Abstract:We prove a theorem about the derivation algebra of the tensor product of two algebras. As an application, we determine the derivation algebra of the fixed point algebra of the tensor product of two algebras, with respect to the tensor product of two finite order automorphisms of the involved algebras. These results generalize some well-know theorems in the literature.

Abstract:In the paper, we consider the class of so-called endo-commutative algebras. From the identity imposed to specify this class, one can easily see that the product in this class preserves the square of elements. We give a complete classification of this class, up to isomorphism, over any basic field in dimension two. This elementary and self-contained exposition uses the recent result of one of the authors on description of the category of all $2$-dimensional algebras over any basic field.

Abstract:We endow twisted tensor products with a natural notion of counit and comultiplication, and we provide sufficient and necessary conditions making the twisted tensor product a counital coassociative coalgebra. We then characterize when the twisted tensor product of bialgebras is a bialgebra, and when the twisted tensor product of Frobenius algebras is a Frobenius algebra. Our methods are purely diagrammatic, so these results hold for (braided) monoidal categories. As an application, we recover that some quantum complete intersections are Frobenius algebras, and we construct families of noncommutative symmetric Frobenius algebras. Along the way, we also characterize when twisted tensor products of separable algebras are separable, and we prove that twisted tensor products of special Frobenius algebras are special Frobenius.

This extends previous work by Carlson and Kovács for the commutative case and answers a question of them in some cases.

Homotopy Invariants of Braided Commutative Algebras and the Deligne Conjecture for Finite Tensor Categories

Abstract:It is easy to find algebras $\mathbb{T}\in\mathcal{C}$ in a finite tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ that naturally come with a lift to a braided commutative algebra $\mathsf{T}\in Z(\mathcal{C})$ in the Drinfeld center of $\mathcal{C}$. In fact, any finite tensor category has at least two such algebras, namely the monoidal unit $I$ and the canonical end $\int_{X\in\mathcal{C}} X\otimes X^\vee$. Using the theory of braided operads, we prove that for any such algebra $\mathbb{T}$ the homotopy invariants, i.e. the derived morphism space from $I$ to $\mathbb{T}$, naturally come with the structure of a differential graded $E_2$-algebra. This way, we obtain a rich source of differential graded $E_2$-algebras in the homological algebra of finite tensor categories. We use this result to prove that Deligne's $E_2$-structure on the Hochschild cochain complex of a finite tensor category is induced by the canonical end, its multiplication and its non-crossing half braiding. With this new and more explicit description of Deligne's $E_2$-structure, we can lift the Farinati-Solotar bracket on the Ext algebra of a finite tensor category to an $E_2$-structure at cochain level. Moreover, we prove that, for a unimodular pivotal finite tensor category, the inclusion of the Ext algebra into the Hochschild cochains is a monomorphism of framed $E_2$-algebras, thereby refining a result of Menichi.

Abstract:We develop some foundations of commutative algebra, with a view towards algebraic geometry, in symmetric tensor categories. Most results establish analogues of classical theorems, in tensor categories which admit a tensor functor to some tensor category verifying specific conditions. This is in line with the current program which aims to describe tensor categories by their tensor functors to incompressible categories. We place particular emphasis on the notion of observable subgroups of affine group schemes in tensor categories, which in particular leads to some further insight into observability for classical affine group schemes.

Abstract:We prove that, as Gerstenhaber algebras, the Hochschild cohomology ring of the tensor product of two algebras is isomorphic to the tensor product of the respective Hochschild cohomology rings of these two algebras, when at least one of them is finite dimensional. In case of finite dimensional symmetric algebras, this isomorphism is an isomorphism of Batalin–Vilkovisky algebras. As an application, we explain by examples how to compute the Batalin–Vilkovisky structure, in particular, the Gerstenhaber Lie bracket, over the Hochschild cohomology ring of the group algebra of a finite abelian group.

Abstract:Artin, Tate and Van den Bergh initiated the field of noncommutative projective algebraic geometry by fruitfully studying geometric data associated to noncommutative graded algebras. More specifically, given a field $\mathbb K$ and a graded $\mathbb K$-algebra $A$, they defined an inverse system of projective schemes $\Upsilon_A = \{{\Upsilon_d(A)}\}$. This system affords an algebra, $\mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$, built out of global sections, and a $\mathbb K$-algebra morphism $\tau: A \to \mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$. We study and extend this construction. We define, for any natural number $n$, a category ${\tt PSys}^n$ of projective systems of schemes and a contravariant functor $\mathbf B$ from ${\tt PSys}^n$ to the category of associative $\mathbb K$-algebras. We realize the schemes ${\Upsilon_d(A)}$ as ${\rm Proj \ } {\mathbf U}_d(A)$, where ${\mathbf U}_d$ is a functor from associative algebras to commutative algebras. We characterize when the morphism $\tau: A \to \mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$ is injective or surjective in terms of local cohomology modules of the ${\mathbf U}_d(A)$. Motivated by work of Walton, when $\Upsilon_A$ consists of well-behaved schemes, we prove a geometric result that computes the Hilbert series of $\mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$. We provide many detailed examples that illustrate our results. For example, we prove that for some non-AS-regular algebras constructed as twisted tensor products of polynomial rings, $\tau$ is surjective or an isomorphism.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to study the existence of Deligne's tensor product of abelian categories by comparing it with the well-known ten- sor product of finitely cocomplete categories. The main result states that the former exists precisely when the latter is an abelian category, and moreover in this case both tensor products coincide. An example of two abelian categories whose Deligne tensor product does not exist is given.

