Abstract:Travelling-wave solutions are shown to bifurcate from relative periodic orbits in plane Poiseuille flow at Re = 2000 in a saddle-node infinite period bifurcation. These solutions consist in self-sustaining sinuous quasi-streamwise streaks and quasi- streamwise vortices located in the bulk of the flow. The lower branch travelling-wave solutions evolve into spanwise localized states when the spanwise size Lz of the domain in which they are computed is increased. On the contrary, upper branch of travelling-wave solutions develop multiple streaks when Lz is increased. Upper branch travelling-wave solutions can be continued into coherent solutions of the filtered equations used in large-eddy simulations where they represent turbulent coherent large-scale motions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate periodic travelling waves in a three-layer system with the rigid-lid assumption. Solutions are recovered numerically using a boundary integral method. We consider the case where the density difference between the layers is small (i.e. a weakly stratified fluid). We consider the system both with and without the Boussinesq assumption to explore the effect the assumption has on the solution space. Periodic solutions of both mode-1 and mode-2 are found, and their bifurcation structure and limiting configurations are described in detail. Similarities are found with the two-layer case, where large-amplitude solutions are found to overhang with an internal angle of . However, the addition of a second interface results in a richer bifurcation space, in part due to the existence of mode-2 waves and their resonance with mode-1 waves. New limiting profiles are found.

A geometric characterization of steady laminar flow

Abstract:We study the steady states of the Euler equations on the periodic channel or annulus. We show that if these flows are laminar (layered by closed non-contractible streamlines which foliate the domain), then they must be either parallel or circular flows. We also show that a large subset of these shear flows are isolated from non-shear stationary states. For Poiseuille flow, $(v(y),0)=(y^2,0)$, our result shows that all stationary solutions in a sufficiently small $C^2$ neighborhood are shear flows. We then show that if $v(y)=y^n$ with $n \geq 1$, then in any $C^{n-}$ neighborhood, there exist smooth non-shear steady states, traveling waves, and quasiperiodic solutions of any number of non-commensurate frequencies. This proves the rigidity near Poiseuille is sharp. Finally, we prove that on general compact doubly connected domains, laminar steady Euler flows with constant velocity on the boundary must also be either parallel or circular, and the domain a periodic channel or an annulus. This shows that laminar free boundary Euler solutions must have Euclidean symmetry.

Stationary Structures near the Kolmogorov and Poiseuille Flows in the 2d Euler Equations

Abstract:We study the behavior of solutions to the incompressible $2d$ Euler equations near two canonical shear flows with critical points, the Kolmogorov and Poiseuille flows, with consequences for the associated Navier-Stokes problems. We exhibit a large family of new, non-trivial stationary states of analytic regularity, that are arbitrarily close to the Kolmogorov flow on the square torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. This situation contrasts strongly with the setting of some monotone shear flows, such as the Couette flow: in both cases the linearized problem exhibits an "inviscid damping" mechanism that leads to relaxation of perturbations of the base flows back to nearby shear flows. While this effect persists nonlinearly for suitably small and regular perturbations of some monotone shear flows, for the Kolmogorov flow our result shows that this is not possible. Our construction of these stationary states builds on a degeneracy in the global structure of the Kolmogorov flow on $\mathbb{T}^2$. In this regard both the Kolmogorov flow on a rectangular torus and the Poiseuille flow in a channel are very different, and we show that the only stationary states near them must indeed be shears, even in relatively low regularity $H^3$ resp. $H^{5+}$. In addition, we show that this behavior is mirrored closely in the related Navier-Stokes settings: the linearized problems near the Poiseuille and Kolmogorov flows both exhibit an enhanced rate of dissipation. Previous work by us and others shows that this effect survives in the full, nonlinear problem near the Poiseuille flow and near the Kolmogorov flow on rectangular tori, provided that the perturbations lie below a certain threshold. However, we show here that the corresponding result cannot hold near the Kolmogorov flow on $\mathbb{T}^2$.

