Abstract:The concept of Digital Twin (DT) is increasingly applied to systems on different levels of abstraction across domains, to support monitoring, analysis, diagnosis, decision making and automated control. Whilst the interest in applying DT is growing, the definition of DT is unclear, neither is there a clear pathway to develop DT to fully realise its capacities. In this paper, we revise the concept of DT and its categorisation. We propose a DT maturity matrix, based on which we propose a model-based DT development methodology. We also discuss how model-based tools can be used to support the methodology and present our own supporting tool. We report our preliminary findings with a discussion on a case study, in which we use our proposed methodology and our supporting tool to develop an extensible DT platform for the assurance of Electrical and Electronics systems of space launch vehicles.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop an extensible model - based Digital Twin (DT) framework to support the reliability assurance of aerospace launch vehicle electrical and electronic systems (E/E Systems). Specifically, the paper addresses the following issues: 1. **Unclear DT Concept**: Currently, the concept definition of digital twin is vague and lacks a clear development path, making it difficult to fully realize its potential. 2. **Requirement for Precise Modeling of Complex Systems**: With the increasing complexity of missions such as deep - space exploration and reusable rockets, the ground system integration and flight autonomous control stages place higher requirements on the precise modeling of rockets and launch vehicles. 3. **Challenge of Large - Scale Data Management**: The scale and complexity of spacecraft design make it difficult to manage a large amount of test and flight data, and these data - driven methods require effective tools and methods to handle. 4. **Insufficiency of Existing Tools and Technologies**: Existing tools and technologies are not sufficient to support the development of DT in the aerospace engineering field, especially for complex aerospace launch vehicles. To solve these problems, the paper proposes the following solutions: - **DT Maturity Matrix**: A matrix for measuring DT maturity is proposed, and the characteristics of different maturity levels are clearly defined. - **DEVOTION Methodology**: A model - based DT development methodology (DEVOTION) is proposed, through which a DT platform of any maturity level can be systematically developed. - **DTME Tool Support**: A tool environment named DTME (Digital Twin Management Environment) is developed to support the application of the DEVOTION methodology in a highly automated manner. - **Case Study**: Through a specific case study, it shows how to apply DEVOTION and DTME to develop a digital twin platform for aerospace launch vehicle E/E systems to ensure its reliability. ### Main Contributions of the Paper 1. **Clarifying and Consolidating the DT Definition**: The DT maturity matrix is introduced, providing clear criteria for analyzing DT maturity. 2. **Systematic Model - Based DT Engineering Methodology**: The DEVOTION methodology is proposed to guide developers in developing DT platforms of any maturity level. 3. **Tool Support**: The design and development of the DTME tool are discussed. This tool is highly automated and can support the implementation of the DEVOTION methodology. 4. **Preliminary Results**: The preliminary results of applying DEVOTION and DTME to the reliability assurance of aerospace launch vehicle E/E systems are reported. Through these contributions, the paper aims to promote the application and development of DT technology in the aerospace field, especially to provide new solutions in the design, monitoring, and maintenance of complex systems.
