Abstract:A well-rounded introduction to work in a STEM laboratory is vital to scientific education. Besides the ability to use available instrumentation for sample characterization, students should also be imparted knowledge in the steps of instrument development and construction. These concepts can be taught using the example of lipid vesicle preparation via extrusion. Vesicle extrusion is a common technique that involves syringes pushing solutions through membrane filters and is used in fundamental studies on vesicles. Such research is important to better understand of biological phenomena and drug development. Well prepared samples are key to successful research. While the manual approach is very useful to acquire experience, automatic extrusion is more convenient, and automation often results in better reproducibility. These advantages can be combined in a simplistic automatic extruder, that does not require advanced technical skills to be assembled. It can therefore be used by various groups, ranging undergraduate to graduate students using equipment typically available. Using this approach, students can acquire different skillsets including coding, testing, and advanced use of building materials based on their properties. Finally, the quality of the automatic extruder is verified.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to improve the efficiency and reproducibility of liposome (such as lipid vesicles) preparation in a chemical laboratory by constructing a simple automatic extruder. Specifically: 1. **Limitations of Manual Extrusion**: Although manual extrusion helps students gain practical experience, the process is time - consuming, monotonous and prone to fatigue, which limits its application in large - scale research. 2. **Deficiencies of Existing Automatic Extruders**: Existing automatic extruders are usually expensive, structurally complex, and may require specialized technical knowledge or equipment, all of which limit their wide application in teaching and research. 3. **Requirement for a Simple Automatic Extruder**: To overcome the above problems, the paper proposes a simple automatic extruder constructed using common laboratory equipment. This extruder is not only low - cost but also easy to assemble and operate, suitable for students at different levels. 4. **Software Support**: The paper also develops a free software based on LabVIEW to support the operation of the automatic extruder. This software has a graphical user interface, which is convenient for students to learn and use. By solving these problems, the paper aims to provide an economical and efficient solution, enabling students to better understand and master the liposome preparation method in the experiment, while improving the reproducibility and efficiency of the experiment.
