Abstract:We investigate the computational power of periodically iterated morphisms, also known as D0L systems with periodic control, PD0L systems for short. These systems give rise to a class of one-sided infinite sequences, called PD0L words. We construct a PD0L word with exponential subword complexity, thereby answering a question raised by Lepisto (1993) on the existence of such words. We solve another open problem concerning the decidability of the first-order theories of PD0L words; we show it is already undecidable whether a certain letter occurs in a PD0L word. This stands in sharp contrast to the situation for D0L words (purely morphic words), which are known to have at most quadratic subword complexity, and for which the monadic theory is decidable. The main result of our paper, leading to these answers, is that every computable word w over an alphabet Sigma can be embedded in a PD0L word u over an extended alphabet Gamma in the following two ways: (i) such that every finite prefix of w is a subword of u, and (ii) such that w is obtained from u by erasing all letters from Gamma not in Sigma. The PD0L system generating such a word u is constructed by encoding a Fractran program that computes the word w; Fractran is a programming language as powerful as Turing Machines. As a consequence of (ii), if we allow the application of finite state transducers to PD0L words, we obtain the set of all computable words. Thus the set of PD0L words is not closed under finite state transduction, whereas the set of D0L words is. It moreover follows that equality of PD0L words (given by their PD0L system) is undecidable. Finally, we show that if erasing morphisms are admitted, then the question of productivity becomes undecidable, that is, the question whether a given PD0L system defines an infinite word.

Critical exponent of binary words with few distinct palindromes

Abstract:We study infinite binary words that contain few distinct palindromes. In particular, we classify such words according to their critical exponents. This extends results by Fici and Zamboni [TCS 2013]. Interestingly, the words with 18 and 20 palindromes happen to be morphic images of the fixed point of the morphism $\texttt{0}\mapsto\texttt{01}$, $\texttt{1}\mapsto\texttt{21}$, $\texttt{2}\mapsto\texttt{0}$.

Abstract:An interesting phenomenon in combinatorics on words is when every recurrent word satisfying some avoidance constraints has the same factor set as a morphic word. An early example is the Hall-Thue word, fixed point of the morphism $\texttt{0}\to\texttt{012}$, $\texttt{1}\to\texttt{02}$, $\texttt{2}\to\texttt{1}$, which is essentially the only ternary word avoiding squares and the words \texttt{010} and \texttt{212}. We provide some examples of this phenomenon from various contexts.

Abstract:We revisit the topic of power-free morphisms, focusing on the properties of the class of complementary morphisms. Such morphisms are defined over a 2-letter alphabet, and map the letters 0 and 1 to complementary words. We prove that every prefix of the famous Thue–Morse word t gives a complementary morphism that is 3+ -free and hence α -free for every real number α>3 . We also describe, using a 4-state binary finite automaton, the lengths of all prefixes of t that give cubefree complementary morphisms. Next, we show that 3-free (cubefree) complementary morphisms of length k exist for all k∉{3,6} . Moreover, if k is not of the form 3⋅2n , then the images of letters can be chosen to be factors of t . Finally, we observe that each cubefree complementary morphism is also α -free for some α<3 ; in contrast, no binary morphism that maps each letter to a word of length 3 (resp., a word of length 6) is α -free for any α<3 . In addition to more traditional techniques of combinatorics on words, we also rely on the Walnut theorem-prover. Its use and limitations are discussed.

Abstract:The notion of Abelian complexity of infinite words was recently used by the three last authors to investigate various Abelian properties of words. In particular, using van der Waerden's theorem, they proved that if a word avoids Abelian k-powers for some integer k, then its Abelian complexity is unbounded. This suggests the following question: How frequently do Abelian k-powers occur in a word having bounded Abelian complexity? In particular, does every uniformly recurrent word having bounded Abelian complexity begin in an Abelian k-power? While this is true for various classes of uniformly recurrent words, including for example the class of all Sturmian words, in this paper we show the existence of uniformly recurrent binary words, having bounded Abelian complexity, which admit an infinite number of suffixes which do not begin in an Abelian square. We also show that the shift orbit closure of any infinite binary overlap-free word contains a word which avoids Abelian cubes in the beginning. We also consider the effect of morphisms on Abelian complexity and show that the morphic image of a word having bounded Abelian complexity has bounded Abelian complexity. Finally, we give an open problem on avoidability of Abelian squares in infinite binary words and show that it is equivalent to a well-known open problem of Pirillo–Varricchio and Halbeisen–Hungerbühler.

