Abstract:We study optical force and torque on a general particle immersed in generic monochromatic free-space optical field. It is rigorously proved that the optical force can be written as a difference between the surface integrals of the orbital momentum density of light in the presence and in the absence of the particle, while the optical torque is described by the surface integral of total angular momentum (AM) density, viz the sum of the orbital and spin AM densities. It is therefore physically understood that only the orbital part of the optical momentum is responsible for the optical force, whereas the optical torque originates from both the orbital and the spin AM, clarifying in generic case the long-standing controversy about whether the orbital AM can induce a spinning torque.

Abstract:We establish universal relationships between optical force/torque on a general particle and different parts of linear and angular momentum (AM) of generic monochromatic optical field. It is rigorously proved that the optical force comes about by the transfer of orbital (canonical) optical momentum from light to matter, while the other part of optical momentum, known as spin momentum, does not generate optical force on matter but, instead, stays conserved even when the translational invariance is broken by putting particles into the optical fields. On the other hand, based on a generic multipole theory of optical torque, we demonstrate that the optical torque stems from the transfer of the total optical AM, including both orbital and spin AM, clarifying in generic case the long-standing confusion about whether the orbital AM can induce a spinning torque on a general particle in generic optical fields.

Abstract:The spin angular momentum in an elliptically polarized beam of light plays several noteworthy roles in optical traps. It contributes to the linear momentum density in a non-uniform beam, and thus to the radiation pressure exerted on illuminated objects. It can be converted into orbital angular momentum, and thus can exert torques even on optically isotropic objects. Its curl, moreover, contributes to both forces and torques without spin-to-orbit conversion. We demonstrate these effects experimentally by tracking colloidal spheres diffusing in elliptically polarized optical tweezers. Clusters of spheres circulate deterministically about the beam's axis. A single sphere, by contrast, undergoes stochastic Brownian vortex circulation that maps out the optical force field.

Abstract:Global nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of ion temperature gradient (ITG) and collisionless trapped electron mode (CTEM) turbulence find significant spinning up of a plasma in the directions opposite for CTEM and ITG turbulence. The outward momentum convection by the particle flux could be strong enough to overcome the inward momentum pinch and reverse the radial direction of the convective momentum flux. Momentum pinch velocity shows no explicit dependence on background temperature, while it is significantly affected by steepening the background density. Convective momentum fluxes are generally smaller in the CTEM turbulence than the ITG turbulence, while the intrinsic Prandtl number is similar or slightly larger in the CTEM turbulence.

Abstract:Structured light mechanically interacts with matter via optical forces and torques. The optical torque is traditionally calculated via the flux of total angular momentum (AM) into a volume enclosing an object. In [Phys. Rev. A 92, 043843 (2015)] a powerful method was suggested to calculate optical torque separately from the flux of the spin and the orbital parts of optical AM, providing useful physical insight. However, the method predicted a new type of dipolar torque dependent on the gradient of the helicity density of the optical beam, inconsistent with prior torque calculations. In this work we intend to clarify this discrepancy and clear up the confusion. We re-derive, from first principles and with detailed derivations, both the traditional dipolar total torque using total AM flux, and the spin and orbital torque components based on the corresponding AM contributions, ensuring that their sum agrees with the total torque. We also test our derived analytical expressions against numerical integration, with exact agreement. We find that `helicity gradient' torque terms indeed exist in the spin and orbital components separately, but we present corrected prefactors, such that upon adding them, they cancel out, and the `helicity gradient' term vanishes from the total dipolar torque, reconciling literature results. We also derive the analytical expression of the quadrupolar torque, showing that it is proportional to the spin of the EM field gradient, rather than the local EM field spin, as sometimes wrongly assumed in the literature. We provide examples of counter-intuitive situations where the spin of the EM field gradient behaves very differently to the local EM spin. Naively using the local EM field spin leads to wrong predictions of the torque on large particles with strong contributions of quadrupole and higher-order multipoles, especially in a structured incident field.

