Toward an Artist-Centred AI

Abstract:Awareness about the immense impact that artificial intelligence (AI) might have or already has made on the social, economic, political, and cultural realities of our world has become part of the mainstream public discourse. Attributes such as ethical, responsible, or explainable emerge as associative and descriptive nominal references in guidelines that influence perspectives on AI application and development. This paper contextualizes the notions of suitability and desirability of principles, practices, and tools related to the use of AI in the arts. The result is a framework drafted as a set of atomic attributes that summarize the values of AI deemed important for artistic creativity. It was composed by examining the challenges that AI poses to art production, distribution, consumption, and monetization. Considering the differentiating potentials of AI and taking a perspective aside from the purely technical ontology, we argue that artistically pertinent AI should be unexpected, diversified, affordant, and evolvable.

The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to construct and use AI systems that can meet the needs and expectations of artists when using artificial intelligence (AI) technology in artistic creation. Specifically, the paper explores the following aspects:

1. **AI Ethics in Artistic Creation**: It discusses the ethical issues arising from the use of AI technology in artistic creation, such as bias, inequality, and injustice, and proposes the ethical responsibilities that artists should bear when using AI technology.

2. **The Impact of AI on Artistic Creation**: It analyzes how AI technology affects the production, distribution, consumption, and monetization of art, especially the homogenization of artistic styles and the limitations of creative production that may be caused by AI technology.

3. **Artist - Centered AI Framework**: It proposes an artist - centered AI framework aimed at guiding the application of AI technology in the art field. This framework includes four core attributes: unexpectedness, diversity, affordance, and evolvability. These attributes are designed to help artists use AI technology for more creative and personalized artistic creation.

4. **Creativity and Democratization**: It explores the value of AI technology in artistic creation, especially its role in promoting the overall creativity and cognitive processes of users, but also points out that the popularization of this technology does not mean the true democratization of artistic creation.

Through the above discussions, the paper aims to provide artists with a framework for understanding and using AI technology to promote more rich and diverse artistic creation.
