Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.

Abstract:We prove Juhl type formulas for the curved Ovsienko--Redou operators and their linear analogues, which indicate the associated formal self-adjointness, thereby confirming two conjectures of Case, Lin, and Yuan. We also offer an extension of Juhl's original formula for the GJMS operators.

Abstract:We enlarge the class of regular odd order differential operators and find the self-adjoint boundary condition of every operator. In this paper, we give the characterization of self-adjoint domains for regular odd order C -symmetric differential operators with two-point boundary conditions. The previously known characterization of self-adjoint operators for regular odd order symmetric differential operators is the special case of this one.

Abstract:We consider deformations of unbounded operators by using the novel construction tool of warped convolutions. By using the Kato-Rellich theorem we show that unbounded self-adjoint deformed operators are self-adjoint if they satisfy a certain condition. This condition proves itself to be necessary for the oscillatory integral to be well-defined. Moreover, different proofs are given for self-adjointness of deformed unbounded operators in the context of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory.

Abstract:We study the self-adjointness of the two-dimensional Dirac operator coupled with electrostatic and Lorentz scalar shell interactions of constant strength $\varepsilon$ and $\mu$ supported on a closed Lipschitz curve. Namely, we present several new explicit ranges of $\varepsilon$ and $\mu$ for which there is a unique self-adjoint realization with domain included into $H^{\frac{1}{2}}$. A more precise analysis is carried out for curvilinear polygons, which allows one to take the corner openings into account. Compared to the preceding works on this topic, two new technical ingredients are employed: the explicit use of the Cauchy transform on non-smooth curves and the explicit characterization of the Fredholmness for singular integral operators.

A simple criterion for essential self-adjointness of Weyl pseudodifferential operators

Abstract:We prove new criteria for essential self-adjointness of pseudodifferential operators which do not involve ellipticity type assumptions. For example, we show that self-adjointness holds in case that the symbol is $C^{2d+3}$ with derivatives of order two and higher being uniformly bounded. These results also apply to hermitian operator-valued symbols on infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces which are important to applications in physics. Our method relies on a phase space differential calculus for quadratic forms on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, Calderón-Vaillancourt type theorems and a recent self-adjointness result for Toeplitz operators on the Segal-Bargmann space.

Abstract:Distinguished selfadjoint extensions of operators which are not semibounded can be deduced from the positivity of the Schur Complement (as a quadratic form). In practical applications this amounts to proving a Hardy-like inequality. Particular cases are Dirac-Coulomb operators where distinguished selfadjoint extensions are obtained for the optimal range of coupling constants.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the stability of self-adjointness of linear relations under perturbations in Hilbert spaces. It is shown that a self-adjoint relation is still self-adjoint under bounded and relatively bounded perturbations. The results obtained in the present paper generalize the corresponding results for linear operators to linear relations, and some weaken the conditions of the related existing results.

Abstract:The notion of a generic curved noncommutative torus is considered, which extends the notion of a conformally deformed noncommutative torus introduced by Connes and Tretkoff. For this manifold, an asymptotic expansion is established for the heat semigroup generated by the Laplace–Beltrami operator (in fact, for an arbitrary selfadjoint positive elliptic differential operator of order 2 2 ) and an algorithm is provided to compute the local invariants that arize as the coefficients in the expansion. This allows one to extend a series of previous results by several authors beyond the conformal case and/or for multidimensional tori.

Abstract:SIAM Review, Volume 66, Issue 1, Page 125-146, February 2024. We analyze the spectrum of the operator subject to homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, where denotes the Laplacian and is a symmetric tensor. Our main result shows that this spectrum can be derived from the spectral decomposition , where is an orthogonal matrix and is a diagonal matrix. More precisely, provided that is continuous, the spectrum equals the convex hull of the ranges of the diagonal function entries of . The domain involved is assumed to be bounded and Lipschitz. In addition to studying operators defined on infinite-dimensional Sobolev spaces, we also report on recent results concerning their discretized finite-dimensional counterparts. More specifically, even though is not compact, it turns out that every point in the spectrum of this operator can, to an arbitrary accuracy, be approximated by eigenvalues of the associated generalized algebraic eigenvalue problems arising from discretizations. Our theoretical investigations are illuminated by numerical experiments. The results presented in this paper extend previous analyses which have addressed elliptic differential operators with scalar coefficient functions. Our investigation is motivated by both preconditioning issues (efficient numerical computations) and the need to further develop the spectral theory of second order PDEs (core analysis).

Relative eta invariant and uniformly positive scalar curvature on non-compact manifolds

Abstract:On complete non-compact manifolds with bounded sectional curvature, we consider a class of self-adjoint Dirac-type operators called Dirac-Schrödinger operators. Assuming two Dirac-Schrödinger operators coincide at infinity, by previous work, one can define their relative eta invariant. A typical example of Dirac-Schrödinger operators is the (twisted) spin Dirac operators on spin manifolds which admit a Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature. In this case, using the relative eta invariant, we get a geometric formula for the spectral flow on non-compact manifolds, which induces a new proof of Gromov-Lawson's result about compact area enlargeable manifolds in odd dimensions. When two such spin Dirac operators are the boundary restriction of an operator on a manifold with non-compact boundary, under certain conditions, we obtain an index formula involving the relative eta invariant. This generalizes the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem to non-compact boundary situation. As a result, we can use the relative eta invariant to study the space of uniformly positive scalar curvature metrics on some non-compact connected sums.

