Abstract:Thermal diffusion has been studied for over 150 years. Despite of the long history and the increasing importance of the phenomenon, the physics of thermal diffusion remains poorly understood. In this paper Ludwig's thermal diffusion is explained using Einstein's random walk. The only new structure added is the spatial heterogeneity of the random walk to reflect the temperature gradient of thermal diffusion. Hence, the walk length and the walk speed are location dependent functions in this paper. Then, a mathematical understanding of such a random walk gives the foundation of the thermal diffusion as clearly as the original homogeneous case of Einstein.

Diffusions and random walks with prescribed sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates

Abstract:Given suitable functions $V, \Psi:[0,\infty) \to [0,\infty)$, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on $V,\Psi$ for the existence of a metric measure space and a symmetric diffusion process that satisfies sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates with volume growth profile $V$ and escape time profile $\Psi$. We prove sufficiency by constructing a new family of diffusions. Special cases of this construction also leads to a new family of infinite graphs whose simple random walks satisfy sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates with prescribed volume growth and escape time profiles. In particular, these random walks on graphs generalizes earlier results of Barlow who considered the case $V(r)=r^\alpha$ and $\Psi(r)=r^\beta$ (Rev Mat Iberoam 2004). The family of diffusions we construct have martingale dimension one but can have arbitrarily high spectral dimension. Therefore our construction shows the impossibility of obtaining non-trivial lower bounds on martingale dimension in terms of spectral dimension which is in contrast with upper bounds on martingale dimension using spectral dimension obtained by Hino (Probab Theory Relat Fields 2013).

Gradient estimates of the heat kernel for random walks among time-dependent random conductances

Abstract:In this paper we consider a time-continuous random walk in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in a dynamical random environment with symmetric jump rates to nearest neighbours. We assume that these random conductances are stationary and ergodic and, moreover, that they are bounded from below but unbounded from above with finite first moment. We derive sharp on-diagonal estimates for the annealed first and second discrete space derivative of the heat kernel which then yield local limit theorems for the corresponding kernels. Assuming weak algebraic off-diagonal estimates, we then extend these results to the annealed Green function and its first and second derivative. Our proof which extends the result of Delmotte and Deuschel (2005) to unbounded conductances with first moment only, is an adaptation of the recent entropy method of Benjamini et. al. (2015).

Random walkers in one-dimensional random environments: exact renormalization group analysis

Abstract:Sinai's model of diffusion in one dimension with random local bias is studied by a real space renormalization group, which yields exact results at long times. The effects of an additional small uniform bias force are also studied. We obtain analytically the scaling form of the distribution of the position x(t) of a particle, the probability of it not returning to the origin, and the distributions of first passage times, in an infinite sample as well as in the presence of a boundary and in a finite but large sample. We compute the distribution of the meeting time of two particles in the same environment. We also obtain a detailed analytic description of the thermally averaged trajectories by computing quantities such as the joint distribution of the number of returns and of the number of jumps forward. These quantities obey multifractal scaling, characterized by generalized persistence exponents theta(g) which we compute. In the presence of a small bias, the number of returns to the origin becomes finite, characterized by a universal scaling function which we obtain. The full statistics of the distribution of successive times of return of thermally averaged trajectories is obtained, as well as detailed analytical information about correlations between directions and times of successive jumps. The two-time distribution of the positions of a particle, x(t) and x(t') with t>t', is also computed exactly. It is found to exhibit "aging" with several time regimes characterized by different behaviors. In the unbiased case, for t-t' approximately t'alpha with alpha>1, it exhibits a ln t/ln t' scaling, with a singularity at coinciding rescaled positions x(t)=x(t'). This singularity is a novel feature, and corresponds to particles that remain in a renormalized valley. For closer times alpha<1, the two-time diffusion front exhibits a quasiequilibrium regime with a ln(t-t')/ln t' behavior which we compute. The crossover to a t/t' aging form in the presence of a small bias is also obtained analytically. Rare events corresponding to intermittent splitting of the thermal packet between separated wells which dominate some averaged observables are also characterized in detail. Connections with the Green function of a one-dimensional Schrödinger problem and quantum spin chains are discussed.
Dating a random walk: Statistics of the duration time of a random walk given its present position

