Abstract:We collect some open problems about minimal presentations of numerical semigroups and, more generally, about defining ideals and free resolutions of their semigroup rings and associated graded rings. We emphasize both long-standing problems and more recent questions and developments.

Abstract:We consider the classical problem of determining the largest possible cardinality of a minimal presentation of a numerical monoid with given embedding dimension and multiplicity. Very few values of this cardinality are known. In addressing this problem, we apply tools from Hilbert functions and free resolutions of artinian standard graded algebras. This approach allows us to solve the problem in many cases and, at the same time, identify subtle difficulties in the remaining cases. As a by-product of our analysis, we deduce results for the corresponding problem for the type of a numerical monoid.

Semi-covariety of numerical semigroups

Abstract:The main aim of this work is to introduce and justify the study of semi-covarities. A {\it semi-covariety} is a non-empty family $\mathcal{F}$ of numerical semigroups such that it is closed under finite intersections, has a minimum, $\min(\mathcal{F}),$ and if $S\in \mathcal{F}$ being $S\neq \min(\mathcal{F})$, then there is $x\in S$ such that $S\backslash \{x\}\in \mathcal{F}$. As examples, we will study the semi-covariety formed by all the numerical semigroups containing a fixed numerical semigroup, and the semi-covariety composed by all the numerical semigroups of coated odd elements and fixed Frobenius number.

We also studied the nealy Gorenstein property of associated graded ring of simplicial affine semigroups. Moreover, in case of gluing of numerical semigroups, we answer the question posed by Herzog-Hibi-Stamate.

Abstract:Each numerical semigroup $S$ with smallest positive element $m$ corresponds to an integer point in a polyhedral cone $C_m$, known as the Kunz cone. The faces of $C_m$ form a stratification of numerical semigroups that has been shown to respect a number of algebraic properties of $S$, including the combinatorial structure of the minimal free resolution of the defining toric ideal $I_S$. In this work, we prove that the structure of the infinite free resolution of the ground field $\Bbbk$ over the semigroup algebra $\Bbbk[S]$ also respects this stratification, yielding a new combinatorial approach to classifying homological properties like Golodness and rationality of the poincare series in this setting. Additionally, we give a complete classification of such resolutions in the special case $m = 4$, and demonstrate that the associated graded algebras do not generally respect the same stratification.

The isomorphism problem for ideal class monoids of numerical semigroups

Abstract:From any poset isomorphic to the poset of gaps of a numerical semigroup $S$ with the order induced by $S$, one can recover $S$. As an application, we prove that two different numerical semigroups cannot have isomorphic posets (with respect to set inclusion) of ideals whose minimum is zero. We also show that given two numerical semigroups $S$ and $T$, if their ideal class monoids are isomorphic, then $S$ must be equal to $T$.

Abstract:Let $H$ be a monoid (written multiplicatively). We call $H$ Archimedean if, for all $a, b \in H$ such that $b$ is a non-unit, there is an integer $k \ge 1$ with $b^k \in HaH$; strongly Archimedean if, for each $a \in H$, there is an integer $k \ge 1$ such that $HaH$ contains any product of any $k$ non-units of $H$; and duo if $aH = Ha$ for all $a \in H$. We prove that the ideals of two strongly Archimedean, cancellative, duo monoids make up isomorphic semigroups under the induced operation of setwise multiplication if and only if the monoids themselves are isomorphic up to units; and the same holds upon restriction to finitely generated ideals in Archimedean, cancellative, duo monoids. Then we use the previous results to tackle a new case of a problem of Tamura and Shafer from the late 1960s.

Abstract:We consider semigroup algorithmic problems in finitely generated metabelian groups. Our paper focuses on three decision problems introduced by Choffrut and Karhum\"{a}ki (2005): the Identity Problem (does a semigroup contain a neutral element?), the Group Problem (is a semigroup a group?) and the Inverse Problem (does a semigroup contain the inverse of a generator?). We show that all three problems are decidable for finitely generated sub-semigroups of finitely generated metabelian groups. In particular, we establish a correspondence between polynomial semirings and sub-semigroups of metabelian groups using an interaction of graph theory, convex polytopes, algebraic geometry and number theory. Since the Semigroup Membership problem (does a semigroup contain a given element?) is known to be undecidable in finitely generated metabelian groups, our result completes the decidability characterization of semigroup algorithmic problems in metabelian groups.
On a conjecture of Moreno-Frías and Rosales for numerical semigroups

Abstract:The present paper addresses a semimodule counting conjecture of Moreno-Frías and Rosales for numerical semigroups. Applying Pfister and Steenbrink's Theory for punctual Hilbert schemes of curve singularities, we show that this conjecture is true for any numerical semigroup.

