Abstract:We study the notion of inhomogeneous Poissonian pair correlations, proving several properties that show similarities and differences to its homogeneous counterpart. In particular, we show that sequences with inhomogeneous Poissonian pair correlations need not be uniformly distributed, contrary to what was till recently believed.

Abstract:The pair correlation statistic is an important concept in real uniform distribution theory. Therefore, sequences in the unit interval with (weak) Poissonian pair correlations have attracted a lot of attention in recent time. The aim of this paper is to suggest a generalization to the p-adic integers and to prove some of its main properties. In particular, connections to the theory of p-adic discrepancy theory are discussed.

Abstract:In this article we study the pair correlation statistic for higher dimensional sequences. We show that for any d ≥ 2 , strictly increasing sequences ( a n ( 1 ) ) , … , ( a n ( d ) ) of natural numbers have metric Poissonian pair correlation with respect to sup-norm if their joint additive energy is O ( N 3 − δ ) for any δ > 0 . Further, in dimension two, we establish an analogous result with respect to the 2-norm. As a consequence, it follows that ( { n α } , { n 2 β } ) and ( { n α } , { [ n log A ⁡ n ] β } ) ( A ∈ [ 1 , 2 ] ) have Poissonian pair correlation for almost all ( α , β ) ∈ R 2 with respect to sup-norm and 2-norm. This gives a negative answer to the question raised by Hofer and Kaltenböck [15]. The proof uses estimates for ‘Generalized’ GCD-sums.

Abstract:Poissonian pair correlations have sparked interest within the mathematical community, because of their number theoretic properties, and their connections to quantum physics and probability theory, particularly uniformly distributed random numbers. Rather recently, several generalizations of the concept have been introduced, including weak Poissonian pair correlations and $k$-th order Poissonian correlations. In this paper, we propose a new generalized concept called $(k,m,\beta)$-Poissonian box correlations. We study their properties and more specifically their relation to uniform distribution theory, discrepancy theory, random numbers and gap distributions.

Abstract:Finding explicit examples of sequences $(x_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ with Poissonian pair correlations (PPC) turns out to be a difficult problem. Therefore, this property is often studied in a random setting. While it is known that i.i.d. sequences of uniformly distributed random variables generically have Poissonian pair correlations, the case of dependent random variables has not been addressed in the literature yet. The present paper is the first contribution dealing with the dependent setting. More specifically, sequences of jittered samples and random walks on the torus are investigated. We show here that for the former class, the PPC property depends on how the finite sample is extended to an infinite sequence. Moreover, we prove that the random walk on the torus generically has PPC.

Abstract:It is well known that a sequence (xn)n∈N⊆[0,1] which has Poissonian correlations of all orders necessarily has exponentially distributed nearest‐neighbor gaps. It is natural to ask whether this implication also holds in the other direction, that is, whether a sequence with exponential gap distribution must have Poissonian correlations, and by an already known fact, must be equidistributed. We show that this assertion is generally false, by constructing a sequence that has exponential gap distribution but fails to be equidistributed (and as a consequence, also fails to have Poissonian correlations of any order and scale).

Abstract:Exchangeable sequences of random probability measures (partitions of mass) and their corresponding exchangeable bridges play an important role in a variety of areas in probability, statistics and related areas, including Bayesian statistics, physics, finance and machine learning. An area of theoretical as well as practical interest, is the study of coagulation and fragmentation operators on partitions of mass. In this regard, an interesting but formidable question is the identification of operators and distributional families on mass partitions that exhibit interesting duality relations. In this paper we identify duality relations for a large sub-class of mixed Poisson-Kingman models generated by a stable subordinator. Our results are natural generalizations of the duality relations developed in Pitman, Bertoin and Goldschmidt, and Dong, Goldschmidt and Martin for the two-parameter Poisson Dirichlet family. These results are deduced from results for corresponding bridges.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the fine-scale statistics of real-valued arithmetic sequences. In particular, we focus on real-valued vector sequences and show the Poissonian behavior of the pair correlation function for certain classes of such sequences, thereby extending previous works of Boca et al. and the first author on local statistics of integer-valued and rational-valued vector sequences.

On some integrable models in inhomogeneous space

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to build a framework that allows for an in-depth study of various generalisations to inhomogeneous space of models of Borodin-Ferrari, Dieker-Warren, Nordenstam, Warren-Windridge of interacting particles in interlacing arrays, both in discrete and continuous time, involving both Bernoulli and geometric jumps. The models can in addition be either time-inhomogeneous or particle-inhomogeneous. We show that the correlation functions of these models are determinantal and using this we prove a short-time asymptotic for these dynamics to the discrete Bessel point process. We moreover prove a number of closely related results. We prove that the autonomous, inhomogeneous in space and time, TASEP-like and pushTASEP-like particle systems on the edges of the array have explicit transition kernels and that from any deterministic initial condition their distributions are marginals of a determinantal measure. We prove a novel duality relation between dynamics in inhomogeneous space and dynamics with inhomogeneities on the level of the array. We extend the work of Nordenstam on the shuffling algorithm for domino tilings of the Aztec diamond and its relation to push-block dynamics in interlacing arrays to general weights on the tilings and then connect this, for a special class of weights, back to our previous results. We also consider non-intersecting walks in inhomogeneous space and time with fixed starting and end points and obtain a formula for their correlation functions, involving among other ingredients, an explicit Riemann-Hilbert problem. We then prove a limit theorem for the bottom lines in this line-ensemble, under some technical conditions. The main computational tool throughout this work is a natural generalisation of a Toeplitz matrix, that we call inhomogeneous Toeplitz-like matrix $\mathsf{T}_{\mathbf{f}}$ with (a possibly matrix-valued) symbol $\mathbf{f}$.

