Abstract:With reducing the grain size into nanometer scale for polycrystalline materials, the influence of nonlocal interactions in grain boundaries on the mechanical properties of the material is reinforced as well as the interface energy stemming from the surfaces of grains is increased, resulting in that the mechanical properties of the polycrystalline represent size-dependence significantly. In this work, the influence of the interface energy and grain boundaries on the elastic properties of nanocrystalline materials is investigated in the framework of continuum mechanics. An analytical expression of the elastic modulus is addressed to describe the grain size effects on the Young’s modulus of nanocrystalline materials. The numerical results illustrate that the elastic modulus of nanocrystalline materials decreases with the reduction of the grain size to nanometer scale. The grain size effects become remarkable when the grain size lowers down to several tens nanometers, and the influence of the interface energy and grain boundary must be taken into account. The contribution of the density on the mechanical properties in nanocrystalline materials is analyzed by discussing the influence of the grain boundary thickness on the elastic modulus. The comparison between the proposed theoretical results and the present measurement shows that the proposed model can predict the experiments quite well.

Abstract:Reducing the grain size into nanometer scale for the polycrystalline, the mechanical properties associated with the grain size will, in general, represent size effects remarkably. With the decrement of grain size, the interface energy stemmed from the grain surface increase, and the gain-boundary influence on the mechanical properties of the materials also can be reinforced. In this paper, a framework is developed wit h considering the interface energy effects and grain-boundary effects with the aid of the continuum theory of mechanics to describe the grain-size effects on the elastic modulus of the nanocrystalline materials. Base on the numerical results, it is illustrated that the elastic modulus of nanocrystalline materials decreases with the reduction of the grain size in the scale of nanometer. In addition, compared with the present measurement, the proposed theoretical results can be agreeable well with the experimental results.

Abstract:Nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution, composed of coarse grains (CG) and nanograins regions, can have high strength and good ductility. Here, numerical simulations, based on the mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity, micromechanical composite model and the Johnson-Cook failure model, investigate effects of distribution characteristics and shape of the CG regions on fracture behavior of bimodal nanostructured metals. Simulations show that both of them directly influence load response, energy dissipation and fracture pattern. This study shows that both CG region bridging and crack deflection are main toughening mechanisms of the bimodal nanostructured metals.

Abstract:For the bulk polycrystalline materials, the size of microstructures such as the grain size shrinking to the nanometer scale will result in an apparent change of the physical and mechanical performance of materials, which are distinguished remarkably with the ones of coarse-grain polycrystalline materials. In order to understand the influence of grain size on the properties of polycrystalline materials completely, the theoretical models with the point of view of the microstructures are presented to analyze grain size effects on the phonon thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity and the elastic modulus. For the phonon thermal conductivity, the phonon transport in both the grain interior and grain-boundary are discussed by using the phonon radiative transfer equation, and the analytical expression of conductivity is addressed to describe the influence of grain size on the thermal properties of polycrystalline materials. The electron grain-boundary scattering in the polycrystalline materials is taken into account as the boundary conditions of electron transport in the grain interior, to investigate the grain size effect on electrical conductivity. The predictions of proposed models for the phonon thermal conductivity and the electrical conductivity can agree well with experimental results. For elastic properties of nanocrystalline materials, a framework based on the continuum theory of mechanics is developed by considering the interface energy effects and grain-boundary effects to describe grain-size effects on elastic modulus. Base on the numerical results, it is illustrated that the effects of interface energy and grain-boundary can not be considered for large grain size. When the grain size is under several tens nanometers, the grain-size effects are significant and the effects of interface energy and grain-boundary must be taken into account.

