Abstract:Entanglement entropy of typical quantum states, also known as the Page curve, plays an important role in quantum many-body systems and quantum gravity. However, little has hitherto been understood about the role of symmetry in quantum entanglement. Here, we establish the comprehensive classification of typical quantum entanglement for free fermions, or equivalently the quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with symmetry, on the basis of the tenfold fundamental symmetry classes of time reversal, charge conjugation, and chiral transformation. Through both analytical and numerical calculations of random matrix theory, we show that the volume-law contribution to average entanglement entropy is robust and remains unaffected by symmetry. Conversely, we uncover that the constant terms of the average and variance of entanglement entropy yield tenfold universal values unique to each symmetry class. These constant terms originate from the combination of a global scaling of the entanglement spectrum due to time-reversal symmetry and a singular peak at the center of the entanglement spectrum due to chiral or particle-hole symmetry. Our work elucidates the interplay of symmetry and entanglement in quantum physics and provides characterization of symmetry-enriched quantum chaos.

Abstract:A closed formula of the universal part of supersymmetric Rényi entropy S q for six-dimensional (1, 0) superconformal theories is proposed. Within our arguments, S q across a spherical entangling surface is a cubic polynomial of ν = 1/q, with 4 coefficients expressed as linear combinations of the ’t Hooft anomaly coefficients for the R-symmetry and gravitational anomalies. As an application, we establish linear relations between the c-type Weyl anomalies and the ’t Hooft anomaly coefficients. We make a conjecture relating the supersymmetric Rényi entropy to an equivariant integral of the anomaly polynomial in even dimensions and check it against known data in 4d and 6d.

Abstract:The entropy of a graph is an information-theoretic quantity which expresses the complexity of a graph \cite{DM1,M}. After Shannon introduced the definition of entropy to information and communication, many generalizations of the entropy measure have been proposed, such as Rényi entropy and Daròczy's entropy. In this article, we prove accurate connections (inequalities) between generalized graph entropies, distinct graph energies and topological indices. Additionally, we obtain some extremal properties of nine generalized graph entropies by employing distinct graph energies and topological indices.

Symmetry-Resolved Relative Entropy of Random States

Abstract:We use large-$N$ diagrammatic techniques to calculate the relative entropy of symmetric random states drawn from the Wishart ensemble. These methods are specifically designed for symmetric sectors, allowing us to determine the relative entropy for random states exhibiting $U(1)$ symmetry. This calculation serves as a measure of distinguishability within the symmetry sectors of random states. Our findings reveal that the symmetry-resolved relative entropy of random pure states displays universal statistical behavior. Furthermore, we derive the symmetry-resolved Page curve. These results deepen our understanding of the properties of these random states.

A holographic inequality for $N=7$ regions

Abstract:In holographic duality, boundary states that have semiclassical bulk duals must obey inequalities, which bound their subsystems' von Neumann entropies. Hitherto known inequalities constrain entropies of reduced states on up to $N=5$ disjoint subsystems. Here we report one new such inequality, which involves $N=7$ disjoint regions. Our work supports a recent conjecture on the structure of holographic inequalities, which predicted the existence and schematic form of the new inequality. We explain the logic and educated guesses by which we arrived at the inequality, and comment on the feasibility of employing similar tactics in a more exhaustive search.

Abstract:We introduce a mathematical framework for symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy with a non-abelian symmetry group. To obtain a reduced density matrix that is block-diagonal in the non-abelian charges, we define subsystems operationally in terms of subalgebras of invariant observables. We derive exact formulas for the average and the variance of the typical entanglement entropy for the ensemble of random pure states with fixed non-abelian charges. We focus on compact, semisimple Lie groups. We show that, compared to the abelian case, new phenomena arise from the interplay of locality and non-abelian symmetry, such as the asymmetry of the entanglement entropy under subsystem exchange, which we show in detail by computing the Page curve of a many-body system with $SU(2)$ symmetry.

Generalized entropy for general subregions in quantum gravity

Abstract:We consider quantum algebras of observables associated with subregions in theories of Einstein gravity coupled to matter in the $G_N\rightarrow 0$ limit. When the subregion is spatially compact or encompasses an asymptotic boundary, we argue that the algebra is a type II von Neumann factor. To do so in the former case we introduce a model of an observer living in the region; in the latter, the ADM Hamiltonian effectively serves as an observer. In both cases the entropy of states on which this algebra acts is UV finite, and we find that it agrees, up to a state-independent constant, with the generalized entropy. For spatially compact regions the algebra is type II$_1$, implying the existence of an entropy maximizing state, which realizes a version of Jacobson's entanglement equilibrium hypothesis. The construction relies on the existence of well-motivated but conjectural states whose modular flow is geometric at an instant in time. Our results generalize the recent work of Chandrasekaran, Longo, Penington, and Witten on an algebra of operators for the static patch of de Sitter space.

