Abstract:Aristotle contended that (regular) tetrahedra tile space, an opinion that remained widespread until it was observed that non-overlapping tetrahedra cannot subtend a solid angle of 4π around a point if this point lies on a tetrahedron edge. From this 15th century argument, we can deduce that tetrahedra do not tile space but, more than 500 years later, we are unaware of any known non-trivial upper bound to the packing density of tetrahedra. In this article, we calculate such a bound. To this end, we show the existence, in any packing of regular tetrahedra, of a set of disjoint spheres centered on tetrahedron edges, so that each sphere is not fully covered by the packing. The bound on the amount of space that is not covered in each sphere is obtained in a recursive way by building on the solid angle argument. The argument can be readily modified to apply to other polyhedra. The resulting lower bound on the fraction of empty space in a packing of regular tetrahedra is 2.6…×10−25 and reaches 1.4…×10−12 for regular octahedra.

Abstract:The determination of the densest packings of regular tetrahedra (one of the five Platonic solids) is attracting great attention as evidenced by the rapid pace at which packing records are being broken and the fascinating packing structures that have emerged. We have discovered the densest known packings of regular tetrahedra with a density $\phi= {12250/14319} = 0.855506...$. These packings are special cases of an analytical two-parameter family of dense periodic packings with four particles per fundamental cell that we have constructed here. From this family, we can recover a set of recent packing arrangements due to Kallus {\it et al.} [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0910.5226" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0910.5226">arXiv:0910.5226</a>] with density $\phi={100/117}=0.854700...$, which has higher symmetry than our densest packings, We also describe a procedure that could lead to rigorous upper bounds on the maximal density of tetrahedron packings, which could aid in assessing the packing efficiency of candidate dense packings.

Exact Constructions of a Family of Dense Periodic Packings of Tetrahedra

Abstract:The determination of the densest packings of regular tetrahedra (one of the five Platonic solids) is attracting great attention as evidenced by the rapid pace at which packing records are being broken and the fascinating packing structures that have emerged. Here we provide the most general analytical formulation to date to construct dense periodic packings of tetrahedra with four particles per fundamental cell. This analysis results in six-parameter family of dense tetrahedron packings that includes as special cases recently discovered "dimer" packings of tetrahedra, including the densest known packings with density $\phi= 4000/4671 = 0.856347...$. This study strongly suggests that the latter set of packings are the densest among all packings with a four-particle basis. Whether they are the densest packings of tetrahedra among all packings is an open question, but we offer remarks about this issue. Moreover, we describe a procedure that provides estimates of upper bounds on the maximal density of tetrahedron packings, which could aid in assessing the packing efficiency of candidate dense packings.

Abstract:We present a new order metric for tetrahedral particle packing, which is observed to have a strong linear correlation with the packing density. We propose the concept of quasi-random packing to represent the hierarchical random packing structure of clusters. We also find that the nematic order of clusters can be used to classify the ordered and disordered packing of tetrahedra, which is also an indicator for quasi-random packing.

Abstract:The densest packing of tetrahedra is still an unsolved problem. Numerical simulations of random close packing of tetrahedra are carried out with a sphere assembly model and improved relaxation algorithm. The packing density and average contact number obtained for random close packing of regular tetrahedra is 0.6817 and 7.21 respectively, while the values of spheres are 0.6435 and 5.95. The simulation demonstrates that tetrahedra can be randomly packed denser than spheres. Random close packings of tetrahedra with a range of height are simulated as well. We find that the regular tetrahedron might be the optimal shape which gives the highest packing density of tetrahedra.

Abstract:In 1900, as a part of his 18th problem, Hilbert asked the question to determine the density of the densest tetrahedron packings. However, up to now no mathematician knows the density δt(T) of the densest translative tetrahedron packings and the density δc(T) of the densest congruent tetrahedron packings. This paper presents a local method to estimate the density of the densest translative packings of a general convex solid. As an application, we obtain the upper bound in0.3673469⋯≤δt(T)≤0.3840610⋯, where the lower bound was established by Groemer in 1962, which corrected a mistake of Minkowski. For the density δt(C) of the densest translative cuboctahedron packings, we obtain the upper bound in0.9183673⋯≤δt(C)≤0.9601527⋯. In both cases we conjecture the lower bounds to be the correct answer.

Abstract:In 1900, as a part of his 18th problem, Hilbert proposed the question to determine the densest congruent (or translative) packings of a given solid, such as the unit ball or the regular tetrahedron of unit edges. Up to now, our knowledge about this problem is still very limited, excepting the ball case. It is conjectured that, for some particular solids such as tetrahedra, cuboctahedra, and octahedra, their maximal translative packing densities and their maximal lattice packing densities are identical. To attack this conjecture, this article suggests a computer approach to determine the maximal local translative packing density of a given polytope, by studying associated color graphs and applying optimization. In particular, all the tetrahedral case, the cuboctahedral case and the octahedral case of the conjecture have been reduced into finite numbers of manageable optimization problems.

