Abstract:Furthering the development of Da Lio-Gianocca-Rivière's Morse stability theory (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.03124" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.03124">arXiv:2212.03124</a>) that was first applied to harmonic maps between manifolds and later extended to the case of Willmore immersions (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2306.04608" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.04608">arXiv:2306.04608</a>-04609), we generalise the method to the case of (intrinsic or extrinsic) biharmonic maps. In the course of the proof, we develop a novel method to prove strong energy quantization (in the space of squared-integrable functions that corresponds to the pre-dual of the Marcinkiewicz space of weakly squared-integrable functions) in a wide class of problems in geometric analysis, which allows us to recover some previous results in a unified fashion.

Morse–Sard theorem and Luzin N-property: a new synthesis result for Sobolev spaces

Abstract:For a regular (in a sense) mapping v:ℝ^n →ℝ^d we study the following problem: let S be a subset of m-critical a set Z̃_v,m={ rank∇ v≤ m} and the equality ℋ^τ(S)=0 (or the inequality ℋ^τ(S)<∞) holds for some τ>0. Does it imply that ℋ^σ(v(S))=0 for some σ=σ(τ,m)? (Here ℋ^τ means the τ-dimensional Hausdorff measure.) For the classical classes C^k-smooth and C^k+α-Holder mappings this problem was solved in the papers by Bates and Moreira. We solve the problem for Sobolev W^k_p and fractional Sobolev W^k+α_p classes as well. Note that we study the Sobolev case under minimal integrability assumptions p=max(1,n/k), i.e., it guarantees in general only the continuity (not everywhere differentiability) of a mapping. In particular, there is an interesting and unexpected analytical phenomena here: if τ=n (i.e., in the case of Morse–Sard theorem), then the value σ(τ) is the same for the Sobolev W^k_p and for the classical C^k-smooth case. But if τ<n, then the value σ depends on p also; the value σ for C^k case could be obtained as the limit when p→∞. The similar phenomena holds for Holder continuous C^k+α and for the fractional Sobolev W^k+α_p classes. The proofs of the most results are based on our previous joint papers with J. Bourgain and J. Kristensen (2013, 2015). We also crucially use very deep Y. Yomdin's entropy estimates of near critical values for polynomials (based on algebraic geometry tools).

Abstract:Subgroup stability is a strong notion of quasiconvexity that generalizes convex cocompactness in a variety of settings. In this paper, we characterize stability of a subgroup by properties of its limit set on the Morse boundary. Given $H<G$, both finitely generated, $H$ is stable exactly when all the limit points of $H$ are conical, or equivalently when all the limit points of $H$ are horospherical, as long as the limit set of $H$ is a compact subset of the Morse boundary for $G$.

Abstract:We first establish the Morse decomposition theory of periodic invariant sets for non-autonomous periodic general dynamical systems (set-valued dynamical systems). Then we discuss the stability of Morse decompositions of periodic uniform forward attractors. We also apply the abstract results to non-autonomous periodic differential inclusions with only upper semi-continuous right-hand side. We show that Morse decompositions are robust with respect to both internal and external perturbations (upper semi-continuity of Morse sets). Finally as an application we study the effect of small time delays to asymptotic behavior of control systems from the point of view of Morse decompositions.

Abstract:We prove stability results of the Morse index plus nullity of Yang-Mills connections in dimension 4 under weak convergence. Precisely we establish that the sum of the Morse indices and the nullity of a bounded sequence of Yang-Mills connections is asymptotically bounded above by the sum of the Morse index and the nullity of the weak limit and the bubbles while the Morse indices are asymptotically bounded below by the sum of the Morse index of the weak limit and the bubbles.

