Abstract:hieving the ultimate quantum precision in the estimation of multiple physical parameters simultaneously is a challenge in quantum metrology due to fundamental limitations and experimental challenges in harnessing the necessary quantum resources. We propose an experimentally feasible scheme to reach Heisenberg limited sensitivity in the simultaneous estimation of two unknown phase parameters in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer by using a squeezed and a coherent state of light as input and homodyne detections at the outputs.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to achieve Heisenberg - limit sensitivity when simultaneously estimating two unknown phase parameters in the Mach - Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Specifically, the author proposes an experimentally feasible scheme, using squeezed states and coherent states as inputs, and performing homodyne detection at the output end to achieve simultaneous estimation of the two unknown phases, and in the estimation process, it does not depend on the specific values of the parameters, nor does it need to adjust the optical network. ### Main problem summary: 1. **Challenges in multi - parameter quantum measurement**: - Traditional methods are difficult to simultaneously estimate multiple physical parameters and achieve Heisenberg - limit sensitivity. - Using quantum resources such as photon - number states and entangled states has challenges in generating and maintaining quantum coherence. - Determining the optimal measurement scheme that can simultaneously achieve Heisenberg - limit sensitivity for multiple parameters is an urgent problem to be solved. 2. **Specific problem description**: - In the MZI, there are two unknown phase parameters \(\phi_1\) and \(\phi_2\) located in the upper and lower arms respectively. - The goal is to design an experimental scheme that can achieve Heisenberg - limit sensitivity \(O(1/N)\) when simultaneously estimating these two phase parameters, where \(N\) is the average photon number. ### Solutions: 1. **Input state selection**: - Use a displaced squeezed state \(|\alpha_1, r\rangle\) and a coherent state \(|\alpha_2\rangle\) as inputs. - This combination can theoretically provide sufficient quantum advantage to achieve high - precision measurement. 2. **Measurement method**: - Perform homodyne detection at the two output ends of the MZI respectively. - Optimize the measurement sensitivity by adjusting the phase \(\theta_i\) of the local oscillator, with the specific condition: \[ \theta_i=\gamma_{i1}+\frac{\pi}{2}+\frac{k_i}{N_s}, \quad i = 1,2 \] where \(\gamma_{i1}\) is the minimum variance phase of the quadrature field, and \(k_i\) is a real constant independent of \(N_s\). 3. **Theoretical analysis**: - By calculating the Fisher information matrix (FIM), it is proved that this scheme can simultaneously estimate two phase parameters \(\phi_s = (\phi_1+\phi_2)\) and \(\phi_d = (\phi_1 - \phi_2)\) and achieve Heisenberg - limit sensitivity. - The FIM consists of two parts: the signal - variation contribution \(F_S\) and the noise - variation contribution \(F_N\). 4. **Experimental verification**: - Through the maximum - likelihood estimation (MLE) method, it is verified that this scheme can approach the Cramér - Rao lower bound (CRB) with a small number of experimental iterations, thereby achieving Heisenberg - limit sensitivity. ### Conclusion: This research proposes an experimental scheme for simultaneously estimating two unknown phase parameters in the MZI, using squeezed states and coherent states as inputs, and achieving Heisenberg - limit sensitivity through homodyne detection. This achievement not only shows the potential of quantum metrology in multi - parameter estimation, but also provides new ideas and methods for multi - parameter estimation in more complex optical networks in the future.
