What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper discusses the psychological antecedents of team autonomy in agile development methods (such as Scrum) in the software industry. The main research question is to understand the key psychological factors that impact the autonomy of agile teams, leading to the success of agile projects. The author collected data from 137 professionals with experience in Scrum teams from software companies in the United States through an online survey, and used multiple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship between leadership style, organizational structure, human resource practices, and customer involvement with team autonomy. The paper suggests that team autonomy is crucial for innovating products and delivering on time under uncertainty and market competition pressure. The research is based on the self-determination theory, which suggests that the shift from external to internal locus of control can motivate teams to actively pursue common goals and feel more responsible for project outcomes. In addition, teams with high autonomy are more inclined to continuous improvement, reduce external dependencies, and improve responsiveness. The paper proposes four hypotheses, namely that there is no significant relationship between leadership style, customer involvement, organizational structure, and human resource practices and team autonomy. However, existing research suggests that these factors may actually have a positive impact on team autonomy. By analyzing these factors, the paper constructs an empirical model of psychological factors and team autonomy to help software companies design incentive plans and enhance team performance and productivity.