Abstract:We consider the distribution of the duration time, the time elapsed since it began, of a diffusion process given its present position, under the assumption that the process began at the origin. For unbiased diffusion, the distribution does not exist (it is identically zero) for one and two dimensional systems. We find the explicit expression for the distribution for three and higher dimensions and discuss the behavior of the duration time statistics: we find that the expected duration time exists only for dimensions five and higher, whereas the variance becomes finite for seven dimensions and above. We then turn to the case of biased diffusion. The drift velocity introduces a new time scale and the resulting statistics arise from the interplay of the diffusive time scale and the drift time scale. For these systems all the moments exist and explicit expressions are presented and discussed for the expected duration time and its variance for all dimensions.

Equilibrium with coordinate dependent diffusion: Comparison of different stochastic processes

Abstract:We show that, simultaneous local scaling of coordinate and time keeping the velocity unaltered is a symmetry of an Itô-process. Using this symmetry, any Itô-process can be mapped to a universal additive Gaussian-noise form. We use this mapping to separate the canonical and micro-canonical part of stochastic dynamics of a Brownian particle undergoing coordinate dependent diffusion. We identify the equilibrium distribution of the system and associated entropy induced by coordinate dependence of diffusion. Equilibrium physics of such a Brownian particle in a heat-bath of constant temperature is that of an Itô-process.

Abstract:Abstract We consider anomalous stochastic processes based on the renewal continuous time random walk model with different forms for the probability density of waiting times between individual jumps. In the corresponding continuum limit we derive the generalized diffusion and Fokker-Planck- Smoluchowski equations with the corresponding memory kernels. We calculate the qth order moments in the unbiased and biased cases, and demonstrate that the generalized Einstein relation for the considered dynamics remains valid. The relaxation of modes in the case of an external harmonic potential and the convergence of the mean squared displacement to the thermal plateau are analyzed.

Abstract:Statistics of classical Hamiltonian random walk of particle colliding with atoms of ideal gas is considered from viewpoint of earlier suggested exact pseudo-quantum path integral representation of the problem, and qualitative agreement is demostrated between results of an naturally arising simple approximation of this integral and results obtained by formally different methods, thus in a new fashion showing inevitability of scaleless 1/f-type fluctuations in rates of molecular Brownian motions and other dynamical transport and evolution processes.

Random walks in correlated diffusivity landscapes

Abstract:In recent years, several experiments highlighted a new type of diffusion anomaly, which was called Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion. In systems displaying this behavior, the mean squared displacement of the diffusing particles grows linearly in time, like in a normal diffusion, but the distribution of displacements is non-Gaussian. In situations when the convergence to Gaussian still takes place at longer times, the probability density of the displacements may show a persisting peak around the distribution's mode, and the pathway of convergence to the Gaussian is unusual. One of the theoretical models showing such a behavior corresponds to a disordered system with local diffusion coefficients slowly varying in space. While the standard pathway to Gaussian, as proposed by the Central Limit Theorem, would assume that the peak, under the corresponding rescaling, smoothens and lowers in course of the time; in the model discussed, the peak, under rescaling, narrows and stays sharp. In the present work, we discuss the nature of this peak. On a coarse-grained level, the motion of the particles in the diffusivity landscape is described by continuous time random walks with correlations between waiting times and positions. The peak is due to strong spatiotemporal correlations along the trajectories of diffusing particles. Destroying these correlations while keeping the temporal structure of the process intact leads to the decay of the peak. We also note that the correlated CTRW model reproducing serial correlations between the waiting times along the trajectory fails to quantitatively reproduce the shape of the peak even for the decorrelated motion, while being quite accurate in the wings of the PDF. This shows the importance of high-order temporal correlations for the peak's formation.

