In an anisotropic resistivity context, we show global in time existence of small smooth solution near a shear type steady state. Convergence rate of the solution to the steady state is also obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of forward self-similar solutions to the three-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic equations (MHD equations) with arbitrarily large self-similar initial data. Using the so called blow-up argument, we establish the necessary a priori estimates. Subsequently, the Leray-Schauder theorem allows us to construct a global-time forward self-similar solutions of the MHD equations. Furthermore, we prove that this solution is smooth in $\R^{3}\times(0,\infty)$.

Abstract:Whether the smooth solution of the multi-dimensional viscous compressible fluids will blow-up in finite time has always been a chanllenging problem. In the recent work\cite{FM}, Merle et al. proved that there are smooth solutions to the 2D radially symmetric compressible Navier-Stokes equations which will inevitably form shell singularities in finite time.\\ \indent In this article, we first prove the existence of local strong solutions that allow vacuum for the two-dimensional viscous compressible MHD equations on bounded domains without magnetic diffusion. Furthermore, it is shown that if the initial data are radial symmetric and its vacuum set contains a ball centered at the origin where the total magnetic field is non-trivial, then the radial symmetric strong solution to the initial boundary value problem will definitely blow up in finite time. This is the first example for the formation of finite time singularity of strong solutions that allows interior vacuum of a viscous compressible fluid.

Abstract:In broad astrophysical contexts of large-scale gravitational collapses and outflows and as a basis for various further astrophysical applications, we formulate and investigate a theoretical problem of self-similar magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) for a non-rotating polytropic gas of quasi-spherical symmetry permeated by a completely random magnetic field. Within this framework, we derive two coupled nonlinear MHD ordinary differential equations (ODEs), examine properties of the magnetosonic critical curve, obtain various asymptotic and global semi-complete similarity MHD solutions, and qualify the applicability of our results. Unique to a magnetized gas cloud, a novel asymptotic MHD solution for a collapsing core is established. Physically, the similarity MHD inflow towards the central dense core proceeds in characteristic manners before the gas material eventually encounters a strong radiating MHD shock upon impact onto the central compact object. Sufficiently far away from the central core region enshrouded by such an MHD shock, we derive regular asymptotic behaviours. We study asymptotic solution behaviours in the vicinity of the magnetosonic critical curve and determine smooth MHD eigensolutions across this curve. Numerically, we construct global semi-complete similarity MHD solutions that cross the magnetosonic critical curve zero, one, and two times. For comparison, counterpart solutions in the case of an isothermal unmagnetized and magnetized gas flows are demonstrated in the present MHD framework at nearly isothermal and weakly magnetized conditions. For a polytropic index γ =1.25 or a strong magnetic field, different solution behaviours emerge. With a strong magnetic field, there exist semi-complete similarity solutions crossing the magnetosonic critical curve only once, and the MHD counterpart of expansion-wave collapse solution disappears. Also in the polytropic case of γ =1.25, we no longer observe the trend in the speed-density phase diagram of finding infinitely many matches to establish global MHD solutions that cross the magnetosonic critical curve twice.

Abstract:We study the formation of singularity for the isothermal Euler-Poisson system arising from plasma physics. Contrast to the previous studies yielding only limited information on the blow-up solutions, for instance, sufficient conditions for the blow-up and the temporal blow-up rate along the characteristic curve, we rather give a constructive proof of singularity formation from smooth initial data. More specifically, employing the stable blow-up profile of the Burgers equation in the self-similar variables, we establish the global stability estimate in the self-similar time, which yields the asymptotic behavior of blow-up solutions near the singularity point. Our analysis indicates that the smooth solution to the Euler-Poisson system can develop a cusp-type singularity; it exhibits $C^1$ blow-up in a finite time, while it belongs to $C^{1/3}$ at the blow-up time, provided that smooth initial data are sufficiently close to the blow-up profile in some weighted $C^4$-topology. We also present a similar result for the isentropic case, and discuss noteworthy differences in the analysis.

Abstract:We consider the electron magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equation on the 3D torus $\mathbb T^3$. For a given smooth vector field $H$ with zero mean and zero divergence, we can construct a weak solution $B$ to the electron MHD in the space $L^\gamma_tW^{1,p}_x$ for appropriate $(\gamma, p)$ such that $B$ is arbitrarily close to $H$ in this space. The parameters $\gamma$ and $p$ depend on the resistivity. As a consequence, non-uniqueness of weak solutions is obtained for the electron MHD with hyper-resistivity. In particular, non-Leray-Hopf solutions can be constructed. As a byproduct, we also show the existence of weak solutions to the electron MHD without resistivity.

