Abstract:In this paper, we characterize entropy functions on the 2-dimensional faces of the polymatroidal region $\Gamma_4$. We enumerate all 59 types of 2-dimensional faces of $\Gamma_4$ and fully characterized entropy functions on 27 types of them, among which 4 types are non-trivial.

Abstract:Matroidal entropy functions are entropy functions in the form h = log v·rM, where v ≥ 2 is an integer and rM is the rank function of a matroid M. They can be applied into capacity chracterization and code construction of information theory problems such as network coding, secret sharing, index coding and locally repairable code. In this paper, by constructing the variable strength orthogonal arrays of some matroid operations, we characterize matroidal entropy functions induced by regular matroids and some matroids with the same p-characteristic set as uniform matroid U2,4.

Abstract:In this paper we consider random dynamical systems generated by compositions of one-sided independent and identically distributed random diffeomorphisms of class C-2 on a compact manifold. We prove an entropy formula for such random dynamical systems without assuming the SRB condition. This result is the random version of the main result obtained by Ledrappier and Young (The metric entropy of diffeomorphisms. Part II: Relations between entropy, exponents and dimension. Ann. Abstract:Past work shows that one can associate a notion of Shannon entropy to a Dirichlet polynomial, regarded as an empirical distribution. Indeed, entropy can be extracted from any d:Dir by a two-step process, where the first step is a rig homomorphism out of Dir, the *set* of Dirichlet polynomials, with rig structure given by standard addition and multiplication. In this short note, we show that this rig homomorphism can be upgraded to a rig *functor*, when we replace the set of Dirichlet polynomials by the *category* of ordinary (Cartesian) polynomials. In the Cartesian case, the process has three steps. The first step is a rig functor PolyCart -> Poly sending a polynomial p to (dp)y, where dp is the derivative of p. The second is a rig functor Poly -> Set x Set^op, sending a polynomial q to the pair (q(1),Gamma(q)), where Gamma(q)=Poly(q,y) can be interpreted as the global sections of q viewed as a bundle, and q(1) as its base. To make this precise we define what appears to be a new distributive monoidal structure on Set x Set^op, which can be understood geometrically in terms of rectangles. The last step, as for Dirichlet polynomials, is simply to extract the entropy as a real number from a pair of sets (A,B); it is given by log A - log B^(1/A) and can be thought of as the log aspect ratio of the rectangle.

Abstract:The enumeration of perfect matchings of graphs is equivalent to the dimer problem which has applications in statistical physics. A graph $G$ is said to be $n$-rotation symmetric if the cyclic group of order $n$ is a subgroup of the automorphism group of $G$. Jockusch (Perfect matchings and perfect squares, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 67(1994), 100-115) and Kuperberg (An exploration of the permanent-determinant method, Electron. J. Combin., 5(1998), #46) proved independently that if $G$ is a plane bipartite graph of order $N$ with $2n$-rotation symmetry, then the number of perfect matchings of $G$ can be expressed as the product of $n$ determinants of order $N/2n$. In this paper we give this result a new presentation. We use this result to compute the entropy of a bulk plane bipartite lattice with $2n$-notation symmetry. We obtain explicit expressions for the numbers of perfect matchings and entropies for two types of cylinders. Using the results on the entropy of the torus obtained by Kenyon, Okounkov, and Sheffield (Dimers and amoebae, Ann. Math. 163(2006), 1019--1056) and by Salinas and Nagle (Theory of the phase transition in the layered hydrogen-bonded $SnCl^2\cdot 2H_2O$ crystal, Phys. Rev. B, 9(1974), 4920--4931), we show that each of the cylinders considered and its corresponding torus have the same entropy. Finally, we pose some problems.

Abstract:We present an entropy formula of Ledrappier-Young type for invariant measures (maybe non-SRB) of C(2) endomorphisms (maybe non-invertible and with singularities) on a compact manifold via their inverse limit spaces. This result may be considered as the most general form of entropy formula for a deterministic system with an invariant measure, and a preliminary step to Eckmann-Ruelle conjecture. As an important application, we have proved the exact dimensionality of ergodic measures invariant under expanding maps.

