Abstract:Mathematicians have been proposing for sometimes that Monge-Ampère equation, a nonlinear generalization of the Poisson equation, where trace of the Hessian is replaced by its determinant, provides an alternative non-relativistic description of gravity. Monge-Ampère equation is affine invariant, has rich geometric properties, connects to optimal transport theory, and remains bounded at short distances. Monge-Ampère gravity, that uses a slightly different form of the Monge-Ampère equation, naturally emerges through the application of large-deviation principle to a Brownian system of indistinguishable and independent particles. In this work we provide a physical formulation of this mathematical model, study its theoretical viability and confront it with observations. We show that Monge-Ampère gravity cannot replace the Newtonian gravity as it does not withstand the solar-system test. We then show that Monge-Ampère gravity can describe a scalar field, often evoked in modified theories of gravity such as Galileons. We show that Monge-Ampère gravity, as a nonlinear model of a new scalar field, is screened at short distances, and behaves differently from Newtonian gravity above galactic scales but approaches it asymptotically. Finally, we write a relativistic Lagrangian for Monge-Ampère gravity in flat space time, which is the field equation of a sum of the Lagrangians of all Galileons. We also show how the Monge-Ampère equation can be obtained from the fully covariant Lagrangian of quartic Galileon in the static limit. The connection between optimal transport theory and modified theories of gravity with second-order field equations, unravelled here, remains a promising domain to further explore.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper attempts to explore whether Monge - Ampère Gravity (MAG) can be an alternative or complementary model to Newtonian gravity. Specifically, the paper mainly focuses on the following aspects: 1. **The connection between the Monge - Ampère equation and the optimal transport theory**: - The paper explores whether the Monge - Ampère equation can provide a better gravitational model than the Poisson equation at the non - relativistic level. The Monge - Ampère equation is a non - linear generalized Poisson equation, where its trace is replaced by its determinant. - The author studies the connection between the Monge - Ampère equation and the optimal transport theory and points out that Monge - Ampère gravity can naturally emerge from a Brownian system through the large - deviation principle. 2. **The physical formulation of Monge - Ampère gravity**: - The paper provides the physical formulation of Monge - Ampère gravity, studies its theoretical feasibility, and compares it with observational data. - The author shows that Monge - Ampère gravity cannot replace Newtonian gravity because it fails the solar system tests. 3. **The relationship between Monge - Ampère gravity and the Galileon scalar field**: - The paper explores whether Monge - Ampère gravity can describe a scalar field, which is often mentioned in modified gravity theories, such as the Galileon theory. - The author shows that Monge - Ampère gravity, as a new non - linear scalar field model, is shielded at short distances and behaves differently from Newtonian gravity on galactic scales and above, but approaches Newtonian gravity asymptotically. 4. **Monge - Ampère gravity in the relativistic framework**: - The paper writes the relativistic Lagrangian form of Monge - Ampère gravity in flat spacetime, which is the sum of all Galileon Lagrangians. - The author also shows how to obtain the Monge - Ampère equation from the fully covariant quartic Galileon Lagrangian in the static limit. 5. **The applications of Monge - Ampère gravity inside and outside the solar system**: - The paper studies the applications of Monge - Ampère gravity within the solar system, especially its influence on the precession of the perihelion of planets. - The author calculates the influence of Monge - Ampère gravity on celestial bodies outside the solar system, especially its behavior on galactic and cosmological scales. ### Key formulas 1. **Monge - Ampère equation**: \[ \det(D^2\Phi)=\alpha\rho(x) \] where \(D^2\Phi = \partial_i\partial_j\Phi\) is the Hessian matrix of the potential function \(\Phi\), and the constant \(\alpha\) is used to maintain the correct physical units. 2. **Monge - Ampère gravitational equation**: \[ \det(I + \beta D^2\phi_{MA})=\alpha\rho(x) \] where \(\beta\) is a new physical constant. 3. **Weak - field limit of the Monge - Ampère gravitational equation**: \[ \det(I + \beta D^2\phi_{MA})=1+\beta\Delta\phi_{MA}+O(\beta^2\phi_{MA}^2) \] 4. **Newtonian gravitational equation**: \[ \Delta\phi_N = 4\pi G_N\rho \] 5. **Radial derivative of Monge - Ampère gravity**: \[ \partial_r\phi_{MA}=4\pi G_{MA}\bar{\rho}\left(\frac{r^3+\int_0^}{}
