Abstract:We characterize the Archimedean solids among the convex uniform polyhedra via face embeddings into a regular Tetrahedron. This result has been listed without proof in the literature. As an application, we obtain a lattice packing of $\mathbb{R}^3$ by the truncated Icosahedron whose packing density is notably close to the optimal value obtained in [1].

Abstract:Herein, we discuss the existence of overlapping edge unfoldings for convex regular-faced polyhedra. Horiyama and Shoji showed that there are no overlapping edge unfoldings for all platonic solids and five of the Archimedean solids. The remaining five Archimedean solids were found to have edge unfoldings that overlap. In this study, we propose a method called rotational unfolding to find an overlapping edge unfolding of a polyhedron. We show that all the edge unfoldings of an icosidodecahedron, a rhombitruncated cuboctahedron, an n -gonal Archimedean prism ( 3≤n≤23 ), an m -gonal Archimedean antiprism ( 3≤m≤11 ), and 48 types of Johnson solids do not overlap. Our algorithm finds overlapping edge unfoldings for the snub cube, and 44 types of Johnson solids. We present analytic proof that an overlapping edge unfolding exists in an n -gonal Archimedean prism ( n≥24 ), and an m -gonal Archimedean antiprism ( m≥12 ). Our results prove the existence of overlapping edge unfoldings for convex regular-faced polyhedra.

Abstract:In 1900, as a part of his 18th problem, Hilbert proposed the question to determine the densest congruent (or translative) packings of a given solid, such as the unit ball or the regular tetrahedron of unit edges. Up to now, our knowledge about this problem is still very limited, excepting the ball case. It is conjectured that, for some particular solids such as tetrahedra, cuboctahedra, and octahedra, their maximal translative packing densities and their maximal lattice packing densities are identical. To attack this conjecture, this article suggests a computer approach to determine the maximal local translative packing density of a given polytope, by studying associated color graphs and applying optimization. In particular, all the tetrahedral case, the cuboctahedral case and the octahedral case of the conjecture have been reduced into finite numbers of manageable optimization problems.
Rationalizing Euclidean Assemblies of Hard Polyhedra from Tessellations in Curved Space

Abstract:Entropic self-assembly is governed by the shape of the constituent particles, yet a priori prediction of crystal structures from particle shape alone is non-trivial for anything but the simplest of space-filling shapes. At the same time, most polyhedra are not space-filling due to geometric constraints, but these constraints can be relaxed or even eliminated by sufficiently curving space. We show using Monte Carlo simulations that the majority of hard Platonic shapes self-assemble entropically into space-filling crystals when constrained to the surface volume of a 3-sphere. As we gradually decrease curvature to "flatten" space and compare the local morphologies of crystals assembling in curved and flat space, we show that the Euclidean assemblies can be categorized either as remnants of tessellations in curved space (tetrahedra and dodecahedra) or non-tessellation-based assemblies caused by large-scale geometric frustration (octahedra and icosahedra).

Upper Bound on the Packing Density of Regular Tetrahedra and Octahedra

Abstract:Aristotle contended that (regular) tetrahedra tile space, an opinion that remained widespread until it was observed that non-overlapping tetrahedra cannot subtend a solid angle of 4π around a point if this point lies on a tetrahedron edge. From this 15th century argument, we can deduce that tetrahedra do not tile space but, more than 500 years later, we are unaware of any known non-trivial upper bound to the packing density of tetrahedra. In this article, we calculate such a bound. To this end, we show the existence, in any packing of regular tetrahedra, of a set of disjoint spheres centered on tetrahedron edges, so that each sphere is not fully covered by the packing. The bound on the amount of space that is not covered in each sphere is obtained in a recursive way by building on the solid angle argument. The argument can be readily modified to apply to other polyhedra. The resulting lower bound on the fraction of empty space in a packing of regular tetrahedra is 2.6…×10−25 and reaches 1.4…×10−12 for regular octahedra.

