Abstract:To every Gromov hyperbolic space X one can associate a space at infinity called the Gromov boundary of X. Gromov showed that quasi-isometries of hyperbolic metric spaces induce homeomorphisms on their boundaries, thus giving rise to a well-defined notion of the boundary of a hyperbolic group. Croke and Kleiner showed that the visual boundary of non-positively curved (CAT(0)) groups is not well-defined, since quasi-isometric CAT(0) spaces can have non-homeomorphic boundaries. For any sublinear function $\kappa$, we consider a subset of the visual boundary called the $\kappa$-Morse boundary and show that it is QI-invariant and metrizable. This is to say, the $\kappa$-Morse boundary of a CAT(0) group is well-defined. In the case of Right-angled Artin groups, it is shown in the Appendix that the Poisson boundary of random walks is naturally identified with the $\sqrt{t \log t}$--boundary.

Sigma-compactness of Morse boundaries in Morse local-to-global groups and applications to stationary measures

Abstract:We show that the Morse boundary of a Morse local-to-global group is $\sigma$-compact. Moreover, we show that the converse holds for small cancellation groups. As an application, we show that the Morse boundary of a non-hyperbolic, Morse local-to-global group that has contraction does not admit a non-trivial stationary measure. In fact, we show that any stationary measure on a geodesic boundary of such a groups needs to assign measure zero to the Morse boundary. Unlike previous results, we do not need any assumptions on the stationary measures considered.

Non-singular extensions of circle-valued Morse functions

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the non-singular extension problem of circle-valued Morse functions on closed orientable surfaces. The problem is when can a submersion from a collaring of a closed orientable surface to a circle, which is a circle-valued Morse function on the boundary, be extended to a submersion from a 3-dimensional manifold to a circle. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a non-singular extension of a circle-valued Morse function as the main theorem. After that, we consider a special case that the surface is a torus as one application of the theorem.

Abstract:We establish Morse inequalities for a noncompact manifold with a cocompact and properly discontinuous action of a discrete group, where Morse functions are not necessarily invariant under the group action. The inequalities are given in terms of the $L^2$-Betti numbers and functions on the acting group which describe rough configurations of critical points of a Morse function.

Abstract:Topology change is considered to be a necessary feature of quantum gravity by some authors, and impossible by others. One of the main arguments against it is that spacetimes with changing spatial topology have bad causal properties. Borde and Sorkin proposed a way to avoid this dilemma by considering topology changing spacetimes constructed from Morse functions, where the metric is allowed to vanish at isolated points. They conjectured that these Morse spacetimes are causally continuous (hence quite well behaved), as long as the index of the Morse points is different from $1$ and $n-1$. In this paper, we prove a special case of this conjecture. We also argue, heuristically, that the original conjecture is actually false, and formulate a refined version of it.

Abstract:We define a notion of Morse function and establish Morse theory-like theorems over offsets of any compact set in a Euclidean space at regular values of their distance function. Using non-smooth analysis and tools from geometric measure theory, we prove that the homotopy type of the sublevels sets of these Morse functions changes at a critical value by gluing exactly one cell around each critical point.

Abstract:We construct a hyperbolic group with a finitely presented subgroup, which has infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements. We also use a version of Morse theory with high dimensional horizontal cells and use handle cancellation arguments to produce other examples of subgroups of CAT(0) groups with infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements.

Abstract:This paper gives a detailed analysis of the Cannon–Thurston maps associated to a general class of hyperbolic free group extensions. Let F denote a free group of finite rank at least 3 and consider a convex cocompact subgroup Γ ≤ Out(F), i.e. one for which the orbit map from Γ into the free factor complex of F is a quasi-isometric embedding. The subgroup Γ determines an extension EΓ of F, and the main theorem of Dowdall–Taylor [DT14] states that in this situation EΓ is hyperbolic if and only if Γ is purely atoroidal.Here, we give an explicit geometric description of the Cannon–Thurston maps ∂F → ∂EΓ for these hyperbolic free group extensions, the existence of which follows from a general result of Mitra. In particular, we obtain a uniform bound on the multiplicity of the Cannon–Thurston map, showing that this map has multiplicity at most 2 rank(F). This theorem generalizes the main result of Kapovich and Lustig [KL15] which treats the special case where Γ is infinite cyclic. We also answer a question of Mahan Mitra by producing an explicit example of a hyperbolic free group extension for which the natural map from the boundary of Γ to the space of laminations of the free group (with the Chabauty topology) is not continuous.

