Abstract:We study capillary-gravity and capillary surface waves for fluid flows governed by Darcy's law. This includes flows in vertical Hele-Shaw cells and in porous media (the one-phase Muskat problem) with finite or infinite depth. The free boundary is acted upon by an external pressure posited to be in traveling wave form with an arbitrary periodic profile and an amplitude parameter. For any given wave speed, we first prove that there exists a unique local curve of small periodic traveling waves corresponding to small values of the parameter. Then we prove that as the parameter increases but could possibly be bounded, the curve belongs to a connected set $\mathcal{C}$ of traveling waves. The set $\mathcal{C}$ contains traveling waves that either have arbitrarily large gradients or are arbitrarily close to the rigid bottom in the finite depth case. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first construction of large traveling surface waves for a viscous free boundary problem.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the construction problem of large - amplitude capillary - gravity waves in viscous fluids. Specifically, the researchers focus on surface capillary - gravity waves and capillary waves in viscous fluid flows described by Darcy's law. These problems include flows in vertical Hele - Shaw cells and porous media (single - phase Muskat problems), and these flows may occur in cases of finite or infinite depth.
### Research Background
For inviscid fluids, classical fluid mechanics has conducted in - depth research on periodic traveling waves with small amplitudes. For example, Stokes' work provided a strict construction method for small - period traveling waves in infinite depth, and Struik carried out similar research in finite depth. Subsequent research has further expanded this field, including the construction of extreme Stokes waves, solitary waves, and periodic traveling waves with vorticity.
However, for the traveling - wave problems of viscous fluids, the development of mathematical theory is relatively lagging. Since viscous fluids dissipate energy, traveling waves can only exist when the system is subjected to appropriate external forces. Experimental studies have shown that by uniformly moving a blowing pipe on the surface of a viscous fluid, the traveling - wave phenomenon can be observed. Inspired by these experimental works, Leoni - Tice first constructed small traveling waves of the free - boundary gravity and capillary - gravity incompressible Navier - Stokes equations under the action of body forces and external stress tensors on the free boundary.
### Main Contributions of the Paper
The main purpose of this paper is to provide a non - perturbative method to construct large - amplitude traveling waves in viscous free - boundary problems through the global continuation theory. Specifically, the researchers consider capillary - gravity waves and capillary waves in fluid flows described by Darcy's law and prove the following points:
1. **Small Waves**: For any given wave speed, there exists a unique local curve corresponding to small - period traveling waves when the parameter values are small.
2. **Large Waves**: As the parameter increases, this local curve belongs to a connected set \( C \) of traveling waves. In the case of finite depth, the set \( C \) contains traveling waves with arbitrarily large gradients or traveling waves arbitrarily close to the rigid bottom.
3. **Regularity**: For any \( k\geq3 \) and \( \mu\in(0, 1) \), if the external pressure profile \( \phi\in\dot{C}^{k - 2,\mu}(T^d) \), then the set \( C\subset\dot{C}^{k,\mu}(T^d)\times\mathbb{R} \).
### Main Conclusions
- This paper constructs large - amplitude traveling waves in viscous free - boundary problems for the first time.
- Through the Global Implicit Function Theorem (GIFT) and Leray - Schauder degree theory, the existence and regularity of traveling waves are proved.
- In the case of finite depth, it is also proved that traveling waves may be very close to the bottom.
### Method Overview
- **Linearization**: By linearizing the Dirichlet - to - Neumann operator and the mean curvature operator, the traveling - wave equation is transformed into a fixed - point problem.
- **Global Continuation**: Using the global implicit function theorem, the connectivity of the traveling - wave solutions is proved, and some undesired situations, such as "ring" - shaped solution sets, are excluded.
In conclusion, this paper provides a new construction method for large - amplitude traveling waves in viscous fluids, filling the gap in this field.
