Abstract:We resolve Stillman's conjecture for families of polynomial rings that are graded by any abelian group under mild conditions. Conversely, we show that these conditions are necessary for the existence of a Stillman bound. This has applications even for the well-known standard graded case.

Abstract:We study several properties of multihomogeneous prime ideals. We show that the multigraded generic initial ideal of a prime has very special properties, for instance, its radical is Cohen-Macaulay. We develop a comprehensive study of multidegrees in arbitrary positive multigraded settings. In these environments, we extend the notion of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals by means of a standardization technique. Furthermore, we recover or extend important results in the literature, for instance: we provide a multidegree version of Hartshorne's result stating the upper semicontinuity of arithmetic degree under flat degenerations, and we give an alternative proof of Brion's result regarding multiplicity-free varieties.

Abstract:We study the relation between the multigraded Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a multihomogeneous ideal $I$ and the multidegrees of a Gröbner basis of $I$ with respect to the degree reverse lexicographical monomial order in generic coordinates. For the single graded case, forty years ago, Bayer and Stillman unravelled all aspects of this relation, which in turn the use to complexity estimates for the computation with Gröbner bases. We build on their work to introduce a bounding region of the multidegrees of minimal generators of multigraded Gröbner bases for $I$. We also use this region to certify the presence of some minimal generators close to its boundary. Finally, we show that, up to a certain shift, this region is related to the multigraded Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $I$.

Abstract:The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $\psi$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.

Abstract:We investigate complement-finite submonoids of the monoid of nonnegative integer points of a unipotent linear algebraic group $G$. These monoids are in general noncommutative but they specialize to the generalized numerical monoids of Cistco et al. We show that every unipotent numerical monoid has a unique finite minimal generating set. We propose a generalization of the Wilf conjecture in our setting. We contrast our Wilf conjecture against the Generalized Wilf Conjecture. Then we isolate two new families of unipotent numerical monoids called the {\em thick} and the {\em thin} unipotent numerical monoids. We prove that our Wilf conjecture holds for every thick (commutative) unipotent numerical monoid. Under additional assumptions on the conductors, we prove that our Wilf conjecture holds for every thin (commutative) unipotent numerical monoid.

The Grunwald problem and homogeneous spaces with non-solvable stabilisers

Abstract:We give an affirmative answer to the Grunwald problem for new families of non-solvable finite groups G, away from the set of primes dividing |G|. Furthermore, we show that such G verify the condition (BM), that is, the Brauer-Manin obstruction to weak approximation is the only one for quotients of SL_n by G. These new families include extensions of groups satisfying (BM) by kernels which are products of symmetric groups S_m, with $m\neq 2,6$, and alternating groups A_5. We also investigate (BM) for small groups by giving an explicit list of small order groups for which (BM) is unknown and we show that for many of them (BM) holds under Schinzel's hypothesis.

Multigraded strong Lefschetz property for balanced simplicial complexes

Abstract:Generalizing the strong Lefschetz property for an $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebra, we introduce the multigraded strong Lefschetz property for an $\mathbb{N}^m$-graded algebra. We show that, for $\bm{a} \in \mathbb{N}^m_+$, the generic $\mathbb{N}^m$-graded Artinian reduction of the Stanley-Reisner ring of an $\bm{a}$-balanced homology sphere over a field of characteristic $2$ satisfies the multigraded strong Lefschetz property. A corollary is the inequality $h_{\bm{b}} \leq h_{\bm{c}}$ for $\bm{b} \leq \bm{c} \leq \bm{a}-\bm{b}$ among the flag $h$-numbers of an $\bm{a}$-balanced simplicial sphere. This can be seen as a common generalization of the unimodality of the $h$-vector of a simplicial sphere by Adiprasito and the balanced generalized lower bound inequality by Juhnke-Kubitzke and Murai. We further generalize these results to $\bm{a}$-balanced homology manifolds and $\bm{a}$-balanced simplicial cycles over a field of characteristic $2$.