Partially adjoint discretizations of adjoint operators and nonconforming finite element exterior calculus

Abstract:This paper concerns the discretizations in pair of adjoint operators between Hilbert spaces so that the adjoint properties can be preserved. Due to the finite-dimensional essence of discretized operators, a new framework, theory of partially adjoint operators, is motivated and presented in this paper, so that adjoint properties can be figured out for finite-dimensional operators which can not be non-trivially densely defined in other background spaces. A formal methodology is presented under the framework to construct partially adjoint discretizations by a conforming discretization (CD) and an accompanied-by-conforming discretization (ABCD) for each of the operators. Moreover, the methodology leads to an asymptotic uniformity of an infinite family of finite-dimensional operators. The validities of the theoretical framework and the formal construction of discretizations are illustrated by a systematic family of in-pair discretizations of the adjoint exterior differential operators. The adjoint properties concerned in the paper are the closed range theorem and the strong dualities, whose preservations have not been well studied yet. Quantified versions of the closed range theorem are established for both adjoint operators and partially adjoint discretizations. The notion Poincare-Alexander-Lefschetz (P-A-L for short) type duality is borrowed for operator theory, and horizontal and vertical P-A-L dualities are figured out for adjoint operators and their analogues are established for partially adjoint discretizations. Particularly by partially adjoint discretizations of exterior differential operators, the Poincare-Lefschetz duality is preserved as an identity, which was not yet obtained before.

Abstract:We consider a conformally invariant constrained variational problem on p differential forms for p<dimM−22 coming from conformal geometry and the associated Yamabe-type system of partial differential equations. It is shown that the infimum λp(M) of the functional is not bigger than λp(Rn) and if λp(M)<λp(Rn), then λp(M) is achieved by a C2+ϵp-form for some ϵ>0.
Nonnegative extensions of Sturm-Liouville operators with an application to problems with symmetric coefficient functions

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study nonnegative self-adjoint extensions associated with singular Sturm-Liouville expressions with strictly positive minimal operators. We provide a full characterization of all possible nonnegative self-adjoint extensions of the minimal operator in terms of generalized boundary values, as well as a parameterization of all nonnegative extensions when fixing a boundary condition at one endpoint. In addition, we investigate problems where the coefficient functions are symmetric about the midpoint of a finite interval, illustrating how every self-adjoint operator of this form is unitarily equivalent to the direct sum of two self-adjoint operators restricted to half of the interval. We also extend these result to symmetric two interval problems. We then apply our previous results to parameterize all nonnegative extensions of operators with symmetric coefficient functions. We end with an example of an operator with a symmetric Bessel-type potential (i.e., symmetric confining potential) and an application to integral inequalities.

Conformal Invariance of Clifford Monogenic Functions in the Indefinite Signature Case

Abstract:We extend constructions of classical Clifford analysis to the case of indefinite non-degenerate quadratic forms. Clifford analogues of complex holomorphic functions - called monogenic functions - are defined by means of the Dirac operators that factor a certain wave operator. One of the fundamental features of quaternionic analysis is the invariance of quaternionic analogues of holomorphic function under conformal (or Mobius) transformations. A similar invariance property is known to hold in the context of Clifford algebras associated to positive definite quadratic forms. We generalize these results to the case of Clifford algebras associated to all non-degenerate quadratic forms. This result puts the indefinite signature case on the same footing as the classical positive definite case.

Abstract:The Grushin plane serves as one of the simplest examples of a sub-Riemannian manifold whose distribution is of non-constant rank. Despite the fact that the singular set where this distribution drops rank is itself a smoothly embedded submanifold, many basic results in the spectral theory of differential operators associated to this geometry remain open, with the question of characterizing self-adjoint extensions being a recent question of interest both in sub-Riemannian geometry and mathematical physics. In order to systematically address these questions, we introduce an exotic calculus of pseudodifferential operators adapted to the geometry of the singularity, closely related to the 0-calculus of Mazzeo arising in asymptotically hyperbolic geometry. Extending results of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2011.03300" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2011.03300">arXiv:2011.03300</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1105.4687" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1105.4687">arXiv:1105.4687</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1609.01724" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1609.01724">arXiv:1609.01724</a>, this calculus allows us to give criterion for essential self-adjointness of the Curvature Laplacian, $\Delta-cS$ for $c>0$ (here $S$ is the scalar curvature). When this operator is not essentially self-adjoint, we determine several natural self-adjoint extensions. Our results generalize to a broad class of differential operators which are elliptic in this calculus.

Abstract:The general concept of nonlinear self-adjointness of differential equations is introduced. It includes the linear self-adjointness as a particular case. Moreover, it embraces the previous notions of self-adjoint and quasi self-adjoint nonlinear equations. The class of nonlinearly self-adjoint equations includes, in particular, all linear equations. Conservation laws associated with symmetries can be constructed for all nonlinearly self-adjoint differential equations and systems. The number of equations in systems can be different from the number of dependent variables.

Abstract:Drawing on work of Berndtsson and of Lempert and Szőke, we define a kind of complex analytic structure for families of (possibly finite-dimensional) Hilbert spaces that might not fit together to form a holomorphic vector bundle but nevertheless have a reasonable definition of curvature that agrees with the curvature of the Chern connection when the family of Hilbert spaces is locally trivial. We thus obtain a new proof of a celebrated theorem of Berndtsson on the curvature of direct images of semi-positively twisted relative canonical bundles (i.e., adjoint bundles), and of its higher-rank generalization due to Liu and Yang.