Abstract:The closure of the set of entropy functions associated with n discrete variables, Gammar*n, is a convex cone in (2n-1)- dimensional space, but its full characterization remains an open problem. In this paper, we map Gammar*n to an n-dimensional region Phi*n by averaging the joint entropies with the same number of variables, and show that the simpler Phi*n can be characterized solely by the Shannon-type information inequalities

Abstract:In this paper, firstly we show that the entropy constants of the number of independent sets on certain plane lattices are the same as the entropy constants of the corresponding cylindrical and toroidal lattices. Secondly, we consider three more complex lattices which can not be handled by a single transfer matrix as in the plane quadratic lattice case. By introducing the concept of transfer multiplicity, we obtain the lower and upper bounds of the entropy constants of crossed quadratic lattice, generalized aztec diamond lattice and 8-8-4 lattice.

To Define the Core Entropy for All Polynomials Having a Connected Julia Set

Abstract:The classical core entropy for a post critically finite (PCF) polynomial f with deg(f)>1 is defined to be the topological entropy of f restricted to its Hubbard tree. We fully generalize this notion by a new quantity, called the (general) core entropy, which is well defined whenever f has a connected Julia set. If f is PCF, the core entropy equals the classical version. If two polynomials are J-equivalent they share the same core entropy. If f is renormalizable there is a direct connection between the core entropy of f and that corresponding to the small Julia set. We also analyze the map that sends every parameter c in the Mandelbrot set to the core entropy of the polynomial z^2+c. In particular, the level set of this entropy map at log2 is of full harmonic measure and the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at each point in this level set.

Abstract:We use the measure theoretical entropy from Vivas-Sirvent and the topological entropies from Dinh-Sibony and Kelly-Tennant to prove that the equidistribution measures $\mu_-$ and $\mu_+$ found by the author maximize entropy for the $1$-parameter family $\lbrace\mathcal{F}_a\rbrace_a$ studied by Bullett-Lomonaco. We find as well a measure of maximal entropy for the composition of two deleted covering correspondences studied by Bullett.

Abstract:The generating function for polygons on the square lattice has been known for many decades and is closely related to the path integral formulation of a free fermion model. On the cubic and hypercubic lattices the generating function is still unknown and the problem remains open. It has been conjectured that the three-dimensional (3D) and higher dimensional problems are not solvable—or, to be more precise, that there are no differentiably finite ( D -finite) solutions. In this context, very recently a Berezin integral of an exponentiated Grassmann action was found for the polygon generating function on the cubic lattice, making explicit the connection between 3D polygons and a model of interacting fermions. Here we address the problem of how to generalize the 3D result to higher dimensions. We derive a Grassmann representation in terms of a Berezin integral for the generating function of polygons on d -dimensional hypercubic lattices. On the one hand, this new result admittedly brings us no closer to the problem of finding an explicit analytic expression for the desired generating function for polygons. On the other hand, however, the significant advance reported here precisely quantifies the remarkable mathematical difficulty of finding the explicit generating function. Indeed, the non-quadratic functional form of the Grassmann action that we derive here provides a very clear picture of the formidable mathematical obstruction that would need to be overcome. Specifically, in d dimensions, the Grassmann action contains terms of degree , so the model describes interacting rather than free fermions. It is an open problem whether or not these models of interacting fermions can in principle be free fermionized through some still undiscovered algebraic method, but it is widely believed that this goal is mathematically impossible.

Abstract:The paper considers ribbon tilings of large regions and their per-tile entropy (the logarithm of the number of tilings divided by the number of tiles). For tilings of general regions by ribbon tiles of length $n$, we give an upper bound on the per-tile entropy as $n - 1$. For growing rectangular regions, we prove the existence of the asymptotic per-tile entropy and show that it is bounded from below by $\log_2 (n/e)$ and from above by $\log_2(en)$. For growing generalized "Aztec Diamond'' regions and for growing "stair'' regions, the asymptotic per-tile entropy is calculated exactly as $1/2$ and $\log_2(n + 1) - 1$, respectively.