Rearranged Stochastic Heat Equation: Ergodicity and Related Gradient Descent on ${\mathcal P}({\mathbb R})$

Abstract:This article provides a case study for a recently introduced diffusion in the space of probability measures over the reals, namely rearranged stochastic heat, which solves a stochastic partial differential equation valued in the set of symmetrised quantile functions over the unit circle. This contribution studies probability measure-valued flows perturbed by this noise with a special focus on gradient flows. This is done by introducing a drift to the rearranged stochastic heat equation by means of a vector field from the set of random variables over the unit circle into itself. When the flow is a gradient flow, the vector field may coincide with the Wasserstein derivative of a mean-field potential function. The resulting equation reads as a sort of McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equation with an infinite dimensional common noise. This article provides conditions on the drift under which solutions exist uniquely for any time horizon and converge exponentially fast towards a unique equilibrium. When the drift derives from a potential, some metastability properties are obtained as the intensity of the noise is tuned to zero: it is shown that under a particular scaling regime, the gradient descent lingers near local minimizers for expected times of the same order as in the finite dimensional setting.

Combinatorics for calculating expectation values of functions in systems with evolution governed by stochastic differential equations

Abstract:Stochastic differential equations are widely used in various fields; in particular, the usefulness of duality relations has been demonstrated in some models such as population models and Brownian momentum processes. In this study, a discussion based on combinatorics is made and applied to calculate the expectation values of functions in systems in which evolution is governed by stochastic differential equations. Starting with the duality theory of stochastic processes, some modifications to the interpretation and usage of time-ordering operators naturally lead to discussions on combinatorics. For demonstration, the first and second moments of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process are re-derived from the discussion on combinatorics. Furthermore, two numerical methods for practical applications are proposed. One method is based on a conventional exponential expansion and the Pade approximation. The other uses a resolvent of a time-evolution operator, along with the application of the Aitken series acceleration method. Both methods yield reasonable approximations. Particularly, the resolvent and Aitken acceleration show satisfactory results. These findings will provide a new way of calculating expectations numerically and directly without using time-discretization.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamics of a correlated continuous time random walk with time averaged waiting time. The mean square displacement (MSD) shows this process is subdiffusive and generalized Einstein relation holds. We also get the asymptotic behavior of the probability density function (PDF) of this process is stretched Gaussian. At last, by computing the time averaged MSD, we find ergodicity breaking occurs in this process.

Langevin dynamics simulations at multiple temperatures are carried out to obtain the diffusion coefficient of a solute particle. Friction is varied from zero to large values. Diffusive motion emerges in the limit of a long time, even in the absence of noise. Noise destroys the correlations and increases diffusion at small friction. Diffusion thus exhibits a nonmonotonic friction dependence at the intermediate value of the damping, ultimately converging to our theoretically predicted value. The latter is obtained using the well-established relationship between diffusion and random walk. An excellent agreement is obtained between theory and simulations in the high-friction limit but not so in the intermediate regime. We explain the deviation in the low- to intermediate-friction regime using the modified random walk theory. The rate of escape from one cell to another is obtained from the multidimensional rate theory of Langer. We find that enhanced dimensionality plays an important role. To quantify the effects of noise on the potential-imposed coherence on the trajectories, we calculate the Lyapunov exponent. At small friction values, the Lyapunov exponent mimics the friction dependence of the rate.
Time-fractional diffusion equations with randomness, and efficient numerical estimations of expected values

Abstract:In this work, we explore a time-fractional diffusion equation of order $\alpha \in (0,1)$ with a stochastic diffusivity parameter. We focus on efficient estimation of the expected values (considered as an infinite dimensional integral on the parametric space corresponding to the random coefficients) of linear functionals acting on the solution of our model problem. To estimate the expected value computationally, the infinite expansions of the random parameter need to be truncated. Then we approximate the high-dimensional integral over the random field using a high-order quasi-Monte Carlo method. This follows by approximating the deterministic solution over the space-time domain via a second-order accurate time-stepping scheme in combination with a spatial discretization by Galerkin finite elements. Under reasonable regularity assumptions on the given data, we show some regularity properties of the continuous solution and investigate the errors from estimating the expected value. We report on numerical experiments that complement the theoretical results.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">In this article, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the solution to a one-dimensional stochastic heat equation with random nonlinear term generated by a stationary, ergodic random field. We extend the well-known central limit theorem for finite-dimensional diffusions in random environment to this infinite-dimensional setting. Due to our result, a central limit theorem in <span class="a-plus-plus inline-equation id-i-eq1"> <span class="a-plus-plus equation-source format-t-e-x">$L^1$</span> </span> sense with respect to the randomness of the environment holds under a diffusive time scaling. The limit distribution is a centered Gaussian law whose covariance operator is explicitly described. The distribution concentrates only on the space of constant functions.</p>