Abstract:Grain boundary (GB) mediated deformation is a vital contributor to the plasticity of polycrystalline ma-terials, where the disconnection model has become a widely recognized approach to depict the GB dy-namics. However, experimental understanding of the atomistic disconnection dynamics remains scarce. In this case study of gold nanocrystals, atomistic disconnection dynamics governing the shear-coupled migration of flat GBs have been systematically investigated via in situ transmission electron microscopy nanomechanical testing supported by molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, the site-dependent nucleation, shear-driven propagation, and diverse interactions associated with distinct GB disconnec-tions are systematically elucidated and quantitatively compared. Moreover, the disconnection-mediated GB plasticity proves to prevail among different tilt and mixed GBs in gold. Eventually, a conceptual map of disconnection-mediated GB dynamics is established, which would furnish a unified understanding of GB plasticity in metallic materials. Abstract:When the grain size is below a critical value, the deformation mechanism of nanocrystalline (NC) metal shifts from dislocation- to grain boundaries (GBs)-mediated activities. However, GB activities including deformation and rotation in the elastic and plastic stages have not given detailed analysis because of the limitation of current experimental techniques, as well as the unrealistic model with regular boundaries in most molecular dynamics (MD) simulation reducing the activities. To quantitatively analyze GB activities, we recently developed an algorithm based on moving least-squares interpolant. Besides, the phase field model was used to build the nanocrystalline (NC) Cu with more natural GBs for MD tensile simulation. The results of temperature dependence of Young's modulus (E), strain rate sensitivity (SRS), and variation of stress at GBs (σGB) and at grain interiors (σGI) are in good agreement with previous researches. In the elastic stage, the σGB fluctuates in a larger range than σGI. The vibrated σGB is the results of micro-elastic and micro-plastic deformation of GBs and the increased stage of σGB in one cycle can lead to increasing the σGI. Thus, the temperature dependence of E is affected by the frequency of vibrated σGB at relative low temperatures (T ≤ 450 K). The E is strain rate independent because of the same vibration of σGB. In the plastic stage, the flow stress strongly depends on the size of twinning boundaries (TBs) structures. The fraction of GB activities improves with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate. GB activities can attenuate stress concentration on boundaries and then results in the formation and growth mechanism of TB changing from Shockley partial dislocation gliding on adjacent plane of stacking faults (SFs) to GB deformation. Thus, the size of TB at low temperatures and high strain rate is larger than that at the opposite conditions.

Abstract:We develop a new Voronoi protocol, which is a space tessellation method, to generate fully dense (containing no voids) nanocrystalline models of copper (Cu) with precise grain size control; we also perform uniaxial tensile tests using molecular dynamical (MD) simulations to measure the elastic moduli of the grain boundary and the grain interior components at 300 K. We find that the grain boundary deforms more locally compared with the grain core region under thermal vibrations and is elastically less stiff than the core component at finite temperature. The elastic modulus of the grain boundary is lower than 30% of that of the grain interior. Our results will aid in the development of more accurate continuum models of nanocrystalline metals.

An Elastic–viscoplastic Model of Deformation in Nanocrystalline Metals Based on Coupled Mechanisms in Grain Boundaries and Grain Interiors

Abstract:An elastic-viscoplastic model based on coupled deformation mechanisms of grain-boundary sliding, grain-boundary diffusion, grain-interior diffusion and grain-interior plasticity is developed to investigate the mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline metals. Application of the model to nanocrystallme copper shows that overall plastic deformation from the coupled deformation mechanisms depends on both grain size and strain rate. A sharp strain-rate sensitivity transition occurs from about 0.01 to 1, as strain rates change to below 10(-6) s(-1) in nanocrystalline copper. Grain-boundary sliding and diffusion dominate inelastic deformation when the strain-rate sensitivity approaches 1. For grain sizes larger than a critical value about 15 nm, increasing slip resistance in grain interiors causes the strength to increase as the grain size is reduced. However, further reduction in grain sizes to below 15 nm results in softening in strength due to enhanced grain-boundary sliding and diffusion. Published by Elsevier B.V.
Coarse-graining microscopic strains in a harmonic, two-dimensional solid and its implications for elasticity: non-local susceptibilities and non-affine noise

Abstract:In soft matter systems the local displacement field can be accessed directly by video microscopy enabling one to compute local strain fields and hence the elastic moduli using a coarse-graining procedure. We study this process for a simple triangular lattice of particles connected by harmonic springs in two-dimensions. Coarse-graining local strains obtained from particle configurations in a Monte Carlo simulation generates non-trivial, non-local strain correlations (susceptibilities), which may be understood within a generalized, Landau type elastic Hamiltonian containing up to quartic terms in strain gradients (K. Franzrahe et al., Phys. Rev. E 78, 026106 (2008)). In order to demonstrate the versatility of the analysis of these correlations and to make our calculations directly relevant for experiments on colloidal solids, we systematically study various parameters such as the choice of statistical ensemble, presence of external pressure and boundary conditions. We show that special care needs to be taken for an accurate application of our results to actual experiments, where the analyzed area is embedded within a larger system, to which it is mechanically coupled. Apart from the smooth, affine strain fields, the coarse-graining procedure also gives rise to a noise field made up of non-affine displacements. Several properties of this noise field may be rationalized for the harmonic solid using a simple "cell model" calculation. Furthermore the scaling behavior of the probability distribution of the noise field is studied and a master curve is obtained.

