Abstract:We examine the electronic structure of recently fabricated in-plane heterojunctions of zigzag graphene nanoribbons embedded in hexagonal boron nitride. We focus on hitherto unexplored interface configurations in which both edges of the nanoribbon are bonded to the same chemical species, either boron or nitrogen atoms. Using ab initio and mean-field Hubbard model calculations, we reveal the emergence of one-dimensional magnetic conducting channels at these interfaces. These channels originate from the energy shift of the magnetic interface states that is induced by charge transfer between the nanoribbon and hexagonal boron nitride. We further address the response of these heterojunctions to external electric and magnetic fields, demonstrating the tunability of energy and spin splittings in the electronic structure. Our findings establish that zigzag graphene nanoribbon/hexagonal boron nitride heterojunctions are a suitable platform for exploring and engineering spin transport in the atomically thin limit, with potential applications in integrated spintronic devices

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore and understand the electronic structure and magnetic transport properties in the lateral heterojunctions formed by zigzag - graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR) embedded in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) when the two edges of the nanoribbons terminate at the same chemical species (boron or nitrogen atoms). Specifically, the author focuses on the not - yet - fully - studied properties of these symmetrically configured interfaces. ### Main Problem Summary: 1. **Impact of Symmetric Interface Configuration**: Previous studies have mainly focused on asymmetrically configured interfaces (i.e., one edge terminates at a boron atom and the other at a nitrogen atom), while this paper explores what changes will occur in the electronic structure and magnetic transport properties of these heterojunctions when both edges of the nanoribbons terminate at the same chemical species. 2. **Formation of One - Dimensional Magnetic Conduction Channels**: Through first - principles calculations and mean - field Hubbard model calculations, the author reveals that in these symmetrically configured heterojunctions, due to the energy shift of interface states caused by charge transfer, new one - dimensional magnetic conduction channels are formed. These channels make the originally insulating material exhibit metallic behavior. 3. **Influence of External Electric and Magnetic Fields**: The study also explores the responses of these heterojunctions under applied electric and magnetic fields, demonstrating the possibility of regulating behavior through external fields, especially in terms of energy, spin, and momentum splitting. 4. **Application Prospects**: Finally, the author points out that this zigzag - graphene nanoribbon/hexagonal boron nitride heterojunction is an ideal platform for exploring and manipulating spin transport, with potential application value, especially in the fields of spintronics and related quantum technologies. ### Key Conclusions: - In the symmetrically configured ZGNR/hBN heterojunctions, width - independent one - dimensional magnetic conduction channels are formed, which originate from the monopole charge transfer at the interface and the subsequent energy shift of the edge carbon atom states. - External electric and magnetic fields can adjust the electronic structure of these heterojunctions, providing a certain degree of tunability in energy, spin, and momentum splitting. - These heterojunctions provide a new platform for exploring and manipulating spin transport, with potential application prospects, especially in the fields of spintronics and quantum technologies. Through the answers to these questions, the author provides an important theoretical basis and technical guidance for future research and applications.