Abstract:We consider invariant measures of maps on manifolds whose correlations decay at a sufficient rate and which satisfy a geometric contraction property. We then prove the that the limiting distribution of returns to geometric balls is Poissonian. This does not assume an tower construction. The decay of correlations is used to show that the independence generated results in the Poisson distribution for returns that are sufficiently separated. A geometric contraction property is then used to show that short return times have a vanishing contribution to the return times distribution. We then also show that the set of very short returns which are of a small linear order of the logarithm of the radius of the balls has a vanishing measure. We obtain error terms which decay polynomially in the logarithm of the radius. We also obtain a extreme value law for such systems.

Abstract:In this article, we examine the Poissonian pair correlation (PPC) statistic for higher dimensional real sequences. Specifically, we demonstrate that for d⩾3 , almost all (α1,...,αd)∈Rd , the sequence ({xnα1},⋯,{xnαd}) in [0,1)d has PPC conditionally on the additive energy bound of (xn) . This bound is more relaxed compared to the additive energy bound for one dimension as discussed in [Aistleitner, El‐Baz, and Munsch, Geom. Funct. Anal. 31 (2021), 483–512]. More generally, we derive the PPC for ({xn(1)α1},⋯,{xn(d)αd})∈[0,1)d for almost all (α1,...,αd)∈Rd . As a consequence we establish the metric PPC for (nθ1,...,nθd) provided that all of the θi are greater than two.

Correlations at higher-order exceptional points in non-Hermitian models

Abstract:We investigate the decay of spatial correlations of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric non-Hermitian one-dimensional models that host higher-order exceptional points. Beyond a certain correlation length, they develop anomalous power-law behavior that indicates strong suppression of correlations in the non-Hermitian setups as compared to the Hermitian ones. The correlation length is also reflected in the entanglement entropy where it marks a change from logarithmic growth at short distance to a constant value at large distance, characteristic of an insulator, despite the spectrum being gapless. Two different families of models are investigated, both having a similar spectrum constrained by particle-hole symmetry. The first model offers an experimentally attractive way to generate arbitrary higher-order exceptional points and represents a non-Hermitian extension of the Dirac Hamiltonian for general spin. At the critical point it displays a decay of the correlations $\sim 1/x^2$ and $1/x^3$ irrespective of the order of the exceptional point. The second model is constructed using unidirectional hopping and displays enhanced suppression of correlations $\sim 1/x^a$, $a\ge 2$ with a power law that depends on the order of the exceptional point.

Full Poissonian Local Statistics of Slowly Growing Sequences

Abstract:Fix $\alpha>0$, then by Fejér's theorem $ (\alpha(\log n)^{A}\,\mathrm{mod}\,1)_{n\geq1}$ is uniformly distributed if and only if $A>1$. We sharpen this by showing that all correlation functions, and hence the gap distribution, are Poissonian provided $A>1$. This is the first example of a deterministic sequence modulo one whose gap distribution, and all of whose correlations are proven to be Poissonian. The range of $A$ is optimal and complements a result of Marklof and Strömbergsson who found the limiting gap distribution of $(\log(n)\, \mathrm{mod}\,1)$, which is necessarily not Poissonian.

On Pauli pairs and Fourier uniqueness problems

Abstract:We investigate the concept of Pauli pairs and a discrete counterpart to it. In particular, we make substantial progress on the question of when a discrete Pauli pair is automatically a classical Pauli pair. Effectively, if one of the functions has space and frequency Gaussian decay, and one has that $|f| = |g|$ and $|\widehat{f}| = |\widehat{g}|$ on two sets which accumulate like suitable small multiples of $\sqrt{n}$ at infinity, then $|f| \equiv |g|$ and $|\widehat{f}| = |\widehat{g}|.$ Furthermore, we show that if one drops either the assumption that one of the functions has space-frequency decay or that the discrete sets accumulate at a high rate, then the desired property no longer holds. Our techniques are inspired by and directly connected to several recent results in the realm of Fourier uniqueness problems, and our results may be seen as a nonlinear generalization of those. As a consequence of said techniques, we are able to prove a sharp discrete version of Hardy's uncertainty principle.

Abstract:We investigate the decay rates of correlations for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems with or without singularities, on piecewise Hölder observables. By constructing a new scheme of coupling methods using the probability renewal theory, we obtain the optimal bounds for decay rates of correlations for a large class of such observables. We also establish the alpha-mixing property for time series generated by these systems, which leads to a vast ranges of limiting theorems. Our results apply to rather general hyperbolic systems with singularities, including Bunimovich flower billiards, semidispersing billiards on a rectangle and billiards with cusps, and other nonuniformly hyperbolic maps.