Abstract:We review basic physics and novel types of optical angular momentum. We start with a theoretical overview of momentum and angular momentum properties of generic optical fields, and discuss methods for their experimental measurements. In particular, we describe the well-known longitudinal (i.e., aligned with the mean momentum) spin and orbital angular momenta in polarized vortex beams. Then, we focus on the transverse (i.e., orthogonal to the mean momentum) spin and orbital angular momenta, which were recently actively discussed in theory and observed in experiments. First, the recently-discovered transverse spin angular momenta appear in various structured fields: evanescent waves, interference fields, and focused beams. We show that there are several kinds of transverse spin angular momentum, which differ strongly in their origins and physical properties. We describe extraordinary features of the transverse optical spins and overview recent experiments. In particular, the helicity-independent transverse spin inherent in edge evanescent waves offers robust spin-direction coupling at optical interfaces (the quantum spin Hall effect of light). Second, we overview the transverse orbital angular momenta of light, which can be both extrinsic and intrinsic. These two types of the transverse orbital angular momentum are produced by spatial shifts of the optical beams (e.g., in the spin Hall effect of light) and their Lorentz boosts, respectively. Our review is underpinned by a unified theory of the angular momentum of light based on the canonical momentum and spin densities, which avoids complications associated with the separation of spin and orbital angular momenta in the Poynting picture. It allows us to construct comprehensive classification of all known optical angular momenta based on their key parameters and main physical properties.

Abstract:We report a transverse optical torque exerted on a conventional isotropic spherical particle in a direction perpendicular to that of the illuminating wave propagation. By using full-wave simulations and deriving an analytical expression of the transverse optical torque for particle of arbitrary size, the origin of this transverse optical torque is traced exclusively to the magnetic part of the spin angular momentum, regardless of the size and composition of the illuminated particle. To our surprise, for a non-magnetic dielectric particle, the transverse optical torque is found to originate mainly from the magnetic response of the particle, even when the particle size is much smaller than the illuminating wavelength. This is contrary to the general intuition that the electric response of a non-magnetic dielectric particle dominates its magnetic response in the mechanical effect of light, especially in the Rayleigh limit.

Abstract:The expression for the total angular momentum carried by a laser optical vortex beam, splits, in the paraxial approximation, into two terms which seem to represent orbital and spin angular momentum respectively. There are, however, two very different competing versions of the formula for the spin angular momentum, one based on the use of the Poynting vector, as in classical electrodynamics, the other related to the canonical expression for the angular momentum which occurs in Quantum Electrodynamic. I analyze the possibility that a sufficiently sensitive optical measurement could decide which of these corresponds to the actual physical angular momentum carried by the beam.

The other yields all the momentum. The angular momentum that is associated with the former part is spin, and the angular momentum that is associated with the latter part is orbital angular momentum. Expressions for the spin and orbital angular momentum are given in terms of the electric vector in reciprocal space. The spin and orbital angular momentum defined this way are used to investigate the angular momentum of nonparaxial beams that are described in a recently published paper [Phys. Rev. A 78, 063831 (2008)]. It is found that the orbital angular momentum depends, apart from an $l$-dependent term, on two global quantities, the polarization represented by a generalized Jones vector and a new characteristic represented by a unit vector $\mathbf{I}$, though the spin depends only on the polarization. The polarization dependence of orbital angular momentum through the impact of $\mathbf{I}$ is obtained and discussed. Some applications of the result obtained here are also made. The fact that the spin originates from the momentum density that has no contribution to the net momentum is used to show that there does not exist the paradox on the spin of circularly polarized plane wave. The polarization dependence of both spin and orbital angular momentum is shown to be the origin of conversion from the spin of a paraxial Laguerre-Gaussian beam into the orbital angular momentum of the focused beam through a high numerical aperture.

Abstract:We present a study of the properties of the transversal "spin angular momentum" and "orbital angular momentum" operators. We show that the "spin angular momentum" operators are generators of spatial translations which depend on helicity and frequency and that the "orbital angular momentum" operators generate transformations which are a sequence of this kind of translations and rotations. We give some examples of the use of these operators in light matter interaction problems. Their relationship with the helicity operator allows to involve the electromagnetic duality symmetry in the analysis. We also find that simultaneous eigenstates of the three "spin" operators and parity define a type of standing modes which has been recently singled out for the interaction of light with chiral molecules. With respect to the relationship between "spin angular momentum", polarization, and total angular momentum, we show that, except for the case of a single plane wave, the total angular momentum of the field is decoupled from its vectorial degrees of freedom even in the regime where the paraxial approximation holds. Finally, we point out a relationship between the three "spin" operators and the spatial part of the Pauli-Lubanski four vector.

