Abstract:Topology in condensed matter physics is typically associated with a bulk energy gap. However, recent research has shifted focus to topological phases without a bulk energy gap, exhibiting nontrivial gapless topological behaviors. In this letter, we explore a cluster Ising chain with long-range antiferromagnetic interactions that decay as a power law with the distance. Using complementary numerical and analytical techniques, we demonstrate that long-range interactions can unambiguously induce an algebraic topological phase and a topological Gaussian universality, both of which exhibit nontrivial gapless topological behaviors. Our study not only provides a platform to investigate the fundamental physics of quantum many-body systems but also offers a novel route toward searching for gapless topological phases in realistic quantum simulators.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the issue of exploring the impact of long-range interactions on gapless topological phases, particularly whether these interactions can induce new topological phases or phase transitions with non-trivial gapless topological behavior. Specifically, the authors study the long-range antiferromagnetic interactions in a 1-dimensional cluster Ising chain model, using numerical simulations and theoretical analysis to explore the ground state properties and phase diagram of the system under different strengths of long-range interactions. The main objectives of the paper include: 1. **Exploring the impact of long-range interactions on gapless topological phases**: Understanding how long-range interactions affect the stability and properties of gapless topological phases. 2. **Discovering new topological phases**: Identifying new topological phases induced by long-range interactions, such as the algebraic SPT phase. 3. **Studying the universality classes of phase transitions**: Investigating the changes in universality classes during the phase transition from the antiferromagnetic phase to the topological phase, particularly the transition from the topological Ising universality class to the topological Gaussian universality class. 4. **Providing explanations for the physical mechanisms**: Offering explanations for the physical mechanisms leading to new topological phases and phase transitions due to long-range interactions through numerical results and theoretical analysis. Through these studies, the authors hope to provide a new platform for understanding fundamental physical phenomena in quantum many-body systems and to offer new avenues for finding gapless topological phases in real quantum simulators.