Our method gives an algorithm to determine whether certain types of morphic sequences avoid additive powers. We also show that there are [math] binary words of length [math] that avoid abelian 4-powers, which improves on previous estimates.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study the maximal pattern complexity of infinite words up to Abelian equivalence. We compute a lower bound for the Abelian maximal pattern complexity of infinite words which are both recurrent and aperiodic by projection. We show that in the case of binary words, the bound is actually achieved and gives a characterization of recurrent aperiodic words.

Abstract:Good words are binary words avoiding factors 11 and 1001, and patterns 0000 and 00010100. We show that good words bear the same relationship to the period-doubling sequence that overlap-free words bear to the Thue-Morse sequence. We prove an analogue of Fife's Theorem for good words, exhibit the lexicographically least and greatest infinite good words, and determine the patterns avoided by the period doubling word.

Some Remarks on Palindromic Periodicities

Abstract:We say a finite word $x$ is a palindromic periodicity if there exist two palindromes $p$ and $s$ such that $|x| \geq |ps|$ and $x$ is a prefix of the word $(ps)^\omega = pspsps\cdots$. In this paper we examine the palindromic periodicities occurring in some classical infinite words, such as Sturmian words, episturmian words, the Thue-Morse word, the period-doubling word, the Rudin-Shapiro word, the paperfolding word, and the Tribonacci word, and prove a number of results about them. We also prove results about words with the smallest number of palindromic periodicities.

Abstract:Prefix normal words are binary words that have no factor with more $1$s than the prefix of the same length. Finite prefix normal words were introduced in [Fici and Lipták, DLT 2011]. In this paper, we study infinite prefix normal words and explore their relationship to some known classes of infinite binary words. In particular, we establish a connection between prefix normal words and Sturmian words, between prefix normal words and abelian complexity, and between prefix normality and lexicographic order.

Abstract:Two finite words u and v are called abelian equivalent if each letter occurs equally many times in both u and v . The abelian closure A(x) of an infinite word x is the set of infinite words y such that, for each factor u of y , there exists a factor v of x which is abelian equivalent to u . The notion of an abelian closure gives a characterization of Sturmian words: among uniformly recurrent binary words, periodic and aperiodic Sturmian words are exactly those words for which A(x) equals the shift orbit closure Ω(x) . In this paper, we investigate how this property extends to non-binary words. We consider the abelian closures of most natural generalizations of Sturmian words to non-binary alphabets, such as balanced words and minimal complexity words. We characterize the abelian closures of words in these families and show that in both families, there exist both words which satisfy the property A(x)=Ω(x) and which do not. We observe that for Arnoux-Rauzy words, we always have a strict inclusion Ω(x)⊂A(x) . We also consider abelian closures of general subshifts and make some initial observations of their abelian closures and pose some related open questions.

Abstract:Given a countable set X (usually taken to be N or Z), an infinite permutation π of X is a linear ordering ≺ π of X, introduced in [6]. This paper investigates the combinatorial complexity of infinite permutations on N associated with the image of uniformly recurrent aperiodic binary words under the letter doubling map. An upper bound for the complexity is found for general words, and a formula for the complexity is established for the Sturmian words and the Thue-Morse word.

Abstract:An infinite word, which is aperiodic and codes the orbit of a transformation of the exchange of three intervals is called 3iet word. Such a word is thus a natural generalization of a sturmian word to a word over 3-letter alphabet. A morphism is said to be 3iet preserving if it maps any 3iet word to another 3iet word. It is known that the monoid of morphisms preserving sturmian words is finitely generated. On the contrary, in this note we prove that the monoid of 3iet preserving morphisms is not finitely generated, that is, there are infinitely many 3iet preserving morphisms, which cannot be written as a non-trivial decomposition of other 3iet preserving morphisms.

