. We achieve this via a purely algebraic analysis of the factorisation properties of the monoid of reverse plane partitions. We discuss the (virtual) fundamental class of the moduli space, we describe the local equations cutting it inside a smooth ambient space, and finally we provide a closed formula for its motivic class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties.

Unexpected but recurrent phenomena for Quot and Hilbert schemes of points

Abstract:We investigate some aspects of the geometry of two classical generalisations of the Hilbert schemes of points. Precisely, we show that parity conjecture for $\text{Quot}_r^d\mathbb{A}^3$ already fails for $d=8$ and $r=2$ and that lots of the elementary components of the nested Hilbert schemes of points on smooth quasi-projective varieties of dimension at least 4 are generically non-reduced. We also deduce that nested Hilbert schemes of points on smooth surfaces have generically non-reduced components. Finally, we give an infinite family of elementary components of the classical Hilbert schemes of points.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider curves on a cone that pass through the vertex and are also triple covers of the base of the cone, which is a general smooth curve of genus and degree e in . Using the free resolution of the ideal of such a curve found by Catalisano and Gimigliano, and a technique concerning deformations of curves introduced by Ciliberto, we show that the deformations of such curves remain on cones over a deformation of the base curve. This allows us to prove that for and , there exists a non-reduced component of the Hilbert scheme of smooth curves of genus and degree in . We show that for a general point .

Abstract:We investigate the Hilbert scheme of points on a smooth threefold. We introduce a notion of broken Gorenstein structure for finite schemes, and show that its existence guarantees smoothness on the Hilbert scheme. Moreover, we conjecture that it is exhaustive: every smooth point admits a broken Gorenstein structure. We give an explicit characterization of the smooth points on the Hilbert scheme of A^3 corresponding to monomial ideals. We investigate the nature of the singular points, and prove several conjectures by Hu. Along the way, we obtain a number of additional results, related to linkage classes, nested Hilbert schemes, and a bundle on the Hilbert scheme of a surface.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that, for any $n\ge 3$, there exist infinitely many $r\in \N$ and for each of them a smooth, connected curve $C_r$ in $¶^r$ such that $C_r$ lies on exactly $n$ irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme $\hilb(¶^r)$. Abstract:For $n\geq 1$, we construct the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on any crepant partial resolution of a Kleinian singularity as a Nakajima quiver variety for an explicit GIT stability parameter. We provide both a short proof involving a combinatorial argument, in which the isomorphism is implicit, and a more satisfying geometric proof where the isomorphic is constructed explicitly. As a corollary, we compute the nef and movable cones of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on any crepant partial resolution of a Kleinian singularity in terms of the summands of a tilting bundle on the surface.

Abstract:It remains an open problem to classify the Hilbert functions of double points in $\mathbb{P}^2$. Given a valid Hilbert function $H$ of a zero-dimensional scheme in $\mathbb{P}^2$, we show how to construct a set of fat points $Z \subseteq \mathbb{P}^2$ of double and reduced points such that $H_Z$, the Hilbert function of $Z$, is the same as $H$. In other words, we show that any valid Hilbert function $H$ of a zero-dimensional scheme is the Hilbert function of a set of a positive number of double points and some reduced points. For some families of valid Hilbert functions, we are also able to show that $H$ is the Hilbert function of only double points. In addition, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Hilbert function of a scheme of a double points, or double points plus one additional reduced point, to be the Hilbert function of points with support on a star configuration of lines.

Abstract:A recent paper by the first and third authors together with Sabourin raised the question of what the possible Hilbert functions are for fat point subschemes of the form $2p_1+...+2p_r$, for all possible choices of $r$ distinct points in the projective plane. We study this problem for $r$ points in the plane over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic in case either $r \le 8$ or the points lie on a (possibly reducible) conic. In either case, it follows from work of the second author that there are only finitely many configuration types of points, where our notion of configuration type is a generalization of the notion of a representable combinatorial geometry, also known as a representable simple matroid. (We say $p_1,...,p_r$ and $p'_1,...,p'_r$ have the same {\it configuration type} if for all choices of nonnegative integers $m_i$, $Z=m_1p_1+...+m_rp_r$ and $Z'=m_1p'_1+...+m_rp'_r$ have the same Hilbert function.) Assuming either that $7 \le r\le 8$ (see recent work of Guardo and the second author for the cases $r\le 6$) or that the points $p_i$ lie on a conic, we explicitly determine all the configuration types, and show how the configuration type and the coefficients $m_i$ determine (in an explicitly computable way) the Hilbert function (and sometimes the graded Betti numbers) of $Z=m_1p_1+...+m_rp_r$. We demonstrate our results by explicitly listing all Hilbert functions for schemes of $r\le 8$ double points, and for each Hilbert function we state precisely how the points must be arranged (in terms of the configuration type) to obtain that Hilbert function.

