Abstract:We study the field of rational first integrals of distributions. We show that for a distribution on 3 dimensional manifolds there exists a tangent vector field with the same field of first integrals. We also show a similar result for integrable distributions in any dimension.

Abstract:A contact distribution on projective three-space is defined by the 1-form $x_2dx_1-x_1dx_2+x_4dx_3-x_3dx_4$, up to a change of projective coordinates. The family of contact distributions is parameterized by the complement of the Pfaff-Plücker quadric in the projective 5-space of antisymmetric $4\times4$ matrices. A foliation of dimension 1 and degree $d$ is specified by a polynomial vector field $\sum{}p_i\partial_{x_i}, p_i$ homogeneous of degree $d$. The foliation is called Legendrian if tangent to some distribution of contact. Our goal is to give formulas for the dimensions and degrees of the varieties of Legendrian foliations, and of the varieties of foliations tangent to a pencil of planes.

Dimension two holomorphic distributions on four-dimensional projective space

Abstract:We study two-dimensional holomorphic distributions on $\mathbb{P}^4$. We classify dimension two distributions, of degree at most $2$, with either locally free tangent sheaf or locally free conormal sheaf and whose singular scheme has pure dimension one. We show that the corresponding sheaves are split. Next, we investigate the geometry of such distributions, studying from maximally non-integrable to integrable distributions. In the maximally non-integrable case, we show that the distribution is either of Lorentzian type or a push-forward by a rational map of the Cartan prolongation of a singular contact structure on a weighted projective 3-fold. We study distributions of dimension two in $\mathbb{P}^4$ whose the conormal sheaves are the Horrocks-Mumford sheaves, describing the numerical invariants of their singular schemes which are smooth and connected. Such distributions are maximally non-integrable, uniquely determined by their singular schemes and invariant by a group $H_5 \rtimes SL(2,\mathbb{Z}_5) \subset Sp(4, \mathbb{Q})$, where $H_5$ is the Heisenberg group of level $5$. We prove that the moduli spaces of Horrocks-Mumford distributions are irreducible quasi-projective varieties and we determine their dimensions. Finally, we observe that the space of codimension one distributions, of degree $d\geq 6$, on $\mathbb{P}^4$ have a family of degenerated flat holomorphic Riemannian metrics. Moreover, the degeneracy divisors of such metrics consist of codimension one distributions invariant by $H_5 \rtimes SL(2,\mathbb{Z}_5)$ and singular along a degenerate abelian surface with $(1,5)$-polarization and level-$5$-structure.

Abstract:We solve the equivalence problem for rank 3 completely nonholonomic vector distributions with 6-dimensional square on a smooth manifold of arbitrary dimension n under very mild genericity conditions. The main idea is to consider the projectivization of the annihilator of a given 3-dimensional distribution. It is naturally foliated by characteristic curves, which are also called the abnormal extremals of the distribution. The dynamics of vertical fibers along characteristic curves defines certain curves of flags of isotropic and coisotropic subspaces in a linear symplectic space. The problem of equivalence of distributions can be essentially reduced to the differential geometry of such curves. The class of all 3-distributions under consideration is split into a finite number of subclasses according to the Young diagram of their flags. The local geometry of distributions can be recovered from the properties of the symmetry group of so-called flat curves of flags associated with this Young diagram. In each subclass we describe the flat distribution and construct a canonical frame for any other distribution. It turns out that for n>6 in the most nontrivial case the symmetry algebra of the flat distribution can be described in terms of rational normal curves (their secants and tangential developables) in projective spaces and its dimension grows exponentially with respect to n.
Liouvillian integrability of three dimensional vector fields

Abstract:We consider a three dimensional complex polynomial, or rational, vector field (equivalently, a two-form in three variables) which admits a Liouvillian first integral. We prove that there exists a first integral whose differential is the product of a rational 1-form with a Darboux function, or there exists a Darboux Jacobi multiplier. Moreover, we prove that Liouvillian integrability {in any dimension $n\geq 3$} always implies the existence of a first integral that is obtained by two successive integrations from one-forms with coefficients in a finite algebraic extension of the rational function field.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a foliation defined on a complex projective manifold $M$ of dimension $n$ and admitting a holomorphic vector field $X$ tangent to it along some non-empty Zariski-open set. In this paper we prove that if $X$ has sufficiently many integral curves that are given by meromorphic functions defined on $\mathbb{C}$ then the restriction of $\mathcal{F}$ to any invariant complex $2$-dimensional analytic set admits a first integral of Liouvillean type. In particular, on $\mathbb{C}^3$, every rational vector fields whose solutions are meromorphic functions defined on $\mathbb{C}$ admits a non-empty invariant analytic set of dimension $2$ where the restriction of the vector field yields a Liouvillean integrable foliation.