Non-uniqueness of admissible solutions for the 2D Euler equation with $L^p$ vortex data

Abstract:For any $2<p<\infty$ we prove that there exists an initial velocity field $v^\circ\in L^2$ with vorticity $\omega^\circ\in L^1\cap L^p$ for which there are infinitely many bounded admissible solutions $v\in C_tL^2$ to the 2D Euler equation. This shows sharpness of the weak-strong uniqueness principle, as well as sharpness of Yudovich's proof of uniqueness in the class of bounded admissible solutions. The initial data are truncated power-law vortices. The construction is based on finding a suitable self-similar subsolution and then applying the convex integration method. In addition, we extend it for $1<p<\infty$ and show that the energy dissipation rate of the subsolution vanishes at $t=0$ if and only if $p\geq 3/2$, which is the Onsager critical exponent in terms of $L^p$ control on vorticity in 2D.

Large traveling capillary-gravity waves for Darcy flow

Abstract:We study capillary-gravity and capillary surface waves for fluid flows governed by Darcy's law. This includes flows in vertical Hele-Shaw cells and in porous media (the one-phase Muskat problem) with finite or infinite depth. The free boundary is acted upon by an external pressure posited to be in traveling wave form with an arbitrary periodic profile and an amplitude parameter. For any given wave speed, we first prove that there exists a unique local curve of small periodic traveling waves corresponding to small values of the parameter. Then we prove that as the parameter increases but could possibly be bounded, the curve belongs to a connected set $\mathcal{C}$ of traveling waves. The set $\mathcal{C}$ contains traveling waves that either have arbitrarily large gradients or are arbitrarily close to the rigid bottom in the finite depth case. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first construction of large traveling surface waves for a viscous free boundary problem.

Large amplitude quasi-periodic traveling waves in two dimensional forced rotating fluids

Abstract:We establish the existence of quasi-periodic traveling wave solutions for the $\beta$-plane equation on $\mathbb{T}^2$ with a large quasi-periodic traveling wave external force. These solutions exhibit large sizes, which depend on the frequency of oscillations of the external force. Due to the presence of small divisors, the proof relies on a nonlinear Nash-Moser scheme tailored to construct nonlinear waves of large size. To our knowledge, this is the first instance of constructing quasi-periodic solutions for a quasilinear PDE in dimensions greater than one, with a 1-smoothing dispersion relation that is highly degenerate - indicating an infinite-dimensional kernel for the linear principal operator. This degeneracy challenge is overcome by preserving the traveling-wave structure, the conservation of momentum and by implementing normal form methods for the linearized system with sublinear dispersion relation in higher space dimension.

Dissipative Euler flows originating from circular vortex filaments

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the first existence result of weak solutions to the 3D Euler equation with initial vorticity concentrated in a circle and velocity field in $C([0,T],L^{2^-})$. The energy becomes finite and decreasing for positive times, with vorticity concentrated in a ring that thickens and moves in the direction of the symmetry axis. With our approach, there is no need to mollify the initial data or to rescale the time variable. We overcome the singularity of the initial data by applying convex integration within the appropriate time-weighted space.

Abstract:We prove the existence of steady space quasi-periodic stream functions, solutions for the Euler equation in a vorticity-stream function formulation in the two dimensional channel . These solutions bifurcate from a prescribed shear equilibrium near the Couette flow, whose profile induces finitely many modes of oscillations in the horizontal direction for the linearized problem. Using a Nash–Moser implicit function iterative scheme, near such equilibrium we construct small amplitude, space reversible stream functions, slightly deforming the linear solutions and retaining the horizontal quasi-periodic structure. These solutions exist for most values of the parameters characterizing the shear equilibrium. As a by-product, the streamlines of the nonlinear flow exhibit Kelvin's cat eye-like trajectories arising from the finitely many stagnation lines of the shear equilibrium.

Abstract:The study of the Euler equations in flows with constant vorticity has piqued the curiosity of a considerable number of researchers over the years. Much research has been conducted on this subject under the assumption of steady flow. In this work, we provide a numerical approach that allows us to compute solitary waves in flows with constant vorticity and analyse their stability. Through a conformal mapping technique, we compute solutions of the steady Euler equations, then feed them as initial data for the time-dependent Euler equations. We focus on analysing to what extent the steady solitary waves are stable within the time-dependent framework. Our numerical simulations indicate that although it is possible to compute solitary waves for the steady Euler equations in flows with large values of vorticity, such waves are not numerically stable for vorticities with absolute value much greater than one. Besides, we notice that large waves are unstable even for small values of vorticity.