Abstract:Consider a smooth, projective family of canonically polarized varieties over a smooth, quasi-projective base manifold Y, all defined over the complex numbers. It has been conjectured that the family is necessarily isotrivial if Y is special in the sense of Campana. We prove the conjecture when Y is a surface or threefold. The proof uses sheaves of symmetric differentials associated to fractional boundary divisors on log canonical spaces, as introduced by Campana in his theory of Orbifoldes Geometriques. We discuss a weak variant of the Harder-Narasimhan Filtration and prove a version of the Bogomolov-Sommese Vanishing Theorem that take the additional fractional positivity along the boundary into account. A brief, but self-contained introduction to Campana's theory is included for the reader's convenience.

Abstract:We propose a generalization of the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture to the relative setting and prove that a strong form of it holds for families of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension. A key step of the proof consists in a truncated second main theorem type estimate in Nevanlinna theory for families of abelian varieties.
Rigidity of Symmetric Simplicial Complexes and the Lower Bound Theorem

Abstract:We show that, if $\Gamma$ is a point group of $\mathbb{R}^{k+1}$ of order two for some $k\geq 2$ and $\mathcal S$ is a $k$-pseudomanifold which has a free automorphism of order two, then either $\mathcal S$ has a $\Gamma$-symmetric infinitesimally rigid realisation in $\mathbb{R}^{k+1}$ or $k=2$ and $\Gamma$ is a half-turn rotation group.This verifies a conjecture made by Klee, Nevo, Novik and Zhang for the case when $\Gamma$ is a point-inversion group. Our result implies that Stanley's lower bound theorem for centrally symmetric polytopes extends to pseudomanifolds with a free simplicial involution, thus verifying (the inequality part) of another conjecture of Klee, Nevo, Novik and Zheng. Both results actually apply to a much larger class of simplicial complexes, namely the circuits of the simplicial matroid. The proof of our rigidity result adapts earlier ideas of Fogelsanger to the setting of symmetric simplicial complexes.

Conformal blocks for Galois covers of algebraic curves

Abstract:We study the spaces of twisted conformal blocks attached to a $\Gamma$-curve $\Sigma$ with marked $\Gamma$-orbits and an action of $\Gamma$ on a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, where $\Gamma$ is a finite group. We prove that if $\Gamma$ stabilizes a Borel subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$, then Propagation Theorem and Factorization Theorem hold. We endow a flat projective connection on the sheaf of twisted conformal blocks attached to a smooth family of pointed $\Gamma$-curves; in particular, it is locally free. We also prove that the sheaf of twisted conformal blocks on the stable compactification of Hurwitz stack is locally free. Let $\mathscr{G}$ be the parahoric Bruhat-Tits group scheme on the quotient curve $\Sigma/\Gamma$ obtained via the $\Gamma$-invariance of Weil restriction associated to $\Sigma$ and the simply-connected simple algebraic group $G$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We prove that the space of twisted conformal blocks can be identified with the space of generalized theta functions on the moduli stack of quasi-parabolic $\mathscr{G}$-torsors on $\Sigma/\Gamma$ when the level $c$ is divisible by $|\Gamma|$ (establishing a conjecture due to Pappas-Rapoport).

On Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture III: New Generic Lower Bounds

Abstract:In this paper the authors consider four questions of primary interest for the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups: (i) Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture, (ii) the Humphreys-Verma Question, (iii) whether $\operatorname{St}_r \otimes L(\lambda)$ is a tilting module for $L(\lambda)$ an irrreducible representation of $p^{r}$-restricted highest weight, and (iv) whether $\operatorname{Ext}^{1}_{G_{1}}(L(\lambda),L(\mu))^{(-1)}$ is a tilting module where $L(\lambda)$ and $L(\mu)$ have $p$-restricted highest weight. The authors establish affirmative answers to each of these questions with a new uniform bound, namely $p\geq 2h-4$ where $h$ is the Coxeter number. Notably, this verifies these statements for infinitely many more cases. Later in the paper, questions (i)-(iv) are considered for rank two groups where there are counterexamples (for small primes) to these questions.