We classify (1) totally geodesic Legendrian surfaces, (2) closed minimal Legendrian surfaces of genus smaller than or equal to 1 and complete minimal Legendrian surfaces with the non-negative Gauss curvature, and (3) complete stable minimal Legendrian surfaces.

Abstract:We exploit a natural correspondence between holomorphic $(2,3,5)$-distributions and nondegenerate lines on holomorphic contact manifolds of dimension $5$ to present a new perspective in the study of symmetries of $(2,3,5)$-distributions. This leads to a number of new results in this classical subject, including an unexpected relation between the multiply-transitive families of models having $7$- and $6$-dimensional symmetries, and a one-to-one correspondence between equivalence classes of nontransitive $(2,3,5)$-distributions with $6$-dimensional symmetries and nonhomogeneous nondegenerate Legendrian curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. An ingredient for establishing the former is an explicit classification of homogeneous nondegenerate Legendrian curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$, which we present.

Abstract:We study foliations by curves on the three-dimensional projective space with no isolated singularities, which is equivalent to assuming that the conormal sheaf is locally free. We provide a classification of the topological and algebraic invariants of the conormal sheaves and singular schemes for such foliations by curves, up to degree 3. In particular, we prove that foliations by curves of degree 1 or 2 are contained in a pencil of planes or are Legendrian, and are given by the complete intersection of two codimension one distributions. Furthermore, we prove that the conormal sheaf of a foliation by curves of degree 3 with reduced singular scheme either splits as a sum of line bundles or is an instanton bundle. For degree larger than 3, we focus on two classes of foliations by curves, namely Legendrian foliations and those whose conormal sheaf is a twisted null-correlation bundle. We give characterizations of such foliations, describe their singular schemes and their moduli spaces.

Abstract:In this work, we mainly deal with a two-dimensional singular holomorphic distribution $\mathcal{D}$ defined on $M$, in the two situations $M=\mathbb{P}^n$ or $M=(\mathbb{C}^n,0)$, tangent to a one-dimensional foliation $\mathcal{G}$ on $M$, and whose tangent sheaf $T_{\mathcal{D}}$ is locally free. We provide sufficient conditions on $\mathcal{G}$ so that there is another one-dimensional foliation $\mathcal{H}$ on $M$ tangent to $\mathcal{D}$, such that their respective tangent sheaves satisfy the splitting relation $T_{\mathcal{D}}=T_{\mathcal{G}} \oplus T_{\mathcal{H}}$. As an application, we show that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a codimension one holomorphic foliation on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with locally free tangent sheaf and tangent to a nontrivial holomorphic vector field on $\mathbb{P}^3$, then $T_{\mathcal{F}}$ splits. Some division results for vector fields and differential forms are also obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the existence of uniform rational lc polytopes for foliations with functional boundaries in dimension $\leq 3$. As an application, we prove the global ACC for foliated threefolds with arbitrary DCC coefficients. We also provide applications on the accumulation points of lc thresholds of foliations in dimension $\leq 3$.

Abstract:We characterize non-degenerate Lagrangians of the form $ \int f(u_x, u_y, u_t) dx dy dt $ such that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations $ (f_{u_x})_x+ (f_{u_y})_y+ (f_{u_t})_t=0 $ are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. The integrability conditions constitute an over-determined system of fourth order PDEs for the Lagrangian density $f$, which is in involution and possess interesting differential-geometric properties. The moduli space of integrable Lagrangians, factorized by the action of a natural equivalence group, is three-dimensional. Familiar examples include the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) and the Boyer-Finley Lagrangians, $f=u_x^3/3+u_y^2-u_xu_t$ and $f=u_x^2+u_y^2-2e^{u_t}$, respectively. A complete description of integrable cubic and quartic Lagrangians is obtained. Up to the equivalence transformations, the list of integrable cubic Lagrangians reduces to three examples, $ f=u_xu_yu_t, f=u_x^2u_y+u_yu_t, and f=u_x^3/3+u_y^2-u_xu_t ({\rm dKP}).$ There exists a unique integrable quartic Lagrangian, $ f=u_x^4+2u_x^2u_t-u_xu_y-u_t^2.$ We conjecture that these examples exhaust the list of integrable polynomial Lagrangians which are essentially three-dimensional (it was verified that there exist no polynomial integrable Lagrangians of degree five). We prove that the Euler-Lagrange equations are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions if and only if they possess a scalar pseudopotential playing the role of a dispersionless `Lax pair'. Taut foliations and contact pairs in dimension three