Abstract:We proceed with the study of ultimate periodicity properties related to overlaps between the suffixes of a left-infinite word and the prefixes of a right-infinite word . For a positive integer n , let g ( n ) be n minus the maximum length of overlaps between the suffix of and the prefix of of length n . In a recent publication we have shown that the function g has finite image if and only if and are ultimately periodic words with a same root. In this paper we give an asymptotic characterization of words and for which the function g has finite image. We prove that this condition is true if and only if the sequence tends to zero

Abstract:A palindromic periodicity is a factor of an infinite word $(ps)^\omega$ where $p$ and $s$ are palindromes and the factor has length at least $|ps|$, for example, $accabaccab$. In this paper we describe several ways in which a palindromic periodicity may arise through the interaction of palindromes and periodicity, the simplest case being when a palindrome is itself periodic. We then consider what happens when a word is a palindromic periodicity in two ways, a situation similar to that considered in the Fine and Wilf Lemma and obtain something slightly stronger than that lemma. The paper ends with suggestions for further work.

Abstract:Let $\mb w$ be a morphic word over a finite alphabet $\Sigma$, and let $\Delta$ be a nonempty subset of $\Sigma$. We study the behavior of maximal blocks consisting only of letters from $\Delta$ in $\mb w$, and prove the following: let $(i_k,j_k)$ denote the starting and ending positions, respectively, of the $k$'th maximal $\Delta$-block in $\mb w$. Then $\limsup_{k\to\infty} (j_k/i_k)$ is algebraic if $\mb w$ is morphic, and rational if $\mb w$ is automatic. As a result, we show that the same conclusion holds if $(i_k,j_k)$ are the starting and ending positions of the $k$'th maximal zero block, and, more generally, of the $k$'th maximal $x$-block, where $x$ is an arbitrary word. This enables us to draw conclusions about the irrationality exponent of automatic and morphic numbers. In particular, we show that the irrationality exponent of automatic (resp., morphic) numbers belonging to a certain class that we define is rational (resp., algebraic).

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) quasiperiodic Schrödinger equations have been studied by many authors in recent years (see for example [21]). In particular, much attention has been focussed on quasiperiodic potentials that are derived from the Fibonacci sequence, providing a. kind of prototype models for studying quasiperiodic systems. Starting from the Fibonacci sequence, some authors have proposed diverse generalisations [22]. On the other hand, the combinatorial properties of the Fibonacci infinite word are of great interest in mathematics and physics, such as fractal geometry, quasicrystals, number theory, formal language, computational complexity etc. See [1,3,4,5,7,11,12,13,14,17,22]. Moreover, the properties of the subwords of the Fibonacci infinite word have been studied extensively by many authors [3,7,13]. In this lecture, we shall present some new properties of the subwords of the Fibonacci word. This lecture consists of three parts. In the first part, after recalling some preliminary remarks on the Fibonacci word, we introduce the singular words and discuss their elementary properties. Then we establish two decompositions of the Fibonacci word in singular words and their consequences. By using these results, we discuss the local isomorphism of the Fibonacci word and the overlap properties of the factors, and we give a necessary and sufficient condition for local isomorphism. In the second part., we introduce the class of invertible substitutions which is a. natural generalisation of the Fibonacci substitution, and which is also an important, class of 1D quasiperiodic chains in physics [21]. We study first the group structure and local isomorphism of the invertible substitutions, then we study further the properties of the singular words of the invertible substitutions. In the third part we return again to the Fibonacci sequence.

Abstract:Words whose three successive factors of the same length are all different i.e. 3-anti-power words are a natural extension of square-free words (two successive factors of the same length are different). We give a way to verify whether a uniform morphism preserves 3-anti-power words (the image of a 3-anti-power word is a 3-anti-power word). A consequence of the existence of such morphisms is the possibility of generating an infinite 3-anti-power word.

Abstract:Given an infinite word ${\bf w}$ on a finite alphabet, an immediate question arises:~can we understand the frequency of letters in ${\bf w}$\,? For words that are the fixed points of substitutions, the answer to this question is often `yes' -- the details and methods of these answers have been well-documented. In this paper, toward a better-understanding of the fixed points of binary substitutions, we delve deeper by investigating, in fine detail, the position of letters by defining various position functions and proving results about their behavior. Our analysis reveals new information about the Fibonacci substitution and the extended Pisa family of substitutions, as well as a new characterization of the Thue--Morse sequence.
