Abstract:In general, a high-quality (Q) microresonator can accommodate abundant whispering gallery modes (WGMs) with the mode number increasing with the dimensional sizes of the microresonator. Removing the unnecessary modes while reorganizing the remaining modes is of vital importance, which, however, has been proved challenging and usually results in a tradeoff with the Q of the microresonator. Here, an effective and controllable mode trimming and clustering mechanism is revealed underlying the generation of polygon and star modes in weakly perturbed tapered fiber-coupled lithium niobate whispering gallery microresonators. Experimentally, various polygon and star modes are observed in sequence within a single microresonator by tuning the excitation wavelength or varying the coupling position between a tapered fiber and the circular microresonator, which can be well reproduced with the theoretical model. The finding offers a ubiquitous solution for a broad range of applications requiring elaborate selection and organization of the high-Q WGMs. An effective and controllable mode trimming and clustering mechanism underlying the generation of polygon and star modes is demonstrated in a weakly perturbed lithium niobate microcavity. The various polygon and star mode signals are observed in sequence in a microcavity without the need for some external deformations, agreeing well with the theoretical model.image

Abstract:Optical resonators with high-quality factors (Q-factor) constitute the main building block for many photonic devices capitalizing on light-matter interactions, ranging from light emitters to biochemical sensors. While a high Q-factor enhances light-matter interactions, it also limits the device operation bandwidth. Here we propose and numerically analyze a generic coupling scheme to overcome the apparent trade-off. By using an orthogonal grating, broadband optical coupling into high-Q cavities of diverse geometric configurations can be achieved. As an example, the approach is applied to demonstrate over a 28-fold optical absorption enhancement across a 150 nm band around 900 nm wavelength in single-layer graphene embedded inside a Fabry-Perot cavity.
Needle-type dual microsensor for the simultaneous monitoring of glucose and insulin.

Abstract:A miniature needle-type sensor suitable for the simultaneous amperometric monitoring of glucose and insulin is described. The integrated microsensor consists of dual (biologically and chemically) modified carbon-paste working electrodes inserted into a 14-guage needle. The glucose probe is based on the biocatalytic action of glucose oxidase, and the insulin one relies on the electrocatalytic activity of ruthenium oxide. The analytical performance of the dual sensor is assessed under flow injection conditions. The needle dual detector exhibits a very rapid response to dynamic changes in the concentrations of glucose and insulin. No apparent cross reactivity is observed in mixtures containing millimolar glucose levels and nanomolar insulin concentrations. The response is highly linear (to at least 1000 nM insulin and 14 mM glucose) and reproducible (RSD = 2.6-4.1%). The combination microsensor holds great promise for real-time measurements of the insulin/glucose ratio and for improved management of diabetes.

Abstract:Guided-mode resonances in diffraction gratings are manifested as peaks (dips) in reflection (transmission) spectra. Resonances with smaller line widths, i.e., with higher Q-factors, ensure stronger light–matter interactions and are beneficial for field-dependent physical processes. However, these high-Q resonances often suffer from strong angular and spectral dispersions. We demonstrate that a class of resonant modes with extraordinarily weak dispersion and Q-factor ∼1000 can be excited in crossed gratings simultaneously with the modes with well-known linear dispersion. Furthermore, the polarization of the incoming light can be adjusted to engineer the dispersion of these modes, and strong to near-flat dispersion or vice versa can be achieved by switching between two mutually orthogonal linear polarization states. We introduce a semi-analytical model to explain the underlying physics behind these observations and perform full-wave numerical simulations and experiments to support our theoretical conjecture. The results presented here will benefit all applications that rely on resonances in free-space-coupled geometries.