Abstract:We study surface gravity waves for viscous fluid flows governed by Darcy's law. The free boundary is acted upon by an external pressure posited to be in traveling wave form with a periodic profile. It has been proven that for any given speed, small external pressures generate small periodic traveling waves that are asymptotically stable. In this work, we construct a class of slowly traveling waves that are of arbitrary size and asymptotically stable. Our results are valid in all dimensions and for both the finite and infinite depth cases.

Abstract:A {\em vortex pair} solution of the incompressible $2d$ Euler equation in vorticity form $$ \omega_t + \nabla^\perp \Psi\cdot \nabla \omega = 0 , \quad \Psi = (-\Delta)^{-1} \omega, \quad \hbox{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,\infty)$$ is a travelling wave solution of the form $\omega(x,t) = W(x_1-ct,x_2 )$ where $W(x)$ is compactly supported and odd in $x_2$. We revisit the problem of constructing solutions which are highly $\varepsilon$-concentrated around points $ (0, \pm q)$, more precisely with approximately radially symmetric, compactly supported bumps with radius $\varepsilon$ and masses $\pm m$. Fine asymptotic expressions are obtained, and the smooth dependence on the parameters $q$ and $\varepsilon$ for the solution and its propagation speed $c$ are established. These results improve constructions through variational methods in [14] and in [5] for the case of a bounded domain.

Abstract:A new algebraic method is devised to uniformly construct a series of new travelling wave solutions for two variant Boussinesq equations. The solutions obtained in this paper include soliton solutions, rational solutions, triangular periodic solutions, Jacobi and Weierstrass doubly periodic wave solutions. Among them, the Jacobi elliptic periodic wave solutions exactly degenerate to the soliton solutions at a certain limit condition. Compared with most existing tanh methods, the proposed method gives new and more general solutions. More importantly, the method provides a guideline to classify the various types of the solution according to some parameters.

Abstract:We give an exhaustive characterization of singular weak solutions for ordinary differential equations of the form $\ddot{u}\,u + \frac{1}{2}\dot{u}^2 + F'(u) =0$, where $F$ is an analytic function. Our motivation stems from the fact that in the context of hydrodynamics several prominent equations are reducible to an equation of this form upon passing to a moving frame. We construct peaked and cusped waves, fronts with finite-time decay and compact solitary waves. We prove that one cannot obtain peaked and compactly supported traveling waves for the same equation. In particular, a peaked traveling wave cannot have compact support and vice versa. To exemplify the approach we apply our results to the Camassa-Holm equation and the equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude, and show how the different types of singular solutions can be obtained varying the energy level of the corresponding planar Hamiltonian systems.

Abstract:We study the nonexistence of multi-dimensional solitary waves for the Euler–Poisson system governing ion dynamics. It is well-known that the one-dimensional Euler–Poisson system has solitary waves that travel faster than the ion-sound speed. In contrast, we show that the two-dimensional and three-dimensional models do not admit nontrivial irrotational spatially localized traveling waves in the L1 space for any traveling velocity and for general pressure laws. Our results provide theoretical evidence for the stability of line solitary waves in multi-dimensional Euler–Poisson flows. We derive some Pohozaev type identities associated with the energy and density integrals. This approach is extended to prove the nonexistence of irrotational multi-dimensional solitary waves for the two-species Euler–Poisson system for ions and electrons.

Steady Contiguous Vortex-Patch Dipole Solutions of the 2D Incompressible Euler Equation

Abstract:We rigorously construct the first steady traveling wave solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equation that take the form of a contiguous vortex-patch dipole, which can be viewed as the vortex-patch counterpart of the well-known Lamb-Chaplygin dipole. Our construction is based on a novel fixed-point approach that determines the patch boundary as the fixed point of a certain nonlinear map. Smoothness and other properties of the patch boundary are also obtained.
