Abstract:Abstract We analyze an algorithmic question about immersion theory: for which $m$, $n$, and $CAT=\textbf{Diff}$ or $\textbf{PL}$ is the question of whether an $m$-dimensional $CAT$-manifold is immersible in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ decidable? We show that PL immersibility is decidable in all cases except for codimension 2, whereas smooth immersibility is decidable in all odd codimensions and undecidable in many even codimensions. As a corollary, we show that the smooth embeddability of an $m$-manifold with boundary in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ is undecidable when $n-m$ is even and $11m \geq 10n+1$.

Abstract:In Finsler geometry, the Minkowski space is a generalization of the Euclidean space. We will brief isometric immersions of Finsler manifolds in Minkowski spaces, in particular, minimal immersions. The volume variation and the mean curvature of Finsler submanifolds in a Minkowski space are given. Some Bernstein type theorems and non-trivial examples for minimal surfaces in Minkowski spaces are shown.

Abstract:We study nearly geodesic immersions in higher rank symmetric spaces of non-compact type, which we define as immersions that satisfy a bound on their fundamental form, generalizing the notion of immersions in hyperbolic space with principal curvature in $(-1,1)$. This notion depends on the choice of a flag manifold embedded in the visual boundary, and immersions satisfying this bound admit a natural domain in this flag manifold that comes with a fibration. As an application we give an explicit fibration of some domains of discontinuity for some Anosov representations. Our method can be applied in particular to some $\Theta$-positive representations for each notion of $\Theta$-positivity.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

Residual finiteness of some automorphism groups of high dimensional manifolds

Abstract:We show that for a smooth, closed 2-connected manifold $M$ of dimension $d \geq 6$, the topological mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is residually finite, in contrast to the situation for the smooth mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Diff}(M)$. Combined with a result of Sullivan, this implies that $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is an arithmetic group. The proof uses embedding calculus, and is of independent interest: we show that the $T_k$-mapping class group, $\pi_0 T_k \mathrm{Diff}(M)$, is residually finite, for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$. The statement on the topological mapping class group is then deduced from the Weiss fibre sequence, convergence of the embedding calculus tower and smoothing theory.

Abstract:Collisionless energy absorption in 1D nanoplasma layer is considered. Straightforward classical calculation of the absorption rate in action-angle variables is presented. In regular regime the result obtained is the same as in [Zaretsky <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>., 2004], but deeper insight is possible now due to the technique used. Chirikov criterion of the chaotic absorption regime is written out. Collisionless energy absorption rate in nanoplasma layer is calculated in stochastic regime.

Abstract:Let $(M,g^{TM})$ be an odd dimensional ($\dim M\geq 3$) connected oriented noncompact complete spin Riemannian manifold. Let $k^{TM}$ be the associated scalar curvature. Let $f:M\to S^{\dim M}(1)$ be a smooth area decreasing map which is locally constant near infinity and of nonzero degree. Suppose $k^{TM}\geq ({\dim M})({\dim M}-1)$ on the support of ${\rm d}f$, we show that $\inf(k^{TM})<0$. This answers a question of Gromov.

Abstract:We study isometric immersions $f: M^n \rightarrow \mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ into hyperbolic space of dimension $n+1$ of a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ on which a compact connected group of intrinsic isometries acts with principal orbits of codimension one. We provide a characterization if either $n \geq 3$ and $M^n$ is compact, or $n \geq 5$ and the connected components of the set where the sectional curvature is constant and equal to $-1$ are bounded.