Topologically Enabled Ultra-high-Q Guided Resonances Robust to Out-of-plane Scattering

Abstract:Due to their ability to confine light, optical resonators are of great importance to science and technology, yet their performances are often limited by out-of-plane scattering losses from inevitable fabrication imperfections. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a class of guided resonances in photonic crystal slabs, where out-of-plane scattering losses are strongly suppressed due to their topological nature. Specifically, these resonances arise when multiple bound states in the continuum - each carrying a topological charge - merge in the momentum space and enhance the quality factors of all resonances nearby. We experimentally achieve quality factors as high as $4.9\times 10^5$ based on these resonances in the telecommunication regime, which is 12-times higher than ordinary designs. We further show this enhancement is robust across the samples we <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://fabricated.Our" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> work paves the way for future explorations of topological photonics in systems with open boundary condition and their applications in improving optoelectronic devices in photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel optical waveguide-type ring resonator by inserting titled waveguide gratings (TWGs) with the Brewster's angle is proposed. Using the Marcatili approximation, the electric fields for a rectangular waveguide is obtained. Then, the volume current method (VCM) is first developed for rectangular-core TWGs. By the VCM, the feasibility of the TWGs to filter the s-polarized light propagating in the resonator is proved. When a 4-cm-long 45°-titled TWG is applied to a silica waveguide-ring resonator, a polarization extinction ratio of 40 dB is obtained. The influences of the angular misalignment as well as the grating period of the TWGs are also evaluated.

Abstract:High-$Q$ whispering gallery mode microresonators are cornerstones to develop compact coherent sources like single frequency lasers or frequency combs. This work reports a detailed characterization of a whispering gallery mode microsphere in the near ultraviolet. Light coupling in the resonator is obtain thanks to a robust angle-polished fiber allowing to investigate the different coupling regimes. An intrinsic $Q_0$-factor of $2.2 \times 10^8$ and a finesse of $7.3 \times 10^4$ are reported at a wavelength of 420 nm. Physical mechanisms contributing to the $Q_0$-factor are discussed and routes to improve the performances are drawn. Such high-$Q$ factor and high finesse are key ingredients to ease the study of photonic devices based on WGM microresonators.

Abstract:High quality(Q) factor optical resonators are indispensable for many photonic devices. While very large Q-factors can be obtained theoretically in guided-mode settings, free-space implementations suffer from various limitations on the narrowest linewidth in real experiments. Here, we propose a simple strategy to enable ultrahigh-Q guided-mode resonances by introducing a patterned perturbation layer on top of a multilayer-waveguide system. We demonstrate that the associated Q-factors are inversely proportional to the perturbation squared while the resonant wavelength can be tuned through material or structural parameters. We experimentally demonstrate such high-Q resonances at telecom wavelengths by patterning a low-index layer on top of a 220 nm silicon on insulator substrate. The measurements show Q-factors up to 2.39 × 10 5 , comparable to the largest Q-factor obtained by topological engineering, while the resonant wavelength is tuned by varying the lattice constant of the top perturbation layer. Our results hold great promise for exciting applications like sensors and filters.

Robust multi-mode rainbow trapping with ultra-high-Q Fano resonances

Abstract:We present a groundbreaking and versatile approach to multi-mode rainbow trapping in photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs), overcoming long-standing limitations in photonic device design. Our innovative semi-bilayer PC design, formed by stacking two PCs, enables the realization of new photonic modes that were previously inaccessible, leading to enhanced device flexibility, improved performance, and increased resilience to defects and imperfections. By meticulously engineering a chirped PC within the PCW, we achieve multi-mode light trapping at distinct positions for different frequencies along the waveguide, effectively creating a rainbow of light. This study paves the way for efficient and robust trapping and demultiplexing of multiple wavelengths, opening up new avenues for on-chip nanophotonic applications. Moreover, the realization of ultra-high-quality (Q) factor Fano resonances within the waveguide cavity unveils unprecedented possibilities for designing on-chip nanophotonic devices. The diverse array of Fano resonances holds immense potentials for developing novel optical filters, switches, and lasers with exceptionally low thresholds. Our proposed structure offers a more compact, efficient, and robust solution for multi-wavelength photonic device applications.