Abstract:The modeling of the elastic properties of granular or nanoscale systems requires the foundations of the theory of elasticity to be revisited, as one explores scales at which this theory may no longer hold. The only cases for which a microscopic justification of elasticity exists are (nearly) uniformly strained lattices. A microscopic theory of elasticity, as well as simulations, reveal that standard continuum elasticity applies only at sufficiently large scales (typically 100 particle diameters). Interestingly, force chains, which have been observed in experiments on granular systems, and attributed to non-elastic effects, are shown to exist in systems composed of harmonically interacting constituents. The corresponding stress field, which is a continuum mechanical (averaged) entity, exhibits no chain structures even at near-microscopic resolutions, but it does reflect macroscopic anisotropy, when present.

Abstract:This paper develops a finite element-based model with quantized crystal plasticity (QCP) to study distinctive features of nanocrystalline (nc) metal behavior, including an enhanced flow stress, extended plastic transition strain and propensity for strain localization. The QCP feature is motivated by molecular dynamics simulations of dislocation loop propagation across nc grains, showing that the grain-averaged plastic strain jumps by discrete amounts. Further, a simple geometric analysis suggests that the magnitude of the jumps is ∼1/grain size, thereby incorporating a grain size effect. QCP simulations of 1000-grain polycrystals can reproduce the unique experimental stress–strain features of nc metals, but only if the probability density distribution for a slip event increases abruptly at a threshold stress ∼1/grain size. Possible explanations for such a unique signature are discussed in terms of dislocation loop expansion conditions that become important in the nc limit.

Locality and Non-locality in Elasto-plastic Responses of Amorphous Solids

Abstract:A number of current theories of plasticity in amorphous solids assume at their basis that plastic deformations are spatially localized. We present in this paper a series of numerical experiments to test the degree of locality of plastic deformation. These experiments increase in terms of the stringency of the removal of elastic contributions to the observed elasto-plastic deformations. It is concluded that for all our simulational protocols the plastic deformations are not localized, and their scaling is sub-extensive. We offer a number of measures of the magnitude of the plastic deformation, all of which display sub-extensive scaling characterized by non-trivial exponents. We provide some evidence that the scaling exponents governing the sub-extensive scaling laws are non-universal, depending on the degree of disorder and on the parameters of the systems. Nevertheless understanding what determines these exponents should shed considerable light on the physics of amorphous solids.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate strain localization in a model nanocrystalline metal. The atomic mechanisms of such catastrophic failure are first studied for two grain sizes of interest. Detailed analysis shows that the formation of a strain path across the sample width is crucial, and can be achieved entirely through grain boundary deformation or through a combination of grain boundary sliding and grain boundary dislocation emission. Pronounced mechanically-induced grain growth is also found within the strain localization region. The effects of testing conditions on strain localization are also highlighted, to understand the conditions that promote shear banding and compare these observations to metallic glass behavior. We observed that, while strain localization occurs at low temperatures and slow strain rates, a shift to more uniform plastic flow is observed when either strain rate or temperature is increased. We also explore how external sample dimensions influence strain localization, but find no size effect for the grain sizes and samples sizes studied here.

Abstract:Many properties of nanocrystalline materials are associated with interface effects. Based on their microstructural features, the influence of interfaces on the effective elastic property of nanocrystalline materials is investigated. First, the Mori-Tanaka method is employed to determine the overall effective elastic moduli by considering a nanocrystalline material as a binary composite solid consisting of a crystal or inclusion phase with regular lattice connected by an amorphous-like interface or matrix phase. The effects of strain gradients are then examined on the effective elastic property by using the strain gradient theory to analyze a representative unit cell. Two interface mechanisms are elucidated that influence the effective stiffness and other mechanical properties of materials. One is the softening effect due to the distorted atomic structures and the increased atomic spacings in interface regions, and the other is the baffling effect due to the existence of boundary layers near interfaces.