Abstract:We prove the non-uniqueness of weak solutions to 3D hyper viscous and resistive MHD in the class L gamma t Ws,p viscosity and resistivity can be larger than the Lions exponent 5/4 and (s, gamma, p) lies in two supercritical regimes with respect to the Lady & zcaron;enskaja-Prodi-Serrin (LPS) condition. The constructed weak solutions admit the partial regularity outside a small fractal singular set in time with zero H eta & lowast;Hausdorff dimension, with eta & lowast; being any given small positive constant. In particular, for the canonical viscous and resistive MHD, the non-uniqueness is sharp near one endpoint of the LPS condition, which extends the recent result in [22] for Navier-Stokes equations. The partial regularity for MHD equations is also new. Furthermore, the strong vanishing viscosity and resistivity result is obtained, it yields the failure of Taylor's conjecture along some sequence of weak solutions to the hyper viscous and resistive MHD equations. Our proof utilizes the spatial-temporal intermittent convex integration scheme, the temporal building blocks feature the almost optimal intermittency, which improves the recent ones constructed in [58]. Abstract:We study the formation of singularity for the Euler–Poisson system equipped with the Boltzmann relation, which describes the dynamics of ions in an electrostatic plasma. In general, it is known that smooth solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic equations fail to exist globally in time. We establish criteria for C 1 blow-up of the Euler–Poisson system, both for the isothermal and pressureless cases. In particular, our blow-up condition for the pressureless model does not require that the gradient of velocity is negatively large. In fact, our result particularly implies that the smooth solutions can break down even if the gradient of initial velocity is trivial. For the isothermal case, we prove that smooth solutions leave C 1 class in a finite time when the gradients of the Riemann functions are initially large.

Abstract:We prove the existence of radial self-similar singular solutions for the mass supercritical Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation far from the critical regime and, more generally, branches of such solutions for the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation. We are also able to control their monotone index (number of monotone intervals). In particular, we prove the existence of monotone radial self-similar singular solutions for the cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation. The paper combines sharp analytic bounds of the solutions at infinity with computer assisted bounds for the solutions around zero and their matching at an intermediate value.

In particular, it, is shown that shocks form from a smooth spatial periodic flow in a finite time if the initial amounts of entropy and the "magnetic field" in each period are smaller than those of sound waves. Abstract:It is shown that the self-similar ansatz proposed by T. Hou and G. Luo to describe a singular solution of the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations leads, without assuming any asymptotic condition on the self-similar profiles, to an over-determined system of partial differential equations that produces two families of solutions: a class of trivial solutions in which the vorticity field is identically zero, and a family of solutions that blow-up immediately, where the vorticity field is governed by a stationary regime. In any case, the analytical properties of these solutions are not consistent with the numerical observations reported by T. Hou and G. Luo. Therefore, this result is a refinement of the previous work published by D. Chae and T.-P. Tsai on this matter, where the authors found the trivial class of solutions under a certain decay condition of the blow-up profiles.

Variational Integration for Ideal Magnetohydrodynamics and Formation of Current Singularities

Abstract:Coronal heating has been a long-standing conundrum in solar physics. Parkeru0027s conjecture that spontaneous current singularities lead to nanoflares that heat the corona has been controversial. In ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), can genuine current singularities emerge from a smooth 3D line-tied magnetic field? To numerically resolve this issue, the schemes employed must preserve magnetic topology exactly to avoid artificial reconnection in the presence of singular current densities. Structure-preserving numerical methods are favorable for mitigating numerical dissipation, and variational integration is a powerful machinery for deriving them. In this thesis, we develop variational integrators for ideal MHD in Lagrangian labeling by discretizing Newcombu0027s Lagrangian on a moving mesh using discretized exterior calculus. With the built-in frozen-in equation, the schemes are free of artificial reconnection, hence optimal for studying current singularity formation. Using this method, we first study a fundamental prototype problem in 2D, the Hahm-Kulsrud-Taylor (HKT) problem. It considers the effect of boundary perturbations on a 2D plasma magnetized by a sheared field, and its linear solution is singular. We find that with increasing resolution, the nonlinear solution converges to one with a current singularity. We then extend the HKT problem to 3D line-tied geometry, which models the solar corona by anchoring the field lines in the boundaries. The linear solution, which is singular in 2D, is found to be smooth. The nonlinear solution turns out smooth for short systems. Nonetheless, the scaling of peak current density vs. system length suggests that the nonlinear solution may become singular at a finite length. With the results in hand, we cannot confirm or rule out this possibility conclusively, since we cannot obtain solutions with system lengths near the extrapolated critical value.

Abstract:This paper examines the existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions for a system of compressible non-Newtonian magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations with variable electrical conductivity and considering the energy equation. We establish the necessary conditions on fluid properties, external forces, and initial and boundary conditions to ensure the well-posedness of the system. Our results demonstrate the existence of regular solutions in appropriate functional spaces, the uniqueness of these solutions, and their higher regularity under smooth initial and boundary conditions. These findings provide a mathematical baseline for the study of complex interactions in compressible non-Newtonian MHD flows, and particularly the findings can be considered to support more accurate numerical simulations concerning a physical situation as well as deeper analytical solutions.