On Uncertainty Principle for the Morse - Sard Theorem

Abstract:We prove a bridge theorem that includes the classical Morse--Sard Theorem on critical values and its previous elegant extensions obtained by Dubovitskii and Federer as particular cases. Intuitively, the sense of this bridge theorem is very close to the~uncertainty principle in theoretical physics: the more precise is the information we receive on measure of the image of the critical set, the less precisely the preimages are described, and vice versa. The result is new even for the classical C^k-case; similar results are established for the Holder and Sobolev classes of mappings with minimal integrability assumptions that guarantee in general only the continuity (not everywhere differentiability) of a~mapping. The proofs of the most results are based on our previous joint papers with J.~Bourgain and J.Kristensen (2013, 2015). We also crucially use very deep Y.~Yomdinu0027s entropy estimates of near critical values for polynomials (based on algebraic geometry tools). Abstract:The Cobordism Conjecture predicts spacetime-ending configurations, such as Bubbles of Nothing (BoN), being commonplace. These correspond to vacuum decays in which the compactification manifold $\mathcal{C}_n$ shrinks to a point, with the instability expanding at the speed of light and leaving nothing (not even spacetime) behind. Most constructions of BoN or cobordisms to nothing found in the literature feature simple instances of $\mathcal{C}_n$ or singular cobordisms, which cannot be approached from the effective field theory. Assuming the solution mediating such decay to nothing is homeomorphic to a smooth description, we are able to go a step further, and obtain topological bounds on its homology for generic $\mathcal{C}_n$. Through the use of Morse-Bott theory we then translate this into information on the number and types of topology changes the compact manifold experiences as we move towards the tip of the bordism, as well as the location of possible cobordism defects. We illustrate our results with different detailed examples coming from String Theory. Furthermore, with this approach, we are able to study more complicated arrangements such as BoN collisions or intersection of End of the World branes.

Abstract:The first author in recent work with D. Gay developed the notion of a Morse structure on an open book as a tool for studying closed contact 3-manifolds. We extend the notion of Morse structure to extendable partial open books in order to study contact 3-manifolds with convex boundary.

Abstract:We establish Luzin N- and Morse-Sard properties for mappings v: R-n -> R-m of the Sobolev-Lorentz class W-p,1(k) with k = n - m + 1 and p = n/k (this is the sharp case that guaranties the continuity of mappings). Using these results, we prove that almost all level sets are finite disjoint unions of C-l-smooth compact manifolds of dimension n - m.

Abstract:We give a description of the structure of finite Morse index solutions to two free boundary problems in $\mathbb{R}^2$. These free boundary problems are models of phase transition and they are closely related to minimal hypersurfaces. We show that these finite Morse index solutions have finitely many ends and they converge exponentially to these ends at infinity. As an important tool in the proof, a quadratic decay estimate for the curvature of free boundaries is established.

Abstract:In the previous paper [Ch1], we studied the Minimax Principle as well as the Ljusternik–Schnirelman category theory for harmonic maps with prescribed boundary data defined on Riemann surfaces by the heat flow method. In this paper, we shall continue our study on Morse theory. Our main results are the Morse inequalities (Theorem 1) for isolated harmonic maps, and the Morse handle body decomposition for nondegenerate harmonic maps (Theorem 2). These results are extensions of the work of K. Uhlenbeck [U1], where the harmonic maps are defined on manifolds without boundary, and are all assumed to be nondegenerate. Our method is based on the heat flow by which the deformation is constructed. In contrast to the perturbation method developed by K. Uhlenbeck [U1], our approach seems more direct than hers.

Abstract:Families of Bridgeland stability conditions induce families of stability data, wall-crossing structures and scattering diagrams on the motivic Hall algebra. These structures can be transferred to the quantum torus if the stability conditions of the family have global dimension at most 2. We show that geometric stability conditions on surfaces with nef anticanonical bundle have global dimension 2 and we study the resulting family of stability data. We formulate a conjecture relating this family to the family of stability data associated with a quiver with potential and we verify this conjecture for the projective plane.

Abstract:In the study of closed geodesics, Marston Morse developed his theory on the calculus of variations in the large. The Morse inequalities, which link on one hand, the numbers of critical points in various types of a function, and on the other hand, the topological invariants of the underlying manifold, play an important role in Morse theory. Naturally, they provide an estimate for the number of critical points of a function by using the topology of the manifold. Hopefully, this topological method would deal with the existence and the multiplicity of solutions of certain nonlinear differential equations. However, in this theory, the manifold is compact, and the functions are assumed to be C2 and to have only nondegenerate critical points; all of these restrict the applications seriously. In contrast, Leray-Schauder degree theory has become a very useful topological method. In 1946, at the bicentennial conferences of Princeton University, there was much discussion of their contrast. M. Shiffman hoped that the two methods could be brought closer together “so that they may alter and improve each other, and also so that each may fill out the gaps in the scope of the other” [Pr]. Since then, great efforts have been made to extend the Morse theory. We only mention a few names of the pioneers as follows: R. Bott, E. Rothe, R. S. Palais, S. Smale, D. Gromoll, W. Meyer, A. Marino, and G. Prodi.
Morse Index Stability of Willmore Immersions I

