Abstract:We prove that, for any pure morphic word $w$, if the frequencies of all letters in $w$ exist, then the frequencies of all factors in $w$ exist as well. This result answers a question of Saari in his doctoral thesis.

Abstract:An interesting phenomenon in combinatorics on words is when every recurrent word satisfying some avoidance constraints has the same factor set as a morphic word. An early example is the Hall-Thue word, fixed point of the morphism $\texttt{0}\to\texttt{012}$, $\texttt{1}\to\texttt{02}$, $\texttt{2}\to\texttt{1}$, which is essentially the only ternary word avoiding squares and the words \texttt{010} and \texttt{212}. We provide some examples of this phenomenon from various contexts.

Abstract:The morphological synergetic model has yet to be fully tested in typical analytic languages. The quantification of Chinese morphology and its relationship with word frequency can help construct and test the morphological synergetic model in Chinese. Based on the Lancaster Corpus of Mandarin Chinese, this study proposes a quantitative method for the structural complexity of Chinese words by Kolmogorov complexity, further examining the interrelation between the structural complexity of words (SCW) and word frequency. Results show that the SCW of words formed by combining morphemes in multiple assembling ways is generally higher than that in a single assembling way among the seven structural types of Chinese words, but derivational affixes impact SCW significantly. The higher SCW, the lower the word frequency. Given the combined effects of morpheme properties, y=Ax(-b)e(-cx) is more suitable to describe the inverse relationship than y=Ax(-b). Additionally, the higher the word frequency, the lower SCW. The delayed negative feedback causes small-scale fluctuations, but y=Ax(-b)e(-cx) can effectively describe the overall interactions between the two. From the internal mechanism, word frequency changes first, thus causing changes in word structure; In turn, for communication effectiveness, the structure of words becomes more complex to carry more meaning, thus influencing word frequency.

Abstract:In this paper, we compare the word length motif in modern spoken Chinese and written Chinese, and attempt to make clear how it evolves in written Chinese. The synchronic studies show that the rank-frequency distributions can be fitted with power law function y=ax(b), and the length distributions can be fitted with the Hyper-Pascal function. As for the diachronic studies, evolutionary regularities are found. On the one hand, we found an increasing trend of parameter a and a decreasing trend of parameter b in the rank-frequency distribution function y=axb. On the other hand, although the motif length distributions of ancient Chinese cannot be fitted with the Hyper-Pascal function, the entropy analyses show that there is a tendency that the distributions are more concentrated on some certain motif patterns.

Abstract:Words whose three successive factors of the same length are all different i.e. 3-anti-power words are a natural extension of square-free words (two successive factors of the same length are different). We give a way to verify whether a uniform morphism preserves 3-anti-power words (the image of a 3-anti-power word is a 3-anti-power word). A consequence of the existence of such morphisms is the possibility of generating an infinite 3-anti-power word.

Abstract:Motivated by a conjecture of Frid, Puzynina, and Zamboni, we investigate infinite words with the property that for infinitely many n, every length-n factor is a product of two palindromes. We show that every Sturmian word has this property, but this does not characterize the class of Sturmian words. We also show that the Thue-Morse word does not have this property. We investigate finite words with the maximal number of distinct palindrome pair factors and characterize the binary words that are not palindrome pairs but have the property that every proper factor is a palindrome pair.

Abstract:We study a class of rational Dyck paths with slope (2m+1)/2 corresponding to factor-free Dyck words, as introduced by P. Duchon. We show that, for the slopes considered in this paper, the language of factor-free Dyck words is generated by an auxiliary language that we examine from the algebraic and combinatorial points of view. We provide a lattice path description of this language, and give an explicit enumeration formula in terms of partial Bell polynomials. As a corollary, we obtain new formulas for the number of associated factor-free generalized Dyck words.