Abstract:We report and demonstrate an efficient free-space optical switching scheme by harnessing the high-Q resonances of quasi-guided modes (QGMs) supported by a corrugated Lithium Niobate grating on a slab waveguide. The well-confined guided modes in the slab are inaccessible by free-space radiations, so the incident light has a transmittance close to unity. However, when the refractive index of every second ridge is changed by Pockels effect at the presence of an applied voltage, the grating period increases by a factor of 2, leading to the transition from the guides modes into QGMs. The QGMs possess ultra-high Q factors allowing their efficient excitation through incident radiations, and then a near-zero transmittance at the wavelength of the QGM resonance is observed. The large contrast in the optical transmittance between the cases w/ and w/o the applied voltage show that an efficient optical switch is achieved. Although the ultra-high Q factors of the QGMs make it challenging to match the working wavelength to the resonance, we further depict that this problem can be addressed by exploiting the large spatial dispersion of the QGMs, which enables an easy tuning of the resonance to a certain wavelength by changing the incident angle.

Abstract:There are some issues with traditional whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators like poor light extraction and a dense mode spectrum. In this paper we introduce a solution to these limitations by proposing open WGM (OWGM) resonators that effectively reduce the mode density and enable directional radiation through a connected waveguide at the expense of some lowering in Q-factor. Numerical simulations of two-dimensional metallic and dielectric disk resonators with holes reveal a significant increase in intermode distance. The study also extends to three-dimensional dielectric OWGM resonators, demonstrating the formation of sparse spectra suitable for photonics applications. Additionally, the design of a cylindrical Bragg microresonator connected to a single-mode fiber via an optimized topology-based connector achieves near-unity transmission and efficient coupling. This approach enhances the development of new photonic devices, addressing the limitations of traditional high Q-factor WGM resonators and offering potential advancements in laser technology and optical communications, where compactness and manufacturability are prioritized over ultra-high Q-factors.

Abstract:This work utilizes two whispering‐gallery mode resonators embedded with Zeeman‐split quantum dots to simultaneously achieve unidirectional reflectionlessness and transmissionlessness. The switching between them is achieved by modulating the coupling strength between whispering‐gallery mode resonators and waveguides. The reflection and transmission characteristics of a system composed of two whispering‐gallery mode (WGM) resonators are explored. Each resonator contains a Zeeman split quantum dot and side‐couples to an optical fiber. The results indicate that the unidirectional reflectionlessness and transmissionlessness can be achieved by adjusting the coupling strength between the resonators and the optical fiber, as well as the transition rate between the counter‐propagating modes within the WGM resonators. Besides, a one‐to‐one correspondence is set up between the resonance frequencies of quantum dots' energy levels and the positions of reflectionlessness (transmissionlessness) peaks when phase shift between two WGM resonators is π. This research provides the valuable insights for the development of quantum optical devices such as isolators, circulators, and routers.

Abstract:High- and ultrahigh-Q whispering-gallery mode resonators have the capability to trap photons by total internal reflection for a duration ranging from nanoseconds to milliseconds. These exceptionally long photon lifetimes enhance the light–matter interactions at all scales, namely at the electronic, molecular, and lattice levels. As a consequence, nonlinear photon scattering can be triggered with very low threshold powers, down to a few microwatts. The possibility to efficiently harness photon–photon interactions with a system optimizing size, weight, power, and cost constraints has created a new, quickly thriving research area in photonics science and technology. This topic is inherently cross-disciplinary, as it stands at the intersection of nonlinear and quantum optics, crystallography, optoelectronics, and microwave photonics. From a fundamental perspective, high-Q whispering-gallery mode resonators have emerged as an ideal platform to investigate light–matter interactions in nonlinear bulk materials. From an applied viewpoint, technological applications include time-metrology, aerospace engineering, coherent optical fiber communications, or nonclassical light generation, among others. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the most recent advances in this area, which is increasingly gaining importance in contemporary photonics.