Abstract:In a recent work, F. Da Lio, M. Gianocca, and T. Rivière developped a new method to show upper semi-continuity results in geometric analysis, which they applied to conformally invariant Lagrangians in dimension $2$ (that include harmonic maps). In this article, we apply this method to show that the sum of the Morse index and the nullity of Willmore immersions is upper semi-continuous, provided that the limiting immersions and the bubbles are free of branch points. Our result covers the case of degenerating Riemann surfaces for which the ratio of the second residue (considered by P. Laurain and T. Rivière in their work on the energy quantization of Willmore surfaces) and the length of the minimal shrinking geodesic of the underlying sequence of Riemann surfaces is smaller than a universal constant.

Sigma-compactness of Morse boundaries in Morse local-to-global groups and applications to stationary measures

Abstract:We show that the Morse boundary of a Morse local-to-global group is $\sigma$-compact. Moreover, we show that the converse holds for small cancellation groups. As an application, we show that the Morse boundary of a non-hyperbolic, Morse local-to-global group that has contraction does not admit a non-trivial stationary measure. In fact, we show that any stationary measure on a geodesic boundary of such a groups needs to assign measure zero to the Morse boundary. Unlike previous results, we do not need any assumptions on the stationary measures considered.

Sublinearly Morse Boundary I: CAT(0) Spaces

Abstract:To every Gromov hyperbolic space X one can associate a space at infinity called the Gromov boundary of X. Gromov showed that quasi-isometries of hyperbolic metric spaces induce homeomorphisms on their boundaries, thus giving rise to a well-defined notion of the boundary of a hyperbolic group. Croke and Kleiner showed that the visual boundary of non-positively curved (CAT(0)) groups is not well-defined, since quasi-isometric CAT(0) spaces can have non-homeomorphic boundaries. For any sublinear function $\kappa$, we consider a subset of the visual boundary called the $\kappa$-Morse boundary and show that it is QI-invariant and metrizable. This is to say, the $\kappa$-Morse boundary of a CAT(0) group is well-defined. In the case of Right-angled Artin groups, it is shown in the Appendix that the Poisson boundary of random walks is naturally identified with the $\sqrt{t \log t}$--boundary.

Abstract:Topology change is considered to be a necessary feature of quantum gravity by some authors, and impossible by others. One of the main arguments against it is that spacetimes with changing spatial topology have bad causal properties. Borde and Sorkin proposed a way to avoid this dilemma by considering topology changing spacetimes constructed from Morse functions, where the metric is allowed to vanish at isolated points. They conjectured that these Morse spacetimes are causally continuous (hence quite well behaved), as long as the index of the Morse points is different from $1$ and $n-1$. In this paper, we prove a special case of this conjecture. We also argue, heuristically, that the original conjecture is actually false, and formulate a refined version of it.

Abstract:The basic results in Morse theory are the Morse inequalities and the Morse handle body theorem. They are established on the Banach Finsler manifolds or on the Hilbert Riemannian manifolds in Section 4. The tool in this study is the deformation theorem, which is introduced in Section 3. Some preliminaries on algebraic topology and on infinite dimensional manifolds are reviewed in Sections 1 and 2 respectively. Readers who are familiar with the background material may skip over these two sections. Gromoll-Meyer theory on isolated critical points plays an important role in the applications of Morse theory because the nondegeneracy assumption in the handle body theorem might not hold for concrete problems. Section 5 is devoted to introducing Gromoll-Meyer theory systematically and examines the splitting lemma, the homotopy invariance theorem, the shifting theorem, and the Marino Prodi approximation theorem. The rest of the chapter consists of the extensions of the basic results of Morse theory in different directions: in Section 6.1, to the extension to manifolds with boundaries as well as to the functions satisfying certain boundary value conditions, in Section 6.2, to the extension from manifolds to the locally convex closed subsets; and, in Section 7, to functions with symmetry under a compact Lie group action.