Abstract:Let $Z$ be a smooth compact $(n+1)$-manifold. We study smooth embeddings and immersions $\beta: M \to Z$ of compact or closed $n$-manifolds $M$ such that the normal line bundle $\nu^\beta$ is trivialized. For a fixed $Z$, we introduce an equivalence relation between such $\beta$'s; it is a crossover between pseudo-isotopies and bordisms. We call this equivalence relation ``{\sf quasitopy}". It comes in two flavors: $\mathsf{IMM}(Z)$ and $\mathsf{EMB}(Z)$, based on immersions and embeddings into $Z$, respectively. We prove that the natural map $\mathsf{A}:\mathsf{EMB}(Z) \to \mathsf{IMM}(Z)$ is injective and admits a right inverse $\mathsf{R}:\mathsf{IMM}(Z) \to \mathsf{EMB}(Z)$, induced by the resolution of self-intersections. As a result, we get a map $$\mathcal B\Sigma:\; \mathsf{IMM}(Z) \big/ \mathsf{A}(\mathsf{EMB}(Z)) \longrightarrow \bigoplus_{k \in [2, n+1]} \mathbf B_{n+1-k}(Z)$$ whose target is a collection of smooth bordism groups of the space $Z$ and which differentiate between immersions and embeddings.

Simplifying generic smooth maps to the 2-sphere and to the plane

Abstract:We study how to construct explicit deformations of generic smooth maps from closed $n$--dimensional manifolds $M$ with $n \geq 4$ to the $2$--sphere $S^2$ and show that every smooth map $M \to S^2$ is homotopic to a $C^\infty$ stable map with at most one cusp point and with only folds of the middle absolute index. Furthermore, if $n$ is even, such a $C^\infty$ stable map can be so constructed that the restriction to the singular point set is a topological embedding. As a corollary, we show that for $n \geq 4$ even, there always exists a $C^\infty$ stable map $M \to \mathbb{R}^2$ with at most one cusp point such that the restriction to the singular point set is a topological embedding. As another corollary, we give a new proof to the existence of an open book structure on odd dimensional manifolds which extends a given one on the boundary, originally due to Quinn. Finally, using the open book structure thus constructed, we show that $k$--connected $n$--dimensional manifolds always admit a fold map into $\mathbb{R}^2$ without folds of absolute indices $i$ with $1 \leq i \leq k$, for $n \geq 7$ odd and $1 \leq k < (n-3)/2$.

Abstract:Given an acyclic map $X\to Y$ of closed manifolds dimension $d$, we study the relationship between the embeddings of $Y$ in $S^{n}$ with those of $X$ in $S^{n}$ when $n-d \ge 3$. The approach taken here is to first solve the Poincaré duality space variant of the problem. We then apply the surgery machine to obtain the corresponding results for manifolds. Thereafter, we focus on the case when $X$ is a smooth homology sphere and deduce results about the homotopy type of the space of block embeddings of $X$ in a sphere.

Abstract:In this paper we study isometric immersions $f:M^n \to {\mathbb {C}^{\prime}}\!P^n$ of an $n$-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold $M^n$ into the $n$-dimensional para-complex projective space ${\mathbb {C}^{\prime}}\!P^n$. We study the immersion $f$ by means of a lift $\mathfrak f$ of $f$ into a quadric hypersurface in ${S^{2n+1}_{n+1}}$. We find the frame equations and compatibility conditions. We specialize these results to dimension $n = 2$ and a definite metric on $M^2$ in isothermal coordinates and consider the special cases of Lagrangian surface immersions and minimal surface immersions. We characterize surface immersions with special properties in terms of primitive harmonicity of the Gauss maps.

Abstract:In this paper we define two regular homotopy invariants c and i for immersions of oriented 3-manifolds into R^5 in a geometric manner. The pair (c(f),i(f)) completely describes the regular homotopy class of the immersion f. The invariant i corresponds to the 3-dimensional obstruction that arises from Hirsch-Smale theory and extends the one defined in [10] for immersions with trivial normal bundle.

Abstract:An immersion $f : {\mathcal D} \rightarrow \mathcal C$ between $\Delta$-complexes is a $\Delta$-map that induces injections from star sets of $\mathcal D$ to star sets of $\mathcal C$. We study immersions between finite-dimensional connected $\Delta$-complexes by replacing the fundamental group of the base space by an appropriate inverse monoid. We show how conjugacy classes of the closed inverse submonoids of this inverse monoid may be used to classify connected immersions into the complex. This extends earlier results of Margolis and Meakin for immersions between graphs and of Meakin and Szakács on immersions into $2$-dimensional $CW$-complexes.