Abstract:The disordered packings of tetrahedra often show no obvious macroscopic orientational or positional order for a wide range of packing densities, and it has been found that the local order in particle clusters is the main order form of tetrahedron packings. Therefore, a cluster analysis is carried out to investigate the local structures and properties of tetrahedron packings in this work. We obtain a cluster distribution of differently sized clusters, and peaks are observed at two special clusters, i.e., dimer and wagon wheel. We then calculate the amounts of dimers and wagon wheels, which are observed to have linear or approximate linear correlations with packing density. Following our previous work, the amount of particles participating in dimers is used as an order metric to evaluate the order degree of the hierarchical packing structure of tetrahedra, and an order map is consequently depicted. Furthermore, a constraint analysis is performed to determine the isostatic or hyperstatic region in the order map. We employ a Monte Carlo algorithm to test jamming and then suggest a new maximally random jammed packing of hard tetrahedra from the order map with a packing density of 0.6337.

Shape Effects on the Random-Packing Density of Tetrahedral Particles

Abstract:Regular tetrahedra have been demonstrated recently giving high packing density in random configurations. However, it is unknown whether the random-packing density of tetrahedral particles with other shapes can reach an even higher value. A numerical investigation on the random packing of regular and irregular tetrahedral particles is carried out. Shape effects of rounded corner, eccentricity, and height on the packing density of tetrahedral particles are studied. Results show that altering the shape of tetrahedral particles by rounding corners and edges, by altering the height of one vertex, or by lateral displacement of one vertex above its opposite face, all individually have the effect of reducing the random-packing density. In general, the random-packing densities of irregular tetrahedral particles are lower than that of regular tetrahedra. The ideal regular tetrahedron should be the shape which has the highest random-packing density in the family of tetrahedra, or even among convex bodies. An empirical formula is proposed to describe the rounded corner effect on the packing density, and well explains the density deviation of tetrahedral particles with different roundness ratios. The particles in the simulations are verified to be randomly packed by studying the pair correlation functions, which are consistent with previous results. The spherotetrahedral particle model with the relaxation algorithm is effectively applied in the simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the first nontrivial lower bound on the translative covering density of tetrahedra. To this end, we show the lower bound, in any translative covering of tetrahedra, on the density relative to a given cube. The resulting lower bound on the translative covering density of tetrahedra is $1+1.227\times10^{-3}$.

Abstract:We apply the ideal octahedron model and the relaxation algorithm in generating octahedron packings. The cubatic order parameter [P4]1, bond-orientational order metric Q6, and local cubatic order parameter P4local of the packings are calculated and their correlations with the packing density are investigated in the order maps. The border curve of packing density separates the geometrically feasible and infeasible regions in the order maps. Observing the transition phenomenon on the border curve, we propose the concept of the maximally dense random packing (MDRP) as the densest packing in the random state in which the particle positions and orientations are randomly distributed and there is no nontrivial spatial correlations among particles. The MDRP characterizes the onset of nontrivial spatial correlations among particles. A special packing with a density about 0.7 is found in the order maps and considered to be the MDRP of octahedra. The P4local is proposed as a new order parameter for octahedron packings, which measures the average order degree in the neighborhoods of particles. The [P4]1, Q6 and P4local evaluate the order degree of orientation, bond orientation and local structures, respectively and are applied simultaneously to measure the order degree of the octahedron packings. Their thresholds in the random state are determined by Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:Since antiquity, the packing of convex shapes has been of great interest to many scientists and mathematicians. Recently, particular interest has been given to packings of three-dimensional tetrahedra. Dense packings of both crystalline and semi-quasicrystalline have been reported. It is interesting that a semiquasicrystalline packing of tetrahedra can emerge naturally within a thermodynamic simulation approach. However, this packing is not perfectly quasicrystalline and the packing density, while dense, is not maximal. Here we suggest that a "golden rotation" between tetrahedral facial junctions can arrange tetrahedra into a perfect quasicrystalline packing.

Abstract:We generate non-lattice packings of spheres in up to 22 dimensions using the geometrical constraint satisfaction algorithm RRR. Our aggregated data suggest that it is easy to double the density of Ball's lower bound, and more tentatively, that the exponential decay rate of the density can be improved relative to Minkowski's longstanding 1/2.

Abstract:The packings of cubes and cuboids (i.e., "elongated" or "compressed" cubes) are ubiquitous in nature. The high symmetry and space-tiling nature of such particles make them easily packable in dense configurations with a high degree of orientational and translational order. In this paper, we devise a novel inverse packing method that enables one to generate dense hard-particle packings with a controllable degree of disorder/order quantified by predefined order metrics via stochastic Monte Carlo optimizations. We employ the inverse packing method to generate and investigate the maximally dense random packings (MDRPs) of hard cubes and cuboids with aspect ratio α, in which a series of newly introduced normalized local cubatic order parameters sensitive to the onset of any spatial order in packings of cubes and cuboids is minimized. The density of the MDRP of cubes is φ ≈ 0.637, which increases as the shape deviates from the cube limit (α = 1) and reaches the maximal values for cuboids with aspect ratios α = 0.7 or 1.5. These special α values associated with local density extrema are almost identical for those associated with the random packings of spherocylinders, spheroids and superellipsoids, suggesting a universal influence of shape elongation on random packing density. Our inverse packing method can be readily utilized to study the MDRPs of other hard particles and the normalized local cubatic order parameter introduced here is applicable to other shaped particles characterized by three principal axes.
Maximally dense packings of two-dimensional convex and concave noncircular particles