Abstract:We study hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces with faces isometric to regular hyperbolic polygons satisfying that the total angles at vertices are at least 2 pi. The combinatorial information of these surfaces is shown to be identified with that of Euclidean polyhedral surfaces with negative combinatorial curvature everywhere. We prove that there is a gap between areas of non-smooth hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces and the area of smooth hyperbolic surfaces. The numerical result for the gap is obtained for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces, homeomorphic to the double torus, whose 1-skeletons are cubic graphs.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We study the problem of acute triangulations of convex polyhedra and the space R^n. Here an acute triangulation is a triangulation into simplices whose dihedral angles are acute. We prove that acute triangulations of the n-cube do not exist for n>=4. Further, we prove that acute triangulations of the space R^n do not exist for n>= 5. In the opposite direction, in R^3, we present a construction of an acute triangulation of the cube, the regular octahedron and a non-trivial acute triangulation of the regular tetrahedron. We also prove nonexistence of an acute triangulation of R^4 if all dihedral angles are bounded away from pi/2.

Abstract:A regular map is an abstract generalization of a Platonic solid. It describes a group, a topological cell decomposition of a 2-manifold of type {p, q} with only p-gons, such that q of them meet at each vertex in a circular manner, and we have maximal combinatorial symmetry, expressed by the flag transitivity of the symmetry group. On the one hand, we have articles on topological surface embeddings of regular maps by F. Razafindrazaka and K. Polthier, C. Séquin, and J. J. van Wijk.On the other hand, we have articles with polyhedral embeddings of regular maps by J. Bokowski and M. Cuntz, A. Boole Stott, U. Brehm, H. S. M. Coxeter, B. Grünbaum, E. Schulte, and J. M. Wills. The main concern of this partial survey article is to emphasize that all these articles should be seen as contributing to the common body of knowledge in the area of regular map embeddings. This article additionally provides a method for finding symmetrical equivelar polyhedral embeddings of type {3, 7} based on symmetrical graph embeddings on convex surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the geometry and the arithmetic of a family of polytopal sphere packings induced by regular polytopes in any dimension. We prove that every integral polytope is crystallographic, and we show that there are 11 crystallographic regular polytopes in any dimension. After introducing the notion of Apollonian section, we determine which Platonic crystallographic packings emerge as cross-sections of the Apollonian arrangements of the regular 4-polytopes. Additionally, we compute the Möbius spectrum of every regular polytope.

Abstract:For a finite planar graph, it associates with some metric spaces, called (regular) spherical polyhedral surfaces, by replacing faces with regular spherical polygons in the unit sphere and gluing them edge-to-edge. We consider the class of planar graphs which admit spherical polyhedral surfaces with the curvature bounded below by 1 in the sense of Alexandrov, i.e. the total angle at each vertex is at most $2pi$. We classify all spherical tilings with regular spherical polygons, i.e. total angles at vertices are exactly $2pi$. We prove that for any graph in this class which does not admit a spherical tiling, the area of the associated spherical polyhedral surface with the curvature bounded below by 1 is at most $4pi - epsilon_0$ for some $epsilon_0 u003e 0$. That is, we obtain a definite gap between the area of such a surface and that of the unit sphere.
An Extension of Heron's Formula to Tetrahedra, and the Projective Nature of Its Zeros

Abstract:A natural extension of Heron's 2000 year old formula for the area of a triangle to the volume of a tetrahedron is presented. This gives the fourth power of the volume as a polynomial in six simple rational functions of the areas of its four faces and three medial parallelograms, which will be referred to herein as "interior faces." Geometrically, these rational functions are the areas of the triangles into which the exterior faces are divided by the points at which the tetrahedron's in-sphere touches those faces. Part I presents an overview of these results and some necessary but little-known background in areal geometry. Part II derives the promised extension, and ends with a conjecture as to how the formula extends to $n$-dimensional simplices for all $n > 3$. Part III explains how, for $n = 3$, the zeros of the polynomial constitute a five-dimensional semi-algebraic variety consisting almost entirely of collinear tetrahedra with vertices separated by infinite distances, but with generically well-defined distance ratios; it further proves that these unconventional Euclidean configurations can be identified with a quotient of the Klein quadric by an action of a group of reflections isomorphic to $\mathbb Z_2^4$, wherein four-point configurations in the affine plane constitute a distinguished three-dimensional subvariety. Part IV consists of five appendices which show, among other things, that the algebraic structure of the zeros in the affine plane naturally defines the associated four-element, rank $3$ chirotope, aka affine oriented matroid.