Abstract:In the study of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, Ruelle derived explicit formulae for entropy production of smooth dynamical systems. The vanishing or strictly positivity of entropy production is determined by the entropy formula of folding type \[h_{\mu}(f)= F_{\mu}(f)-\displaystyle\int\sum\nolimits_{\lambda_i(f, x)<0} \lambda_i(f, x)d\mu(x), \] which relates the metric entropy, folding entropy and negative Lyapunov exponents. This paper establishes the formula for all $C^{1+\alpha}$ maps, including those with degeneracy. More specifically, the entropy formula of folding type holds if and, under a condition on the Jacobian of the map, only if $\mu$ has absolutely continuous conditional measures on the stable manifolds. To overcome the degeneracy, the Pesin Theory for general $C^{1+\alpha}$ maps is developed.

Abstract:We derive a characterization of the complex projective K3 surfaces which have automorphisms of positive entropy in terms of their Néron–Severi lattices. Along the way, we classify the projective K3 surfaces of zero entropy with infinite automorphism groups and we determine the projective K3 surfaces of Picard number at least five with almost abelian automorphism groups, which gives an answer to a long standing question of Nikulin.

Abstract:Coloring the faces of 2-dimensional square lattice with $k$ distinct colors such that no two adjacent faces have the same color is considered by establishing connection between the $k$ coloring problem and a generalized vertex model. Associating the colors with $k$ distinct species of particles with infinite repulsive force between nearest neighbors of the same type and zero chemical potential $\mu$ associated with each species, the number of ways $[W(k)]^N$ for large $N$ is related to the entropy of the {\it{hard square lattice gas}} at close packing of the lattice, where $N$ is the number of lattice sites. We discuss the evaluation of $W(k)$ using transfer matrix method with non-periodic boundary conditions imposed on at least one dimension and show the characteristic Toeplitz block structure of the transfer matrix. Using this result, we present some analytical calculations for non-periodic models that remain finite in one dimension. The case $k=3$ is found to approach the exact result obtained by Lieb for the residual entropy of ice with periodic boundary conditions. Finally, we show, by explicit calculation of the contribution of subgraphs and the series expansion of $W(k)$, that the genenralized Pauling type estimate(which is based on mean field approximation) dominates at large values of $k$. We thus also provide an alternative series expansion for the chromatic polynomial of a regular square graph.

Abstract:We introduce an inhomogeneous model of free fermions on a $(D-1)$-dimensional lattice with $D(D-1)/2$ continuous parameters that control the hopping strength between adjacent sites. We solve this model exactly, and find that the eigenfunctions are given by multidimensional generalizations of Krawtchouk polynomials. We construct a Heun operator that commutes with the chopped correlation matrix, and compute the entanglement entropy numerically for $D=2,3,4$, for a wide range of parameters. For $D=2$, we observe oscillations in the sub-leading contribution to the entanglement entropy, for which we conjecture an exact expression. For $D>2$, we find logarithmic violations of the area law for the entanglement entropy with nontrivial dependence on the parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, entropies, including measure-theoretic entropy and topological entropy, are considered for random $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions which are generated by random compositions of the generators of $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions. Applying Pesin's theory for commutative diffeomorphisms we obtain a measure-theoretic entropy formula of $C^{2}$ random $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions via the Lyapunov spectra of the generators. Some formulas and bounds of topological entropy for certain random $\mathbb{Z}^k$(or $\mathbb{Z}_+^k$ )-actions generated by more general maps, such as Lipschitz maps, continuous maps on finite graphs and $C^{1}$ expanding maps, are also obtained. Moreover, as an application, we give a formula of Friedland's entropy for certain $C^{2}$ $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions.

Abstract:We determine Furstenberg entropy spectra of ergodic stationary actions of $SL(d,\mathbb{R})$ and its lattices. The constraints on entropy spectra are derived from a refinement of the Nevo-Zimmer projective factor theorem. The realisation part is achieved by means of building Poisson bundles over stationary random subgroups.