Abstract:Dense packings of hard particles have important applications in many fields, including condensed matter physics, discrete geometry and cell biology. In this paper, we employ a stochastic search implementation of the Torquato-Jiao Adaptive-Shrinking-Cell optimization scheme [Nature 460, 876 (2009)] to find maximally dense particle packings in d-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$. While the original implementation was designed to study spheres and convex polyhedra in $d\ge3$, our implementation focuses on $d=2$ and extends the algorithm to include both concave polygons and certain convex or concave non-polygonal particle shapes. We verify the robustness of this packing protocol by successfully reproducing the known putative optimal packings of congruent copies of regular pentagons and octagons, then employ it to suggest dense packing arrangements of congruent copies of certain families of concave crosses, convex and concave curved triangles (incorporating shapes resembling the Mercedes-Benz logo), and "moon-like" shapes. Analytical constructions are determined subsequently to obtain the densest known packings of these particle shapes. For the examples considered, we find that the densest packings of both convex and concave particles with central symmetry are achieved by their corresponding optimal Bravais lattice packings; for particles lacking central symmetry, the densest packings obtained are non-lattice periodic packings, which are consistent with recently-proposed general organizing principles for hard particles. Moreover, we find that the densest known packings of certain curved triangles are periodic with a four-particle basis, and we find that the densest known periodic packings of certain moon-like shapes possess no inherent symmetries. Our work adds to the growing evidence that particle shape can be used as a tuning parameter to achieve a diversity of packing structures.

Abstract:We study the optimal packing of hard spheres in an infinitely long cylinder, using simulated annealing, and compare our results with the analogous problem of packing disks on the unrolled surface of a cylinder. The densest structures are described and tabulated in detail up to D/d=2.873 (ratio of cylinder and sphere diameters). This extends previous computations into the range of structures which include internal spheres that are not in contact with the cylinder.

Density of triangulated ternary disc packings

Abstract:We consider ternary disc packings of the plane, i.e. the packings using discs of three different radii. Packings in which each ''hole'' is bounded by three pairwise tangent discs are called triangulated. There are 164 pairs $(r,s)$, $1{>}r{>}s$, allowing triangulated packings by discs of radii 1, $r$ and $s$. In this paper, we enhance existing methods of dealing with maximal-density packings in order to find ternary triangulated packings which maximize the density among all the packings with the same disc radii. We showed for 16 pairs that the density is maximized by a triangulated ternary packing; for 15 other pairs, we proved the density to be maximized by a triangulated packing using only two sizes of discs; for 40 pairs, we found non-triangulated packings strictly denser than any triangulated one; finally, we classified the remaining cases where our methods are not applicable.

Maximally Dense Random Packings of Spherocylinders

Abstract:A spherocylinder, a convex 3D object consisting of a cylinder with two hemispherical ends, can possess a wide range of aspect ratios and is one of the most studied non-spherical particle shapes. Previous investigations on disordered spherocylinder packings yielded inconsistent packing characteristics, especially the packing density φ, indicating that density alone is not sufficient to uniquely characterize a packing. In this paper, we delineate in the density–order–metric diagram (i.e. order map) the border curve that separates geometrically feasible and infeasible packings of congruent spherocylinders via the geometric-structure approach, i.e., by generating and analyzing a large number of packing configurations with a diversity of densities and degrees of order generated via a relaxation algorithm. We find that the border curve possesses a sharp transition as the packing density increases, i.e., the initial increase of φ is not associated with any notable increase of the degree of order, while beyond a threshold φ value, the increase of density is strongly positively correlated with the increase of order. This allows us to propose the concept of maximally dense random packing (MDRP) state for spherocylinders, which corresponds to the transition point in the boarder curve and characterizes the on-set of nontrivial spatial correlations among the particles. It can also be considered as the maximally dense packing arrangement of spherocylinders without nontrivial spatial correlations. The degree of order of a spherocylinder packing is quantified via the nematic order parameter (S) and the local order metric (SLocal), which respectively characterize the level of global orientational order and local order in particle clusters. The latter metric SLocal, which measures the average order in the neighborhoods of particles with the second Legendre polynomial, is a new order metric for spherocylinder systems. We find that the packing density of the MDRPs initially increases with the increase of the aspect ratio w from 0, and reaches the maximal value of 0.725 when w=0.5, then drops with further increase of w. The MDRP at w=0.5 is verified to be jammed via a Monte Carlo jamming-testing algorithm and thus, should also represent the maximally random jammed (MRJ) packing state as well.