Abstract:We investigate the decomposition of the electromagnetic Poynting momentum density in three-dimensional random monochromatic fields into orbital and spin parts, using analytical and numerical methods. In sharp contrast with the paraxial case, the orbital and spin momenta in isotropic random fields are found to be identically distributed in magnitude, increasing the discrepancy between the Poynting and orbital pictures of energy flow. Spatial correlation functions reveal differences in the generic organization of the optical momenta in complex natural light fields, with the orbital current typically forming broad channels of unidirectional flow, and the spin current manifesting larger vorticity and changing direction over subwavelength distances. These results are extended to random fields with pure helicity, in relation to the inclusion of electric-magnetic democracy in the definition of optical momenta.

Abstract:Optical forces and torques offer the route towards full degree-of-freedom manipulation of matter. Exploiting structured light has led to the discovery of gradient and curl forces, and nontrivial optomechanical manifestations, such as negative and lateral optical forces. Here, we uncover the existence of two fundamental torque components, which originate from the reactive helicity gradient and momentum curl of light, and which represent the rotational analogues to the gradient and curl forces, respectively. Based on the two components, we introduce and demonstrate the concept of lateral optical torques, which act transversely to the spin of illumination. The orbital angular momentum of vortex beams is shown to couple to the curl torque, promising a path to extreme torque enhancement or achieving negative optical torques. These results highlight the intersection between the areas of structured light, Mie-tronics and rotational optomechanics, even inspiring new paths of manipulation in acoustics and hydrodynamics.

Abstract:When light is passing through a rotating medium the optical polarisation is rotated. Recently it has been reasoned that this rotation applies also to the transmitted image (Padgett et al. 2006). We examine these two phenomena by extending an analysis of Player (1976) to general electromagnetic fields. We find that in this more general case the wave equation inside the rotating medium has to be amended by a term which is connected to the orbital angular momentum of the light. We show that optical spin and orbital angular momentum account respectively for the rotation of the polarisation and the rotation of the transmitted image.

Abstract:We review and re-examine the description and separation of the spin and orbital angular momenta (AM) of an electromagnetic field in free space. While the spin and orbital AM of light are not separately meaningful physical quantities in orthodox quantum mechanics or classical field theory, these quantities are routinely measured and used for applications in optics. A meaningful quantum description of the spin and orbital AM of light was recently provided by several authors, which describes separately conserved and measurable integral values of these quantities. However, the electromagnetic field theory still lacks corresponding locally conserved spin and orbital AM currents. In this paper, we construct these missing spin and orbital AM densities and fluxes that satisfy the proper continuity equations. We show that these are physically measurable and conserved quantities. These are, however, not Lorentz-covariant, so only make sense in the single laboratory reference frame of the measurement probe. The fluxes we derive improve the canonical (nonconserved) spin and orbital AM fluxes, and include a ‘spin–orbit’ term that describes the spin–orbit interaction effects observed in nonparaxial optical fields. We also consider both standard and dual-symmetric versions of the electromagnetic field theory. Applying the general theory to nonparaxial optical vortex beams validates our results and allows us to discriminate between earlier approaches to the problem. Our treatment yields the complete and consistent description of the spin and orbital AM of free Maxwell fields in both quantum-mechanical and field-theory approaches.

Generating optical angular momentum through wavefront curvature

Abstract:Recent developments in the understanding of optical angular momentum have resulted in many demonstrations of unusual optical phenomena, such as optical beams with orbital angular momentum and transverse spinning light. Here we detail novel contributions to spin and orbital angular momentum generated by the gradient of wavefront curvature that becomes relevant in strongly focused beams of light. While circularly polarized beams are shown to develop helicity-dependent transverse spin, a linearly polarized Gaussian beam produces longitudinal spin and orbital angular momenta in the focal region, even if lacking both of these before focusing. Analytical treatment of a nonparaxial electromagnetic field, validated with vectorial diffraction modelling, shows that the terms related to higher orders of a paraxial parameter are responsible for the appearance of non-trivial angular momenta. The obtained dependences relate these quantities to the gradient of the wavefront curvature, showing how it can be used as a novel degree of freedom for applications in optical manipulation and light-matter interactions at subwavelength scales, enabling angular momentum transfer even from a simple Gaussian beam with linear polarization.