Isometric Euclidean submanifolds with isometric Gauss maps

Abstract:We investigate isometric immersions $f\colon M^n\to\R^{n+2}$, $n\geq 3$, of Riemannian manifolds into Euclidean space with codimension two that admit isometric deformations that preserve the metric of the Gauss map. In precise terms, the preservation of the third fundamental form of the submanifold must be ensured throughout the deformation. For minimal isometric deformations of minimal submanifolds this is always the case. Our main result is of a local nature and states that if $f$ is neither minimal nor reducible, then it is a hypersurface of an isometrically deformable hypersurface $F\colon\tilde{M}^{n+1}\to\R^{n+2}$ such that the deformations of $F$ induce those of $f$. Moreover, for a particular class of such submanifolds, a complete local parametric description is provided.

Abstract:The immersion-analogue of Hadwiger's Conjecture states that every graph $G$ contains an immersion of $K_{\chi(G)}$. This conjecture has been recently strengthened in the following way: every graph $G$ contains a totally odd immersion of $K_{\chi(G)}$. We prove this stronger conjecture for line graphs of constant-multiplicity multigraphs, thus extending a result of Guyer and McDonald.

Abstract:We approach the study of totally real immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant sectional curvature -1. We introduce a notion of first and second fundamental form, we prove that they satisfy a similar version of the classic Gauss-Codazzi equations, and conversely that solutions of Gauss-Codazzi equations are immersion data of some equivariant map. This study has some interesting geometric consequences: 1) it provides a formalism to study immersions of surfaces into SL(2,C) and into the space of geodesics of H^3; 2) it generalizes the classical theory of immersions into non-zero curvature space forms, leading to a model for the transitioning of hypersurfaces among H^n, AdS^n, dS^n and S^n; 3) we prove that a holomorphic family of immersion data corresponds to a holomorphic family of immersions, providing an effective way to construct holomorphic maps into the SO(n,C)-character variety. In particular we will point out a simpler proof of the holomorphicity of the complex landslide; 4) we see how, under certain hypothesis, complex metrics on a surface (i.e. complex bilinear forms of its complexified tangent bundle) of constant curvature -1 correspond to pairs of projective surfaces with the same holonomy. Applying Bers Double Uniformization Theorem to this construction we prove a Uniformization Theorem for complex metrics on a surface.

Abstract:We introduce a new cohomology-theoretic method for classifying generic immersed curves in closed compact surfaces by using Gauss codes. This subsumes a result of J.S. Carter on classifying immersed curves in oriented compact surfaces, and provides a criterion for when an immersion is two-colorable. We note an application to twisted virtual link theory.

Abstract:This paper is about non-holomorphic isometric immersions of Kaehler manifolds into Euclidean space $f\colon M^{2n}\to\R^{2n+p}$, $p\leq n-1$, with low codimension $p\leq 11$. In particular, it addresses a conjecture proposed by J. Yan and F. Zheng. The claim that if the index of complex relative nullity of the submanifold satisfies $\nu_f^c<2n-2p$ at any point, then $f(M)$ can be realized as a holomorphic submanifold of a non-holomorphic Kaehler submanifold of $\R^{2n+p}$ of larger dimension and some large index of complex relative nullity. This conjecture had previously been confirmed by Dajczer-Gromoll for codimension $p=3$, and then by Yan-Zheng for $p=4$. For codimension $p\leq 11$, we already showed that the pointwise structure of the second fundamental form of the submanifold aligns with the anticipated characteristics, assuming the validity of the conjecture. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture until codimension $p=6$, whereas for codimensions $7\leq p\leq 9$ it is also possible that the submanifold exhibits a complex ruled structure with rulings of a specific dimension. Moreover, we prove that the claim of the conjecture holds for codimensions $7\leq p\leq 11$ albeit subject to an additional assumption.
