What is "quantum" about quantum gravity?

Abstract:Assuming the validity of the equivalence principle in the quantum regime, we argue that one of the assumptions of the usual definition of quantum mechanics, namely separation between the ``classical'' detector and the ``quantum'' system, must be relaxed. We argue, therefore, that if both the equivalence principle and quantum mechanics continue to survive experimental tests, that this favors ``epistemic'' interpretations of quantum mechanics (where formalism is built around relations between observables) over ``ontic ones'' (assuming the reality of states and wavefunctions). In particular, we show that relational type interpretations can readily accomodate the equivalence principle via a minor modification of the assumptions used to justify the formalism.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper explores the core issue in quantum gravity, that is, how to reasonably handle gravitational phenomena within the framework of quantum mechanics. Specifically, the paper focuses on the conflict between the equivalence principle and the basic assumptions of quantum mechanics when quantum effects are considered. The author believes that if the equivalence principle is still valid on the quantum scale, then the assumption in traditional quantum mechanics about the separation of classical detectors and quantum systems must be relaxed. This means that the formalism of quantum mechanics needs to be re - examined, and in particular, interpretations based on the relationships between observables (such as relational interpretations) may be more appropriate than those based on the reality of states and wave functions. ### Main problems The main problems that the paper attempts to solve are: 1. **Compatibility between the equivalence principle and quantum mechanics**: How to maintain the validity of the equivalence principle in quantum mechanics, especially when dealing with gravity. 2. **Separation of detectors and systems**: Traditional quantum mechanics assumes the existence of a completely classical detector and a completely quantum system, but in the context of quantum gravity, this separation no longer holds. 3. **Re - evaluation of the quantum formalism**: On the premise that the equivalence principle is valid, how to modify the formalism of quantum mechanics so that it can accommodate gravitational effects. ### Key points - **Quantization of the equivalence principle**: The paper points out that if the equivalence principle is still valid on the quantum scale, then quantum mechanics needs to be fundamentally modified, especially when dealing with the concepts of space and time. - **Relational interpretation**: The author supports the relational interpretation, that is, quantum states and wave functions are just mathematical tools for describing knowledge, not objectively existing physical entities. This interpretation can better meet the requirements of the equivalence principle. - **Experimental verification**: The paper discusses some experimental schemes, such as the double - interferometer experiment, which can be used to test the validity of the equivalence principle on the quantum scale and verify the predictions of quantum gravity theories. ### Formulas Some of the key formulas involved in the paper include: 1. **Quantum uncertainty relation**: \[ \langle \sqrt{(\Delta A)^2 (\Delta B)^2} \rangle \geq \frac{1}{2} \left| \langle [\hat{A}, \hat{B}] \rangle \right| \] 2. **Uncertainty of momentum**: \[ \langle (\Delta P)^2 \rangle \sim \langle (\Delta P)^2 \rangle_{\text{quantum}} \sim \langle (\Delta x)^{-2} \rangle \langle [\hat{P}, \hat{x}] \rangle + Q (\Delta x)^2 + Q M (\Delta x)^3 \] 3. **Relationship of probability matrices**: \[ p_{ij} \equiv p(\hat{O}_i^1 | \hat{O}_j) = |U_{ij}|^2, \quad U_{ij} U^+_{jk} = \delta_{ik} \] 4. **Unitary matrix under coordinate transformation**: \[ U_{a,b} \rightarrow U^f_{a,b}, \quad U^f_{a,b} = F^+_{b,c} U^{f'}_{c,d} F_{d,b} \] Through these formulas and concepts, the paper attempts to construct a theoretical framework that can both satisfy the equivalence principle and handle quantum effects.