On the causal discontinuity of Morse spacetimes

Abstract:Morse spacetime is a model of singular Lorentzian manifold, built upon a Morse function which serves as a global time function outside its critical points. The Borde-Sorkin conjecture states that a Morse spacetime is causally continuous if and only if the index and coindex of critical points of the corresponding Morse function are both different from 1. The conjecture has recently been confirmed by Garcia Heveling for the case of small anisotropy and Euclidean background metric. Here, we provide a complementary counterexample: a four dimensional Morse spacetime whose critical point has index 2 and large enough anisotropy is causally discontinuous and thus the Borde-Sorkin conjecture does not hold. The proof features a low regularity causal structure and causal bubbling.

Abstract:We develop the theory of Thurston maps that are defined everywhere on the topological sphere $S^2$ with a possible exception of a single essential singularity. We establish an analog of the celebrated W. Thurston's characterization theorem for a broad class of such Thurston maps having four postsingular values. To achieve this, we analyze the corresponding pullback maps defined on the one-complex dimensional Teichmüller space. This analysis also allows us to derive various properties of Hurwitz classes of the corresponding Thurston maps.

Abstract:Sublinearly Morse boundaries of proper geodesic spaces are introduced by Qing, Rafi and Tiozzo. Expanding on this work, Qing and Rafi recently developed the quasi-redirecting boundary, denoted $\partial G$, to include all directions of metric spaces at infinity. Both boundaries are topological spaces that consist of equivalence classes of quasi-geodesic rays and are quasi-isometrically invariant. In this paper, we study these boundaries when the space is equipped with a geometric group action. In particular, we show that $G$ acts minimally on $\partial_\kappa G$ and that contracting elements of G induces a weak north-south dynamic on $\partial_\kappa G$. We also prove, when $\partial G$ exists and $|\partial_\kappa G|\geq3$, $G$ acts minimally on $\partial G$ and $\partial G$ is a second countable topological space. The last section concerns the restriction to proper CAT(0) spaces and finite dimensional \CAT cube complexes. We show that when $G$ acts geometrically on a finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex (whose QR boundary is assumed to exist), then a nontrivial QR boundary implies the existence of a Morse element in $G$. Lastly, we show that if $X$ is a proper cocompact CAT(0) space, then $\partial G$ is a visibility space.

Abstract:We investigate topological properties of simple Morse functions with 4 critical points on immersed 2-spheres. To classify such functions, dual graph of immersion and Reeb graphs is used. We have found all possible structures of the functions:6 structures with 4 critical points on one 1-strata component, 7 structures with two points on the 1-strata and two points on the 2-strata, 7 structures with two 1-stratas and a three-connected 2-strata, three structures with two 1-stratas and without a three-connected 2-strata.

Abstract:Given a sublinear function $\kappa$, $\kappa$-Morse boundaries $\pka X$ of proper \CAT spaces are introduced by Qing, Rafi and Tiozzo. It is a topological space that consists of a large set of quasi-geodesic rays and it is quasi-isometrically invariant and metrizable. In this paper, we study the sublinearly Morse boundaries with the assumption that there is a proper cocompact action of a group $G$ on the \CAT space in question. We show that $G$ acts minimally on $\pka G$ and that contracting elements of $G$ induces a weak north-south dynamic on $\pka G$. Furthermore, we show that a homeomorphism $f \from \pka G \to \pka G'$ comes from a quasi-isometry if and only if $f$ is successively quasi-m{ö}bius and stable. Lastly, we characterize exactly when the sublinearly Morse boundary of a \CAT space is compact.