Abstract:Given an infinite word, enumerating its factors is an important exercise for understanding the structure of the word. The process of finding all the factors is quite tricky for two-dimensional words. In this paper, two possible ways of enumerating the factors of the fixed point ($f_{\infty,\infty}$) of the sequence of Fibonacci arrays and a method for locating these factors in $f_{\infty,\infty}$ are explored. In addition, the factor complexity and the locations of the factors of the fixed point of Fibonacci sequence of arrays are also analysed.

Abstract:A $4^-$-power is a non-empty word of the form $XXXX^-$, where $X^-$ is obtained from $X$ by erasing the last letter. A binary word is called {\em faux-bonacci} if it contains no $4^-$-powers, and no factor 11. We show that faux-bonacci words bear the same relationship to the Fibonacci morphism that overlap-free words bear to the Thue-Morse morphism. We prove the analogue of Fife's Theorem for faux-bonacci words, and characterize the lexicographically least and greatest infinite faux-bonacci words.

Abstract:Given an infinite word ${\bf w}$ on a finite alphabet, an immediate question arises:~can we understand the frequency of letters in ${\bf w}$\,? For words that are the fixed points of substitutions, the answer to this question is often `yes' -- the details and methods of these answers have been well-documented. In this paper, toward a better-understanding of the fixed points of binary substitutions, we delve deeper by investigating, in fine detail, the position of letters by defining various position functions and proving results about their behavior. Our analysis reveals new information about the Fibonacci substitution and the extended Pisa family of substitutions, as well as a new characterization of the Thue--Morse sequence.

Abstract:Let $\mb w$ be a morphic word over a finite alphabet $\Sigma$, and let $\Delta$ be a nonempty subset of $\Sigma$. We study the behavior of maximal blocks consisting only of letters from $\Delta$ in $\mb w$, and prove the following: let $(i_k,j_k)$ denote the starting and ending positions, respectively, of the $k$'th maximal $\Delta$-block in $\mb w$. Then $\limsup_{k\to\infty} (j_k/i_k)$ is algebraic if $\mb w$ is morphic, and rational if $\mb w$ is automatic. As a result, we show that the same conclusion holds if $(i_k,j_k)$ are the starting and ending positions of the $k$'th maximal zero block, and, more generally, of the $k$'th maximal $x$-block, where $x$ is an arbitrary word. This enables us to draw conclusions about the irrationality exponent of automatic and morphic numbers. In particular, we show that the irrationality exponent of automatic (resp., morphic) numbers belonging to a certain class that we define is rational (resp., algebraic).

Abstract:The present paper employs a synergetic approach to exploring the relationship between the length and frequency among English multiword formulaic sequences. It attempts to test whether Zipf's assumption on the inverse relationship between word length and word frequency, as well as the synergetic model constructed at lexical level, can be extended to multiword formulaic sequences. A corpus-driven approach is adopted to acquire sufficient data. Results show partial applicability of the assumption to a small part of formulaic sequences: sequences of words with whole structure and complete meaning. However, the majority of formulaic sequences, lexical bundles, are proved to be an exception to the conventional rule. The paper tries to offer explanation by exploring further the features of lexical bundles. It concludes that the synergetic system of length and frequency among lexical bundles is operated under the compromise between the requirements of minimization of production efforts and the requirements of maximization of information. Based on the analysis of synergetic relationship between length and frequency, this research shall prove that language is a self-regulating system, and that observed language phenomena can be understood and explained by laws and models. Besides, this study also includes register differences and offers a new perspective to register analysis.

Abstract:If $u$ and $v$ are two words, the correlation of $u$ over $v$ is a binary word that encodes all possible overlaps between $u$ and $v$. This concept was introduced by Guibas and Odlyzko as a key element of their method for enumerating the number of words of length $n$ over a given alphabet that avoid a given set of forbidden factors. In this paper we characterize the pairwise correlations between the minimal forbidden factors of the infinite Fibonacci word.

