Abstract:We outline a proof of a remarkable conjecture of Labastida-Mari{\~n}o-Ooguri-Vafa about certain new algebraic structures of quantum link invariants and the integrality of infinite family of new topological invariants. Our method is based on the cut-and-join analysis and a special rational ring characterizing the structure of the Chern-Simons partition function.
A proof of the Baum-Connes conjecture for real semisimple Lie groups with coefficients on flag varieties

Abstract:We consider the equivariant K-theory of a real semisimple Lie group which acts on the (complex) flag variety of its complexification group. We construct an assemble map in the framework of KK-theory and then we prove that it is an isomorphism. The prove relies on a careful study of the orbits of the real group action on the flag variety and then piecing together different orbits. This result is a special case of the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients.

On the Boone--Higman Conjecture for groups acting on locally finite trees

Abstract:We develop a method for proving the Boone--Higman Conjecture for groups acting on locally finite trees. As a consequence, we prove the Boone--Higman Conjecture for all Baumslag--Solitar groups and for all free(finite rank)-by-cyclic groups, solving it in two cases that have been raised explicitly by Belk, Bleak, Matucci and Zaremsky. We also illustrate that our method has applications beyond these cases and can for instance be used to prove the Boone--Higman Conjecture for the Leary--Minasyan groups.

Abstract:We consider the equivariant Kasparov category associated to an étale groupoid, and by leveraging its triangulated structure we study its localization at the 'weakly contractible' objects, extending previous work by R. Meyer and R. Nest. We prove the subcategory of weakly contractible objects is complementary to the localizing subcategory of projective objects, which are defined in terms of 'compactly induced' algebras with respect to certain proper subgroupoids related to isotropy. The resulting 'strong' Baum–Connes conjecture implies the classical one, and its formulation clarifies several permanence properties and other functorial statements. We present multiple applications, including consequences for the Universal Coefficient Theorem, a generalized 'going-down' principle, injectivity results for groupoids that are amenable at infinity, the Baum–Connes conjecture for group bundles, and a result about the invariance of K-groups of twisted groupoid -algebras under homotopy of twists.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to modify the orbit method for the Baum-Connes conjecture as developed by Chabert, Echterhoff and Nest in their proof of the Connes-Kasparov conjecture for almost connected groups \cite{MR2010742} in order to deal with linear algebraic groups over local function fields (i.e., non-archimedean local fields of positive characteristic). As a consequence, we verify the Baum-Connes conjecture for certain Levi-decomposable linear algebraic groups over local function fields. One of these is the Jacobi group, which is the semidirect product of the symplectic group and the Heisenberg group.

Abstract:The Tverberg--Vrećica conjecture is a broad generalization of Tverberg's classical theorem. One of its consequences, the central transversal theorem, extends both the centerpoint theorem and the ham sandwich theorem. In this manuscript, we establish complex analogues of these results where the corresponding transversals are complex affine spaces. The proof of the complex Tverberg--Vrećica conjecture for powers of the same prime relies on the non-vanishing of an equivariant Euler class. Additionally, we obtain new Borsuk--Ulam-type theorems on complex Stiefel manifolds, which are interesting on their own. These theorems yield complex analogues of recent extensions of the ham sandwich theorem for mass assignments by Axelrod-Freed and Soberón, and provide a direct proof of the complex central transversal theorem.

Abstract:We prove the unbounded denominators conjecture in the theory of noncongruence modular forms for finite index subgroups of SL_2(Z). Our result includes also Mason's generalization of the original conjecture to the setting of vector-valued modular forms, thereby supplying a new path to the congruence property in rational conformal field theory. The proof involves a new arithmetic holonomicity bound of a potential-theoretic flavor, together with Nevanlinna's second main theorem, the congruence subgroup property of SL_2(Z[1/p]), and a close description of the Fuchsian uniformization D(0,1)/\Gamma_N of the Riemann surface C \setminus \mu_N.

Abstract:By introducing a new point of view in Algebraic Topology relating elliptic curves in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and suitable bordism groups, the congruent number problem is solved showing that the Tunnell's theorem is also sufficient. This could be considered also an indirect proof that the Birch Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture is true.