Abstract:Numerical semigroups with multiplicity $m$ are parameterized by integer points in a polyhedral cone $C_m$, according to Kunz. For the toric ideal of any such semigroup, the main result here constructs a free resolution whose overall structure is identical for all semigroups parametrized by the relative interior of a fixed face of $C_m$. The matrix entries of this resolution are monomials whose exponents are parametrized by the coordinates of the corresponding point in $C_m$, and minimality of the resolution is achieved when the semigroup is maximal embedding dimension, which is the case parametrized by the interior of $C_m$ itself.

On nearly Gorenstein affine semigroups

Abstract:We describe the canonical module of a simplicial affine semigroup ring $\mathbb{K}[S]$ and its trace ideal. As a consequence, we characterize when $\mathbb{K}[S]$ is nearly Gorenstein in terms of arithmetic properties of the semigroup $S$. Then, we find some bounds for the Cohen-Macaulay type of $\mathbb{K}[S]$ when it is nearly Gorenstein. In particular, if it has codimension at most three, we prove that the Cohen-Macaulay type is at most three and this bound is sharp.

On semisubtractive ideals of semirings

Abstract:Our aim in this paper is to explore semisubtractive ideals of semirings. We prove that they form a complete modular lattice. We introduce Golan closures and prove some of their basic properties. We explore the relations between $Q$-ideals and semisubtractive ideals of semirings, and also study them in $s$-local semirings. We introduce two subclasses of semisubtractive ideals: $s$-strongly irreducible and $s$-irreducible, and provide various representation theorems. By endowing a topology on the set of semisubtractive ideals, we prove that the space is $T_0$, sober, connected, and quasi-compact. We also briefly study continuous maps between semisubtractive spaces. We construct $s$-congruences and prove a bijection between these congruences and semisubtractive ideals.

Abstract:We describe the typical homological properties of monomial ideals defined by random generating sets. We show that, under mild assumptions, random monomial ideals (RMI's) will almost always have resolutions of maximal length; that is, the projective dimension will almost always be $n$, where $n$ is the number of variables in the polynomial ring. We give a rigorous proof that Cohen-Macaulayness is a "rare" property. We characterize when an RMI is generic/strongly generic, and when it "is Scarf"---in other words, when the algebraic Scarf complex of $M\subset S=k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ gives a minimal free resolution of $S/M$. As a result we see that, outside of a very specific ratio of model parameters, RMI's are Scarf only when they are generic. We end with a discussion of the average magnitude of Betti numbers.

Generalized Numerical semigroups up to isomorphism

Abstract:A generalized numerical semigroup is a submonoid $S$ of $\mathbb{N}^d$ with finite complement in it. We characterize isomorphisms between these monoids in terms of permutation of coordinates. Considering the equivalence relation that identifies the monoids obtained by the action of a permutation and establishing a criterion to select a representative from each equivalence class, we define some procedures for generating the set of all generalized numerical semigroups of given genus up to isomorphism. Finally, we present computational data and explore properties related to the number of generalized numerical semigroups of a given genus up to isomorphism.

Abstract:The investigation and classification of non-unique factorization phenomena has attracted some interest in recent literature. For finitely generated monoids, S.T. Chapman and P.A. García-Sánchez, together with several co-authors, derived a method to calculate the catenary and tame degree from the monoid of relations. Then, in [1], the algebraic structure of this approach was investigated and the restriction to finitely generated monoids was removed. We now extend these ideas further to the monotone catenary degree and then apply all these results to the explicit computation of arithmetical invariants of semigroup rings. [1] A. Abstract:One-parameter strongly continuous semigroups of linear bounded operators on Banach spaces (also known as $C_0$-semigroups) are a fundamental operator-theoretic tool used in the study of linear and non-linear evolution PDEs arising in physics, probability, control theory and other areas of science and technology, including quantum theory, transportation problems and finance. Since 2021 the annual online conference on one-parameter semigroups of operators (OPSO) offers an opportunity for researchers worldwide to discuss the current state of the art and exchange knowledge. On every OPSO conference open problems are proposed, collected and discussed, some of them are found to be solved and hence get crossed out from the list. In this paper we provide a collection of open problems of semigroup theory that were proposed by participants of OPSO 2021--2024 conferences and have not been solved, yet. For each problem some comments on the relevance and and history of the problem are provided.

Abstract:Finite commutative semigroups $S$ (akin to the better known group case) have a neat structure as well. Apart from a trimmed proof of the general framework, the structural details of many concrete f.c. semigroups $S$ are unraveled. They come in two types. First, the subtle multiplicative semigroups $(Z_n,\bullet)$ (as opposed to their bland siblings $(Z_n,+)$). Second, semigroups defined by generators and relations. Altogether six open questions stimulate further research.
