Abstract:Consider the Hermite β ensemble, a variant of the classical Gaussian unitary ensemble. Using Dumitriu and Edelman’s matrix model representation, we first calculate the generating function of the second-order correlation of characteristic polynomials. Then we obtain the asymptotic behaviors of the second-order correlation of characteristic polynomials both in the bulk (0<β<4) and at the edge (β>0). Analogs have recently been studied by Götze and Kösters for general Hermitian (real) Wigner matrices.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a natural generalization of correlation order to higher dimensions, which has been investigated by Dhaene and Goovaerts [ASTIN Bulletin 26 (1996) 201] for the bivariate case. We show that the correlation order is stronger than upper orthant order and lower orthant order so that it implies stop-loss order. This extends the results of Dhaene and Goovaerts [ASTIN Bulletin 26 (1996) 201]. Moreover, we give some properties of correlation order and its application to premium calculation principle, which also extends some results of Wang and Dhaene [Insurance: Mathematics and Economics 22 (1998) 235].

Abstract:Most correlation inequalities for high-dimensional functions in the literature, such as the Fortuin-Kasteleyn-Ginibre (FKG) inequality and the celebrated Gaussian Correlation Inequality of Royen, are qualitative statements which establish that any two functions of a certain type have non-negative correlation. In this work we give a general approach that can be used to bootstrap many qualitative correlation inequalities for functions over product spaces into quantitative statements. The approach combines a new extremal result about power series, proved using complex analysis, with harmonic analysis of functions over product spaces. We instantiate this general approach in several different concrete settings to obtain a range of new and near-optimal quantitative correlation inequalities, including: $\bullet$ A quantitative version of Royen's celebrated Gaussian Correlation Inequality. Royen (2014) confirmed a conjecture, open for 40 years, stating that any two symmetric, convex sets must be non-negatively correlated under any centered Gaussian distribution. We give a lower bound on the correlation in terms of the vector of degree-2 Hermite coefficients of the two convex sets, analogous to the correlation bound for monotone Boolean functions over $\{0,1\}^n$ obtained by Talagrand (1996). $\bullet$ A quantitative version of the well-known FKG inequality for monotone functions over any finite product probability space, generalizing the quantitative correlation bound for monotone Boolean functions over $\{0,1\}^n$ obtained by Talagrand (1996). The only prior generalization of which we are aware is due to Keller (2008, 2009, 2012), which extended Talagrand's result to product distributions over $\{0,1\}^n$. We also give two different quantitative versions of the FKG inequality for monotone functions over the continuous domain $[0,1]^n$, answering a question of Keller (2009).

Abstract:Assuming that a function and its Fourier transform are dominated by a Gaussian, Vemuri found a sharp estimate for the decay rate of the Hermite coefficients in terms of the variance of the dominating Gaussian. Here we show that under the same assumptions, certain combinations of Hermite coefficients have a better rate of decay.

Abstract:In this article we study the pair correlation statistic for higher dimensional sequences. We show that for any d ≥ 2 , strictly increasing sequences ( a n ( 1 ) ) , … , ( a n ( d ) ) of natural numbers have metric Poissonian pair correlation with respect to sup-norm if their joint additive energy is O ( N 3 − δ ) for any δ > 0 . Further, in dimension two, we establish an analogous result with respect to the 2-norm. As a consequence, it follows that ( { n α } , { n 2 β } ) and ( { n α } , { [ n log A ⁡ n ] β } ) ( A ∈ [ 1 , 2 ] ) have Poissonian pair correlation for almost all ( α , β ) ∈ R 2 with respect to sup-norm and 2-norm. This gives a negative answer to the question raised by Hofer and Kaltenböck [15]. The proof uses estimates for ‘Generalized’ GCD-sums.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis and a pair correlation conjecture for the zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions, we establish the truth of a conjecture of Montgomery (in its corrected form stated by Friedlander and Granville) on the magnitude of the error term in the prime number theorem in arithmetic progressions. As a consequence, we obtain that, under the same assumptions, the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture holds true.

Abstract:We study the pair correlation between zeros of a shifted auxiliary $ L $-function attached to a non-CM newform, the scale of which is a fixed constant. We prove an unconditional asymptotic result for the pair correlation and introduce a simplicity hypothesis for the zeros of this function, which if true means that multiple zeros of the original $ L $-function cannot be separated by the same fixed distance. Our results provide macroscopic information in contrast to the pair correlation of the original $ L $-function which is of microscopic nature.

Abstract:The main goal of this article is to formulate a notion, called a generalized GGP relevant pair, governing the quotient branching law for $p$-adic general linear groups. Such notion relies on a commutation relation between derivatives (from Jacquet functors) and integrals (from parabolic inductions), for which we provide both representation-theoretic and combinatorial perspectives. Our main result proves a duality on those relevant pairs, which is compatible with a dual restriction in branching law.

This is optimal up to the $O_d(1)$ factor. Our proofs involve incidence geometric techniques as well as ideas surrounding the recent progress on Bourgain--Chang type sum-product estimates over $\mathbb{R}$. The latter includes Schmidt's subspace theorem and the resolution of the weak polynomial Freiman--Ruzsa conjecture over integers.

In particular, we focus on real-valued vector sequences and show the Poissonian behavior of the pair correlation function for certain classes of such sequences, thereby extending previous works of Boca et al. and the first author on local statistics of integer-valued and rational-valued vector sequences.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate asymmetric forms of Doob maximal inequality. The asymmetry is imposed by noncommutativity. Let (ℳ, τ) be a noncommutative probability space equipped with a filtration of von Neumann subalgebras (ℳ_n)_n ≥ 1 , whose union ⋃_n≥1ℳ_n is weak-* dense in ℳ . Let ℰ_n denote the corresponding family of conditional expectations. As an illustration for an asymmetric result, we prove that for 1 < p < 2 and x ∈ L_p(ℳ,τ) one can find a, b ∈ L_p(ℳ,τ) and contractions u_n, v_n ∈ℳ such that ℰ_n(x) = a u_n + v_n b and max{a_p,b_p }≤ c_p x_p. Moreover, it turns out that a u_n and v_n b converge in the row/column Hardy spaces ℋ_p^r(ℳ) and ℋ_p^c(ℳ) respectively. In particular, this solves a problem posed by the Defant and Junge in 2004 . In the case p = 1, our results establish a noncommutative form of the Davis celebrated theorem on the relation betwe en martingale maximal and square functions in L 1 , whose noncommutative form has remained open for quite some time. Given 1 ≤ p ≤ 2 , we also provide new weak type maximal estimates, which imply in turn left/right almost uniform convergence of ℰ_n(x) in row/column Hardy spaces. This improves the bilateral convergence known so far. Our approach is based on new forms of Davis martingale decomposition which are of independent interest, and an algebraic atomic description for the involved Hardy spaces. The latter results are new even for commutative von Neumann algebras.