Abstract:The modeling of the elastic properties of disordered or nanoscale solids requires the foundations of the theory of elasticity to be revisited, as one explores scales at which this theory may no longer hold. The only cases for which microscopically based derivations of elasticity are documented are (nearly) uniformly strained lattices. A microscopic approach to elasticity is proposed. As a first step, microscopically exact expressions for the displacement, strain and stress fields are derived. Conditions under which linear elastic constitutive relations hold are studied theoretically and numerically. It turns out that standard continuum elasticity is not self-evident, and applies only above certain spatial scales, which depend on details of the considered system and boundary conditions. Possible relevance to granular materials is briefly discussed.

Abstract:A large change in yield strength and ductility takes place in metals with a recrystallized average grain size in the near-micrometer grain size regime. This has been utilized to explore the influence of grain size heterogeneity on plastic deformation for recrystallized grains in aluminum prepared by spark plasma sintering, where tailoring of the grain size distribution and spatial arrangement can be achieved by selecting powder sizes and mixing conditions prior to sintering. The spatial variation of plastic deformation has been explored by digital image correlation (DIC), either at the sample scale or at the grain scale. For the latter colloidal SiO2 markers also allow repeated collection of electron backscatter diffraction data over the same area during in-situ deformation, proving correlated information on local displacement gradients and crystal lattice rotations. For samples prepared from well-mixed powders only small deviations from a rule-of-mixtures in the yield strength are observed. A mesoscale pattern of strain distribution is observed from DIC investigations where this is related to, but not fully consistent with, the spatial arrangement of fine and coarse grains. In the case of macroscopically layered arrangements of coarse and fine grains, deformation is dominated by development of local strain concentrations, which take place preferentially in the fine grain regions.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline metals are defined as metals with an average grain size in the (1-100) nm range. Because of their potential applications in mechanics, thermodynamics, acoustics, electronics, and magnetics, etc, their manufacture and research have been an important frontier, both in materials science and the related fields. Their relative simple microstructures and characterizing parameters impose a fundamental meaning in theoretical studies. The three-dimensional topology of nanocrystalline metals is similar to their conventional counterparts. However, for the extremely small grain size, the volume fraction of grain boundaries increases greatly, which will lead to different mechanical properties from coarse-grained metals. Moreover, when the characterized lengths of the microscopic physical processes compare to the grain size, the related properties will be modulated and thus different from well-known ones. In this paper, we present some new developments of preparation, mechanical properties and plastic deformation mechanisms in nanocrystalline metals and discuss the relationships between microscopic structures and mechanical properties.
Atomistic and mean-field estimates of effective stiffness tensor of nanocrystalline materials of hexagonal symmetry

Abstract:Anisotropic core-shell model of a nano-grained polycrystal is extended to estimate the effective elastic stiffness of several metals of hexagonal crystal lattice symmetry. In the approach the bulk nanocrystalline material is described as a two-phase medium with different properties for a grain boundary zone and a grain core. While the grain core is anisotropic, the boundary zone is isotropic and has a thickness defined by the cutoff radius of a corresponding atomistic potential for the considered metal. The predictions of the proposed meanfield model are verified with respect to simulations performed with the use of the Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator, the Embedded Atom Model, and the molecular statics method. The effect of the grain size on the overall elastic moduli of nanocrystalline material with random distribution of orientations is analysed.

Abstract:It has been claimed that quasistatic granular materials, as well as nanoscale materials, exhibit departures from elasticity even at small loadings. It is demonstrated, using 2D and 3D models with interparticle harmonic interactions, that such departures are expected at small scales [below O(100) particle diameters], at which continuum elasticity is invalid, and vanish at large scales. The models exhibit force chains on small scales, and force and stress distributions which agree with experimental findings. Effects of anisotropy, disorder and boundary conditions are discussed as well.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline metals, i.e. metals with grain sizes from 5 to 50 nm, display technologically interesting properties, such as dramatically increased hardness, increasing with decreasing grain size. Due to the small grain size, direct atomic-scale simulations of plastic deformation of these materials are possible, as such a polycrystalline system can be modeled with the computational resources available today. We present molecular dynamics simulations of nanocrystalline copper with grain sizes up to 13 nm. Two different deformation mechanisms are active, one is deformation through the motion of dislocations, the other is sliding in the grain boundaries. At the grain sizes studied here the latter dominates, leading to a softening as the grain size is reduced. This implies that there is an ``optimal'' grain size, where the hardness is maximal. Since the grain boundaries participate actively in the deformation, it is interesting to study the effects of introducing impurity atoms in the grain boundaries. We study how silver atoms in the grain boundaries influence the mechanical properties of nanocrystalline copper.