Abstract:We construct an explicit abelian model for the operation of tensor $2$-product of $2$-representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}^{+}$, specifically the product of a simple $2$-representation $\mathcal{L}(1)$ with a given abelian $2$-representation $\mathcal{V}$ taken from the $2$-category of algebras. We study the case $\mathcal{V}=\mathcal{L}(1)$ in detail, and we show that the $2$-product in this case recovers the expected structure. Our construction partially verifies a conjecture of Rouquier from 2008.

A monadicity theorem for higher algebraic structures

Abstract:We develop a theory of Eilenberg-Moore objects in any $(\infty,2)$-category and extend Barr-Beck's monadicity theorem to any $(\infty,2)$-category that admits Eilenberg-Moore objects. We apply this result to various $(\infty,2)$-categories of higher algebraic structures to obtain a monadicity theorem for enriched $\infty$-categories, $\infty$-operads and higher Segal objects. Analyzing Eilenberg-Moore objects in the $(\infty,2)$-categories of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories and lax (oplax) symmetric monoidal functors we extend classical results about lax (oplax) symmetric monoidal monads to the $\infty$-categorical world: we construct two tensor products for algebras over lax (oplax) symmetric monoidal monads, respectively: the first one extends the relative tensor product for modules over an $\mathbb{E}_{\mathrm{k}}$-algebra for $2 \leq \mathrm{k} \leq \infty$, the second one generalizes the object-wise tensor product for $\mathbb{E}_{\mathrm{k}}$-algebras in any $\mathbb{E}_{\mathrm{k}}$-monoidal $\infty$-category. As an application we construct a tensor product for algebras over any Hopf $\infty$-operad.

The manuscript on hand provides more context to the results presented in the aforementioned work, identifies new classes of Gorenstein algebras, and explores their behaviour under standard operations like taking tensor products and tilting.

Abstract:We show that the canonical equivalences of categories between 2-dimensional (unoriented) topological quantum field theories valued in a symmetric monoidal category and (extended) commutative Frobenius algebras in that symmetric monoidal category are symmetric monoidal equivalences. As an application, we recover that the invariant of 2-dimensional manifolds given by the product of (extended) commutative Frobenius algebras in a symmetric tensor category is the multiplication of the invariants given by each of the algebras.

Deligne tensor products of categories of modules for vertex operator algebras

Abstract:We show that if $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ are locally finite abelian categories of modules for vertex operator algebras $U$ and $V$, respectively, then the Deligne tensor product of $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ can be realized as a certain category $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ of modules for the tensor product vertex operator algebra $U\otimes V$. We also show that if $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ admit the braided tensor category structure of Huang-Lepowsky-Zhang, then $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ does as well under mild additional conditions, and that this braided tensor structure is equivalent to the natural braided tensor structure on a Deligne tensor product category. These results hold in particular when $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ are the categories of $C_1$-cofinite $U$- and $V$-modules, if these categories are closed under contragredients, in which case we show that $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ is the category of $C_1$-cofinite $U\otimes V$-modules. If $U$ and $V$ are $\mathbb{N}$-graded and $C_2$-cofinite, then we may take $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ to be the categories of all grading-restricted generalized $U$- and $V$-modules, respectively. Thus as an application, if the tensor categories of all modules for two $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebras are rigid, then so is the tensor category of all modules for the tensor product vertex operator algebra. We use this to prove that the representation categories of the even subalgebras of the symplectic fermion vertex operator superalgebras are non-semisimple modular tensor categories.

Abstract:In the present paper we extend and improve the results of \cite{bl, br} for the tensor square of Lie algebras. More precisely, for any Lie algebra $L$ with $L/L^2$ of finite dimension, we prove $L\otimes L\cong L\square L\oplus L\wedge L$ and $Z^{\wedge}(L)\cap L^2=Z^{\otimes}(L)$. Moreover, we show that $L\wedge L$ is isomorphic to derived subalgebra of a cover of $L$, and finally we give a free presentation for it.

On the projective dimension of tensor products of modules

Abstract:In this paper we consider a question of Roger Wiegand, which is about tensor products of finitely generated modules that have finite projective dimension over commutative Noetherian rings. We construct modules of infinite projective dimension (and of infinite Gorenstein dimension) whose tensor products have finite projective dimension. Furthermore we determine nontrivial conditions under which such examples cannot occur. For example we prove that, if the tensor product of two nonzero modules, at least one of which is totally reflexive (or equivalently Gorenstein-projective), has finite projective dimension, then both modules in question have finite projective dimension.