Abstract:We prove the unbounded denominators conjecture in the theory of noncongruence modular forms for finite index subgroups of SL_2(Z). Our result includes also Mason's generalization of the original conjecture to the setting of vector-valued modular forms, thereby supplying a new path to the congruence property in rational conformal field theory. The proof involves a new arithmetic holonomicity bound of a potential-theoretic flavor, together with Nevanlinna's second main theorem, the congruence subgroup property of SL_2(Z[1/p]), and a close description of the Fuchsian uniformization D(0,1)/\Gamma_N of the Riemann surface C \setminus \mu_N.

Abstract:We consider a finite dimensional strongly G-graded algebra A with self-injective 1-component B, and in our main result we prove that the induction from B to A of a basic support τ-tilting pair of B-modules is a support τ-tilting pair ( M , P ) of A-modules if and only if M is G-invariant. A similar statement holds for the restriction from A to B, so our results may be viewed as Clifford and Maschke type theorems for 2-term silting complexes. We also give applications to semibricks and the associated wide subcategories.

Abstract:Stanley associated with a graph G a symmetric function X_G which reduces to G's chromatic polynomial under a certain specialization of variables. He then proved various theorems generalizing results about the chromatic polynomial, as well as new ones that cannot be interpreted at that level. Unfortunately, X_G does not satisfy a Deletion-Contraction Law which makes it difficult to apply induction. We introduce a symmetric function in noncommuting variables which does have such a law and specializes to X_G when the variables are allowed to commute. This permits us to further generalize some of Stanley's theorems and prove them in a uniform and straightforward manner. Furthermore, we make some progress on the (3+1)-free Conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge.

Abstract:We prove the global triangulation conjecture for families of refined p-adic representations under a mild condition. That is, for a refined family, the associated family of (phi, Gamma)-modules admits a global triangulation on a Zariski open and dense subspace of the base that contains all regular non-critical points. We also determine a large class of points which belongs to the locus of global triangulation. Furthermore, we prove that all the specializations of a refined family are trianguline. In the case of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve, our results provide the key ingredient for showing its properness in a subsequent work.
Stability theorems for multiplicities in graded $S_n$-modules

Abstract:In this paper, we prove several stability theorems for multiplicities of naturally defined representations of symmetric groups. The first such theorem states that if we consider the diagonal action of the symmetric group $S_{m+r}$ on $k$ sets of $m+r$ variables, then the dimension of the invariants of degree $m$ is the same as the dimension of the invariants of degree $m$ for $S_{m}$ acting on $k$ sets of $m$ variables. Building on this stability, the last section looks at the Hilbert series of coinvariants of the polynomial ring in $k$ sets of $m$ variables. We address a conjecture that the Hilbert series, in degrees no more than $m$, can be computed by a truncated power series expression. Using some auxiliary results and manipulations of power series, we show that if this holds for $k$ and $m$, then the truncation gives the correct Hilbert series up to degree $m$ for $k$ sets of $n \geq m$ variables. This shows the validity of the conjecture up to certain degrees. We also provide a new equivalent conjecture regarding Gröbner bases. The second type of stability result is for Weyl modules. We prove that the dimension of the $S_{m+r}$ invariants for a Weyl module ${}_{m+r}F^{\lambda}$ (the Schur-Weyl dual of the $S_{|\lambda|}$ module $V^{\lambda}$) with $\left\vert \lambda \right\vert \leq m$ is of the same dimension as the space of $S_{m}$ invariants for ${}_{m}F^{\lambda}$. Multigraded versions of the first type of result are given, as are multigraded generalizations to non-trivial modules of symmetric groups.

Stable envelopes for slices of the affine Grassmannian

Abstract:The affine Grassmannian associated to a reductive group $\mathbf{G}$ is an affine analogue of the usual flag varieties. It is a rich source of Poisson varieties and their symplectic resolutions. These spaces are examples of conical symplectic resolutions dual to the Nakajima quiver varieties. We study the cohomological stable envelopes of D. Maulik and A. Okounkov [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1211.1287" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1211.1287">arXiv:1211.1287</a>] in this family. We construct an explicit recursive relation for the stable envelopes in the $\mathbf{G} = \mathbf{PSL}_2$ case and compute the first-order correction in the general case. This allows us to write an exact formula for multiplication by a divisor.