Abstract:In this paper we study random walks on dynamical random environments in $1 + 1$ dimensions. Assuming that the environment is invariant under space-time shifts and fulfills a mild mixing hypothesis, we establish a law of large numbers and a concentration inequality around the asymptotic speed. The mixing hypothesis imposes a polynomial decay rate of covariances on the environment with sufficiently high exponent but does not impose uniform mixing. Examples of environments for which our methods apply include the contact process and Markovian environments with a positive spectral gap, such as the East model. For the East model we also obtain that the distinguished zero satisfies a Law of Large Numbers with strictly positive speed.

Doubly stochastic continuous time random walk

Abstract:Since its introduction, some sixty years ago, the Montroll-Weiss continuous time random walk has found numerous applications due its ease of use and ability to describe both regular and anomalous diffusion. Yet, despite its broad applicability and generality, the model cannot account for effects coming from random diffusivity fluctuations which have been observed in the motion of asset prices and molecules. To bridge this gap, we introduce a doubly stochastic version of the model in which waiting times between jumps are replaced with a fluctuating jump rate. We show that this newly added layer of randomness gives rise to a rich phenomenology while keeping the model fully tractable -- allowing us to explore general properties and illustrate them with examples. In particular, we show that the model presented herein provides an alternative pathway to Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion which has been observed and explained via diffusing diffusivity approaches.

To understand it in such a system, we carry out theory and simulations of a tagged particle moving on a two-dimensional periodic potential energy surface, both in the presence and absence of noise. Langevin dynamics simulations at multiple temperatures are carried out to obtain the diffusion coefficient of a solute particle. Friction is varied from zero to large values. Diffusive motion emerges in the limit of long times, even in the absence of noise, although the trajectory is found to remain correlated over a long time. This correlation is manifested in correlated returns to the starting minima following a scattering by surrounding maxima. Noise destroys this correlation, induces chaos, and increases diffusion at small friction. Diffusion thus exhibits a non-monotonic friction dependence at the intermediate value of the damping, ultimately converging to our theoretically predicted value. The latter is obtained by using the well-established relation between diffusion and random walk. An excellent agreement is obtained between theory and simulations in the high friction limit, but not so in the intermediate regime. Abstract:Anomalous diffusive behaviors are observed in highly inhomogeneous but relatively stable environments such as intracellular media and are increasingly attracting attention. In this paper we develop a coupled continuous-time random walk model in which the waiting time is power-law coupled with the local environmental diffusion coefficient. We provide two forms of the waiting time density, namely, a heavy-tailed density and an exponential density. For different waiting time densities, anomalous diffusions with the diffusion exponent between 0 and 2 and Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion can be realized within the present model. The diffusive behaviors are analyzed and discussed by deriving the mean-squared displacement and probability density function. In addition we derive the effective jump length density corresponding to the decoupled form to help distinguish the diffusion types. Our model unifies two kinds of anomalous diffusive behavior with different characteristics in the same inhomogeneous environment into a theoretical framework. Lévy-walk-like Langevin dynamics with random parameters

Abstract:Anomalous diffusion phenomena have been widely found in systems within an inhomogeneous complex environment. For Lévy walk in an inhomogeneous complex environment, we characterize the particle’s trajectory through an underdamped Langevin system coupled with a subordinator. The influence of the inhomogeneous environment on the particle’s motion is parameterized by the random system parameters, relaxation timescale τ, and velocity diffusivity σ. We find that the two random parameters make different effects on the original superdiffusion behavior of the Lévy walk. The random σ contributes to a trivial result after an ensemble average, which is independent of the specific distribution of σ. By contrast, we find that a specific distribution of τ, a modified Lévy distribution with a finite mean, slows down the decaying rate of the velocity correlation function with respect to the lag time. However, the random τ does not promote the diffusion behavior in a direct way, but plays a competition role to the superdiffusion of the original Lévy walk. In addition, the effect of the random τ is also related to the specific subordinator in the coupled Langevin model, which corresponds to the distribution of the flight time of the Lévy walk. The random system parameters are capable of leading to novel dynamics, which needs detailed analyses, rather than an intuitive judgment, especially in complex systems.