Abstract:We denote by $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ the Hilbert scheme of smooth curves, which is the union of components whose general point corresponds to a smooth, irreducible and non-degenerate curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\mathbb{P}^r.$ In this article, we study $\mathcal{H}_{15,g,5}$ for every possible genus $g$ and determine when it is irreducible. We also study the moduli map $\mathcal{H}_{15,g,5}\rightarrow\mathcal{M}_g$ and several key properties such as gonality of a general element as well as characterizing smooth elements of each component.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{k}$ be a closed field of characteristic zero. We prove that all monomial ideals sit in the curvilinear component of the Hilbert scheme of points of the affine space $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbf{k}}^n$, answering a long-standing question about the distribution of torus-fixed points among punctual components. This result confirms that the punctual Hilbert scheme is connected, a property previously established only for the full Hilbert scheme in 1966 by Hartshorne.

A Semi-orthogonal Sequence in the Derived Category of the Hilbert Scheme of Three Points

Abstract:For a smooth projective variety $X$ of dimension $d \geq 5$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero, it is shown in this paper that the bounded derived category of the Hilbert scheme of three points $X^{[3]}$ admits a semi-orthogonal sequence of length $\binom{d-3}{2}$. Each subcategory in this sequence is equivalent to the derived category of $X$ and realized as the image of a Fourier-Mukai transform along a Grassmannian bundle $\mathbb{G}$ over $X$ parametrizing planar subschemes in $X^{[3]}$. The main ingredient in the proof is the computation of the normal bundle of $\mathbb{G}$ in $X^{[3]}$. An analogous result for generalized Kummer varieties is deduced at the end.

Abstract:We prove a closed formula for the generating function $\mathsf Z_d(t)$ of the motives $[\mathrm{Hilb}^d(\mathbb A^n)_0] \in K_0(\mathrm{Var}_{\mathbb C})$ of punctual Hilbert schemes, summing over $n$, for fixed $d>0$. The result is an expression for $\mathsf Z_d(t)$ as the product of the zeta function of $\mathbb P^{d-1}$ and a polynomial $\mathsf P_d(t)$, which in particular implies that $\mathsf Z_d(t)$ is a rational function. Moreover, we reduce the complexity of $\mathsf P_d(t)$ to the computation of $d-8$ initial data, and therefore give explicit formulas for $\mathsf Z_d(t)$ in the cases $d \leq 8$, which in turn yields a formula for $[\mathrm{Hilb}^{\leq 8}(X)]$ for any smooth variety $X$. We perform a similar analysis for the Quot scheme of points, obtaining explicit formulas for the full generating function (summing over all ranks and dimensions) for $d \leq 4$. In the limit $n \to \infty$, we prove that the motives $[\mathrm{Hilb}^d(\mathbb A^n)_0]$ stabilise to the class of the infinite Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(d-1,\infty)$. Finally, exploiting our geometric methods, we conjecture (and partially confirm) a structural result on the 'error' measuring the discrepancy between the count of higher dimensional partitions and MacMahon's famous guess.

Hilbert scheme of linearly normal curves in $\mathbb{P}^r$ with index of speciality five and beyond

Abstract:We study the Hilbert scheme of smooth, irreducible, non-degenerate and linearly normal curves of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\mathbb{P}^r$ ($r\ge 3$) whose complete and very ample hyperplane linear series $\mathcal{D}$ have relatively small index of speciality $i(\mathcal{D})=g-d+r$. In particular we determine the existence as well as the non-existence of Hilbert schemes of linearly normal curves $\mathcal{H}^{\mathcal{L}}_{d,g,r}$ for every possible triples $(d,g,r)$ with $i(\mathcal{D})=5$ and $r\ge 3$. We also determine the irreducibility of the Hilbert scheme $\mathcal{H}^{\mathcal{L}}_{g+r-5,g,r}$ when the genus $g$ is near to the minimal possible value with respect to the dimension of the projective space $\mathbb{P}^r$ for which $\mathcal{H}^{\mathcal{L}}_{g+r-5,g,r}\neq\emptyset$, say $r+9\le g\le r+11$. In the course of proofs of key results, we show the existence of linearly normal curves of degree $d\ge g+1$ with arbitrarily given index of speciality with some mild restriction on the genus $g$.
