Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a future ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy providing unparalleled sensitivity in the energy range from 20 GeV up to 300 TeV. CTA will consist of telescopes with three different sizes. The Medium-Sized Telescopes (MSTs) will have 12 m reflectors with a tessellated mirror design of 86 mirror facets each. Each mirror facet is mounted on the mirror support structure with two actuators that are adjustable in length to align the mirrors, and a freely rotating fixpoint. Image resolution and pointing accuracy constraints impose limits on the backlash and deformation of the actuators and the fixpoint under various weight and wind loads. In this contribution, the test stand to measure the backlash and deformation behaviour of actuators and fixpoints is described and the measurement procedure is explained.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the quality assurance problems of actuators and fixed points of the Medium - Sized Telescopes (MST) in the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Specifically, the research focuses on how to ensure that the backlash and deformation behaviors of actuators and fixed points under different weight and wind load conditions meet the design requirements, so as to meet the imaging resolution and pointing accuracy of the telescope. ### Main problems: 1. **Imaging resolution**: It is required that 80% of the light concentration diameter \( \Theta_{80\%} < 0.18^{\circ} \) within the 2.8 - degree range of the camera field of view center. 2. **Pointing accuracy**: The pointing accuracy is required to be less than 7 arc - seconds (<7″). ### Background: - CTA is a future ground - based gamma - ray observatory, covering an energy range from 20 GeV to 300 TeV. - MST is a part of CTA, with a 12 - meter - diameter reflector composed of 86 mirrors. Each mirror is installed on the support structure through two actuators with adjustable strokes and a freely rotating fixed point. - The precise adjustment of the mirror is crucial for the imaging resolution and pointing accuracy of the telescope. ### Solutions: To ensure the quality of actuators and fixed points, the author developed a test platform for measuring and quantifying the backlash as well as the elastic and plastic deformation behaviors of actuators and fixed points. The key components of the test platform include: - **Actuator Control Unit (ACU)**: Provides push - pull forces. - **Spring - slider system**: Ensures the linear transfer of forces. - **Force sensor**: Measures the applied force. - **Dial indicator**: Measures displacement. - **Test object**: Actuator or its components. ### Test methods: Measure the force - displacement diagram through discrete force steps to quantify the positioning inaccuracy of the test object. During the test, the maximum applied force is ±375N, which exceeds the maximum expected force in actual operation (±130N), in order to verify the effectiveness of the measurement procedure. ### Preliminary results: - The test results show that the ball joint introduces a repeatable, force - related hysteresis phenomenon, which affects the positioning accuracy of the entire actuator system. - The gimbal introduces backlash due to the movement at the interface. - The total, force - dependent deformation limits the non - repeatable positioning accuracy, not just the simple, force - independent backlash. ### Conclusions: Despite the great challenges, these errors can be reduced by improving the design, thereby improving the overall performance of MST actuators. The final MST actuator design is currently being improved and qualified. ### Formula explanations: The formulas involved in this paper are mainly the force - displacement relationships, for example: - Backlash: Represents the clearance between mechanical parts, usually denoted by the symbol \( B \). - Elastic deformation: Represents the reversible deformation of materials under the action of external forces, usually denoted by \( \Delta L_e \). - Plastic deformation: Represents the irreversible deformation of materials under the action of external forces, usually denoted by \( \Delta L_p \). These parameters are measured and analyzed through the force - displacement diagram.
