Abstract:This paper is the first in a series devoted to the development of a Hodge theory for tropical varieties. We introduce a notion of T-stability for tropical fans and prove that various geometric properties of tropical fans are T-stable. As a consequence, we establish Kähler properties for the Chow ring in a large class of tropical fans, going beyond the case of matroids and their Bergman fans. As a by-product, we obtain a new proof of the Kähler package for combinatorial geometries. The approach makes it possible to deal with tropical fans with general weights.

Abstract:In a previous work, we stated the conjecture that any semiring homomorphism between the Boolean function semirings on 1-dimensional tropical fans has the property called geometric. In this paper, we show that the conjecture is true. As an application, we establish a way to find all the morphisms between given 1-dimensional tropical fans.

Abstract:We prove that the Chow ring of any simplicial fan is isomorphic to the middle degree part of the tropical cohomology ring of its canonical compactification. Using this result, we prove a tropical analogue of Kleiman's criterion of ampleness for fans.

Abstract:Given the tropicalization of a complex subvariety of the torus, we define a morphism between the tropical cohomology and the rational cohomology of their respective tropical compactifications. We say that the subvariety of the torus is cohomologically tropical if this map is an isomorphism for all closed strata of the tropical compactification. We prove that a schön subvariety of the torus is cohomologically tropical if and only if it is wunderschön and its tropicalization is a tropical homology manifold. The former property means that the open strata in the boundary of a tropical compactification are all connected and the mixed Hodge structures on their cohomology are pure of maximum possible weight; the latter property requires that, locally, the tropicalization verifies tropical Poincaré duality. We study other properties of cohomologically tropical and wunderschön varieties, and show that in a semistable degeneration to an arrangement of cohomologically tropical varieties, the Hodge numbers of the smooth fibers are captured in the tropical cohomology of the tropicalization. This extends the results of Itenberg, Katzarkov, Mikhalkin, and Zharkov.

Abstract:In 1982, Demailly showed that the Hodge conjecture follows from the statement that all positive closed currents with rational cohomology class can be approximated by positive linear combinations of integration currents. Moreover, in 2012, he showed that the Hodge conjecture is equivalent to the statement that any (p,p)-dimensional closed current with rational cohomology class can be approximated by linear combinations of integration currents. In this article, we find a current which does not verify the former statement on a smooth projective variety for which the Hodge conjecture is known to hold. To construct this current, we extend the framework of “tropical currents”—recently introduced by the first author—from tori to toric varieties. We discuss extremality properties of tropical currents and show that the cohomology class of a tropical current is the recession of its underlying tropical variety. The counterexample is obtained from a tropical surface in R4 whose intersection form does not have the right signature in terms of the Hodge index theorem.

Abstract:Ducros, Hrushovski, and Loeser gave maps from families of archimedean diffrential forms to non-archiemedean (or tropical) ones, which are compatible with integrals on algebraic varieties. In this paper, we introduce slight modifications of their maps for complex projective varieties which give natural maps from tropical to the usual Dolbeault cohomology. We also show that our maps are compatible with integrals on generic semi-algebraic subsets and those on their weighted tropicalizations. Weighted tropicalizations induce the dual maps of the above maps of Dolbeault cohomology groups under some assumptions.

Realizability in tropical geometry and unobstructedness of Lagrangian submanifolds

Abstract:We say that a tropical subvariety $V\subset \mathbb R^n$ is $B$-realizable if it can be lifted to an analytic subset of $(\Lambda^*)^n$. When $V$ is a smooth curve or hypersurface, there always exists a Lagrangian submanifold lift $L_V\subset (\mathbb C^*)^n$. We prove that whenever $L_V$ has well-defined Floer cohomology, we can find for each point of $V$ a Lagrangian torus brane whose Lagrangian intersection Floer cohomology with $L_V$ is non-vanishing. Assuming an appropriate homological mirror symmetry result holds for toric varieties, it follows that whenever $L_V$ is a Lagrangian submanifold that can be made unobstructed by a bounding cochain, the tropical subvariety $V$ is $B$-realizable. As an application, we show that the Lagrangian lift of a genus zero tropical curve is unobstructed, thereby giving a purely symplectic argument for Nishinou and Siebert's proof that genus-zero tropical curves are $B$-realizable. We also prove that tropical curves inside tropical abelian surfaces are $B$-realizable.

Abstract:The homogeneity degree of a topological space $X$ is the number of orbits of the action of the homeomorphism group of $X$ on $X$. We initiate a study of dendroids of small homogeneity degree, beginning with fans. We classify all smooth fans of homogeneity degree $3$, and discuss non-smooth fans and prove some results on degree $4$.

Abstract:To prove log-concavity of the characteristic polynomials of matroids, Adiprasito-Huh-Katz proved the Kähler package (the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations) for their Chow rings. Amini-Piquerez generalized it to tropical cohomology of smooth projective tropical varieties. Their proofs were combinatorial. In this paper, we establish tropical Hodge theory except for regularity of solutions of Laplacian, and give a conditional proof of the Kähler package in the same way as compact Kähler manifolds.

Abstract:In a first time we present a version of the Poincar{é}-Lefschetz theorem for certain cellular cosheaves on a particular subdivision of a CW-complex K. To that end we construct a cellular sheaf on K whose cohomology with compact support is isomorphic to the homology of the initial cosheaf. In a second time we use the first result to generalise the tropical version of the Lefschetz hyperplane section theorem to singular tropical toric varieties and singular tropical hypersurfaces.