Abstract:We analyze polyhedra composed of hexagons and triangles with three faces around each vertex, and their 3-regular planar graphs of edges and vertices, which we call "trihexes". Trihexes are analogous to fullerenes, which are 3-regular planar graphs whose faces are all hexagons and pentagons. Every trihex can be represented as the quotient of a hexagonal tiling of the plane under a group of isometries generated by rotations. Every trihex can also be described with either one or three "signatures": triples of numbers that describe the arrangement of the rotocenters of these rotations. Simple arithmetic rules relate the three signatures that describe the same trihex. We obtain a bijection between trihexes and equivalence classes of signatures as defined by these rules. Labeling trihexes with signatures allows us to put bounds on the number of trihexes for a given number of vertices v in terms of the prime factorization of v and to prove a conjecture concerning trihexes that have no "belts" of hexagons.

Abstract:For each surface besides the sphere, projective plane, and Klein bottle, we construct a face-simple minimal quadrangulation, i.e., a simple quadrangulation on the fewest number of vertices possible, whose dual is also a simple graph. Our result answers a question of Liu, Ellingham, and Ye while providing a simpler proof of their main result. The inductive construction is based on an earlier idea for finding near-quadrangular embeddings of the complete graphs using the diamond sum operation.

Aristotle's ErrorIn the history of mathematics, one of the earliest recorded mistakes was made by Aristotle.More than 2,300 years ago, Aristotle (384-322 BCE) taught that the regular tetrahedra fill space.In De Caelo (On the Heavens) Book III.8 he says (in translation): "Among surfaces it is agreed that there are three figures which fill the place that contain them-the triangle, the square and the hexagon: among solids only two, the pyramid and the cube" [3, 306b, p. 319].Here "pyramid" refers to the regular tetrahedron, a Platonic solid.Thus Aristotle's assertion can be taken to mean: space can be tiled by congruent regular tetrahedra.
Analytical Constructions of a Family of Dense Tetrahedron Packings and the Role of Symmetry

Abstract:The determination of the densest packings of regular tetrahedra (one of the five Platonic solids) is attracting great attention as evidenced by the rapid pace at which packing records are being broken and the fascinating packing structures that have emerged. We have discovered the densest known packings of regular tetrahedra with a density $\phi= {12250/14319} = 0.855506...$. These packings are special cases of an analytical two-parameter family of dense periodic packings with four particles per fundamental cell that we have constructed here. From this family, we can recover a set of recent packing arrangements due to Kallus {\it et al.} [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0910.5226" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0910.5226">arXiv:0910.5226</a>] with density $\phi={100/117}=0.854700...$, which has higher symmetry than our densest packings, We also describe a procedure that could lead to rigorous upper bounds on the maximal density of tetrahedron packings, which could aid in assessing the packing efficiency of candidate dense packings.

Abstract:In this paper we develop an integer-affine classification of three-dimensional multistory completely empty convex marked pyramids. We apply it to obtain the complete lists of compact two-dimensional faces of multidimensional continued fractions lying in planes with integer distances to the origin equal 2, 3, 4 ... The faces are considered up to the action of the group of integer-linear transformations. In conclusion we formulate some actual unsolved problems associated with the generalizations for n-dimensional faces and more complicated face configurations.

Abstract:We construct, for any positive integer n, a family of n congruent convex polyhedra in R^3, such that every pair intersects in a common facet. Previously, the largest such family contained only eight polytopes. Our polyhedra are Voronoi regions of evenly distributed points on the helix (t, cos t, sin t). With a simple modification, we can ensure that each polyhedron in the family has a point, a line, and a plane of symmetry. We also generalize our construction to higher dimensions and introduce a new family of cyclic polytopes.

Abstract:We construct perfect t-embeddings for regular hexagons of the hexagonal lattice, providing the first example, and hence proving existence, for graphs with an outer face of degree greater than four. The construction is in terms of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix and relies only on symmetries of the graph. Using known formulas for the inverse Kasteleyn matrix, we derive exact contour integral formulas for these embeddings and their origami maps. Through steepest descent analysis, we establish scaling limits, proving convergence of origami maps to a maximal surface in the Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{2,1}$, and we verify structural rigidity conditions, leading to a new proof of convergence of height fluctuations to the Gaussian free field.
