Abstract: The $L_p$-Minkowski problem deals with the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with prescribed $p$-area measures. It extends the classical Minkowski problem and embraces several important geometric and physical applications. The Existence of solutions has been obtained in the sub-critical case $p>-n-1$, but the problem remains widely open in the super-critical case $p<-n-1$. In this paper, we introduce new ideas to solve the problem for all the super-critical exponents. A crucial ingredient in our proof is a topological method based on the calculation of the homology of a topological space of ellipsoids.
On a finite sum of cosecants appearing in various problems

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the finite sum of cosecants $\sum\csc\big(\varphi+a\pi l/n\big),$ where the index $l$ runs through 1 to $n-1$ and $\varphi$ and $a$ are arbitrary parameters, as well as several closely related sums, such as similar sums of a series of secants, of tangents and of cotangents. These trigonometric sums appear in various problems in mathematics, physics, and a variety of related disciplines. Their particular cases were fragmentarily considered in previous works, and it was noted that even a simple particular case $\sum\csc\big(\pi l/n\big)$ does not have a closed-form, i.e. a compact summation formula. In the paper, we derive several alternative representations for the above-mentioned sums, study their properties, relate them to many other finite and infinite sums, obtain their complete asymptotic expansions for large $n$ and provide accurate upper and lower bounds (e.g. the typical relative error for the upper bound is lesser than $2\times10^{-9}$ for $n\geqslant10$ and lesser than $7\times10^{-14}$ for $n\geqslant50$, which is much better than the bounds we could find in previous works). Our researches reveal that these sums are deeply related to several special numbers and functions, especially to the digamma function (furthermore, as a by-product, we obtain several interesting summations formulae for the digamma function). Asymptotical studies show that these sums may have qualitatively different behaviour depending on the choice of $\varphi$ and $a$; in particular, as $n$ increases some of them may become sporadically large. Finally, we also provide several historical remarks related to various sums considered in the paper. We show that some results in the field either were rediscovered several times or can easily be deduced from various known formulae, including some formulae dating back to the XVIIIth century.

Abstract:N. G. de Bruijn (1958) studied the asymptotic expansion of iterates of sin$(x)$ with $0 < x \leq \pi/2$. Bencherif & Robin (1994) generalized this result to increasing analytic functions $f(x)$ with an attractive fixed point at 0 and $x > 0$ suitably small. Mavecha & Laohakosol (2013) formulated an algorithm for explicitly deriving required parameters. We review their method, testing it initally on the logistic function $\ell(x)$, a certain radical function $r(x)$, and later on several transcendental functions. Along the way, we show how $\ell(x)$ and $r(x)$ are kindred functions; the same is also true for sin$(x)$ and arcsinh$(x)$.

Abstract:We study asymptotic behaviors of solutions to the LoewnerNirenberg problem in finite cones and establish optimal asymptotic expansions in terms of the corresponding solutions in infinite cones. The spherical domains over which cones are formed are allowed to have singularities. An elliptic operator on such spherical domains with coefficients singular on the boundary plays an important role. Due to the singularity of the spherical domains, extra care is needed for the study of the global regularity of the eigenfunctions and solutions of the associated singular Dirichlet problem. Abstract:We present several new inequalities for trigonometric sums. Among others, we show that the inequality $$ \sum_{k=1}^n (n-k+1)(n-k+2)k\sin(kx) > \frac{2}{9} \sin(x) \bigl( 1+2\cos(x) \bigr)^2 $$ holds for all $n\geq 1$ and $x\in (0, 2\pi/3)$. The constant factor $2/9$ is sharp. This refines the classical Szegö-Schweitzer inequality which states that the sine sum is positive for all $n\geq 1$ and $x\in (0,2 \pi/3)$. Moreover, as an application of one of our results, we obtain a two-parameter class of absolutely monotonic functions.

A Curious Trigonometric Infinite Product in Context

Abstract:By treating the multiple argument identity of the logarithm of the Gamma function as a functional equation, we obtain a curious infinite product representation of the $sinc$ function in terms of the cotangent function. This result is believed to be new. It is then shown how to convert the infinite product to a finite product, which turns out to be a simple telescoping of the double angle $sin$ function. In general, this result unifies known infinite product identities involving various trigonometric functions when the product term index appears as an exponent. In one unusual case, what appears to be a straightforward limit, suggests a counterexample to Weierstrass' factor theorem. A resolution is offered. An Appendix presents the general solution to a simple functional equation. This work is motivated by its educational interest.

Abstract:Let f be a sum of exponentials of the form exp(2 pi i N x), where the N are distinct integers. We call f an idempotent trigonometric polynomial (because the convolution of f with itself is f) or, simply, an idempotent. We show that for every p > 1, and every set E of the torus T = R/Z with |E| > 0, there are idempotents concentrated on E in the Lp sense. More precisely, for each p > 1, there is an explicitly calculated constant Cp > 0 so that for each E with |E| > 0 and epsilon > 0 one can find an idempotent f such that the pth root of the ratio of the integral over E of the pth power of |f| to the integral over T of the pth power of |f| is greater than Cp - epsilon. This is in fact a lower bound result and, though not optimal, it is close to the best that our method gives. We also give both heuristic and computational evidence for the still open problem of whether the Lp concentration phenomenon fails to occur when p = 1.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a method to approximate the Gaussian function on ${\mathbb R}$ by a short cosine sum. We extend the differential approximation method proposed in [4,39] to approximate $\mathrm{e}^{-t^{2}/2\sigma}$ in the weighted space $L_2({\mathbb R}, \mathrm{e}^{-t^{2}/2\rho})$ where $\sigma, \, \rho >0$. We prove that the optimal frequency parameters $\lambda_1, \ldots , \lambda_{N}$ for this method in the approximation problem $ \min\limits_{\lambda_{1},\ldots, \lambda_{N}, \gamma_{1} \ldots \gamma_{N}}\|\mathrm{e}^{-\cdot^{2}/2\sigma} - \sum\limits_{j=1}^{N} \gamma_{j} \, {\mathrm e}^{\lambda_{j} \cdot}\|_{L_{2}({\mathbb R}, \mathrm{e}^{-t^{2}/2\rho})}$, are zeros of a scaled Hermite polynomial. This observation leads us to a numerically stable approximation method with low computational cost of $\mathit{O}(N^{3})$ operations. Furthermore, we derive a direct algorithm to solve this approximation problem based on a matrix pencil method for a special structured matrix. The entries of this matrix are determined by hypergeometric functions. For the weighted $L_{2}$-norm, we prove that the approximation error decays exponentially with respect to the length $N$ of the sum. An exponentially decaying error in the (unweighted) $L^{2}$-norm is achieved using a truncated cosine sum.