Abstract:We revisit the topic of power-free morphisms, focusing on the properties of the class of complementary morphisms. Such morphisms are defined over a 2-letter alphabet, and map the letters 0 and 1 to complementary words. We prove that every prefix of the famous Thue–Morse word t gives a complementary morphism that is 3+ -free and hence α -free for every real number α>3 . We also describe, using a 4-state binary finite automaton, the lengths of all prefixes of t that give cubefree complementary morphisms. Next, we show that 3-free (cubefree) complementary morphisms of length k exist for all k∉{3,6} . Moreover, if k is not of the form 3⋅2n , then the images of letters can be chosen to be factors of t . Finally, we observe that each cubefree complementary morphism is also α -free for some α<3 ; in contrast, no binary morphism that maps each letter to a word of length 3 (resp., a word of length 6) is α -free for any α<3 . In addition to more traditional techniques of combinatorics on words, we also rely on the Walnut theorem-prover. Its use and limitations are discussed.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) quasiperiodic Schrödinger equations have been studied by many authors in recent years (see for example [21]). In particular, much attention has been focussed on quasiperiodic potentials that are derived from the Fibonacci sequence, providing a. kind of prototype models for studying quasiperiodic systems. Starting from the Fibonacci sequence, some authors have proposed diverse generalisations [22]. On the other hand, the combinatorial properties of the Fibonacci infinite word are of great interest in mathematics and physics, such as fractal geometry, quasicrystals, number theory, formal language, computational complexity etc. See [1,3,4,5,7,11,12,13,14,17,22]. Moreover, the properties of the subwords of the Fibonacci infinite word have been studied extensively by many authors [3,7,13]. In this lecture, we shall present some new properties of the subwords of the Fibonacci word. This lecture consists of three parts. In the first part, after recalling some preliminary remarks on the Fibonacci word, we introduce the singular words and discuss their elementary properties. Then we establish two decompositions of the Fibonacci word in singular words and their consequences. By using these results, we discuss the local isomorphism of the Fibonacci word and the overlap properties of the factors, and we give a necessary and sufficient condition for local isomorphism. In the second part., we introduce the class of invertible substitutions which is a. natural generalisation of the Fibonacci substitution, and which is also an important, class of 1D quasiperiodic chains in physics [21]. We study first the group structure and local isomorphism of the invertible substitutions, then we study further the properties of the singular words of the invertible substitutions. In the third part we return again to the Fibonacci sequence.

Abstract:We explore a family of nested recurrence relations with arbitrary levels of nesting, which have an interpretation in terms of fixed points of morphisms over a countably infinite alphabet. Recurrences in this family are related to a number of well-known sequences, including Hofstadter's G sequence and the Conolly and Tanny sequences. For a recurrence a(n) in this family with only finitely terms, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the limit a(n)/n to exist.

Abstract:A square-free word is one which does not contain two consecutive occurrences of the same factor; a square-free morphism is one which produces a square-free word whenever applied to a square-free word. For testing square-freeness of a morphism, the previous researches (Berstel, Ehrenfeucht-Rozenberg, Crochemore, Hsiao et al., ...) dealt with the compactness claim: they proved that there is a bound (sometimes tight, depending on the morphism) such that a morphism is square-free if it is so on the words on the source alphabet of length up to this bound. In particular, when the morphism is ternary (the source alphabet of three letters) this bound is universally 5 and 5 is sharp on the target alphabet of 5 letters. In this paper we undertake a different approach: we do not search for any compactness bound or verify square-freeness excerpt for a few prerequisites; instead we define the relator on the source alphabet, the existence of which is relatively easy to verify by matching words for a common factor. As applications, we easily deduce all the previous bounds and we manifest the simplicity of performance by giving a short proof of a Lallement's result. More essentially, using it we show the optimum bound 5 for the ternary morphism on the alphabet of 4 letters and, by a more elaborate construction, on the alphabet of 3 letters. That gives the current problem the finishing touches.