Self-similar solutions of oscillatory reconnection: parameter study of magnetic field strength and background temperature

Abstract:Oscillatory reconnection is a specific type of time-dependent reconnection which involves periodic changes in the magnetic topology of a null point. The mechanism has been reported for a variety of magnetic field strengths and configurations, background temperatures and densities. All these studies report an oscillation in the current density at the null point, but also report a variety of periods, amplitudes and overall behaviors. We conduct a parametric study for equilibrium magnetic field strength and initial background temperature, solving 2D resistive MHD equations around a magnetic X-point. We introduce a parameter space for the ratio of internal-to-magnetic energy and find self-similar solutions for simulations where this ratio is below 0.1 (which represents a magnetically-dominated environment or, equivalently, a low-beta plasma). Self-similarity can be seen in oscillations in the current density at the null (including amplitude and period), Ohmic heating and the temperature generated via reconnection jets. The parameter space of energy ratios also allows us to contextualize previous studies of the oscillatory reconnection mechanism and bring those different studies together into a single unified understanding.

Self-similar solutions in cylindrical magneto-hydrodynamic blast waves with energy injection at the centre

Abstract:The evolution of shocks induced by massive stars does not depend only on the ambient magnetic field strength, but also on its orientation. In the present work, the dynamics of a magnetized blast wave is investigated under the influence of both azimuthal and axial ambient magnetic fields. The blast wave is driven by a central source and forms a shell that results from the accumulation of interstellar matter behind the shock front. A similarity form of the ambient magnetic field and a cylindrical geometry of the blast wave are assumed to obtain self-similar solutions. The model is studied separately for both azimuthal and axial magnetic field and applied to stellar wind bubbles and supernova remnants respectively, using 1D numerical simulations. We found that the magnetized blast wave differs from the self-similar case without an ambient magnetic field. The forward shock front goes slower in the azimuthal case and faster in the axial one. For both tangential orientations, the thickness of the shell increases with the magnetic strength. In the azimuthal case, the thermal energy can be converted to magnetic energy near the inner boundary of the shell. Thus, the temperature drops and the magnetic field increases at the tangential discontinuity of the stellar wind bubble. In the axial case of a supernova remnant, the numerical solution al w ays follows a special curve in the parameter space given by the self-similar model.

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study of continuously self-similar (CSS) gravitational dynamics in two dimensions, motivated by critical phenomena observed in higher dimensional gravitational theories. We consider CSS spacetimes admitting a homothetic Killing vector (HKV) field. For a general two-dimensional gravitational theory coupled to a dilaton field and Maxwell field, we find that the assumption of continuous self-similarity determines the form of the dilaton coupling to the curvature. Certain limits produce two important classes of models, one of which is closely related to two-dimensional target space string theory and the other being Liouville gravity. The gauge field is shown to produce a shift in the dilaton potential strength. We consider static black hole solutions and find spacetimes with uncommon asymptotic behaviour. We show the vacuum self-similar spacetimes to be special limits of the static solutions. We add matter fields consistent with self-similarity (including a certain model of semi-classical gravity) and write down the autonomous ordinary differential equations governing the gravitational dynamics. Based on the phenomenon of finite-time blow-up in ODEs, we argue that spacetime singularities are generic in our models. We present qualitatively diverse results from analytical and numerical investigations regarding matter field collapse and singularities. We find interesting hints of a Choptuik-like scaling law.

Singular diffusionless limits of double-diffusive instabilities in magnetohydrodynamics

Abstract:We study local instabilities of a differentially rotating viscous flow of electrically conducting incompressible fluid subject to an external azimuthal magnetic field. In the presence of the magnetic field, the hydrodynamically stable flow can demonstrate non-axisymmetric azimuthal magnetorotational instability (AMRI) both in the diffusionless case and in the double-diffusive case with viscous and ohmic dissipation. Performing stability analysis of amplitude transport equations of short-wavelength approximation, we find that the threshold of the diffusionless AMRI via the Hamilton–Hopf bifurcation is a singular limit of the thresholds of the viscous and resistive AMRI corresponding to the dissipative Hopf bifurcation and manifests itself as the Whitney umbrella singular point. A smooth transition between the two types of instabilities is possible only if the magnetic Prandtl number is equal to unity, Pm =1. At a fixed Pm ≠1, the threshold of the double-diffusive AMRI is displaced by finite distance in the parameter space with respect to the diffusionless case even in the zero dissipation limit. The complete neutral stability surface contains three Whitney umbrella singular points and two mutually orthogonal intervals of self-intersection. At these singularities, the double-diffusive system reduces to a marginally stable system which is either Hamiltonian or parity–time-symmetric.