Abstract:The notions of entropy sequences and entropy sets are introduced both in topological and measure-theoretical situations. It turns out that a subset is an entropy set if and only if each n-tuple (not on the diagonal) from the set is an entropy n-tuple and that each maximal entropy set is closed. The systems with only one maximal entropy set are characterized. Moreover, it is proved that if a topological system has positive entropy, then there is a maximal entropy set with uncountably many points, and the topological entropy is the supremum of the entropies over all maximal entropy sets. An example with a maximal entropy set containing only two points is given.

Abstract:The entanglement properties of random quantum states or dynamics are important to the study of a broad spectrum of disciplines of physics, ranging from quantum information to high energy and many-body physics. This Letter investigates the interplay between the degrees of entanglement and randomness in pure states and unitary channels. We reveal strong connections between designs (distributions of states or unitaries that match certain moments of the uniform Haar measure) and generalized entropies (entropic functions that depend on certain powers of the density operator), by showing that Rényi entanglement entropies averaged over designs of the same order are almost maximal. This strengthens the celebrated Page's theorem. Moreover, we find that designs of an order that is logarithmic in the dimension maximize all Rényi entanglement entropies and so are completely random in terms of the entanglement spectrum. Our results relate the behaviors of Rényi entanglement entropies to the complexity of scrambling and quantum chaos in terms of the degree of randomness, and suggest a generalization of the fast scrambling conjecture.
Geometric Quantum States Beyond AdS/CFT

Abstract:We characterize the quantum states dual to entanglement wedges in arbitrary spacetimes, in settings where the matter entropy can be neglected compared to the geometric entropy. In AdS/CFT, such states obey special entropy inequalities known as the holographic entropy cone. In particular, the mutual information of CFT subregions is monogamous (MMI). We extend this result to arbitrary spacetimes, using a recent proposal for the generalized entanglement wedge e(a) of a gravitating region a. Given independent input regions a, b, and c, we prove MMI: Area[e(a)]+Area[e(b)]+Area[e(c)]-Area[e(ab)]-Area[e(bc)]-Area[e(ca)]+Area[e(abc)] $\leq$ 0. We expect that the full holographic entropy cone can be extended to arbitrary spacetimes using similar methods.

Abstract:We review a new form of entropy suggested by us, with origin in mixing of states of systems due to interactions and deformations of phase cells. It is demonstrated that this nonextensive form also leads to asymmetric maximal entropy configurations unlike Shannon entropy. We discuss how, beginning with quantum entanglement of microsystems with one another and with the environment, one can obtain classical stochasticity for our form of entropy.

Abstract:The topological entropy of a topological dynamical system, introduced in a foundational paper by Adler, Konheim and McAndrew [Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 1965], is a nonnegative number that measures the uncertainty or disorder of the system. Comparing with positive entropy systems, zero entropy systems are much less understood. In order to distinguish between zero entropy systems, Huang and Ye [Adv. Math., 2009] introduced the concept of maximal pattern entropy of a topological dynamical system. At the heart of their analysis is a Sauer-Shelah type lemma. In the present paper, we provide a shorter and more conceptual proof of a strengthening of this lemma, and discuss its surprising connection between dynamical system, combinatorics and a recent breakthrough in communication complexity. We also improve one of the main results of Huang and Ye on the maximal pattern entropy of zero-dimensional systems, by proving a new Sauer-Shelah type lemma, which unifies and enhances various extremal results on VC-dimension, Natarajan dimension and Steele dimension.

Abstract:We extend our studies of holographic entropy inequalities to gapped phases of matter. For any number of regions, we determine the linear entropy inequalities satisfied by systems in which the entanglement entropy satisfies an exact area law. In particular, we find that all holographic entropy inequalities are valid in such systems. In gapped systems with topological order, the “cyclic inequalities” derived recently for the holo-graphic entanglement entropy generalize the Kitaev-Preskill formula for the topological entanglement entropy. Finally, we propose a candidate linear inequality for general 4-party quantum states.

Abstract:We discuss some general properties of the symmetry-resolved von-Neumann entanglement entropy in systems with particle number conservation and describe how to obtain the entanglement components from correlation functions for Gaussian systems. We introduce majorization as an important tool to derive entanglement bounds. As an application, we derive lower bounds both for the number and the configurational entropy for chiral and Cn-symmetric topological phases. In some cases, our considerations also lead to an improvement of the previously known lower bounds for the entanglement entropy in such systems.