Abstract:We prove the rational HK-conjecture for a large class of transformation groupoids in the case when the relevant action has torsion-free stabilizers. A revised version of the rational HK-conjecture in the case of (possibly) torsion stabilizers is introduced and proved for a large class of transformation groupoids. In particular, this revised version holds for Scarparo's counterexamples to the original rational HK-conjecture. The key tools used are the Baum-Connes conjecture and a Chern character defined by Raven.

Abstract:We prove the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for mapping tori of automorphisms of virtually torsion-free hyperbolic groups. The proof uses recently developed geometric methods for establishing the Farrell-Jones Conjecture by Bartels-Lück-Reich, as well as the structure theory of mapping tori by Dahmani-Krishna.

Abstract:In previous work, we related homotopy types of finite $(G,n)$-complexes when $G$ has periodic cohomology to projective $\mathbb{Z} G$-modules representing the Swan finiteness obstruction. We use this to determine when $X \vee S^n \simeq Y \vee S^n$ implies $X \simeq Y$ for finite $(G,n)$-complexes $X$ and $Y$, and give lower bounds on the number of homotopically distinct pairs when this fails. The proof involves constructing projective $\mathbb{Z} G$-modules as lifts of locally free modules over orders in products of quaternion algebras, whose existence follows from the Eichler mass formula. In the case $n=2$, difficulties arise which lead to a new approach to finding a counterexample to Wall's D2 problem.

Abstract:We introduce some generalized topological concepts to deal with union-closed families, and show that one can reduce the proof of Frankl conjecture to some families of so-called supratopological spaces. We prove some results on the structure of normalized families, presenting a new way of reducing such a family to a smaller one using dual families. Applying our reduction method, we prove a refinement of a conjecture originally proposed by Poonen. Finally, we show that Frankl Conjecture holds for the class of families obtained from successively applying the reduction process to a power set.

Abstract:In this article we study a coarse version of the $K$-theoretic Farrell--Jones conjecture we call coarse or bounded isomorphism conjecture. Using controlled category theory we are able to translate this conjecture for asymptotically faithful covers into a more familiar form. This allows us to prove the conjecture for box spaces of residually finite groups whose Farrell--Jones assembly map with coefficients is an isomorphism.

Abstract:The relative Novikov conjecture states that the relative higher signatures of manifolds with boundary are invariant under orientation-preserving homotopy equivalences of pairs. The relative Baum–Connes assembly encodes information about the relative higher index of elliptic operators on manifolds with boundary. In this paper, we study the relative Baum–Connes assembly map for any pair of groups and apply it to solve the relative Novikov conjecture when the groups satisfy certain geometric conditions.

Abstract:We use the controlled algebra approach to study the problem that whether the Farrell-Jones conjecture is closed under passage to over-groups of finite indices. Our study shows that this problem is closely related to a general problem in algebraic $K$- and $L$-theories. We use induction theory to study this general problem. This requires an extension of the classical induction theorem for $K$- and $L$- theories of finite groups with coefficients in rings to with twisted coefficients in additive categories. This extension is well-known to experts, but a detailed proof does not exist in the literature. We carry out a detailed proof. This extended induction theorem enables us to make some reductions for the general problem, and therefore for the finite index problem of the Farrell-Jones conjecture.

Abstract:It is shown that a Stallings--Swan theorem holds in a totally disconnected locally compact (= t.d.l.c.) context (cf. Thm. B). More precisely, a compactly generated $\mathcal{CO}$-bounded t.d.l.c. group $G$ of rational discrete cohomological dimension less than or equal to $1$ must be isomorphic to the fundamental group of a finite graph of profinite groups. This result generalises Dunwoody's rational version of the classical Stallings--Swan theorem to t.d.l.c. groups. The proof of Theorem B is based on the fact that a compactly generated unimodular t.d.l.c. group with rational discrete cohomological dimension $1$ has necessarily non-positive Euler--Poincaré characteristic (cf. Thm. G).