Abstract:By studying spaces of flow graphs in a closed oriented manifold, we construct operations on its cohomology, parametrized by the homology of the moduli spaces of compact Riemann surfaces with boundary marked points. We show that the operations satisfy the gluing axiom of an open homological conformal field theory. This complements previous constructions due to R. Cohen et al., K. Costello and M. Kontsevich and is also the Morse theoretic counterpart to a conjectural construction of operations on the Lagrangian Floer homology of the zero section of a cotangent bundle, obtained by studying uncompactified moduli spaces of higher genus pseudoholomorphic curves.

Abstract:We introduce a novel combinatorial method to study $Q^{**}$-transformations of group presentations or, equivalently, 3-deformations of CW-complexes of dimension 2. Our procedure is based on a refinement of discrete Morse theory that gives a Whitehead simple homotopy equivalence from a regular CW-complex to the simplified Morse CW-complex, with an explicit description of the attaching maps and bounds on the dimension of the complexes involved in the deformation. We apply this technique to show that some known potential counterexamples to the Andrews--Curtis conjecture do satisfy the conjecture.

Abstract:Comparing invariants from both topological and geometric perspectives is a key focus in index theorem. This paper compares higher analytic and topological torsions and establishes a version of the higher Cheeger-Müller/Bismut-Zhang theorem. In fact, Bismut-Goette achieved this comparison assuming the existence of fiberwise Morse functions satisfying the fiberwise Thom-Smale transversality condition (TS condition). To fully generalize the theorem, we should remove this assumption. Notably, unlike fiberwise Morse functions, fiberwise generalized Morse functions (GMFs) always exist, we extend Bismut-Goette's setup by considering a fibration $ M \to S $ with a unitarily flat complex bundle $ F \to M $ and a fiberwise GMF $ f $, while retaining the TS condition. Compared to Bismut-Goette's work, handling birth-death points for a generalized Morse function poses a key difficulty. To address this, first, by the work of the author M.P., joint with Zhang and Zhu, we focus on a relative version of the theorem. Here, analytic and topological torsions are normalized by subtracting their corresponding torsions for trivial bundles. Next, using new techniques from by the author J.Y., we excise a small neighborhood around the locus where $f$ has birth-death points. This reduces the problem to Bismut-Goette's settings (or its version with boundaries) via a Witten-type deformation. However, new difficulties arise from very singular critical points during this <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://deformation.To" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> address these, we extend methods from Bismut-Lebeau, using Agmon estimates for noncompact manifolds developed by Dai and J.Y.

Equivariant Morse Homology for Reflection Actions via Broken Trajectories

Abstract:We consider a finite group $G$ acting on a manifold $M$. For any equivariant Morse function, which is a generic condition, there does not always exist an equivariant metric $g$ on $M$ such that the pair $(f,g)$ is Morse-Smale. Here, the pair $(f,g)$ is called Morse-Smale if the descending and ascending manifolds intersect transversely. The best possible metrics $g$ are those that make the pair $(f,g)$ stably Morse-Smale. A diffeomorphism $\phi: M \to M$ is a reflection, if $\phi^2 = \operatorname{id}$ and the fixed point set of $\phi$ forms a codimension-one submanifold (with $M \setminus M^{\operatorname{fix}}$ not necessarily disconnected). In this note, we focus on the special case where the group $G = \{\operatorname{id}, \phi\}$. We show that the condition of being stably Morse-Smale is generic for metrics $g$. Given a stably Morse-Smale pair, we introduce a canonical equivariant Thom-Smale-Witten complex by counting certain broken trajectories. This has applications to the case when we have a manifold with boundary and when the Morse function has critical points on the boundary. We provide an alternative definition of the Thom-Smale-Witten complexes, which are quasi-isomorphic to those defined by Kronheimer and Mrowka. We also explore the case when $G$ is generated by multiple reflections. As an example, we compute the Thom-Smale-Witten complex of an upright higher-genus surface by counting broken trajectories.