Abstract:This article studies the relationship between tropical Severi varieties and secondary fans. In the case when tropical Severi varieties are hypersurfaces this relationship is very well known; specifically, in this case, a tropical Severi variety of codimension 1 is a subfan of the corresponding secondary fan. It was expected for some time that this continues to hold more generally, but Katz found a counterexample in codimension 2, showing that this relationship is more subtle. The two main results in this paper are as follows. The first theorem finds a simple condition under which a tropical Severi variety cannot be a subfan of the corresponding secondary fan. The second theorem provides a partial converse, namely, we find conditions under which a cone of the secondary fan is fully contained in the tropical Severi variety. As a first application of these results, we also find a combinatorial formula for the tropical intersection multiplicities for secondary fans.

Abstract:We consider the space of holomorphic maps from a compact Riemann surface to a projective space blown up at finitely many points. We show that the homology of this mapping space equals that of the space of continuous maps that intersect the exceptional divisors positively, once the degree of the maps is sufficiently positive compared to the degree of homology. The proof uses a version of Vassiliev's method of simplicial resolution. As a consequence, we obtain a homological stability result for rational curves on the degree $5$ del Pezzo surface, which is analogous to a case of the Batyrev--Manin conjectures on rational point counts.

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of rational graphically stable tropical curves and a refinement given by radial alignment. Given a complete multipartite graph $\Gamma$, the moduli space of radially aligned $\Gamma$-stable tropical curves can be given the structure of a balanced fan. This fan structure coincides with the Bergman fan of the cycle matroid of $\Gamma$.

Abstract:In this short note we show that the homotopy category of smooth compactifications of smooth algebraic varieties is equivalent to the homotopy category of smooth varieties over a field of characteristic zero. As an application we show that the functor sending a variety to the p-th step of the Hodge filtration of its complex cohomology is representable in the homotopy category of simplicial presheaves on smooth complex varieties. The main motivation are recent applications of homotopy theory to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology theories.

The tropical non-properness set of a polynomial map

Abstract:We study some discrete invariants of Newton non-degenerate polynomial maps $f : \mathbb{K}^n \to \mathbb{K}^n$ defined over an algebraically closed field of Puiseux series $\mathbb{K}$, equipped with a non-trivial valuation. It is known that the set $\mathcal{S}(f)$ of points at which $f$ is not finite forms an algebraic hypersurface in $\mathbb{K}^n$. The coordinate-wise valuation of $\mathcal{S}(f)\cap (\mathbb{K}^*)^n$ is a piecewise-linear object in $\mathbb{R}^n$, which we call the tropical non-properness set of $f$. We show that the tropical polynomial map corresponding to $f$ has fibers satisfying a particular combinatorial degeneracy condition exactly over points in the tropical non-properness set of $f$. We then use this description to outline a polyhedral method for computing this set, and to recover the fan dual to the Newton polytope of the set at which a complex polynomial map is not finite. The proofs rely on classical correspondence and structural results from tropical geometry, combined with a new description of $\mathcal{S}(f)$ in terms of multivariate resultants.

Combinatorics of Hurwitz degenerations and tropical realizability

Abstract:We investigate the realizability of balanced functions on tropical curves, establishing new sufficient criteria for superabundant functions on genus two curves, analogous to the well-spacedness condition in genus one. We find that realizability is sensitive to the precise locations of conjugate and Weierstrass points on the tropical curve. The key input is a combinatorial comparison of semistable limit theorems for maps of curves. Amini-Baker-Brugallé-Rabinoff previously showed that realizability of functions is equivalent to ``modifiability'' to a tropical admissible cover. The resulting criteria are typically inexplicit; we develop combinatorial techniques to derive explicit, verifiable criteria from these. We then develop a dimensional reduction technique to deduce statements about maps to $\mathbb{R}^r$ from ones about maps to $\mathbb{R}$. By proving directly that modifiability and well-spacedness are equivalent in genus one, we obtain a new proof that well-spaced maps are realizable. Along the way, we explain how the modifiability criterion can be viewed as a comparison result for properness statements for moduli of relative maps and admissible covers.

The Unipotent Tropical Fundamental Group

Abstract:We define the unipotent tropical fundamental group of a polyhedral complex in $\mathbb{R}^n$ as the Tannakian fundamental group of the category of unipotent tropical vector bundles with integrable connection. We show that it is computable in that it satisfies a Seifert--Van Kampen theorem and has a description for fans in terms of a bar complex. We then review an analogous classical object, the unipotent de Rham fundamental group of a schön subvariety of a toric variety. Our main result is a correspondence theorem between classical and tropical unipotent fundamental groups: there is an isomorphism between the unipotent completion of the fundamental group of a generic fiber of a tropically smooth family over a disc and the tropical unipotent fundamental group of the family's tropicalization. This theorem is established using Kato--Nakayama spaces and a descent argument. It requires a slight enlargement of the relevant categories, making use of enriched structures and partial compactifications.

Abstract:This article discusses a combinatorial extension of tropical intersection theory to spaces given by glueing quotients of partially open convex polyhedral cones by finitely many automorphisms. This extension is done in terms of linear poic-complexes and poic-fibrations, mainly motivated by the case of the moduli spaces of tropical curves of arbitrary genus and marking. We define tropical cycles of a linear poic-complex and of a poic-fibration, and discuss the pushforward maps in these situations. In the context of moduli spaces of tropical curves, we also discuss "clutching morphisms" and "forgetting the marking" morphisms. In a subsequent article we apply this framework to moduli spaces of discrete admissible covers and study the loci of tropical curves that appear as the source of a degree-$d$ discrete admissible cover of a genus-$h$ $m$-marked tropical curve, for fixed $d$, $h$ and $m$.