Abstract:We present a new construction of codimension-one foliations from pairs of contact structures in dimension three. This constitutes a converse result to a celebrated theorem of Eliashberg and Thurston on approximations of foliations by contact structures. Under suitable hypotheses on the initial contact pairs, the foliations we construct are taut, allowing us to characterize taut foliations entirely in terms of contact geometry. This viewpoint reveals some surprising flexible phenomena for taut foliations, and provides new insight into the $L$-space conjecture.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a holomorphic foliation of degree $2$ on $\mathbb{P}^n$ with dimension $k\geq 2$. We prove that either $\mathcal{F}$ is algebraically integrable, or $\mathcal{F}$ is the linear pull-back of a degree-2 foliation by curves on $\mathbb{P}^{n-k+1}$, or $\mathcal{F}$ is a logarithmic foliation of type $(1^{n-k +1},2)$, or $\mathcal{F}$ is a logarithmic foliation of type $(1^{n-k+3})$, or $\mathcal{F}$ is the linear pull-back of a degree-2 foliation of dimension 2 on $\mathbb{P}^{n-k+2}$ tangent to an action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{aff}(\mathbb{C})$. Our work is in the spirit of the Axelrod-Singer papers, generalizes some of their results, and furnishes a new setting for the purely topological implications of their work.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the volume of algebraically integrable foliations and locally stable families. We show that, for any canonical algebraically integrable foliation, its volume belongs to a discrete set depending only on its rank and the volume of its general leaves. In particular, if the foliation is of general type, then its volume has a positive lower bound depending only on its rank and the volume of its general leaves. This implies some special cases of a question posed by Cascini, Hacon, and Langer. As a consequence, we show that the relative volume of a stable family with a normal generic fiber belongs to a discrete set if the dimension and the volume of its general fibers are bounded. Log versions of the aforementioned theorems are also provided and proved.

Geodesic vector fields, induced contact structures and tightness in dimension three

Abstract:In this paper, we provide new and simpler proofs of two theorems of Gluck and Harrison on contact structures induced by great circle or line fibrations. Furthermore, we prove that a geodesic vector field whose Jacobi tensor is parallel along flow lines (e.g. if the underlying manifold is locally symmetric) induces a contact structure if the 'mixed' sectional curvatures are nonnegative, and if a certain nondegeneracy condition holds. Additionally, we prove that in dimension three, contact structures admitting a Reeb flow which is either periodic, isometric, or free and proper, must be universally tight. In particular, we generalise an earlier result of Geiges and the author, by showing that every contact form on $\mathbb{R}^3$ whose Reeb vector field spans a line fibration is necessarily tight. Furthermore, we provide a characterisation of isometric Reeb vector fields. As an application, we recover a result of Kegel and Lange on Seifert fibrations spanned by Reeb vector fields, and we classify closed contact $3$-manifolds with isometric Reeb flows (also known as $R$-contact manifolds) up to diffeomorphism.

Abstract:We solve the Poincaré problem for plane foliations with only one dicritical divisor. Moreover, in this case, we give an algorithm that decides whether a foliation has a rational first integral and computes it in the affirmative case. We also provide an algorithm to compute a rational first integral of prefixed genus $g\neq 1$ of any type of plane foliation $\cf$. When the number of dicritical divisors dic$(\cf)$ is larger than two, this algorithm depends on suitable families of invariant curves. When dic$(\cf) = 2$, it proves that the degree of the rational first integral can be bounded only in terms of $g$, the degree of $\cf$ and the local analytic type of the dicritical singularities of $\cf$.

Abstract:We show that a singular Riemannian foliation of codimension two on a compact simply-connected Riemannian $(n+2)$-manifold, with regular leaves homeomorphic to the $n$-torus, is given by a smooth effective $n$-torus action. This solves in the negative for the codimension $2$ case a question about the existence of foliations by exotic tori on simply-connected manifolds.