Abstract:<p>Subwavelength confinement of light with plasmonics is promising for nanophotonics and optoelectronics. However, it is nontrivial to obtain narrow plasmonic resonances due to the intrinsically high optical losses and radiative damping in metallic structures. In this review, a thorough summary of the recent research progress on achieving high‐quality (high‐Q) factor plasmonic resonances is provided, emphasizing the fundamentals and six resonant mode types, including surface lattice resonances, multipolar resonances, plasmonic Fano resonances, plasmon‐induced transparency, guided‐mode resonances, and Tamm plasmon resonances. The applications of high‐Q plasmonic resonances in spectrally selective thermal emission, sensing, single‐photon emission, filtering, and band‐edge lasing are also discussed.</p>

Abstract:In this work, we propose a photonic quasicrystal waveguide, which contains a hollow core surrounded by coaxial dielectric quasiperiodic multilayer. Due to the self-similarity in the cladding structure, multiple omnidirectional photonic band gaps (PBGs) exist in the waveguide. The light waves with the frequencies within the omnidirectional PBGs are totally reflected, thereafter, the transport of multimodes is achieved in the quasiperiodic waveguide. Further, it is shown that the centre frequency and the width of the omnidirectional PBG can be tuned by the refractive indexes or the generations of the quasiperiodic sequence in the cladding multilayer. As a consequence, both the quality factor and the confinement performance of the waveguide can be significantly enhanced by decreasing the width of the omnidirectional PBGs. The investigations make it possible to design miniaturized multifunctional optical devices, such as on-chip narrowband waveguide-based filters and laser resonators.
Dense and Sharp Resonance Peaks in Stretched Moiré Waveguides

Abstract:In this article, we demonstrate dense resonant peaks in the transmission spectra of a rectangular waveguide inscribed with a stretched moiré pattern. We investigated an array of silicon waveguides with sinusoidally modulated cladding of varying depth of modulation. The investigation reveals a critical depth of modulation that splits the geometries into weakly scattering and strongly scattering regimes. Geometries in the weakly scattering regime resemble Bragg waveguides with shallow cladding modulation, whereas in the strongly scattering regime, the geometries resemble chains of isolated dielectric particles. The guided mode photonic bandgap for geometries in the strongly scattering regime is much larger than that of the weakly scattering regime. By inscribing stretched moiré patterns in the strongly scattering regime, we show that a large number of sharp peaks can be created in the transmission spectra of the waveguide. All periodic stretched moiré patterns can be identified with an R parameter. The R parameter indicates the ratio of the supercell period of the stretched system to the unstretched system. Our empirical study shows that the density of peaks linearly increases with R. The multiple resonance peaks evolve along well-defined trajectories with quality factor defined by exponential functions of R.

Abstract:The rapid development of high-Q macroscopic mechanical resonators has enabled great advances in optomechanics. Further improvements could allow for quantum-limited or quantum-enhanced applications at ambient temperature. Some of the remaining challenges include the integration of high-Q structures on a chip, while simultaneously achieving large coupling strengths through an optical read-out. Here, we present a versatile fabrication method, which allows us to build fully integrated optomechanical structures. We place a photonic crystal cavity directly above a mechanical resonator with high-Q fundamental out-of-plane mode, separated by a small gap. The highly confined optical field has a large overlap with the mechanical mode, enabling strong optomechanical interaction strengths. Furthermore, we implement a novel photonic crystal design, which allows for a very large cavity photon number, a highly important feature for optomechanical experiments and sensor applications. Our versatile approach is not limited to our particular design but allows for integrating an out-of-plane optical read-out into almost any device layout. Additionally, it can be scaled to large arrays and paves the way to realizing quantum experiments and applications with mechanical resonators based on high-Q out-of-plane modes alike.

Abstract:In this work, we discuss and experimentally investigate the whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in a 500 μm radius silicon sphere. We begin by reviewing the basics of WGM resonators, followed by simulations and experimental results obtained with the aforementioned silicon spherical WGM resonator. The recorded WGM signatures in the transmission and scattering spectra excited, in the near-infrared (near-IR) region, agree well with the simulations. Thermo-optic tuning of these WGMs is achieved by introducing a pump laser in the violet-blue region. Red-shifts in wavelength are observed, which increase with the increase in the pump power. A shift of 0.63 nm is observed at a pump power of 6.32 mW. We also study switching by analysing the transient response of the WGM spectra. The measured WGMs exhibit high quality factors ( Q∼105 ), which along with the aforesaid tunability, demonstrates the potential of spherical silicon resonator as a platform for photonic applications, e.g. sensing and communication. In summary, this work contributes towards the understanding of the fundamental physics of WGMs and provides insights into silicon WGM resonators.
